Ok, so between damage and Con damage, it looks like I'm down to 5 HP. We really need to kill it this turn. Blinded guys can fight with a 50% miss chance...
Talwin swings his mace again at the wretched creature.
Attack, bane, grappled, judgement: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 18
Damage?: 1d8 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (6, 3) = 16

GM Auke |

The creature again tries to engulf Talwin.
1d20 + 7 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 5 = 19 Succeeds! (almost forgot the additional +5 for unbroken grapple)
Damage: 6d4 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3) = 11 and 2 con damage
It drops the blood drained body of Talwin and spits at Muluk
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 Hits!
Fort save Muluk: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 Succeeds!

Ok, so I think that kills me dead. I've taken 44 points of damage. But the 4 total Con damage is the killer. It costs me 2 hp per level, or.another 10 HP by making my max HP 33 and my Con score 10. Max hp 33, 44 damage taken, I'm at -11 with a 10 Con. Not much to be done there...

Certainly looks that way... I'll recheck the math, but I think your calculations are correct. (original con was 13 or 14?)

![]() |

Original Con was 13, increased to 14 at 4th level, though I forgot to update my sheet. 5d8 HD is 28 HP plus 10 from Con, 5 from favored class. 43 total hp. My damaged Con score is 10. I took 4 + 18 + 11 + 11 = 44 damage. Plus loss of 10 from con dmg means 54 hp gone. So I'm at -11 hp one way or.the other. The only question is whether my natural con or.my damaged con determines if I'm dead.or just dying.

Unfortunately, the rules state that when your negative hit point total equals your Constitution score, you are dead. If I were asked to make a judgement call, I would have to say that since the rules do not explicitly state otherwise, this is your current Constitution score.

![]() |

And that is the interpretation I think I would make as GM too, but I don't want to put words in the mouth of ours. I do have enough prestige for a raise, but not enough for body recovery. So if you guys pull it out, don't leave me behind!

I give you my word as a paladin of Sarenrae; I will fall beside you, or you will come with us.

Targost manages to shoot the creature and kill it.
As the monster vanishes you find yourselves once again standing before the bronze door. To anyones surprise Talwin is lying on the floor in front of the bronze door alive, but staggering and with an enormous, skull-pounding headache. (so currently 0 hitpoits and the condamage is still there)
This headache imposes a –1 on all further attack rolls, damage rolls, and skill checks made while inside the Tangle.

Well, you had me going there! Anyway, did anyone ID and pick up that wand from back in the Morlock room? I don't suppose we can say that at least bringing it with us was part of our SOP? Along with other magical items, like the potions from the first fight?
Talwin sits up slowly, holding his head. He slowly closes and opens his eyes a few times, not sure of himself. He looks at his companions, then the huge door.
"So where is Pharasma's throne? Shouldn't she be weighing our souls just now, or must we wait?"

Spellcraft on magic items (not sure how many things were magical besides the potion, scroll and wand)
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 = wand
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 = scroll
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 = potion

GM Auke |

Spellcraft on magic items
As the scroll, potions and cloak are quite common, I told what they where already (perception can identify potions, read magic will identify scrolls and the stength of the aura will identify a cloak +1). The wand however is less common, but 12 is not enough to identify it.

So with the potion and healing I should be at full strength less the headache.
Talwin stands, thanking Muluk for the healing. He then faces the door, examining it carefully with Detect magic active.

GM Auke |

The door can easily be opened and you can enter the chamber behind it (see lower left side of the map). This chamber is lined with symbols like those near the entryway. There are obvious signs of a recent struggle, including blood and the corpse of a morlock. Drag marks slide through a pool of blood formed around the head of the morlock, indicating a creature was pulled through the sealed door on the east side of the room. The door in the east wall is intricately formed from bronze. Four interconnected, circular windows reveal a confusing series of cogs and sprockets within. Levers, dials, and knobs protrude from the frames surrounding the window, but nothing appears to be an obvious latch.

![]() |

Nope, sorry, but I will cast detect magic on the door and corpse.
Looking at the impressive door, and the morlock corpse, Targost cast a spell to detect magical emanations on both items.

GM Auke |

As you approach the door to scan it for magic, the door groans followed by a series of metallic clicks before the great circular plates on its face spin and rearrange at random. Levers spin and knobs turn, protrude, or retract, creating a rearranged mess of clockwork oddities. With a metallic creak, the bronze door in the west wall slams shut and bolts with an definitive clang. A few moments of ominous silence hang in the air briefly before a rushing, gurgling mass of water starts pouring in through several five-foot-wide chutes in the ceiling.

![]() |

"Well, that can't be good," Muluk mutters, examining the door.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

The door seems to react to you like a sentient being. It seems to challenge you to a game of thought. Comparable to a game of chess, where but one where the pawns will drown if they lose.

Every character can challenge the door, no assists possible, but as most characters will need a turn to get to the door, it's just Targost this turn.

Yes, thanks! Didn't realize we had to be adjacent. Now, each of us challenging the door is a separate chance to openor close chutes? Like if we have 2 successes and 2 failures we make no progress?
