Resourcefullness and quick feet are really what make rogues good in this game, but any character, like Hermia mentioned, can try and think out of the box to solve a problem. If there was a trap or locked door, not many games give you zero ways around it. There's always a disarming switch or a key somewhere, Rogues in my mind just make it easier and a lot of people end up depending on them to do the quick-thinking.
I'm not trying to be a downer on any Rogue players in this party or people who look in on the game, I just have never had a good experiance with a Thief or Rogue in any gaming group i've had so far so I'm going to remain impartial again unless a vote is called for.
All Rogues I have played with are either vindictive, childish thieves whose only concern is taking all the loot and being a total female dog about their character when interacting with others, or wanna-be assassins whose only real part of the role-play is planning to kill all of the other party members. Also, if we ended up getting one of these types of Rogue Players with all of the Holy, Good-Aligned people, not to mention the honor-bound Paladin, friction is easily going to escalate into PVP, which is NEVER fun for anyone.
Case and Point, playing a Paladin in a homegame, alongside a Rogue who exhibits the exact definition of the first mentoned type of player. All she did was steal all the loot and refuse to share any of it with anyone, never contributed to combat or traps or anything, and made all these annoying insults about everyone else. My Paladin ended up trying to kill her, which pretty much made the entire gaming group break up.
Also, this list excludes Tam Hawke, the rogue in GM Aria's Kingmaker campaign, one cause he is my brother and I know he won't be a total @$$ about those things and is playing a really fun character, and two because he has been in every other gaming group with me alongside the annoying Rogues. my point is made, I remain impartial on the addition of a new Rogue, I merely ask that we SEVERELY look at any candidates' profiles to prevent certain incredibly annoying, bullcrap-making s!@# players from applying or being added into the group.
I mention no names.

Hermia Robin |

hahaha. i've had a good morning thus far. Azure-zero wrote this huge "i bow out of consideration of this recruitment because I can't play a drow noble ninja." *laughs*
Anyway. I've played only one rogue in Pathfinder, and that was in Serpent Skull AKA the hell of difficult terrain and 'why the h*ll would you even consider making a rogue?' She was from the Shackles. She was an assassin and a courier, but money meant jack and poo to her. What did mean something to her was stories about heroes.
She eventually went wizard/AT, because I wasn't having fun with her at all. She also slept with and ended up falling in love with the party paladin (of Irori, my husband's samurai flavored tian "Samuralidonk" with a 1 level of Zen archer for his switch hitty ness) and though she was CN was actually more "good" than most of the party in some instances.
But yeah. Really, rogues are the weakest class in PF and as I said, if we don't have one, it's on the GM to accommodate, as well as players not acting like morons. Traps should not one-shot a party member and if there aren't keys to the chest, hopefully it should be moveable to bring it back to the village black/locksmith.
I don't really think we need another party member, and I hate sorting through stuff for recruitment. When I read some histories, it makes me rage at what sort of player came up with such garbage (note above). Coz I have very high standards for players, which is why I did not call recruitment for my KM game and had a 3 page prompt for character creation. My CC game basically fell into my lap, so... I'm doing my best with it.

Gaeron Abraxus |

Roflmao omg what thread is that on Hermia? I could use a pick-me-up like that this morning :)? I also would like to add in that I still really appreciate you letting me into your KM game, I am having so much fun in it ^^ High standards for a DM rules out characters that were only made to break the system, try and be the oddball of the party so they get more attention, or, as I have seen most prevelent, an obviously guy player who makes all "vuluptuous, amazon-athletic, drop-dead beautiful women who claim to be the reincarnation of a god and thus demands 6 different sorcerer bloodlines for one level of Sorcerer"
I am not mentioning any names here again, but it just makes me laugh whenever people like that submit a character they pulled out of their rear and expect a GM to let them basically run the game through their broken character.
Again, I love that you have high standards Hermia, it makes the game fun and keeps the party to realistic and diverse characters with actually compelling backstories :)

Hermia Robin |

His retraction. You can scroll up to see his ridiculous "concept" which was not even, just a bid to make a drow noble ninja. He also tried to sell the GM on his bullcrap paragon system for ruining characters, which the GM very politely said "no" to... man... that guy just ruins recruitment threads.

