No worries, glad to help out. It just kinda came to me and it seemed to fit in my head. Glad you liked it. Yeah there are a lot of really good options out there and a lot of interesting builds, depending on how you want it to manifest and progress. :) I look forward to seeing the full character.

It dont sound as a trained class, perhaps sorcerer or fighter.

Submitting Mellisa Varnay, a young lass who wandered westward into Varisia, the land of her ancestors. She moved to Korvosa, and unfortunately was recruited into the order of Gray Maidens during Queen Ileosa's brief but cruel reign. She joined innocently enough, thinking the order of female warriors would be an honorable one. But she was indoctrinated, maimed and soon she was willingly committing the heinous deeds her superiors bade her do. Mercifully, Queen Ileosa's reign was ended before she was too lost. Tainted, scarred and haunted from her deeds as one of the queen's honor guard, she escaped Korvosa with a few of her sisters-in-arms.

Dark Stuff:

As they wandered, aimlessly, seeking purpose, she and her fellow former Gray Maidens drifted around Varisia. Eventually, Mellisa realized it was fast approaching five years from when she left Trunau. She couldn't believe what she had become; her wide-eyed optimism and ever-present smile was now lost under her scarred face. She somehow managed to keep her hopeknife all this time, and she studied it, weighing a momentous decision. Does she go back home and see her old friends, despite the things she has done? Or should she use it, as it was intended, to prevent the unthinkable from happening?

Unfortunately, she realized, she missed that opportunity back in Korvosa. Taking her life now would be the ultimate failure, and concession to the evil of Ileosa. Her only option was to keep living. Her hopeknife hanging openly around her neck, she finally returns to Trunau, dreading the reunions.

I'm going with a phalanx fighter -- pretty tanky, and using polearms to deal with the reach issues of the giants.

Before I go completely back to the drawing board... What are your feelings about swapping to Unchained as soon as it's readily available on the PRD? I think that's usually about a month after release, so most Likely before we level to 4...

I make no promises about Unchained before I read it. You would be better off not planning for it for this game.

FYI The Gameplay thread is up. Remember to role-play the NPC interaction yourself. I'll step in with some tidbits here and there but don't count on it. You're advised to stay relatively sober.

cheers

This sounds interesting, but before I get too deep into fleshing out a particular character, I just want to make sure I understand the character creation guidelines. Have I read correctly that your rules standard is the PRD, so the archetypes in Inner Sea Magic would not be available?

Qunnessaa wrote:

My rules standard is the Pathfinder SRD. I don't know if the archetypes in Inner Sea Magic are in there, yet.

Dotting will work on a character soon

I don't know if all of them are but I know some of ISM classes and archetypes are in the pfsrd. Depending on what it is they may have changed the name so it's not setting specific. But mechanically it's there.

DM Jubal, I would like to present to Menas Dalaston, newly-returned native of Trunau from Vigil in Lastwall, and defender of Iomedae.

Also, a question, will familiars fall under the DM's control as NPCs, or will players control their own familiars?

TheWaskally wrote:

Familiars will be run by the players as a rule. On an exceptional basis, I will NPC them if they are asked to do something dangerous and will appropriately communicate to the PC an emotion such as fear or panic...

EDIT Please follow Doomed Hero's PbP guide in the Gameplay thread. Nem, I'm looking at you.

cheers

Dotting for interest. I'll try to get an idea together tomorrow.

Whoops, missed that the gameplay thread was open.

Hope that entrance was clean, don't want to step on any toes there.

Is it necessary that our character partake in the tavern RP that is currently ongoing in order to be selected?

Drawing board. Got it.

Hotaru of the Society wrote:

It's not necessary, but it's to the applicant's advantage. Remember the characters are supposed to be old friends. You can wait to show up near the end of Recruitment if you want to minimize potentially pointless posts.

Dylos here, I have now made the mechanical choices for my submission (aside from animal companion), and will now begin working on fluff. I should note that Balgret has access to the teamwork feat Paired Opportunists.

Also, Balgret shouldn't have to worry about detecting as Evil, since her deity is Lawful Neutral (but oddly viewed as a necessary evil among the dwarves, odd for a deity which can have paladins).

:P I'm more worried about getting a permanent little box at the bottom of my character stuff that shows one more thing that either failed or that I didn't get into. I suppose I'll live, though :p

Godric will now be a Sacred Huntsmaster with a Megaloceros for an animal companion with a strong focus on teamwork feats with said AC. He left the village and found religion and his other half. I am thinking Erastil or Cayden Cailean. Erastil fits with his original work ethic and community driven thoughts, but Cayden Cailean fits more with leaving to find himself. Slowly building up my character here.

