BACKGROUND
Devin grew up in a affluent household in Abecheim, his father was a banker and his mother a local socialite. His father was always in the good graces of each new "King" as they would need to borrow money to pay for their fledgling monarchy. As he grew up, raised by a series of nannies and tutors, he developed a love for playing cards. Specifically for the psychology of playing against the other people. He gained a reputation at a young age for being a frequent patron of the gaming houses in Abecheim and for winning often. He always approached gambling as a test of skill avoiding dice and any other "games of chance".
Unfortunately being that good at a young age also makes for many enemies. He had to survive many occasions of being accused of cheating, something he abhors. This usually ended in fighting for his life, which he was also found to be good at. Several fights ended with his hands covered in the blood of a lesser card player. This reputation caught the interest of some of the local thieves guilds.
Devin's gambling and street fighting had him thrown out of his parents house and disowned to avoid bringing scandal on the family. He changed his name and started playing cards full time. After a bad streak of losses he was approached by a local gang leader with an offer to wipe out his dept if he would preform a "job" for him. This job involved removing the leader of a rival group trying to gain influence in his new employer's neighborhood. He was approached because the rival would be at a private card game in a few days time that Devin was also to attend. Once the job was completed he was offered more work, enough to keep up his gambling win or lose.
He never specialized in subtlety or misdirection of proper Assassins. The jobs he took usually required that a message be sent, clearly and often publicly. It was almost always rival gangs or corrupt guilds taking out the others more untouchable members. He used his knowledge of both the city and human nature to find his targets in compromised situations. His favorite weapon became the crossbow. Many aspiring gang bosses were found in back alleys with multiple bolts adorning them.
After three years of "work" and dozens of targets eliminated, the local law and other gangs were tired of his efficiency. They decided that he needed to be the target this time. He barely escaped several attempts, finally deciding that his "work" would cost him his life if he didn't abandon it. He refused any new jobs that were offered him, making his regular employers unhappy as well. After taking a couple of jobs offering protection from the unseemly ends he used to inflict, he soon realized that he wouldn't be able to stay in Abecheim.
He had heard that the unfortunate Village of Grunshire was hiring mercenaries to defend it from an unknown assailant. He decided that this must be safer for him than his current situation and packed a meager set of provisions and charted passage on a trade caravan to Grunshire. Hoping to find "honest work", a new future, and maybe game of cards.
