Rage suddenly fills Valais's eyes and she takes on the movements and posture of a hulking brute, grabbing Deaglan by the shoulders.

"I WILL NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT HEALING. I WILL NOT DIE IN THIS FORSAKEN VESSEL, DWARF, THE VESSEL ONE OF YOUR KIN PUT ME IN."

Valais is already a glass cannon with her HP, and I would really rather not continue without healing her, especially as we have every reason to expect there could be more of these things down below. The immediate threat of the guards being in danger is over, and the situation appears to have stabilized.

It would take a little bit of time to travel back to shore and to the Ascendant Court, which is where the city's most powerful healers would all be, but you certainly can if you desire.

My apologies, I missed Lucija's post.

The axe is well-made, and suited a captain of the guard-- a +2 adamantine battleaxe.

Unfortunately, after extensive thinking about it, nobody can think of anything else relevant to Valais' current condition. It seems like it was connected to the golem, and golems are solidly the province of arcane knowledge. (No, there are no other relevant knowledges you could use.)

Oh, Blue was talking about something else from their backstory. There's a reason dwarves can trigger Valais's PTSD....

Valais lets go of Deaglan as suddenly as she grabbed him. She retracts, clutching her upper arms as though chill had come over her.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Deaglan. Blue doesn't like being stuck with me very much, and dwarves bring back bad memories...."

She sits down next to the side of the boat starts and starts softly rocking back and forth.

"Don't want to know...time to go...don't want to know...time to go...don't want to know...time to go...don't want to know...time to go...."

So, what do we have to do to arrange some healing?

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

The guards nod mournfully at Kris's words regarding their fallen comrade; they set to gathering the badly-damaged bodies of the fallen, lowering them with care to the deck of the sloop. Their air is subdued, and none of them are eager to stay on deck on the site of such carnage. The lieutenant says that they will certainly keep the cordon going, and prevent anyone else from boarding during your absence, but to please make haste...

Valais is coaxed aboard the sloop as well, and a short carriage ride later takes her, and any who go with her, to the Seventh Church, the temple of Iomedae in the Ascendant Court.

Spoilering for length reasons:
The priests and paladins present give Valais's freakish form startled and scared looks, and there's probably more than a few nervous detect evils cast her way. Fortunately nobody smites her. Ultimately, she is ushered into the presence of priests who study her wound. There is much muttered conferring over the injury, most of the intermediate priests saying they've never seen anything like it, and that it's beyond their powers.... she gets shuffled up the chain, from priest to priest.

Finally, a very old, frail-seeming man with white hair, assisted by two acolytes helping him walk, comes into the room where Valais is waiting and peers at her with eyes that still seem shrewd despite his years.

"Ah, what a hard road for you," he murmurs, and comes to inspect the injury. "Let's just see here, shall we..."

The old priest sits in concentration, eyes closed, a withered hand resting on Valais's injury. Even if Valais's other... roommates hiss and snarl at his close proximity, or spit obscenities, he is unmoved and unbothered. Lines of concentration appear on the old man's deeply wrinkled face, and his hand trembles as with palsy.... but after a few minutes, Valais feels the damaged flesh partially knitting back together. The white crystals appear to be gone when she looks down.

Successful CLW: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

(Cost: 3 attempted castings of CLW, from caster level 15, at 10 a pop = 450 GP. You only get the 10 HP back, but the taint that prevented you from healing is now gone and your own healing can heal you the rest of the way.)

"There," the old man sighs, sagging against one of the young acolytes. "That was... a test of faith. Forgive me, the spirit is willing but the flesh... is weak. Go your way in peace, child... whatever peace your curse will let you find..."

Valais is able to return to the ship!

If some of you wanted to stay and post a watch, that's fine: nothing happens during the time Valais (and anyone who goes with her) is gone. I'm railroading a bit to say none of you approach the sealed door during that time, just to make all of our lives simpler. But: you're all back together again, and healing now works normally on Valais. Move on when you're ready; and remember to move your tokens for me if you go down into the below-deck area, as Deaglan did. If I missed anything anyone did, poke me.

(Ah yes, thanks for the reminder-- I will say Deaglan is definitely no longer enlarged. Any minute-per-level or less buffs you threw up would be gone in the time it takes Valais to get healed. Mage armor is fine, and if there were an 10/minutes a level buffs, those can be still active as well (I don't remember seeing any, but just in case I missed one).)

Feeling more at home on the deck of the ship, Kris will help the guards with their fallen comrades, careful not to be touched by the living sailors. He treats the fallen with utmost care and attention. Any sailors with wounds he will heal with his hex, not taking no for an answer as it is not a finite resource.

Between Deaglan's channel and Kris's hex, the guards are all healed as they work to clear the deck of the fallen. They murmur quiet thanks to Kris for his help. Valais waits at the entrance deeper into the boat, turning back towards the others.

"Come on, everyone! It's time to Explore! Report! Cooperate!" Such a rallying cry--combined with her earnest, childish tone--certainly has a sickeningly saccharine taste, but it takes on another more melancholic aspect coming from the poor girl.

