He grunts and resumes his duties, mumbling something about f$@*ing halflings and how they should all be slaves.

So what's the plan now? You have a general idea of where the rest of the slaves are located but there are too many people here now to really explore much more. The obvious answer is to come back at night and try to sneak in. But you can do anything else or do some prep work/shopping before-hand if you wish.

Sorry it took so long, but there's a map of the Garden of Chains now linked at the top of the page!

The slave holding pends are along the left, the 'stage' can be seen on the right, with the auctioneer's block being the wooden platform in the middle. The dark round thing in the middle is the dried-up fountain with the tunnel leading beneath where the gnoll indicated his best slaves were kept.

If you guys want to go back there at night and try to sneak down the tunnel, I can move us to that point later.

"What can you tell us about why you attacked us..and what awaits us further down this path?. I think it would be in your best interest to talk to us. and what can you tell us about this small metal plate that gnoll was carrying?"

Brachus said to the humans we have captured as he casts a spell (guidance on himself)

Delphine thinks the metal plate might serve as some sort of key.

The human woman growls at Brachus. "There's lots down there so I hope you know where you're going. The prized slaves are down there somewhere, from what I'm told. But plenty else. Fools! You don't know what you're getting into, do you?"

Can I coup-de-grace for non-lethal?

Dalton rolls his eyes at the woman's threats and ramblings. "I think that's quite enough out of you."

The oread then kneels over and cuts a small length of rope to tie around the woman's mouth, effectively gagging her.

He turns to the gnoll, "Sharp teeth - may gnaw through the rope..." He steps over and punches the gnoll repeatedly until the creature is knocked unconscious.

Finally, he picks up the two lengths of silk rope carried by the humans. "Who knows when we may need some more rope, right?"

Would you like me to roll for those hits?

I don't think you can cdg nonlethal but if they're tied up you can just punch them to unconsciousness.

After securing the slavers and knocking them out cold, you are able to descend the shoddy lift system down into the qanat beneath the city: a series of ancient water tunnels that make a rough grid that randomly ends or loops back on itself.

After only a few minutes in the qanat, everyone halts, noticing the obvious pit trap ahead. Everyone except Ennoia, that is, who runs into everyone from behind, unaware of the danger ahead.

Can Shel take 20, for a 34, and try to figure out the mechanism of the trap so that it might be avoided, or at least disabled with a DD roll?

Brachus lends some divine guidance to Shel (casting guidance for a +1 competence bonus) and some virtue (+1 temp hp for the next minute...just in case it doesn't work out as planned)

Shel easily wedges the pit trap shut and the party moves past the obstacle!

The tunnel junction here is here is thirty feet wide, yet a massive pile of filth and trash rests beneath an intersecting well shaft in the ceiling, almost entirely blocking the passage ahead.

The ready source of filth has attracted the attention of a pair of creatures with three legs, three tentacles-two with barbs and one with eyes-and a large gaping toothy mouth.

DC 14 KN (dungeoneering):
Otyughs are particularly vile and horrid creatures that lurk in places most sane creatures avoid. Their lairs are middens, cesspools, offal pits, toxic swamps, and sewers—the greater a lair's filth, the greater the draw to the refuse-eating otyugh. They glory in the role of scavenger, wandering through vast underground caverns in search of the choicest cuts of garbage and waste. Upon finding such refuse, they gorge upon it, gathering what cannot be consumed in one debauch to bring back to their foul-smelling lairs. Otyughs spend most of their time in these filthy dens, which they keep constantly filled with carrion, dung, and worse sorts of stinking effluvia.

Intelligent creatures dwelling in subterranean areas near an otyugh often form a partnership of convenience with the disgusting beast. These creatures gladly provide their refuse and piles of raw meat to the otyugh, transforming the creature into an effective form of trash disposal. In return, the otyugh leaves its benefactors alone, and does not attack them, possibly even acting as a guardian.

The most horrifying thing to most races about the notorious otyugh is not the nature of its diet or its choice of lairs, but rather that a creature with an otyugh's tastes can be anything other than a mindless scavenger. In fact, otyughs are surprisingly intelligent, and often quite eager to form alliances with those who offer them a steady supply of delicious diversions in the form of offal and waste. Most otyughs understand the fact that other creatures find them unpleasant and hideous, but few really care.
