The redcap glares at Auric but keeps his hold on his scythe
Clair Vavassour |
Clair moves off of the stairs and up to the door. She temporarily leaves her scythe with one hand to point at the redcap, and casts burning disarm on its scythe.
Ref 13 to drop the scythe in a reflex, or take 2d4 fire damage when holding onto it.
Boram Sandyfoot |
Boram lobs a bomb at the creature, but shapes it in such a way as to avoid damaging his comrades.
Standard action: Attack redcap (precise bombs avoid up to 3 squares)
Attack (Bomb (1/6) vs. Touch AC, Point Blank Shot): 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 1 = 19
Damage (Bomb (1/6), Point Blank Shot): 2d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4, 5) + 3 + 1 = 13
GMG |
This weapon consists of a long wooden shaft with protruding handles and a sharp curved blade set at a right angle.
Burning Disarm causes the metal of the scythe's blade to grow red hot and does nothing to the redcap.
The redcap shrieks as the bomb hits it. "Ouch! You want to dance halfling?"

At the last moment Clair reconsiders. She casts shield of faith on herself instead, increasing her defenses.
Included the +2 deflection bonus in my quick stats.
Garret Longthorn |
Realising he is fighting the redcap alone, and has little room to maneuver and take a shot, Garret steps around the fey and focuses on keeping the creatures attention on him while he plays defensively.
"Is that the best you've got?
Garret will 5 foot step and go Full Defensive, making his AC 24.
GMG |
The creature grins and doffs it red hat at Garret in a flourish "That was the opening"
It then proceeds to miss Garret with both it's weapon and the kick that follows. While it is doing so you see some of it's wounds closing again!

Auric, you forgot your knowledge nature roll...
Knowledge Nature Auric: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
You know that the rumors about their redcaps are actually true:
Red Cap (Su) A redcap wears a tiny, shapeless woolen hat, dyed over and over with the blood of its victims. While wearing this cap, a redcap gains a +4 bonus on damage rolls and fast healing 3. These benefits are lost if the cap is removed or destroyed. Caps are not transferable, even between redcaps. A redcap can create a new cap to replace a lost cap with 10 minutes of work, although until the redcap takes a standard action to dip the cap in the blood of a foe the redcap helped to kill, the cap does not grant its bonuses.
You also remember that a redcap truly loathes good deities
Irreligious (Ex) Bitter and blasphemous, redcaps cannot stand the symbols of good-aligned religions. If a foe spends a standard action presenting such a holy symbol, any redcap that can see the creature must make a DC 15 Will save or become frightened for 1 minute and attempt to flee. A redcap who successfully saves is shaken for 1 minute.
Garret Longthorn |
Garret holds his position, dropping his enchanted longbow and instead drawing his longsword. Taking a swift moment to focus on the redcap, the lucky halfling braces for his allies to provide him with a flank.
Free action to drop bow, move action to draw longsword, swift action to activate Ranger's Focus against the redcap and then a readied action to attack when someone takes his flank. I'll make the flanking attack roll now to prevent delays.
Longsword w/flank and Ranger's Focus: 1d20 + 6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 4 + 2 = 251d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
GMG |
Sunder and steal combat maneuvers work. Disarm won't. The cap is drenched in blood and wool does not burn well, so fire damage won't do it. You might come up with other things which I haven't thought of yet, just ask.
Boram Sandyfoot |
Just looked at the map - seems Boram needs to make his way into the room. Oh, and, fwiw, the redcap has to make its reflex roll (for grease) every round it uses the scythe.
Move action: As indicated on map
Standard action: Drink Dex mutagen (Lasts 30 minutes, AC 22)
Clair Vavassour |
"Auric!" Clair yells upstairs after seeing the redcap's wounds close. "You're the bard here! What can you tell us about this thing?"
This is the part where I assume Auric shares all the info in his spoiler.
"The cap, got it!" Clair replies to Auric.
She 5-foot steps into a flanking position with Garret. If Garret's attack is aimed at the cap and destroys it, Clair will attack the redcap itself. If Garret's attack isn't aimed at the cap, or is but doesn't destroy it, Clair attacks the fey's cap.
Not sure of the HP and hardness of wool, but destroying the cap can't be much harder than damaging an object made of cloth! :)
+1 Scythe, +2 Flanking: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 = 27 Damage: 2d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 + 1 = 11
Confirm crit: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 2 = 22 Damage: 6d4 + 12 + 3 ⇒ (3, 3, 4, 2, 4, 1) + 12 + 3 = 32
Wow... really hoping Garret's got the cap, so I can use that attack on the redcap itself xD
GMG |
Sorry Clair, I read "redcap" as the creature, not his hat. The focus is because of his ranger's ability. I will treat your attack as a sunder attempt. I had already decided to treat the cap as being made of leather (harness 2, 5 hp)
Power Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 - 2 = 24
Damage: 2d4 + 10 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 10 + 6 = 20
Clair moves into position and Garret hits the fey, but again his strike fails to penetrate the fey's resistances. Then Clair swings her scythe, aiming at the tiny hat on top of the fey's head. The redcap immediately retaliates and strikes at Clair. She almost falls over but manages to destroy the hat!
My hat! I will kill you dead for that!