When the others have gathered down below, or--alternatively--she has been told to do so, she will try to do what she used to do much better back before her so-called "accident"--find traps on doors.

When Valais and Deaglan come near to the door-- ten feet away from it, in fact-- the opaque white crystal abruptly ripples, like a pond with a pebble tossed in. It stays that way-- still opaque, still seemingly made of white crystal-- but the crystal shivers with antici...

...pation.

If Valais or Deaglan move more than ten feet from it, it abruptly stops, becoming quiescent white stone once more.

Valais detects no traps on it. A cursory check for magic reveals multiple powerful auras entwined with the door's structure, though they are only visible when it is in its 'active' state.

Knowledge Arcana, DC 20:
There are numerous schools of magic and strong auras active here: you detect divination, enchantment, illusion, necromancy, and transmutation effects in play.

Knowledge Arcana or Spellcraft, DC 28:
You do not know all of the spells in effect here, as some of them are things you have simply never even read about before, but you can make educated guesses as some of the magical signatures have at least some similarities to things like command undead, binding, detect alignment, passwall, magic aura, and others. In particular, there are numerous divination spells attached to this portal.

The wall of white crystal trembles slightly, as if waiting for something, anything, to break the tension of its surface.

The blazing beetle trundles towards the indicated door, leaving tiny sooty marks on the white crystal as it walks. It bumps into the door, and... stops, for it can't go any further. You notice that the section of portal against which the beetle is abutted (abeetled?) seems to have returned to its 'solid' state, and isn't rippling. The beetle seems insufficiently.... whatever-it-is that all those divinatory magics are looking for.

The beetle's smoldering antennae twitch back towards Lucija, in what is probably the beetle equivalent of a shrug.

Naghamadi barely hesitates before floating toward the door himself.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

GM Shtuff:
?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 Naghamadi: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Agile as a fish in the air, the looping, otherworldly serpent slithers towards the door.... and through. The white crystal ripples with Naghamadi's entrance, like a pool of mercury, and Naghamadi sails through unimpeded.

What Naghamadi sees/experiences:
(Here is a Naghamadi-specific map.)

There's a sensation like passing through a sticky, grasping net, but Naghamadi is an agile creature and twists through without any problem.

Naghamadi finds himself in a chamber made of the same white crystal. More geometric and angular surfaces provide the aesthetic. Though Naghamadi can see in the dark, he does need to, for the hull itself still provides enough dim, diffused daylight through its white walls that vision is not impeded. The chamber he is in has a counter running the length of both walls, of a height that would serve a human or similarly sized creature; one of the counters has a grill of some silvery metal inlaid in it, and a ventilation shaft above this grill. The walls of this chamber are covered with numerous small square and rectangular doors, all shut, none bigger than a foot or two wide.

Ahead of Naghamadi, the chamber narrows further, to about ten feet wide, before expanding into another large open space. Any details of that chamber are probably of secondary interest to the protean, subsumed under the fact that there's... plants growing there? Sort of? It appears that... 'plant life', in a loose sense, has overrun the further chamber, tendrils of it reaching down the ship's length almost to Naghamadi. If they really are plants they are very strange ones: a colorless grey hue, and as Naghamadi observes, the tendrils and creepers that drape over the farther chamber seem to slowly become more solid... and then less, until they are near wisps of smoke, translucent as a mirage... and then more again.

The leaves and clumps of vegetation pulse out of time with one another, drifting in and out of being, it would seem, at random. For one as inherently chaotic in his nature as Naghamadi is, the view is likely not as incredibly surreal and troubling as it would be to a limited mortal. Even as Naghamadi observes, a vine as thick as his own serpentine self phases into visibility ten feet away, appearing to intersect seamlessly with the crystal floor below-- shooting up the whole height of the passage-- and then fading into the ceiling above.

...It's weird as f*&&, essentially.

(Unfortunately, I can't nest spoilers, but this spoiler check can only be attempted by Naghamadi right now:)

Knowledge nature or planes, DC 28:
This.... yeah, this isn't supposed to be on this plane. These are outgrowths and extremities of something called a xenophage creeper, and it is normally only found on the Ethereal Plane. It is a semi-sentient plant, which is nice, neat phrase akin to describing the Eye of Abednego as a weather incident. Xenophage creepers are carnivorous (though they feed off of vital energy as well as mere mundane nutrients) and have various unusual planar abilities, such as the ability to sedate those they have consumed and store them indefinitely for later absorption. Creepers also have other strange, quasi-psychic abilities, which activate more on an instinctive level than as conscious processes.

To be sprouting the number of tendrils and growths you can see infesting these two cabin areas, the source xenophage creeper must be enormous.

We're going to go into rounds right now. We're not in strict initiative so I won't roll that, but timing will matter, so: ROUND 1-- Naghamadi just passed through the portal. What, if any, actions are you taking, with the caveat that it must be something complete-able in one round? (I mean, you can start a longer action, just don't narrate the finishing-out of it.) Everyone is 'up', including Naghamadi.

