It's a mechanic in other games, where if you roll a critical threat, and then roll a critical threat on the confirmation roll, you can roll another confirmation to try and get more damage. Every time you roll a critical threat, the dice continue to "explode," which means you could, in theory, just absolutely annihilate a target with a single hit.
Javell DeLeon |
So basically if you crit, and you confirm, you get to confirm a third time and that's where it stops? Just as Nelosse did?
And the damage is what? If it's x4 what do you roll on this exploding crit? The same roll you would roll on a normal crit or what?
Doctor Gii |
That part I'm not so clear on. I've never actually played any of the games that use the mechanic.
How I believe it works:
Longsword attack: Nat 20
Confirm: 19 + to-hit modifiers
Confirm: 19 + to-hit modifiers
Confirm: 14 + to-hit modifiers (this is high enough to confirm)
In this case, you'd roll as if you'd hit 4 times (since x2 crits give you an extra roll of the dice). I think.
Nelossë |
Not quite, if memory serves. The exploding crit rule I learned goes as such:
First attack roll: Hit + Crit Threat
Second attack roll: Hit + Crit Threat
Third attack roll: hit
The damage rolls for the following scenarios would then play out as
Damage 1
Crit Damage 1
Crit Damage 2
Each layer of Crit works off the original, unmodified damage, so a Longsword that exploded once (like mine did) goes from a x2 to a x3 modifier. In the Kingmaker game I'm running, one of my players did the same thing (annihalating a mini-boss) with a Ranseur, which has a x3 crit mod. That exploded to a x5, because he did base damage (Damage 1), Crit 1 damage (Damage 2 + Damage 3), and Crit 2 Damage (Damage 4 + Damage 5).
Doctor Gii's example is right for a twice-exploded crit. I only exploded once, so I only got a x3. Another way to think of it is:
If the Crit Modifier of the weapon is xN, then every time it explodes it adds N-1 to the Crit Modifier. Thus, x2 becomes x3, then x4, then etc. x3 becomes x5, becomes x7, etc. x4 becomes x7, etc.

Okay, let me see if I can get this straight.
Even though your 3rd hit was "only" a hit and not a crit, that's where it stops? It actually has to "fit" within your crit range is what your saying for you to keep rolling, correct?
And with your 3rd attack being a hit, what happens if it's a miss? Does it get discarded and you then revert to typical crit damage?
Doctor Gii |
I imagine it'd just stop at the increment previous. It's just a confirmation roll, which should mean that you keep the damage that happened without that roll.

I hate to break in with it, and I hope you all don't mind me sharing what's going on with a group I've only just started PbPing with, but I wanted to give y'all a medical status update: After consulting with an oncologist in Warner Robins, Georgia this morning, I have learned that I have either a grade 2 or grade 3 astrocytoma. It IS cancerous. It is NOT the really bad kind (a glioblastoma). The oncologist I spoke to told me I have already begun the process of scheduling an appointment at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas with a very experienced neurosurgeon there. I'll find out tomorrow morning when exactly my consultation appointment is but it's almost definitely going to be either next Tuesday or next Thursday and my surgery will likely follow within a couple days of that.
For at least a few days following the surgery, it's probably a safe assumption that I'll be incommunicado with everybody...but hopefully I'll be cognizant enough to to pick back up with the game pretty quick after that. It would be months before I could safely return to work, so I would definitely have PLENTY of time to keep up with my PbP games!
Phillip0614 |
Medical Update: I'm at MD Anderson in Houston going through new patient stuff today. Very busy schedule until early afternoon meeting with different specialists and getting the actual surgery scheduled for tomorrow. I should be able to post again tonight, but after that I'm not sure when I'll be able to post again.
They're telling me to expect a local recover of 7-10 days, but it's really all gonna depend on me, so expect me to be incommunicado for around a week or so, beginning tomorrow. Sorry for having to do this to you guys! As soon as I'm able to, I'll let you all know what's going on. My wife has told me she'll sign on for me tomorrow after the surgery is over to let you know how it went.
Doctor Gii |
Thank your wife for us. As always, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Best of luck to you and swift recovery.
Exactly this. Stay tough, bud.