"Me, a bard?" scoffs Auric. "I'm an archaeologist, scholar and archer maybe, but I've never been called a bard - perhaps because I can't sing?"
Bard is a class, not a profession (at least not for Auric).
Auric matches his words with acts and shoots two well-aimed arrows at the redcap, guided by his luck.
Shortbow, RS, Luck, Heroism, PBS (cold iron arrows): 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 311d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 = 8

Shortbow, RS, Luck, Heroism, PBS (cold iron arrows): 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 8 - 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 141d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 = 8

The redcap's sudden attack disables Clair, but she manages to finish her attack. However, the strain from finishing the attack causes Clair to feel light-headed.
"You just did," she mutters to the redcap, and passes out.
I used a standard action while disabled, meaning I lost 1 more HP when the standard action was completed :( Ah well, at least the cap's gone!
Garret Longthorn |
Seeing Clair go down, Garret shifts around the redcap towards her, swinging again with his longsword.
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size you menace!"
Longsword w/Ranger's Focus: 1d20 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 4 = 221d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Yakima hops off the stairs and moves to behind Clair where she shoots the Redcap with her readied crossbow with the cold iron bolt.

Clair isn't down yet... staggered at 0 hp
Yakima hits the redcap with her bolt which leaves a tiny sizzling hole in it's shoulder.

Yakima's magnificent shot goes right into the eye of the Redcap. Sizzling it disappears entirely into the brain of the evil fey who slowly keels over...
Out of combat! Not so sad after all
Clair Vavassour |
"Thanks, Yakima!"
Clair puts away her own wand and smiles wryly. "That was rather close, but we made it."
While Auric inspects the redcap, Clair inspects the scythe to see if it's any better than her own.
Spellcraft, with detect magic: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
She then places her ear against the door to the next space, listening for sound on the other side.
Maybe there's another redcap who's singing...

There is no body of a female spellcaster, but you can see that at least five humans and a similar number of bugbears have been killed here.
You open the door in the south wall. The walls, floors, and ceiling of the next half-moon-shaped room are covered in hundreds of mirrors of all shapes and sizes, some still intact, but most broken. You entered through a a beige stone door built into the northern wall; the southern wall sports two milk-white stone doors of a similar design.
Clair Vavassour |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
"Hmm... yes I see a woman inside that mirror. You think that's the missing woman, Yakima?"
Clair uses detect magic to inspect the mirrors, and tries to figure out what's up with them.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
GMG |
Yakima averts her eyes, trying not to peer into the mirrors.
Clair takes the opposite approach, investigating the mirrors. After a while the figure becomes clearer, eventually transforming into an elven woman standing in the background of every mirror in the room. She is elderly and somewhat frail looking, but still quite beautiful, and is dressed in long, light green robes and an ornate jade headpiece. You don't recognize her.
The mirrors radiate a moderate lingering aura of divination and illusion
Garret Longthorn |
Not wanting to cause further problems and lacking magical knowledge, Garret hangs back to act as a rear guard.
