Garridan is not surprised by Layne's reaction as he has little patience for this priest. "Jhonas, I think you'll be taking us to see the head priest now, he suggests.

Kaylayne looks around for more foes, rock in hand and ready to throw. She is clearly not happy. She turns her ire to Jhonas.

"F!&~ that and f!&$ you! You stood by and let them try to rob us! And now you ask that we don't do anything?!" Kaylayne walks up to Jhonas' face. "WHAT THE F@*~ IS WRONG WITH YOU!? IS THIS WHAT YOUR GOD TEACHES!?!"

Kaylayne looks ready to slap the 'priest', but holds herself back.

"Gimme one g+%@+%n reason why I wouldn't end these thug's lives and another for why I shouldn't end yours. I came here seeking council, someone who wanted help...and you gave me war. I will *NOT* allow others to suffer the same fate. I WILL NOT!"

Jhonas collapses under the weight of Kaylayne's words. From the floor he weeps, "I don't know what you're talking about! Please don't hurt me!"

His shaky hand peeks out from the ball and points up the stairs behind him, "He's up there, just don't kill us. Please!"

A little fast forward here, feel free to abuse Jhonas further if you prefer...

The party makes their way up the stairs behind the quivering priest. A simple timber partition splits this room into two bedrooms, each furnished with a modest bed, a plain writing desk and chair, a wardrobe, and a bookcase. The room to the west hosts a collection of empty wine bottles, while the one to the east is fastidiously organized.

In the back portion (with the wine bottles) an elderly priest lies in bed, clearly ill. His skin is ashen and sweaty, his eyes sunken. It is clear that someone has been caring for him though - there is a cold-compress on his forehead and the room is clean.

Nope. Nope. Nopenopenope. NOPE! NEVER AGAIN!

Kaylayne stands for a moment, realizing the priest is either complicit or an accomplice...or very very stupid. It angers her even more.

She draws her dagger as she walks to the body of Beltias. She (attempts to, unless stopped) drives her dagger around the man's neck. Then she does the same to Garspheal, then Badeye.

With each slice more tears of rage, regret, and sadness drip from her face and onto the bodies of thugs.

Never again. NEVER!

While others go upstairs, she sobs on the Church floor.

The bard gathers the loot and wonders about the key. When he's about to ask, he sees Layne...

Dimitrio stands dumbfounded while Kaylayne slices into the fallen thugs. Obviously something I don't know

He then raises his hands in front of the woman with the bloody dagger in a non-threatening way, "Ok, Layne? Anything I can do?"

Ederin finds a fair amount of wine, but no evidence it's been touched in some while (days, maybe weeks). He also finds a pouch of gold, fairly well hidden, among the bottles with 136gp in it. Do you take it? The room is very clean and simple otherwise.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Jhonas continues to blubber to himself and stay on the floor in the hallway a long while - seemingly trying to decide what to do. Eventually he gets up, and facing god knows what inner demons, goes back to the soup line and tries to comfort some of the ‘locals’ there.

Kaylayne and Dimitrio can hear him saying, ”There there, it’ll be all-right. We weathered the last gang, we’ll weather this one too. Just keep the soup coming - it’s all we can do.” He seems strengthened by his faith as he does god’s work for his parish. ”Father Padrick will get better…” he says unconvincingly to the kitchen staff.

She plaintively ignores Jhonas lest he rouse her ire again and mopes her way upstairs to see what is taking Ederin. She pauses to check on the Old Priest.

After listening to the remarks he weighs in, "Lief, I may have done the same thing if this was my Sanctuary." He shrugs his shoulders, "Ed's got the right of it what's done is done we just have to move forward best we can."

You should feel free to Sense Motive any time there is new material presented to catch a lie, but otherwise anytime things seem to 'change' is fine. You should always note though what you're after - i.e. are you trying to see if what he said is truthful, are you trying to find out if he likes the color blue, etc.

Ederin:
Jhonas seems very afraid, it's true, and likely a more or less constant state in his life as well as he handles it.

