Last time i checked, 1 diagonal and the rest adjacent, 10 squares.
GM Chyro
It was my understanding every consecutive diagonal square after the 1st counted as 10.

GM, I think diagonals were 1st 5feet, 2nd 10feet, 3rd 5feet, 4th 10 feet and so on.
Shiba, and everybody. Don't worry about me, sometimes dice gods conspire to cause deaths. And I'm playing with Chyro, so I know he can roll really high.
My ghost will be around here to see if how well you're doing and he doesn't mind if you use Guinfa's belongings. Just remember to leave his body in the astereroid, so he can continue exploring the universe after his death.

We have 78/150 clues!
Can we put in a formal request not to have this displayed, or at least hidden under a spoiler. It sort of ruins the feel of specials and surprise at the end for me every time we get told OOC how well or poorly we are doing, and I really don't think that there is any way that anyone would know how many clues there are, much less how everyone is doing.
GM, I think diagonals were 1st 5feet, 2nd 10feet, 3rd 5feet, 4th 10 feet and so on.
That is correct, every second diagonal takes up 2 squares worth of movement, (or 10ft of movement). This is compounded by difficult terrain, (adding an extra square or 5ft of movement). It also doesn't have to be consecutive diagonal movement. So, if you where to move diagonal (+5), down (+5), diagonal (+10), down (+5), and then diagonal (+5) and diagonal (+10), that would take up a total of 40ft of movement.
If you where to move diagonal (+5), down (+5), and then diagonal (+10), that would take up 20ft feet of movement.
If you where to move on difficult terrain diagonal (+10), down (+10), and then diagonal (+15), that would take up 35ft feet of movement, and if you only have 30ft and a single Move Action, you can not make that last diagonal movement.
Measuring Distance
As a general rule, distance is measured assuming that 1 square equals 5 feet.Diagonals: When measuring distance, the first diagonal counts as 1 square, the second counts as 2 squares, the third counts as 1, the fourth as 2, and so on.
You can't move diagonally past a corner (even by taking a 5-foot step). You can move diagonally past a creature, even an opponent.
You can also move diagonally past other impassable obstacles, such as pits.
The idea is that moving from one line to the other of a 5ft square is slightly shorter than it is for moving from one corner to the other of a 5ft square, but it rounds up so that the second diagonal is the one that assumes the extra distance.
GM Chyro
Ok, good to know.
If that is the case, i've been walking incorrectly with my own PCs for quite some time.
----------------
I kind of agree with your sentiment, yet there is something in favor of it.
Remember the Sky Key doomsday event?
We were only aware we didn't have the required successes, so the table i played at were botting/playing & rocking successes so we wouldn't die.
On the other hand, i think it might be meant as some sort of motivator

No worries. I really don't see why each square just doesn't equal 5ft no matter what direction you move for simplicity, but that's neither here nor there.

Hey Archon,
When Cosmic Captive is done live, there is supposed to be an overhead projector that projects the ongoing clue count on the wall, though the scenario also suggests that the overseer can do a thermometer-like poster display.
The clue count included in my overseer posts is an adaption to the medium. I can, however, edit the next one for a spoiler if that is preferred!

I would, thank you. I really don't like the idea of knowing how well or poorly we are doing in such a manner, though I think it might work better in an IC post if Sorrina Westyr where to say something like "It looks like we are half way there", or something along those lines.
I just feel that giving specific numbers, both where everyone is at and also what the goal is overall to be too metagamy.
GM Hmm
Okay then! I'll adapt my next post to include a spoiler!
Hmm
PS Are you amused that I am reading everyone's discussion comments? But it's the best way to track tables that might be having issues... Hope all of you are still having a good time!

You positive? Ganzi Boons are even harder to get than my Dhampir Boons - if we can find some way to bring you back, or trade in our as-yet-unfulfilled wish for treasure in for a wish to bring you back, I'd be all for it.

You have been granted your items. You just haven't used them yet.
Edit: The budget was 15k, but you wanted 17k worth. So if you ditch for example the RoP +1, you are right on budget.

Thunderous aid should be of relevance to every fight. It gives the players a chance to cast SLAs that could be relevant -- summoning elementals to aid them, or healing to stabilize a dying comrade. The new condition is very relevant as well as it brings critical healing.
GM Chyro
Sorry guys, i am honestly confused by this.
The PDF described Thunderous Aid in a certain way, but anyway, let's get going towards our next destination....where you will be able to use your newly granted powers.
And, since the special will be ending soon, boon rolls.
19-20 nets you a boon.
I am unaware of what it will be, as of yet)