Devin Cross |

As someone who usually plays a rogue, I completely agree with Gareon and Hermia. Most thieves really fit those descriptions. I hope, someday, to get to play my rogue with some of you to show that it doesn't have to be that way. I think you all would like him, at least more than Devin (who is, admittedly, an ass). Phagin, who is currently up on the boards but not in a game, is a CG burglar/con man turned courier. I play him as a face and bit of a swashbuckler. If you all know about any other games that open up and need a non-crappy rogue, please let me know.
As for this group, I agree that we don't need a Rogue but since the question was asked I wanted to bring it up as something that we don't have. As for adding any other players, I agree that we need a very high standard. I don't want any competition in upsetting the entire party. ;)

Gaeron Abraxus |

I look forwards to that Devin :) When I'm writing a story, I always like to have a Rogueish person in the party to balance the hard@$$ warriors, the pious priests, the rough barbarians and the...something mages.
Really when it comes to the addition of new players, it really is all up to the GM, but I know from experiance that he sets his standards pretty high when it comes to choosing characters.
Anyways, if we ever decide if we really need to try and add someone else, we can just leave it up to the GM to sort out the rabble from the roster, including certain unnamed players *cough*
:) anyways looking forwards to seeing how this mystery plays out. If we had a druid in the party though, I might shoot myself for the similarities to a popular cartoon show. XD

Hermia Robin |

I'm still here. Had a bit of a crisis at home with my mother undergoing emergency surgery, but I've been following things.
Edit
I think today is the day the GM and his brother, Gaeron's player do their RL Kingmaker game (I GM them in my PbP) so that could account for the quiet.

Hermia Robin |

Indeed. I am enjoying running my Hermia in a group that actually appreciates her and not one that cannot act like a group to save their freaking lives.
In her previous group, the CHA 19 sorc had a "complex" from being bullied when he was younger, which was just plain bullcrap in my opinion. With Charisma 19 you have a force of will that is greater than most beings that have ever existed on the planet. You're the fantasy equivalent of Napoleon with freaking super powers! Bullied as a kid and angry that he's a bastard. Riiight.
I had to teach the player OOC that there's a difference between being a leader and being a tyrant. He refused to give orders or even ask people to do stuff because he didn't want to seem tyrannical.
Idiots, all.

Kynneth |

LOL...well it is good to have someone like you playing!! Rightnow in another game, I think the DM is mad at us, so he is throwing tons of monsters at us to kill us off...somehow they surrounded us and escape and surrender are not an option...those are his words....yikes!! lol

Hermia Robin |

Bad GMing was another part of the reason I left that game. My character died and he came up with a way for her to come back - but instead of bestowing a negative level which could be restored when we got the funds to buy a scroll, he forced a level of Oracle on her. Oh, and then, the greatest part, he also tainted her with the power of Zon Kuthon so she became a beacon for every evil monster in the area.
This was his idea of good writing.
He also had pet players who couldn't role play their way out of a wet paper bag, refused to learn what their spells did or help the party in any way if it didn't fit with their vision of their concept, using their backstory as a crutch.
Example, we were at Oleg's and there were a bazillion soldiers around that were assigned there by a foreign power. My cleric says "hey, these guys are a part of our community, we should make them feel welcome." Druid said "NO, THEY'LL TRY TO RAPE ME! YOU CAN'T MAKE ME DO ANYTHING I DON'T WANT TO DO!!"
Next night, there's some new male NPCs, she starts rubbing her ass up against them like a cat in heat, because they are named NPCs.

Kynneth |

Wow...your druid scares me...why would she think they would even be interested in her...sheez...
Well I am enjoying the way you are playing Hermia...more role playing then roll playing...and I like the 'conflict' that is developing. Not too sure how Kynneth will respond...this whole adventure is mostly an experiment to him...and his budding relation with Hermia has thrown him for a loop..lol

Gaeron Abraxus |

Holy cow...And I thought Raventhorn and I had it rough with stupid gaming groups. I tip my hat to you Hermia. Yeah today was super busy but GM should have a post up soon, or so he said earlier on. I am really enjoying this group ^^ although it helps in the fact to cheer me up at times that this was one of the games that I got to see a certain player's ridiculous character concept get booted. Anyone who goes back and reads it will immediately know who i'm talking about, making up their own stuff to try and make their character seem more bad@$$ by pulling stuff out their rear on why their fighting style is the most perfect one and why everyone should bow down to it XD makes me smile every time.

Hermia Robin |

Oh man. I just completely ignore people who make ridiculous concepts. As he completely ignored my comment that his style was hard to read and completely incongruous with all other posts.
But yeah. I was looking forward to revealing that Hermia is in fact a drow noble ninja. *laughs*
Actually, I'm kinda wondering how her fey heritage is going to fit into the game, other than her... passion.

