Dimitrio sighed and responded, "I'm afraid nothing useful. The only good news is that he did pay Smeed. However, there are no news as to what happened to him after he left money-lender's office."

The bard then decided to throw in a red herring to see how Saul would react. "We did hear that Larur was seen with one of Zincher's thugs last night but that is something that we still need to follow up on."

The bard waited to see if anyone else added anything before asking, "So what did you find?" Trying to not be noticed himself, the bard scrutinized Saul's demeanor as well as his words to try to discern the truth.

He assured us that your business relations with him are normal, and he respects you for being able to pay on time. His office shows nothing suspect- no broken furniture, no rolled up carpet with feet sticking out from the end, no blood stains in the middle of the floor. He does have what sounds like a baboon, but we didn't ask to see it."

Lief looks to the others, then back to Saul. "You now have something you'd like to share with us?"

If Saul notices your subterfuge, he doesn’t say. Nor does he seem surprised by what you say, but he does seem genuinely disappointed. ”OK. I could have sworn Smeed was somehow involved, that little snipe.” He shrugs, and apologizes for the goose chase.

”I might have another one, but this feels less goose-y - particularly if Larur was taken by Zincher. Apparently there is a meeting of our enemies tonight - a planning meeting to take out the Gold Goblin once and for all I heard. I guess Cromarcky (the overlord) isn’t going to protect us after all. Damnable Gendarmes…”

”The crime lords aren’t going to expose themselves directly, so I’m thinking so this will just be a meeting of their lieutenants. Right now, we have them on the ropes - their reputations are in tatters and my position in the community grows ever stronger. If they’re going to make a move, it’ll be soon. I suspect they are going to hostage Larur, or use him for some sort of leverage. Perhaps he’ll even be there tonight.”

”Go check it out and see what they’re planning, so we can thwart them. Find out what they know of Larur. Find out where they have him. Of course, if the opportunity arises, and you think you have the upper hand, bring them to justice…” he says menacingly.

”They’re meeting in the Boneyard - the area known as the Spar. Do you know it?” Saul explains he used to use the spot as a drop off point and knows it well. He goes on to describe the spot, and two approaches, one from the North, and one from the South. The Southern approach is better, but all approaches are through swampy terrain so you’ll have to move slowly to remain quiet - if you go.

Saul seems to be telling the truth, in as far as you can determine.

Garridan:
Nice roll, but as much as you search his face for a lie, you think he's telling the truth as well.

Kaylayne looks outside as if to reminder herself what time is it. Two posts ago it was mid afternoon.

"Yeah, sure, I could go," Kaylayne mutters. "We might have enough light to get to the shops for things that might help stay undetected if we're going to do this right."

Kaylayne looks to see what the others think.

Roll 20 Map

It is still mid-afternoon. The meeting of the lieutenants is tonight at dusk a few hours from now.

Kaylayne knows the Boneyard, as would you all. At least a little. This deceptively named place actually serves as the city’s dump and ship’s graveyard rather than the intended final resting place for the once-living, though there are certainly enough corpses that end up concealed here to give most city graveyards a run for their money.

Its name is derived from the many old hulks and collections of ships’ ribs that protrude from the swampy ground. The whole area is a partially flooded salt marsh that is generally 2 or 3 feet deep, although some hidden patches of quicksand are much deeper.

The tidal influx keeps a mild current swirling through the marsh that stirs the garbage around until it collects in various clumps of decomposing compost that eventually form stable isles - some supporting considerable vegetation - within the swamp.

Abandoned ships are towed up into the swamp from the bay during high tide by flat bottomed skiffs and then set adrift. They quickly settle into the shallow waters, and the pull of the tide here is too weak to float any of them back out, though some of them do slowly change position over time due to the inexorable tidal forces.

The Spar is a specific place in the Boneyard apparently (according to Saul), known to a few criminal elements as a nice quiet meeting point - just a frame of reference. You haven't heard of it before now.

Ederin:
You are correct on both counts. It is a swamp.

"Oh, that's a good question." says Saul as he thinks a moment. "I don't really know. It's two crime families so I'd figure two guys, plus a few peons for each, but not too many really I should think. Do you want some Gold Goblin guards to go with you? They'd not be stealthy at all, but if you think you need the muscle..."

"If you do go early, be well hidden. I don't want to scare them off - especially if they know where poor Larur is. We might not get another chance at this."