If any applicant has any extra time, I would be tremendously grateful for a list of applicants like this:

Hammers (damage dealers)
Link to profile name, race, class, alignment

Anvils (tanks)
Link to profile name, race, class, alignment

Arms (support & buffs)
Link to profile name, race, class, alignment

Please refer to TarkXT's seminal post on party roles.

thanks

That list seem not wide enough to fit Nem (secondary fighter, scout, skill-monkey)

I'm not honestly sure where Balgret would fit on that either, she does have 20 AC, and doesn't do much damage until she gets agile light picks. Idealistically Balgret would be more of a damage dealer, but as mentioned she needs agile weapons to deal real damage.

Well I know I certainly could act as an arm. Bard and all. Okay with a bow, but better with inspiring courage and useful spells. If I remember correctly, Giants and the like should be uh... poor with Will saves, so Hideous Laughter might see some use :3 Then again, if things go poorly. Then again, so should Expeditious Retreat, Grease, or CLW if we get into trouble.

Oh I forgot how much I loved bards.

EDIT: Inn other news, I didn't forget to extend Keltza's elitist attitude towards giants... she just hasn't met one yet.

I'm working on a list now. Should be up in half-hour. I'll try to have categories that fit people in.

Beltzer, put me down as Support!, he says while casually twirling a large Earthbreaker over his head. :P

It seems to me like there are few to no divine casters and NO healer whatsoever... if you'll want, I could shift over to playing a Life Oracle focused on Conjuration Spells. It won't change my stats all too much and it won't affect my backstory at all.

I think I'll do that, but remind me to keep at least one point in Perform: Sing.

Lys is definitely a Hammer, I think the only one ranged in the bunch.

Balgret is a warpriest, that's a divine spellcaster, just not a primary spellcaster.

I'm definitely an anvil.

Anvil - Tanks and close range control

  • Mellisa - Human Fighter, Avoidance defender
  • Karrdas - Human ranger, Frontliner

    Hammer - The pain bringers

  • Elize - Human crossbowslinger, Ranged focus
  • Varin - Titan Fighter, two-handed weapon focus

Forge - The 2nd line, Auxiliary combatants with combat utility

  • Menas - Human Paladin, 2nd line fighter with secondary healer
  • Torean - Dwarf Ranger, Mid ranger

Support - Combat buffers and battlefield control

  • Balgret - Dwarf Warpriest, Combat Support and healing
  • Beltzer - Half-orc Skald, Melee combat buffer with self healing

Utility - Out of combat priority with secondary combat roles

  • Nem - Human Slayer, Secondary fighter and scout
  • Nerak - Human Wizard, Utility spell caster and blaster
  • Keltza - Half-orc Life oracle, divine spells and healing

I've only had a brief look at people's builds. I can't predict what people are going into so feel free to correct me and I'll update this.

I'm not completely sold on 'auxiliary combatants' title but I hope people see what I mean. Basically those builds that have hybrid roles and bring a unique spin to the combat.

    Edit: updated with the suggestions

  • Whew bloody good work Bel. The only suggested change I'd make is that I will be going into Utility as a Life Oracle, helping out with divine spells and healing.

I'm pretty sure Varin was making a joke. A giant hammer-wielding giant is definitely in the Hammer category. It's 3d6+9 per swing, I believe.

Oh right.. way too early for me!
Will change it in a bit.

Nerak is a transmuter aiming to enter the cyphermage prestige class. Making him evenly split between support, utility, and arcane blaster.

    Nice list!

Only change I'd say is that Karrdas won't be doing any switch hitting. He's lined up for TWF feats at this point, and his Dexterity sucks.

That sounds about right for Menas, Beltzer. Thanks.

I linked the original post by TarkXT on roles above. I would encourage everyone to read the post and position their character.

For example, I put Nerak as an Anvil, due to his abilities to control the battlefield.

    cheers

Haha Sorry yeah I was joking. I'm literally carrying a bloody huge hammer. :)

@Jubal: Well I've put two sections of battlefield control. One of general control and one for close range ones. I've seen TarkXTs ones before but I also find those roles a little narrow.

@Karrdas: Sorry I forgot switch hitting was also a build type swapping between range and melee. I was using it more between two weapon and two handed form what I can tell form your build.

Man! I've forgotten how fricken addictive pbp can be with the right group!!

Current role seems appropriate for Torean although leaning towards hammer.

I switched my backstory and stats appropriately so my character sheet is updated, stats changed, and backstory changed slightly. It is... a bit darker, but there you go. The only thing left to do is actually buy gear.

