Watts focuses on the building as he thinks on the question. "Relying on my abilities alone I would be wary asking questions. I have had ample success seeking out answers, but I am far less confident of performing such tasks covertly."
Thinking on the prospects causes Watts to perk up as he refocuses his mind on the new question.
"If you are willing and able though, I would be excited to serve as aid and translator. It has been some time since I have been able to properly practice my Tien with a native speaker and even then I only sampled a small selection of dialects, not to even discuss the other languages of the continent."
"Speaking of the other languages of the continent, it is a quite interesting comparison to my typical studies of human languages since Taldane has been, by and large, affected and affected by other languages of the Inner Sea, but those influences are minimal here in the languages of Tian-Xia. The situation presented is a number of different cultures that ..." If unchecked, Watts continues on the subject of linguistic influences cultures have on one another as well as some base differences Watts understands between the regions in discussion.
...
"I have my own preparations as well before we enter. I hope they are not necessary, but I have been attacked far more often serving Pathfinder interests than aiding in library research." Watts drinks a couple tinctures and draws a third into his beak for a moment before spitting it out again into the same vial. His eyes carry an unearthly glow after the series of treatments and he takes a moment to reappraise his surroundings. "I have been relying on this for years and it is still mystifying to realize how much I miss using the bare senses."
Before going in the shop, whenever it may happen, drinking ablative barrier, alchemical allocation, and then an elixir of vision to increase Perception by +10.

Cirri uses her wand of Mage Armor on Riddywhipple and she drinks the vial of antitoxin, just in case.
Cirri keeps detect magic on and keeps her staff at the ready. "Hopefully we're just overly cautious and nothing bad will happen here."
Riddywhipple laughs. "Or maybe she's a ghost and will haunt our dreams, eh?" He gets a wide grin as Cirri shudders at the thought of more undead.

![]() |

Chak purchases an antitoxin, but doesn't use it yet I will use my scroll of delay poison and let others benefit from the communal one.
He makes sure a shield spell is stored in his ioun stone and a frigid touch in his breastplate.
"Tien has always served me well. I grew up in Goka where there are too many, exorbitantly numerous and astoundingly copious dialects. I simply focused on the common tongue and developed wit, sense, and savvy to discern when I was being swindled. I did later learn, acquire and master the language of Minata, but that was not until after I left Goka."

![]() |

“I hear you, Cirri.”
Eadie also chugs an antitoxin, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand when she’s done. “I’ve had too many Venture-Captains say things like: ‘I’m sure you won’t need cold iron. The reports of demons guarding that *glowy* portal in the middle of the Worldwound are probably exaggerated’ to take such things at face value.”
Watts continues on the subject of linguistic influences cultures have on one another as well as some base differences Watts understands between the regions in discussion.
Eadie’s eyes begin to glaze over. “What you need is a girlfriend, Master Watts.”
“Perhaps the General – or his moustache could fix you up?”

![]() |

"I ... um. Yes, I have been told this before. I suppose a companion with an alternative perspective could aid with research..."
"I certainly would welcome your advice General. Presuming the Society allows I would love to stay within Goka to experience the full force of the dialects you speak of."

Though adequately illuminated, this bookshop feels gloomy and somewhat claustrophobic. There are many tables holding piles of books and several bookshelves that stretch from floor to ceiling. The entire east wall is a single bookcase, completely filled with books.
From within the shop a female voice greets you. "Welcome to my shop? What can I help you with?"
Ahead, sitting in one of the desks is a human who is keeping an eye on the lot of you.

![]() |

What language is that person speaking?

![]() |

"Wow..." Cirri scans all of the bookshelves. "I bet I could spend a decade or two in here..." Cirri is lost and clearly wants to read as many books as she can.

![]() |

Watts takes in the stacks of books as he admires the binding and examine the titles, barely restraining himself from perusing the books immediately. "I would wish you luck on that endeavour. I have been unable to convince a proprietor to let me stay even one night among the shelves."

![]() |

“Cirriously, Cirri?”
Eadie boldly removes a copy of The Great Catsby by F. Scat Fitzgerald from the shelf.
She flips it open lovingly so as not to damage the spine, and begins scanning the pages. “They don’t seem to have any pictures.”

![]() |

Vim takes a beeline to the human behind the desk.

![]() |

"Find the right book and the author will draw you a clearer picture than any illustration could."
Watts focus turns away from the vast amount of books to nod in agreement with Vim and gives a cursory examination to the shopkeeper before moving on.

![]() |

Eadie closes an eye. "Do you have to pay extra for that?"
“What if he’s on break when you go to buy the book?”
In the interests of not getting surprised, she then takes a careful look around for threats.
Take 10 Perception: 10 + 15 = 25

"Well cost can vary between different regions but when you go ... to purchase ... he's on break? What?"
Watts speaking slows as he mind divides attention between the books, Eadie's question, and following her lead watching for potential threats.

Since no one else is asking, Cirri decides to pop up to the front desk. "Ah, yes. We're looking for the Abysium Codex... we heard you may have it in possession?"
When all else fails, tell the truth!