Shiba: 1d20 ⇒ 19

Thunderous Aid
With about half of the prison facets solved so far, ever more wind and power is leaking from the prison. The being within must have sensed that its saviors are near and attempts to grant them power and wisdom, if they can channel this power to good effect.
During combat, a PC adjacent to the puzzle orb can attempt an Average Diplomacy check, Average Spellcraft check, or Easy Use Magic Device check to direct the being’s wrath. If successful, a PC can cast one of the following spells as a spell-like ability, using her character level as her caster level and either her own Charisma or 20 to determine the spell’s save DC. She can use any of the spells listed in her own subtier or in a lower subtier. This ability can only be used once per combat, and any summoned elemental disappears at the end of the combat.
- Subtier 1–2: cure light wounds, shocking grasp, summon nature’s ally II (air elemental only)
- Subtier 3–4: cat’s grace, cure moderate wounds

We aren't anywhere near the puzzle orb, though. :/

Out of curiosity, is anyone running any games on gameday 6?
I have a lvl 2 and a lvl 3 available.
GM Bret is looking for players for Masks of the Living God, which seems to be in your level range. I told them you might be interested.
HERE is the link.
Hello all!
This will be my first attempt at GMing a PBP.
I've GMed a fair amount of Face-to-Face games for PFS and played in a few different PBP games.
This will be part of Play by Post Gameday VI. I intend to start the game September 2nd, 2017 although I will most likely open up gameplay a few days before that so that the characters can introduce themselves to each other.
I will be running Masks of the Living God, a 32-page module for 2nd to 4th level characters.
Masks of the Living God wrote:An adventure for 3rd-level Pathfinder Roleplaying Game characters.
GM Chyro
Thank you. :)
I'll be sure to take a look.
And Quan, go ahead with the items.

I would like to save the Ganzi boon if posible, yes. But having been killed by a death effect it will mean having 32 PP or a huge amount of money. So seeing it's not posible, I prefer having Guinfa's body travelling through the universe. Until a Starfinder team found his body
GM Hmm
Thanks!
Hmm
GM Chyro
I didn't put a pit in this fight.
That travel part was the pit.
GM Hmm
Hey Gang,
I got called in my capacity as VL to look over Guinfa's death, so here I am. I did a review of the circumstances, and realized that the random roll to determine player locations in hitching a ride put the players at more of a disadvantage than the scenario likely intended. I can understand it... It added a bit of fun verisimultude, but it also took away player agency and undermined their tactics at a critical time.
As such, after reviewing the following fight, I am reversing the death of Guinfa. To prevent you guys from having to retcon the entire combats that followed, let's say that he was knocked out, assumed dead, and then revived by the Winds of Restoration. He has now come to, and found his way to all of you, guided by Ranginori's light.
Welcome back to the fight, Guinfa.

What, the one where you throw Guinfa off the asteroid and into the void?
"Good voyages, dear companion...."
"Hey guys wait I-GAAAAAAAAAAAAAACKKKKKKK...!"

Out of curiosity...
I'm getting the feeling the word -quaff- is an American word for drinking?
To me it sounded odd, having been used to 'drinking, downing, gulping'.
I'm on the other side of the ocean after all.
Xukong
|
Not 'American,' but archaic English; definitely the kind of word one seldom hears anymore outside of fantasy games (and I assure you most Americans have never heard it).
Ever played Rogue? You consume potions with the 'Q' key because it stands for 'quaff.'
GM Chyro
Ok, if it is that rare and games related, then it explains a lot.
And no, i haven't played Rogue.
Xukong
|
It's one of the most significant games in computer game history, might want to give it a try sometime, if only to say you have! :)
Have you heard the term "Roguelike" to describe games like Diablo? That's where that comes from.
GM Chyro
I only said i haven't played it.... ;)
But i've played all Diablo games, and the term (and meaning of) -Roguelike- itself isn't new to me, as it has come up several times when i was searching for RPG titles to try out.

I wasn't thinking this could happen, but I'm grateful for it. And Xukong, I didn't wish to be thrown away of the asteroid, but being in it. Guinfa joined the society without caring for his past or matter about seeing again the people he left behind, all for his desire of explore and see wonders. Being thrown to the dark space is boring.

And Xukong, I didn't wish to be thrown away of the asteroid, but being in it.

--------------------
Well, with victory achieved, i've got to say this was one eventful game.
Sorry for the crits... :P
I will share that this was my 1st time running a special, and so i've gotten some off-screen feedback already.
However, if some of you have a few constructive tips to smooth things out for future specials, i am happy to hear them.
I have a feeling Beckett has one, regarding spoilered Kn. rolls.
In my own games i often spoiler it.
Yet with some other games i see or play in, the spoiler results get posted when rolled for it.
I wondered if knowledge would be rolled for regardless. Turns out it doesn't always come naturally unless the GM hangs out the bait. ^^
That said, i hope this special was enjoyable, despite everything.
And, if the overseer is reading, thank you for being the busy bee for this special. :)