So... I suppose this is my new submission! I am more focused on Charisma based skills than before so I will be intimidating enemies and buffing allies with spells, as well as being an AWESOME healer.

I just wanna say that at this point, regardless of whether I make it in to this Campaign or not, I am enjoying my time rp-ing with you all. I haven't had a PbP to play in in a long time, this is actually one of the first games I have applied to in probably a year and a half to two years and I am damn glad I applied to it.

Thanks for making this Recruitment process fun guys. Ya'll rock!

You get a +1 from me Varin. When this is all said and done, I could say that you are all bloody amazing roleplayers. When the final selections are made, I hope that the party dynamic is interesting and stays strong.

As I find myself in a position of working full time, doing overtime, and trying to find another job due to reasons, that I'm going to need to spend this recruitment time on those things instead of rebuilding from the ground up and submitting.

I wish you all a world or excitement and fun!

    DM Jubal,

How do you feel about the Medium from the Occult Adventures playtest? I was going to wait to apply to a PbP until the final book came out, but I've been following your gameplay thread. The roleplay level is fantastic and I'd like to be a part of it. I know in July I might need to make adjustments, but if you're okay with that I will craft a character based on the playtest doc and developers comments in the playtest thread.

    Dolarre wrote:

The Occult stuff doesn't do anything for me, so I haven't been following the playtest. I'm going to put it in the same category as the Unchained material.

    cheers

OK. I've redone Beltzer's list (Thank you, Beltzer) using a more conventional categorization. I added links and alignments as a proxy for how well characters will work together. Please feel free to suggest a different category for your character.

I will start reviewing characters and providing feedback. But my initial skimming for alignment found several characters in need of organization in their profile and content.

    Martial

  • Mellisa - Human Fighter, Avoidance defender - Lawful Evil
  • Karrdas - Human ranger, Frontliner – Chaotic Good
  • Varin - Titan Fighter, two-handed weapon focus - Neutral Good
  • Torean - Dwarf Ranger, Mid ranger – Neutral Good

    Skills

  • Elize - Human crossbowslinger, Ranged focus – Lawful Neutral
  • Nem - Human Slayer, Secondary fighter and scout – Neutral Good

    Divine

  • Menas - Human Paladin, 2nd line fighter with secondary healer - Lawful Good
  • Balgret - Dwarf Warpriest, Combat Support and healing - Lawful Evil
  • Keltza - Half-orc Life oracle, divine spells and healing - Lawful Evil

    Arcane

  • Nerak - Human Wizard, Utility spell caster and blaster – Lawful Neutral
  • Beltzer - Half-orc Skald, Melee combat buffer with self healing – Neutral Good

  • Thinking about it some more, I've realized that I'm not likely to come up with a character any time soon that I can easily imagine would care all that much about killing giants and, worse, hanging around the Hold of Belkzen, and everyone else seems to be hitting it off so well that I don't want to interfere and muddy the waters of the submission pool, so I'll quietly take my leave. Good luck to you all, and have fun!

OK. Please find my first installment of reviews. Please reread the initial recruitment post that I'm quoting myself:

    DM Jubal wrote:

Submissions: Please create a profile with the relevant info contained within. I'm looking for profiles that are easy to read. If your profile looks like someone vomited a random block of numbers, words, and letters into a pile, I'm not going to bother reading it. Here is a decent example of what I'm looking for. Your profile does not have to be identical to this layout, but it should be similar.

All submitted characters will require the following: Character Description, Personality, and Background. Please put some effort into this. As mentioned before, I'm not looking for perfunctory descriptions. A couple of bland sentences is not going to inspire me to consider an application.

    Mellisa:
Missing Character Description and Personality. Background is too thin to comment on. Would like to see how/when you took each feat and the math of each skill bonus. Missing carrying capacity; although, I don’t plan on being a stickler.

    Karrdas:
Would like to see how/when you took each feat and the math of each skill bonus. Missing carrying capacity; although, I don’t plan on being a stickler. Was he born in Trunau? Who were his parents? Instead of the hopeknife, maybe connect the new tribe with an uncle or aunt.

    Varin:
Would like to see how/when you took each feat and the math of each skill bonus. Missing carrying capacity; although, I don’t plan on being a stickler. I would prefer if don’t take the Family Ties drawback. I think Sara Morningstar is the primary blacksmith in Trunau.

    Torean :
Background is a bit thin. I think Sara Morningstar is the primary blacksmith in Trunau. Would like to see how/when you took each feat. Missing carrying capacity; although, I don’t plan on being a stickler. You won’t get much use from your story feat for the foreseeable future. You would be better off with Big Game Hunter.

    cheers

Can you hold off on reviewing mine? I am still transitioning information.