Kris watches the beetle unable to pass, then as the eidolon goes through he gives the party a shrug and saunters towards the doorway. "Well Nag has just made it, I might as well be the first living guinea pig and all that". Uncaring of danger the half elf draws his cutlas and makes to step through the portal.

Please note what I said above about that Knowledge check being ONLY for Naghamadi to attempt right now. I'll keep that roll, though, when/if you would be able to attempt it.

GM stuff:

Kai... steps through as well. He disappears from everyone else's sight.

Kai:
Kai, you may read the spoiler to Naghamadi above, and you may look at the linked map. Your roll was too low for the knowledge check, however. Getting past the resistance you felt on passing through qualified as a standard action for you, so your turn is done.

(Anybody who is through the portal, please spoiler-tag your further actions/dialogue/etc for me.)

With only a bit more effort than it takes one to cross one's eyes, Lucija eagerly opens her senses to Naghamadi's.

Bond Senses as a standard action! How often does that come up? :)

opening the door to the Twilight Zone...:

Naghamadi's Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Lucija's Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Lucija's Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

The 6:01 mark here would be our ambient music right about now, I presume?

"Ecstatic puzzlement" is the term that best describes Lucija and Naghamadi's reaction to what they see. Naghamadi tries to go back to the other side of the door in the highly limb-reaching hope that somebody else can recognize what he and Lucija cannot.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

(I was idly wondering if you weren't going to Bond Senses before sending him in. :P)

Lucija & Naghamadi:
Naghamadi twists about and finds that from this side, the crystal door is wholly solid, with no rippling. Pushing against it has the same effect as pushing against a wall normally would. Seems very solid, ayup.

Kris is here as well, having come through scant seconds after Naghamadi.

Kris:
From your position inside the room, you can see Lucija's weird-ass snake-thing turn around and try and go back the way you came-- but the protean fetches up against the crystal door, which from this side, seems quite unyielding solid... and cannot pass.

Valais, Deaglan, Darro, and Kleetus, actions?

Kai looks uneasily at the protean and the weird landscape they find themselves in and cautiously takes a step back. Seeing him unable to pass through the door he decides to cast a cantrip to see if anything shows up. Detect Magic, down the corridorKris also decides to test the place, first to see if speech is distorted in any way.

"So mate, you alright? You're looking a little off."

Important question, Darro: is your wolf going first, or you? Or are you attempting to enter simultaneously (squeezing)?

Kai, your turn, as I stated, was in entering through the portal. You are not up in my list of people who have yet to act on this turn. You cannot cast detect magic right now.

Kleetus, I'm going to wait for Darro to clarify his entrance method/order before I address yours, but just clarifying: you are 'readying' for after Deaglan's protective spell goes up on you?

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

GM stuff:

?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 Darro: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Darro starts to try and walk through the rippling doorway, but he encounters resistance. It feels like trying to walk through a wall of mud that is simply too thick, sticky, and binding for him to be able to twist his way through, even though he's a very agile person. After struggling several seconds trying to push through, the wall solidifies, and Darro is pushed backwards into the room without managing to breach the portal.

Blackthorn whines a little, staying at Darro's thigh-- the order is to come to his master, and he's done so.

Deaglan calls on the divine protection of Trudd. (I assume, since you did not specify otherwise, that you are using yourself as the emanation point for the spell. I am also giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming that you will explain to your colleagues the limitations of the spell; i.e., that if they go further than ten feet away from you, they will terminate the protection from evil effect. I also took the liberty of moving Deaglan's token right next to the doorway, because otherwise PCs would essentially move into the next room, be further away than 10' from Deaglan, and would stop receiving the spell's protection immediately, thus causing you to have wasted your spell.)

Currently affected by protection from evil: Deaglan, Lucija, Darro, Blackthorn, Valais, and Kleetus. (The spell will not reach through the doorway to touch those already through, though I will allow its protection to extend to someone who has it on them right now, passes through, but does not move more than 10' away from you.)

After noticing Darro's failure to get through, Kleetus attempts to move through the portal...

GM stuff:
?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 Kleetus: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Kleetus also strides through, disappearing from sight.

GM stuff:
?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 Valais: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

...followed a few seconds later by Valais.

Valais and Kleetus:
Both of you feel a powerful force pushing against you as you enter, like a thick, oozing, semi-solid mud. However, you are also both quite physically powerful in your own right, and manage to tuck your chins down and bull directly through it. (You may read the initial spoilered description of the chamber beyond the door, here, as well as view the map here. You may also attempt the Kn Planes/Nature check from that post if you desire.)

(Round 1 recap:)
Kai successfully passed through the portal
Lucija bonded her senses to Naghamadi's
Deaglan cast magic circle from evil
Darro failed to pass through the portal
Kleetus passed through the portal
Valais passed through the portal
Naghamadi flew a little further in (as judged by your moved token on the map)

More post coming, just tossing that up real quick