Honestly, I thought you did just fine. I liked that it felt very deadly. Specials are a bit problematic in general, and are generally known for being tougher.
One thing I did notice about this one that I thought was good, in comparison to all the others I've taken part of is that I really liked that they tried to offer different types of creature types throughout, some humanoids, some undead, some outsiders, and some aberrations.
As for the Spoilers for Know Roles, like you said, I've seen it different ways, and I am not trying to say that you did it bad or wrong. There are not a lot of "rules" about how it should be run.
I personally like them being offered as spoilers, but that's just me.
All in all, I'd say superb job, and thank you for running. I have been particularly interested in the return of the Good Elemental Lords, and I began to suspect that they might be showing up here, so I am pleased that I was partially right, and I really, really hope that this leads to the possibility of making a Cleric or Paladin of them soon.
As far as constructive tips, I just want to reiterate I was only trying to offer helpful tips of things I've discovered the hard way while running, but I do not mean them to suggest or imply that my way is the best. Everyone has their own system for running games, and if it works for you, go with that.
I would really just say that I felt a lot of the time that a little more description of things might have helped a lot throughout, but again I have experience with running Specials, and I know that they try to cram in so much that details are sometimes simply left out, (making it difficult for the DM to "add" things that are not really that clear and border on not running it as written).
I honestly was not sure if I would make it through this one, and I view that as a good thing!!! I even had to warn another DM I am signed up for that this character might not survive.

Thanks GM Chyro for running the adventure. This is the first pbp/PFS module where I saw players die, so that in it's own is something.

@group - sorry all if my spell load out wasn't the best for this.
Don't be sorry; there is no 'man for all seasons' in this game.

Thanks for running! And for only killing me once! (Kidding, if that doesn't come across in text.
Specials are crazy hectic, and I think you did pretty damn well with players (read: me) who probably could have done a better job being on point. Kudos is in order.
Personal taste: I agree with Beckett. Reactionary rolls slow the momentum. Spoilers might be inelegant, but they keep perception/knowledge from taking two extra non-action posts.
@Velinov: No worries! Sometimes the enemies are good against you. These ones happened to be really good at crushing my skull, for instance.
GM Chyro
Thank you for the kind words.
Shiba, i will need your email, not only for the chronicle, but to relay it for the boon you got as well. :)

I completely agree.
Talking about other things, I enjoyed this special a lot even considering deaths and all. It has a good mix of combat, diplomacy, skills, etc. Drowing in easy water seems a fair thing for dumping strength
@Velinov, Shiba and whoever things he doesn't do enough. that wasn't my impression at all. There was times where the ilusions where great to having Shiba fighting at our side make the casters, being more protected. I enjoyed playing with all of you. And with you too GMChyro, after all I'm playing with you game after game

Tier 3-4 money: 1,2503
Elemental Conquest: You have fought and fraternized with the guardians of Aucturn’s Tear, and although you triumphed, it is clear that this is not the last time you’ll clash with elemental forces. Choose one of the benefits below, and cross the other two off your Chronicle sheet. You may select an option only so long as you successfully completed at least one encounter in a region with that elemental affinity during this adventure. ▫ Earth: You gain a +1 insight bonus on saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and effects of creatures with the earth subtype and against spells with the acid or earth descriptors. While adventuring on the Plane of Earth, you instead gain a +1 insight bonus on all saving throws. As a swift action, you can check the box that precedes this boon in order to gain DR 5/adamantine for 1 minute; once the boon has prevented an amount of damage equal to 5 times your character level, the effect ends. ▫ Fire: You gain a +1 insight bonus on saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and effects of creatures with the fire subtype and against spells with the fire descriptor. While adventuring on the Plane of Fire, you instead gain a +1 insight bonus on all saving throws. As a swift action, you can check the box that precedes this boon in order to grant one weapon you wield the flaming weapon special ability for 1 minute; if the weapon already has the flaming special ability, it instead gains flaming burst for 1 minute. ▫ Water: You gain a +1 insight bonus on saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities, and effects of creatures with the water subtype and against spells with the cold or water descriptors. While adventuring on the Plane of Water, you instead gain a +1 insight bonus on all saving throws. As a swift action, you can check the box that precedes this boon in order to gain a +5 competence bonus on Swim checks and the ability to breath underwater for 1 minute. ▫▫ Ranginori’s Debt: You helped recover the Untouchable Opal, within which Ranginori, Elemental Lord of Air, is trapped. While imprisoned, his power is limited. Nonetheless, he has granted you an initial gift with the promise of greater rewards should the Society free him. You can activate this boon as a standard action by checking one of the boxes that precedes it, gaining one of the benefits based on your level when you activate the boon. For any spell-like ability, use your character level as your caster level. Any Level: You can recall a spell slot or prepared spell you already cast that day. The spell is prepared again or the spell slot is available for use again, as if it had not been used already. Levels 1–4: You cast cat’s grace, cure moderate wounds, lesser restoration, or shocking grasp as a spell-like ability. Levels 5–8: Add cure serious wounds, fly, and lightning bolt to the list of spell-like abilities you can use. Level 9–11: Add call lightning storm and cure critical wounds to the list of spell-like abilities you can use. Level 12+: Add heal and whirlwind to the list of spell-like abilities you can use, though both of these spell-like abilities requires you to check both boxes.
It might probably be tomorrow, regarding chronicles. Tech problem. :(