With the potential for sloshing in the water, you'd guess noise is going to be the tougher problem. That area of the Boneyard has plenty of cover from ships, trees, etc. Noise is the big give away.

Roll 20 Map

GM Rolls:
1d20 ⇒ 7

You seem to be ready, so we’ll move on. If you have further preparation, we’ll backtrack…

Saul shakes your hands and wishes you luck as you depart the Gold Goblin. You make your way through town and to the Boneyard swamp just beyond.

Climbing over Riddleport’s eastern ridge, the Boneyard Cut Pass ascends almost 200 feet at a near 45 degree angle. Garbage is carried over this pass on mule-drawn carts in well-worn ruts and then down at a shallower angle to a ledge 40 feet above the salt marsh. At the terminus of this path is a sheer cliff and the caretaker’s hut. The caretaker, Hyram Crooge, maintains a constant bonfire for the burning of some trash and dumps the rest over the cliff edge into the marsh below.

You carefully skirt his hut and make your way down the path to the north and into the Boneyard proper.

This deceptively named place actually serves as the city’s dump and ship’s graveyard rather than the intended final resting place for the once living, though there are certainly enough corpses that end up concealed here to give most city graveyards a run for their money. Its name is derived from the many old hulks and collections of ships’ ribs that protrude from the swampy ground.

Though several scavenging creatures are known to inhabit the fertile scavenging fields of the Boneyard, including the dangerous swamp barracuda and immense cockroaches, you see nothing of note as you approach the Spar.

You reach the area well before the appointed hour (map updated). The areas of open water are mostly free of ground cover, but the land is covered with vegetation and can be easily used to hide. There are trees everywhere. All terrain is difficult (either 2-3’ of water or thick vegetation inhibits your movement) so keep that in mind. It is more likely that people will come from the southern approach as it’s closer to town, but either is viable. East and West are choked off with vegetation.

Others can help you hide, essentially ‘burying’ you in marsh plants (take - 20 stealth) but one person has to hide themselves without such help (take - 10 or roll). Those who are buried are considered to be in an ‘obstacle’ so their first 5’ of movement will cost quadruple rather than double as they break free of their hiding places.

You know an awful lot about how crime lords think, Saul. If your position is stronger in the community, why aren't you taking full advantage of that to protect yourself further? And why on earth would they drag a dwarf, kicking and screaming, into the swamp? Have you already heard from them about Larur? Did they already threaten you with his capture?

Saul wrote:

Yes, your enemies are going to be quite forthcoming with their plans to overthrow you. Your justice and Kaylayne's are very similar, I'd gather.

Lief listens, a growing disappointment in his associates for opening their mouths so wide an anchor could hook them. Why so eager to jump at this nefarious activity? Ederin and Kaylayne, I can understand, but the dancer and the barman?

The young man gathers his items, several formalae prepped for conflict this day, as well as his newest alchemical creation. He tucks his sap on, and keeps his hand crossbow at the ready. He pointed at each of us. We're marked. These folk are something to someone, so they are to me. I'll not let them go off to their deaths with lesser numbers, at the least.

"Yes, Saul. Since we're heading out early, we'll take all the muscle you can afford. What, with your business life on the line, I'm surprised you didn't offer it at the beginning. I'd like you to tell them there will be no killing. Arm them only with saps."

Once ready, keeps his hands well tucked behind his back as Saul shakes everyone else's hands. He smiles civilly at the man as he passes, following the others out the door.

On the way to the Spar, Lief launches into a flurry of questions at his crew.

"So, what exactly does 'thwarting' look like, in your minds? Are you at all interested in listening to this cabal, before announcing yourselves? Saul warms to the idea.

"He'll follow your orders of course. He won't attack, unless defending himself of course, without your say so."

Once there he offers to bury the rest, both confident in his ability to remain unseen and uncomfortable with the idea of being closed in. When done he'll take some time and make sure he's as hidden as can be.

Once situated he keeps his eye out for anyone approaching his buried friends.

Ederin:
"As you wish - he will be there.", Saul smiles.

Also, don't forget to move your icon into position on the map.

As you sit, kneel and stand in squelching mud and water up over the edges of your boots, you wonder what you’re doing here for Saul. He seems a decent employer, though some of you have some doubts of late. The real question is - can you trust him? Or has he slipped into his old ways with the pressure on his casino? Hard to know for sure, but the pay is steady at least, and lucrative.