Devin Cross |

OK, so I've decided to start running my own PbP game. I really enjoy this group and I wanted to invite you to play first before I open a general recruitment thread. I'm also hoping to get some feedback on the idea also before I put up my come one, come all post. I hope you have room for another game, because I would really like all of you to play in this if you can. This is a plot that I ran before back in the 2nd ed AD&D days. I have been updating it for PF and Golarion. It fit amazingly well into Taldor and it's politics.
=== Here is my recruitment thread post ===
A Tale of Taldor - Golarion PbP Campaign
Some may dream of riding the open plain or delving an abandoned dungeon, yet others may yearn for grand battles or conquering an undefeated foe, this is not their story. This is a tale of lies and betrayal, of the insidious and the plotting, of conquest by deception. This is a tale of dueling nobles and waring guilds, of crossed interests and double crossing debutantes. This is a Tale of Taldor, a story of mystery and intrigue.
Game Overview: This will be a role-play heavy game with lots of politics and character development. The setting is the political and social catacombs of Taldoran society. While there will be some combat, it may be few and far between. It's possible that the party could go an entire level without a fight. While the party may venture into an ancient forest or explore a dank catacomb, it will be for political or social purpose, not just to plunder. I want to make this clear up front in order to correctly set expectations. Anyone bringing a half-orc barbarian looking to break heads may end up disappointed. However if you have ever wanted to engage in economic guild warfare, manipulate feuding noble families, or explore the mysteries of Taldor zoning permits, this is the game for you.
Character Creation: The only 2 requirements are the characters must be of Good alignment and must not be from Taldor. Other than that it's a fairly standard 20 pt buy with 2 traits and anything from Core and the APG allowed. I will say that the core classes are recommended, better a party of Mages and Clerics than Alchemists and Oracles.
The Setup: Each perspective party member will receive a letter from a Taldan noble who is an acquaintance of a parent or mentor. It asks them to travel to Almas where they will board a ship for Taldor to meet the noble and discuss a job offer. The party will initially meet on or before the ship, then they will be able to RP on the voyage before arriving and meeting their new benefactor. At which point the actual game would begin.
Please post your characters or any questions you may have. After we have enough players I will introduce the setting at the harbor and post the text of the letter.
Thank you and welcome to A Tale of Taldor.
=== End Post ===
Yes, I did shamefully steal the boat idea from our wagon ride, it worked out so well I couldn't help it.
First, who's up for the game?
Second, do you have any suggestions or comments on the game concept or my proposed post? I would love to hear your feedback before posting this to a Recruitment thread.
I plan on having a party of 5 or 6, so if all of you are available then we may only need to recruit 2 more. If you all have any suggestions of players you know are good, please let me know or direct them to the thread when I start it.
Thanks for the feedback and thanks to GMRavethorn for letting me hijack this thread for a bit.

Hermia Robin |

Oh man, a Taldor game? I ran one for my husband. His magus wanted to be the new emperor of Taldor, and then conquer its old provinces and take some new stuff, too. Like Qadira :P
So... Highly political? Check! Ulfen Guard? Check!
Wanna see the goody two shoes cleric run a bard? Hahahaha! My absolute favorite class in the game!

GM Raventhorn |

@ Hermia I have been waiting to see a bard from you since we met lol will look forward to see what you come up with haha
Couple of questions but man that sounds interesting !!! so many char ideas running through head now lol
but how does the good alignment come into play if it is highly political? obviously I just ask cause usually politics run into very dirty undertakings
also what is your take of archtypes for the core and APG classes?
Anyways I Love politics ever heard of the series from CJ Cheryh Foreigners? anyways whole book is about politics and intrigue up till last 50 pages and there's quick fight addicting lol
Anyways yeah will but some ideas together and submit in a few
ug almost envisioning Roman ideas almost want to take the minus ad be a fighter like Julius Caesar dunno maybe not lol

Hermia Robin |

I believe when Devin says "Good Aligned" he means that if you have to do dirty stuff, you do it with the intent of prevailing in the end.
Good does not equal nice. Good people don't allow evil people to continue to exist and corrupt the lands when they discover a cabal of necromancers intent on destroying some segment of society, even if that cabal is tied to the King's personal adviser. So the good character will perhaps forestall the king's adviser with a seduction, or a project that goes no where while the group goes and slaughters the necromancers, then expose the adviser for being a piece of filth with the evidence collected against him. And if any move to defend that adviser, start making plans to take them out as well.