Phillip is feeling fine... well, as fine as one can feel after an all-day brain operation. They think they removed over 95% percent of his tumor. We'll know for sure after he has a post-op MRI.
He's awake, talking, walking, about to get to eat something... Just letting everyone know he's okay like he asked me to do!
Nelossë |
Out of curiosity, do we have any idea what calendar date the adventure began, roughly? If not, it's no problem. I'm just wondering for myself because I'm trying to get myself to keep journals/chronicles of in-game events as writing practice. I've seen pieces of a pretty good one (I think it was one of the members of the Dev's RotRL game), and I wanted to try to do something similar. Thinking of it as actually following through on my bardic duties as chronicler/tale-spinner.
Phillip0614 |
Hey gang! Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm back home, recovering from the surgery. Got some very good news from the neurooncologist. The mass that they found in my brain is a grade 2 astrocytoma, the lower grade it could've been. The neurosurgeon was able to remove (according to him) 95-98% of the tumor with the surgery, which my wife has already told you.
At present, because the tumor is grade 2 and the nature of grade 2 astrocytomas is that they are very slow-growing, I do not require any follow-up treatment in the form of radiation or chemotherapy. Moving forward, the treatment plan seems to be that I'm going to have to have an MRI done roughly every quarter to check and see if the tumor has started growing again. When it does, it is at that point that I'll need to seek out radiation/chemo or whatever...I'm not anywhere near 100%, but I'm back in the saddle and can resume my PbP games! So...what have I missed?
Nelossë |
Glad to hear you're doing alright. From what you said, and what I read, it sounds like it could have been a lot worse. Take it easy, and it's good to have you back.
Javell DeLeon |
That's fantastic to hear, bud. Glad to know things are looking up.
As far as what you've missed? Nothing really.
I don't think this thread is going to last. Which is a bit discouraging because I think this group has some good potential.
But in another sense, actually works for me because I'm going to have to withdraw. I hate to but RL has been tiresome of late(nothing like what you're going through, though, Phillip) but I find myself in more games than I can actually handle and I'm probably dealing with a bit of burnout.
Sorry if this causes any trouble for you folks. You all are a good group and I've enjoyed the little time we've ran in this thread.
Keep going strong, Phillip! Hope and pray everything continues to go well for you, bud.
You all keep on rockin'!

It's been weeks since we've heard from Pezmerga. Before that posts were getting sporradic. Do we as a group wish to continue this campaign? If so, do we want to seek out a new GM or hope that whatever has caused this disruption for Pezmerga resolves soon and he comes back around?
Phillip0614 |
Hey everyone! Please forgive my silence. I ended up having to go back into the hospital for a little while because of a scare regarding an infection at the site of my surgery and the possibility of it getting into my brain. Didn't happen, though.
Either way, I'm certainly interested in continuing with you guys and finding another GM.
Javell DeLeon |
I actually can't I have to track it down each time I check in. It's completely off my campaign page at this point.
If you look under your Previous Campaigns, you can click on it from there and it will pop up for you, bud.
What's up, folks? :)
A part of me wouldn't mind looking for another DM. I think it's gonna be tough, though. I will say, RL has been busy for me of late and my posting has taken a hit because of it. Not sure if it would be wise for me to pick back up in this one, but I could give it a shot.
@Kobad: Is it Zuko? Fire Lord Ozai? I'm curious as to what cartoon character you are referring.

a bit like zuko with his aging father being a bit like Iroh
I also have stone oracle character alias I use she is very much like Toph.
I actually have yet to figure out how to make the others within paizo rules yet

Alright, so we've got Nelosse, Javell, Kobad, Phillip and myself up for continuing, neh? I'm willing to post the call for a new GM. If I haven't seen one go up by the time I'm done lunch (~12:30 EST) I'll put the call out.

Hi guys,
I just posted on your DM recruitment thread and thought I'd drop a note here to give you a bit more info. First off having read through the adventure this far you guys sound like a great group. I've just started running the RoW campaign for my home group (which gets together monthly) and so have some experience with the material. I haven't run a PbP campaign before but have experience as a player. I'm a pretty avid (or perhaps that should be rabid :) poster so I should be able to keep things moving along.
Anyway let me know if you're interested and if so I'll see what's involved in getting DM access to the thread and get things moving.
Oh one other note, I haven't messed with Psionics yet Kogar so I'll need to get up to speed there.