The minutes drag out to an hour and then two before even the most perceptive of you hear a slight splash to the south - larger than a rat this time for sure…

It’s very early - about an hour prior to dusk. Surprise round for you all. Don’t worry about initiative just yet, one standard action each please.

Lief looks at Ederin, and nods as he states his view. "So Saul can learn about a secret meeting targeting him specifically, and comes up with nothing regarding his man, Larur, being targeted? That's interesting to think on." So Lief spends time thinking on it.

Lief recognizes some sort of button being pushed on Ederin. He marks Ederin for a more thorough conversation, when time allows.

Nothing is worth this, Garridan thinks as the sweat pours off him in his muck covered hiding spot. I don't know what is worse the heat, the bugs, or the stench. If this goes on for much longer I just might let Zincher's men kill me and put me out of my misery, he laments to himself. He just finishes the thought when he hears a noise to the south. Whats that, he asks himself and begins to say a prayer.

Readied Action:
Garridan will ready a blessing: Agile Feet. It is a swift action that allows him to ignore difficult terrain for a round. He will use this if he or one of his companions are attacked.

Kaylayne listens and tries not to move. She's hunted before and so waiting for prey was nothing new to her. Usually her waiting didn't involve swamps and muck, however, and she wasn't enjoying the experience.

For the first time, she regrets her decision to work for Saul.

A lone figure splashes, eventually, into view as the party remains in hiding. His bow out, he seems to be looking for something in the swamp, but he does not see anyone in the party apparently.

He is short for an elf, wears leather armor and, as mentioned, carries a bow at the ready. He also has a long sword, dagger and a few other odds an ends. His two quivers mark him as an archer though. More than that is hard to make out through the vegetation you're hiding within.

He hisses, like a stage whisper, both trying to keep his voice down and trying to announce himself.

Perception DC 10 (remember -1 per 10' from the target):
"Lieutenants of Saul - you are in danger, come out at once! We should leave this place before the others arrive."

He stops, looks over his shoulder to the south, and listens a long moment.

If anyone attacks, we'll trigger initiative, otherwise keep your actions to ~one round at a time for now.

As this is an hour before the scheduled meeting, I don't think you have your prepared spells in place quite yet. So Kaylayne doesn't have any magic stones and Lief doesn't have heightened awareness up.

Both of you could certainly have cast those spells during the surprise round if you wished. Just let me know - otherwise I'll assume they are not yet used.

Lief:
You get a closer look, even without the bonus. The elf, unlike most of his ilk, is a little, well, ugly. His face is like that of a horse, long and mis-shapen on an elven head and one ear sticks out a little. You're pretty sure you've seen him before. Likely in the Gold Goblin - as a guest, not a guard or other employee.

Seeing that no one had betrayed their position, the bard decides to take one for the team. Besides, the muck is making his skin itch.

He leans in and barely whispers, "My name is Kwava, I'm an elf from the Shin’Rakorath - the Lanternbearers. I have many things to discuss with you, but first we should flee this place - there is a pack of wererats coming to kill you and your team. If your friends are already at other locations they may not be safe. Though I only know of an attack forming here, I believe Saul is out to kill you all."

He looks over his shoulder again, and listens to the wind in the trees. "Come, we should hurry."

Knowledge Local DC 20 (and assuming you can hear the conversation above):
The Shin’Rakorath, or Lanternbearers in the common tongue, are a somewhat secret elven organization. They describe their aim as “To be a light against the coming darkness” and they are known to be a force for good in the world among those who have heard of them at all.

I think you can keep a readied action - it's readied until it triggers or you, on your initiative, change it. That said, I think we're more or less out of combat so it would expire for that reason.

Too many things vie for his attention. Saul is trying to kill us? The elf is from the Lanterbearers? What the hell is a Lanterbearer? But the thing that stuck to him the most is the word rat or wererat in this case.

Euan, are you doing this on purpose? You should pick on someone else. :)

Dimitrio looks to the south following the elf's gaze. He's jittery, expecting rats or wererats to rise out of the swamp and swarm him. The thought of being overwhelmed by a swarm of rats distracts him.

"Listen...Kwava. I am here to listen in on a conversation about a friend of mine. Perhaps you know of him? The dwarf Larur is missing and Saul thinks that a meeting will be held here that will help reveal his whereabouts."

"What do you think Dimirtio, should we go back to his place or pick our own spot. Maybe the Lurch,eh? Go back where it all started?"

He looks at Dimitrio when the bard suggests staying for their original purpose.
