            The man carried a potion of cure light wounds and wore a chain shirt. He also had a masterwork heavy crossbow with 8 +1 bolts remaining and had a shortsword.
Down the staircase you find a perpetual thick gray fog covering the floor of this ancient stone room to a height of six inches. Four alcoves extend from a small circular center. The north and south alcoves are lined with ceremonial slabs on which rest skeletal bodies garbed in old finery, the west alcove contains the spiral staircase you just came down. The east alcove contains only a simple wooden door.
Two more mercenaries stand guard in this room. "Hmph! Just stop right there. Who the hell are you and how the hell did you make it this far?"

            Two things, I would have used up his potion before using Zax's wand. Do you mind a retcon? Also, Brak takes that crossbow and loads it with a magical bolt.
The dwarf looks around with a "who me?" expression.  He awaits a more eloquent party member to speak.  Meanwhile he keeps the crossbow up and eyes the area for more enemies people.  Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
