"Beats me. I don't go that part of town, and the gossip lately's been more 'bout that murderin' stuff."

At this point, some of the townsfolk realize who Orug is talking to. One mother grabs her kids by their arms and yanks them out of the store while a couple of older men give grizzled scowls as they walk out.

"Eh, don't mind them. Either you guys're innocent and they'll feel stupid 'bout it later, or you guys are the murderers an' you'll be hung, too. Though I'm rootin for the former, better for business that way, longer term!", the half-orc giving a toothy smile while Tessa silently facepalms behind him.

"Okay, that's all we needed to know. We're going to report this to the sheriff." Benson takes the note back and begins to head for the door.

"I'd be telling folks to lock themselves in their houses until the sheriff gives the all clear. This note said the murderer was about the strike again. Check on Tessa and watch out for that tall stranger you said was looking for me. I think he's behind this in some way."

With that Benson exits and heads at a run for the sheriff's house.

Cue the dramatic music!

The party heads to see Sheriff Luin. Raffelo is just leaving the Mayor's house and waves at you. "Hey fellas. Talked to the Sheriff for ya; nice guy, though his tea's a lil strong for my taste.", the slight flush of inebriation evident on the half-elf's face.

You can stop to talk to him if you wish, but assuming you're heading inside immediately.

The sound of clanging dishes can be heard as you make your way in. A pair of 'guards' immediately try to stop your entrance. "Whoa, there, where you think you're going guys?". Tobias immediately turns around and see you all after running in straight from the beer garden. "Huh, what's the matter fellas?"

Benson hands the sheriff the note, along with the letter that lured the Pathfinders to Dawnton, while he catches his breath. Pointing at the note given to Wyeth, he says, "Someone had a child deliver this to Wyeth." Benson glances as Wyeth, and continues, "The other letter was sent to the Pathfinders in Nerosyan about a week ago by the fellow Raffelo described to you. The handwritings are identical. I suspect they also match the note Ekira said she was given identifying the Pathfinders as the murderers. Thought you should know. We're willing to go to the house to see if we can find anyone in the attic, but the note said the murderer was about to strike again!"

Benson finally pauses to breath properly.

Leaving one of the guards behind, Tobias immediately steps outside to rouse the defenses.

The party makes way to the abandoned house. Near the edge of the town, the feeling of danger is already high. Hoping for the best, the party approaches the establishment.

The white house is two stories. All the windows that you can see, in the upper and lower floors, are open about a foot. The front door is closed.

@Wyeth: You see the back door to the home is also closed. There appears to be no one there.

@Benson: If you wish to climb, the wooden side shingles make it a DC 15 Climb check. I'll need two successful checks to get upstairs, or a single one to get in through an open first floor window.

Benson sheds his backpack and considers whether to shoot a grappling arrow with rope attached up at the rafters to give himself some added grip.

What advantage to his climbing skill check would a rope give? Rules say this would change the DC to 5.

"Dare I risk alerting the resident killer to my presence with this? The climb looks challenging without it."

@Benson: The DC 5 is for knotted rope, but if you take the time to do that, then you'll get that and with your Climb skill, you can't fail.

Some good rolls indeed!

@Benson: You spend a couple of minutes preparing your rope and attaching it to a grapple. You can't detect any noise from inside during this process.

With a well placed arrow, your rope is secured and you quietly make your ascent up the wall. Quietly stepping as you make your way up, you see that the open window you're adjacent is for a small, simply adorned bedroom. A candle is lit on a small dresser next to a bed that appears unused. To slip into the window, it'll be a DC 10 Acrobatics check to make it inside. Failing that means a DC 10 Reflex to catch onto the lip of the window or fall down the 20 feet! If you make it inside and still wish to be stealthy, I'll need a new Stealth check.

@Raevin: You are now below Benson, half way up the rope. Once he gets inside, I'll just need one more Climb check to get in. Plus side, since it's knotted, you can't fall down (at least until you get entering the window part).

@Wyeth: Hearing nothing, you open the door, exposing an empty storeroom. A couple of crates are all that remain, but they are open and devoid of any useful goods.

@Kintampo: You hear nothing through the door. Nodding to Marduk, you open the double doors. The foyer ahead leads off into several directions, including a pair of stairways going up that flank the entrance.

I (the player) think I see a door in the northeast corner of the storeroom on the north wall (leading into the smaller storeroom). I can see it leads nowhere, but Wyeth can't, and it seems like it might open into the house. So he's going to quietly and cautiously proceed to it, listen, gently check the handle, etc. as before.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

The gray things in the wall lines perpendicular to the south wall, are those drapes across openings? You didn't mention one for the storeroom, but I don't see any other way to get into the room with the checkerboard tile floor, so I'm assuming they're hanging "room dividers" of some sort. Even if that's the case, to make things easier Wyeth'll check the other door first.

EDIT: Looks like your post -- made while I was typing -- answers the question.

The door is the brown line at the bottom of your profile. The other doors on the map will have the same woody-brown line.

You easily get into the room and make your way in. The candle appears to have been lit for... an hour perhaps? You are certain that there is nothing in the room and the drawers and bed (above and below) are devoid of anything except for some dust. You notify Raevin of this with your positive hand gesture.

The partially open door creaks as you make your way into the hallway, but you immediately hold the door still to stop prevent any more noise. The lit passage has two more rooms on the same side of the hallway and a stairway to your left that descends to the ground floor.