Jhonas trembles a little as his new lords fight, but dutifully, and quietly, does as he's told. He leaves the soup line in the hands of a rather ugly matron who seems to be able to handle things without him just fine.

He takes you out through the main door and up the stairwell (I've cleared the map so you can see the layout if you wish). There are a series of small rooms, once used for a variety of things for the church, but recently taken over by the group you just ran off and killed.

A few bedrooms, a large 'flophouse' space for actual beggers is still in use by the church, a room devoted to healing, and torture, and a sort of fighting pit. But not for people. You find a few scorpions in boxes labelled “Spiker,” “Jabs,” “Bugsy,” and “Pedros.”

You also find evidence that someone has been 'milking' the scorpions for their poison.

Jhonas asks, with more confidence, "Will we be able to continue to use this room for indigents? Beltias let us but I understand if you need more space for your men." he looks at Kaylayne, "And, uh, women."

Jhonas doesn't enter any room, rather staying in the hallway, almost respectfully, like he's not allowed in those rooms without permission. He seems to do as he's told quite nicely.

You have not searched beyond take-10 in any room or space. I, as a rule, assume a casual glance around whenever I do descriptions like this, but if you want to delve, you need to say so and roll or take-20 with all the time that entails.

Following the timid man upstairs Garridan is glad to leave the grisly scene downstairs. What is wrong with Layne, this is not like her. But then again what do I really know about my companions.

He stops at the room with the scorpions, This is strange. he stops an searches the room a little more thoroughly.

Guardian searches the scorpion room and finds a few bottles that were used to milk the scorpions and one mostly full one. It looks like, from examining the bottles and beakers in the immediate area, someone has been processing the poison in some way.

Craft Alchemy, Knowledge Nature DC 17:
This has been processed to make it an ingested poison rather than one delivered through injury. Someone has had some skill.

The bottles and scorpions somehow match the assessment that the old priest was poisoned or was being poisoned.

Dimitrio voices his opinion to the others, "Someone is poisoning the old priest, which is why he can't get well. He's not drunk or sick, he's poisoned!"

"I don't much about poisons but I know that the scorpion injects its poison so we should look for puncture marks on the priest to confirm this. Also, there should be a needle here somewhere..."

Dimitri doesn't find anything new, and doesn't find any needles.

Kaylayne sighs, looking at the alchemical equipment (which she doesn't know much about), then to the scorpions (something she does).

"'Naturally,'" Kaylayne quips, trying to find some humor after her outbursts, "looks like they were processing scorpion venom for ingestion, rather than for a blade. Whomever was poisoning the priest, was doing it orally."

Kay's eyes flicker to Dimitrio, then to Jhonas.

"Say Jhonas, who did you say feed the Ol' Man Priest?" Kay asks totally 'innocently' and totally non-probingly.

What's done is done. Move on here. Nothing to see. We'll talk later. Maybe.

Lief waves his hand in resignation, letting his eyes roam from the soupline to the new gang being shown their quarters as they go off to investigate.

"I'll be right here, when you're done."

Lief sees no Gendarmes on the streets. During the day they tend not to wander much, their busier times are in the evenings and at night. So not a lot of Gendarmes just found wandering at this time (you're still before lunch).

You enter the Publican house and speak to one of the priests. He seems to be having much to much fun to leave just now but he will sell you potions of lessor restoration for 300gp (in a handsome beer stein). If you buy one, and bring the man here, he’ll even cast another - on the house!

The rest of the party collects the bodies and starts cleaning up. They’re done well before the rest of the party returns and have time to search the thieves old rooms if they wish (Kaylayne may try again - everyone who searches gets two rolls). That said, the bodies are just piled up in the street in front of the church I assume. Not a pretty sight, but certainly one that will attract the Gendarme eventually.

Dimitrio had accompanied Garridan just in case the thugs decide to take their revenge.

"Cheer up, I'm sure helping the priest is the right thing to do and we'll get paid somehow."

He then searches the rooms before the gendarme or thugs come back.