![]() |

“Yeah, like say Creighton Shaine sends you out to buy a book about fire-fighting ‘cos he’s set his lab on fire (again). He needs that book like now, right?”
Eadie explains her reasoning slowly and carefully. “But say the book's author is in the Coins District getting his nibs sharpened, or enjoying a quiet ale at the Winking Cyclops.”
"How is he going to return to the shoppe in time to draw that picture for you, so that the Big Bosses don't have to shell out for another magic lab?”

![]() |

The lady behind the counter responds in Tian. "You are speaking to her."
Watts peers around and notices 2 particularly dangerous threats. The first of which is the several century old assassin sitting behind the counter speaking to Vim and Cirri, and the second is her armed guard at the other table, keeping a watchful eye on you. Despite appearing cordial, Shadow Orchid is eyeing up Vim, and not in the flattering manner.
She switches back to common to respond to Cirri.
"Yes... I do have the tome you are looking for, and as I have mentioned many times, to several different parties, it is not for sale. Whom do you represent?"

![]() |

"Oh! Cool. Um, we're with the Pathfinder Society. We heard money wasn't what you were after, so um... what could we do to get that?"
"Please don't say violence please don't say violence uh oh I'm thinking out loud again. Zip it!" Cirri finally cuts herself off.

![]() |

Chak takes a moment to wipe a spot of drool from his beak.
Madam, I am Chak, a collector of tomes, books, and volumes ancient and esoteric. I simply must acquire, procure, and obtain such a work for my collection. Surely we would not be a waste of your time to discuss, consider, and talk about a mutually beneficial arrangement. Perhaps we can even discuss several other works was well.
Orator to conceal the fact that he's not really answering her question?
Linguistics: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40
Looks like Cirri posted while I was writing my post, so trying to conceal our affiliation with the Pathfinder Society no longer makes any sense. Can that be used to influence her attitude instead?

![]() |

She rises from her seat and shakes her head slowly.
"Thank you sir Cirri for not doing me the discourtesy of a poor attempt at deceit. I may be old and feeble now, but my ears are quite keen. Please inform Amara Li once again that the book is a part of my personal collection and is not available for purchase, nor perusal. If there are any other works of literature I can interest you in, I will help you, however if that is all you seek I must ask you to leave."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
*sigh* “Seems there was nothing we could have said or done, Pathfinders. This isn’t anyone’s fault or failure.”
Eadie draws her enchanted falchion. “Please produce the book for our perusal and the author to paint us a picture - and you can still get out of this uninjured.”

![]() |

"Oh my, such threats... very well. Please Chemshek? Would you bring down the Codex for these-"
A tengu appears from the staircase, and as he does she cuts off mid sentence and leaps from beside the desk at Vim's throat with supernatural speed.

Sheesh, I missed all of the interesting stuff. Could you sound off If you partook of the Delay Poison (Communal) I purchased? Just to figure out duration.
Aldebert had opened his mouth to reply, but Cirri's mild-mannered method intrigued the crossbowman. And since he had been told by some that his manner was brash and rude, he shut his mouth, allowing for the non-Taldane method to be applied. With clearly predictable results.
Drawing his crossbow, he cackles in a manner befitting a rooster. Or a turkey. "You foolish Tian wench! Prepare to be chastised! FOR TALDOR! BWAHA-HA!"

Eadie gives Shadow Orchid an 'I told you so' look. "Now, are you sure you don't want to give us the book?"
If the first slash dropped Red, I'd like to take a move action please, GM.
I'll take some of that communal delay poison action please, Aldebert.

Watts watches the bodyguard rise along with Shadow Orchid, but his mind is so fixed on other minutia he pauses watching a flurry of attacks already with only one thing ringing true through his mind. He struggles to communicate it though as he kneads the air to try to manifest the words flowing throw his mind.
"But, no... The painting is a metaphor."
I will gladly take some of the communal delay poison.

![]() |

“Yeah I know that, Watts. (Duh) If the book’s about metaphors, of course he’s gonna like paint a picture of one.”
Eadie eyes the enemy tengu warily. “But if the book’s about fires, like I specially mentioned in my exquisite example, he’s not gonna paint a metaphor now, is he?”

Cirri slaps her forehead. "I always forget about the ward!"

Chak: I moved you a bit since you could see an open window on the side of the building as you walked out. Feel free to change your movement a bit with that in mind, but I just went ahead and revealed the second floor. Green mook is visible, preparing to exit the window. You can even take the shot if you want from there (1 move action away), although they would have cover. I'll continue to move on in initiative, but if you want to take the shot. Ceiling is 20 ft high, so I'll guess you'd prefer to ready an action to shoot him as he descends so you can get your sneak attack.

One of them is caught off guard by Chak's strike, however the learned slayer's aim is off and embeds the arrow into the windowsill instead. She beckons to her guards, which move to protect her. The first runs around the side of the building, then takes a position at the front door Double Move, moves under Riddywhipple.
The second moves around Chak to flank with his master Provokes an AoO.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 = 14 Miss
The final thug continues to try fighting in the fog.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 Miss