Devin Cross |

Ok, glad to see everyone is excited. So first some answers.
Hermia and Kynneth: A Bard and A Rogue would be awesome.
Raventhorn:
Yes to everything Hermia said about Good alignment. I've always explained it as Good vs Evil alignments is really Selfless vs Selfish. I hope that the alignments will help with some party unity. It's supposed to be the party vs the machinations of the other political interests. I want to minimize, knowing I can't really eliminate, any individual political wars within the party. I think there will be enough tension between how a LG and a CG will want to do things without introducing any CN or LE into the mix. There are also other 'in game' reasons for the restriction, but I don't want to give away too much.
As for archetypes, I think they are awesome but choose wisely. I could even see some of them fitting especially well, and some being really out of place.
As to playing a fighter, there is no inherent 'minus' in that. I could see, going back to the archetypes, a Mobile Fighter played as a swashbuckler being very effective. I just wanted to make clear up front that it's as likely that you will need to infiltrate a masked ball as it is that you will battle a thieves guild.
It's perfect that you bring up Roman ideas, this game was originally set in Mystara (the original DnD game world before Grayhawk) in a country called Karameikos, half of who's population came from a Roman style empire (called Traldar, humm). The country itself was much like Andoran but the political situation was closer to Taldor. When I started reading about Golarion and Taldor I realized that the same plot would fit right into place in this empire.
Second, some more clarification. I need to rewrite my intro a bit, to make clear that this is still an Adventuring party. There will still be some 'traditional' adventuring to do. There will also, especially in the beginning, be some very non-traditional things you will be tasked with. I don't want anyone to think there is a negative to playing a fighter, just be prepared up front for not doing a lot of strait up fighting.
As for characters, start getting them ready but you don't have to post them here. I just want to give you a head start. After everyone here says they have a character ready, just tell me who they are. Then I'll post the recruitment tread and we can move the conversation over there.
What other feedback or questions do you all have?
Thanks for all the help and enthusiasm. I was hesitant to propose a political style game, not knowing if anyone else likes playing in them.

Umm, question would be how prevalent is racism going to be in your game? Because Taldorians are pretty known for their hatred of Qadirans. I ask because my character is going to be an Osirani lady, and I'm thinking her cover story for why she would be in Taldor would be to join an opera/acting troupe, but if she wouldn't be able to find a job...
Also, I'm going kind of Wizard-lite with my bard. Rich parents is not going to be used to stock up on magical items at first level, rather to have all the trappings of being a person used to a particular lifestyle.
Having both the Taldor book and the Osirion books, I think I can come up with something pretty cool.

Devin Cross |

Hermia: Looks great. Osirani should be fine. While there will be some racial overtones as long as you don't look Qadiran or start preaching the Dawnflower you should be fine. As for a cover story, you don't need to worry about it. Your reason for being there is receiving a letter through a parent or mentor that you trust. You can be starting from Osirion or anywhere else you want, just get your background up to receiving the letter and heading for Almas to catch the ship. Something else i need to clarify in my intro, obviously.

Devin Cross |

Both would be great. Just make sure you think about how a 'roman style' fighter would act when negotiating a shipping contract. Or how falconer will take it when his bird is denied entry into a dinner party, or worse, becomes the center of attention with all the noble women wanting to 'pet the pretty bird'.
Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hermia Robin |

I'll start working on my crunch shortly, and have a basic concept/history up when you open your recruitment thread so it doesn't seem "off." I will work longer on the fluff to come up with a strong character, probably based on several sources.
In my experience, in political games you should have a real sense of what your character will and will not do to advance their personal ambitions, or in response to challenges, so I might take some time with the fluff.

GM Raventhorn |

decided just to combine the both ideas and just be a ranger falconer oh and to answer the question devin the bird can roam up to a week by itself without penalty so hed be fine without it its actually a part but not a main part of the classes abilities.
But hey ladies attentions is always pleasing ;) *ding*

Devin Cross |

Raventhorn: I wasn't really worried about the bird, I was thinking about the exchange between a snooty doorman and a perturbed falconer.
"But your... bird simply can not be allowed to come in."
"But my bird simply must come in."
"But he can't come in!"
"But he must come in!"
Ah, good times.
Hermia: That's fine, I'm sure it will create all kinds of interesting situations ;)

Bardic Knowledge (Ex) A bard adds half his class level (minimum 1) to all Knowledge skill checks and may make all Knowledge skill checks untrained
Bardic Performance A bard is trained to use his Perform skill to create magical effects on those around him, including himself if desired. He can uses this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to 4+his Charisma modifier. At each level after 1st a bard can use bardic performance for 2 additional rounds per day. Each round the bard can produce any one of the types of bardic performance that he has mastered, as indicated by his level.
Starting a bardic performance is a standard action, but it can be maintained each round as a free action.
Each bardic performance has audible components, visual components, or both.
Cantrips (Sp) Bard's learn a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells, as noted on Table: Bard Spells Known under "Spells Known." These spells are cast like any other spell, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.
Countersong (Su) At 1st level, a bard learns to counter magic effects that depend on sound (but not spells that have verbal components.) Each round of the countersong he makes a Perform (keyboard, percussion, wind, string, or sing) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard's Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard's Perform skill check result for the save. Countersong does not work on effects that don't allow saves. Countersong relies on audible components.
Distraction (Su) At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to counter magic effects that depend on sight. Each round of the distraction, he makes a Perform (act, comedy, dance, or oratory) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by an illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack may use the bard’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the distraction is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it sees the distraction, but it must use the bard’s Perform check result for the save. Distraction does not work on effects that don’t allow saves. Distraction relies on visual components.
Fascinate (Su) At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and capable of paying attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creatures affected. The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working. For every three levels a bard has attained beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with this ability.
Each creature within range receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the bard’s level + the bard’s Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and observes the performance for as long as the bard continues to maintain it. While fascinated, a target takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat to the target allows the target to make a new saving throw against the effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect.
Fascinate is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting ability. Fascinate relies on audible and visual components in order to function.
Inspire Courage (Su) A 1st level bard can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard’s performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The bard must choose which component to use when starting his performance.
SPELLS KNOWN

1st (2/day) Sleep (DC 16), Timely Inspiration
0 (unlimited) Detect Magic, Light, Message, Unwitting Ally (DC 15)
Made a bard recently with mostly the same stats. Don't know how you feel about dumping stats, but if I could, I would drop Strength two points to get some Con or Wis.

Haha yes this shall be fun lol

Hermia Robin |

Masterwork Backpack allows to carry up to +1 strength more than you have.
Bards don't actually need much.
But I suppose the main question is how much are we actually going to be out and about, and how much is going to be spent exploring a city, where presumably we could leave our heavier items behind, and/or not have them at all?

Gaeron Abraxus |

DING! Very interested, I'm gonna make two versions of the character I have in mind for you to consider Devin :) Either a Fighter or a Cavalier :) Either will be good in the political intrigue ^^ I may forgo the mercenary idea however, been using it a lot lately, I'll try and configure something else for the backstory :)
EDIT: You said no Half-Orc Barbarian and at first i had a sad ;) but I suppose a Human swordsman will do just as well ^^

Gaeron Abraxus |

Man I'm already excited! I'm just curious for feedback, for my Warrior, should I go two-handed, sword and board, dual wielding, or something else :) I'm really feeling a two-handed but advice, comments?

Favored Class Bonus- 1st Level Skill point
Feathered Companion (Ex): At 1st level, a falconer earns the trust and companionship of a bird of prey. The bird can be of
any type of large hunting or scavenging bird (even a vulture).
This ability functions like the druid animal companion ability (which is part of the nature bond class feature), but the falconer must take the bird animal companion, and that companion has only half the normal hit points. The falconer cannot teach the bird of prey the work trick, but can teach it either the roam or distract trick for free. Whichever trick the falconer does not pick then can be picked as a trick later.
Roam (DC 15): The falconer can let his animal companion loose to roam and forage. He must let it roam for no more than a week. When the falconer lets it roam, it agrees to return to the place he let it loose within the time period he designates.
Distract (DC 20; bird only): The animal companion flutters wildly around any enemy it would normally attack with the attack trick. It makes an attack roll against that enemy. On a hit, the enemy is shaken.
This ability replaces wild empathy.
All of the following are class features of the ranger.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A ranger is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields).
Favored Enemy (Ex): At 1st level, a ranger selects a creature type from the ranger favored enemies table. He gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon
attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify these creatures.
At 5th level and every five levels thereafter (10th, 15th, and 20th level), the ranger may select an additional favored enemy. In addition, at each such interval, the bonus against any one favored enemy (including the one just selected, if so desired) increases by +2.
If the ranger chooses humanoids or outsiders as a favored enemy, he must also choose an associated subtype, as indicated on the table below. (Note that there are other types of humanoid to choose from in the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary—those called out specifically on the table below are merely the most common.) If a specific creature falls into more than one category of favored enemy, the ranger’s bonuses do not stack; he simply uses whichever bonus is higher.
Chosen Favored Enemey: Humanoid-Human

Survival skill checks made to follow or identify tracks.
