Nighttail twists her head towards the half-orc. "Quite necessary. At least you know I'm willing to act. Quickest way to cut him off should be straight ahead."

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"The creature was helpless Stone. If life needs to be taken it needs to be done swift and clean. Let's move forward."

Avoiding steeping or looking at the torn up body more than needed he takes the middle tunnel.
"This way, right?"

Double move action.

Human Cleric of Ragathiel, 3 NG, HP 27/27, AC 20, touch 12, flat-footed 18, Init +2, Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +5, Perception +7, Sense Motive +7

”Heh, as helpless as a beautiful woman at court.”

”I thought that death was pretty quick actually. Stab, bite, snap, dead. . . I suppose if we constructed a guillotine it could have been a second more rapid. . . Less efficient, but more rapid.”

”But, yes let’s move on. Vengeance has been served.”

Stone, unimpassioned, follows behind the inquisitor.

Sheaorlis runs through the small cave to the south, which contains nothing but a single small pallet heaped with furs that sits against the south wall. The inquisitor rushes through the small room, but right as Stone and Nighttail enter, you realize that the heap of furs is actually an aged kobold, with a patched fur blanket. Clutched in his hands is a tiny box with a leather cord. A Phylactery of Faithfulness. His eyelids flutter open as Stone and Nighttail enter the room to reveal milky, blind orbs. In a raspy voice, he calls out in common,

"I can tell by your scent that you are strangers here. If my nose tells the truth, you bring the destruction I foretold. Good... good. I had hoped to see our ruin before journeying to the afterworld, but I will settle for listening to it. Beware the great scaly beast, strangers. He seems to speak reason, but his words are poison. And his bats, the ones he called from the darkness ... they are harbingers of lunacy and chaos ... Dread Lord Aeteperax will surely be your doom as he has been ours."

As if the very act of speaking was too much for him, having given this cryptic and ominous message, the venerable kobold dies.

Sheaorlis, you hear the out of breath kobold fiddling with something not far away. A loud ch-tock! reverberates off the hard walls.

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

In his pursuit the half-orc pauses only for a second to hear the words of the older kobold. Looking behind him to assure that it doesn't pose any threat he mutters with contempt. "Ones that rely on such tools have cast off their faith in the deities. You mention large scaly beasts, bats and chaos but it was you who have embraced them. Your greed... and... What was that?"

The half-orc's ears twitch as he hears sounds not far away. They seemed so familiar yet he could not associate them in his haste to anything.

Not even bothering to spare a second glance at the now dying kobold he charges the kobold with his axe flailing sideways as much as the space permitted.

Knowledge nature about Aeteperax: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 +1 from Stone, though I don't know if it still applies now
Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 - 2 = 7
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Sheaorlis, distracted by his thoughts, swings his axe and hits nothing but air.

I'm deciding that the kobold didn't realize Sheaorlis was right there, making his attack part of a Surprise round.

Kn (Nature) DC 10:

These filthy rats are the size of small dogs. They have a coat of coarse fur, long and scabby tails, and two glittering eyes. They often carry diseases.

DC 15:
Specifically, they can infect others with a disease called Filth Fever, transmitted through their bite. The disease can take several days to show itself, though.

Initiative:

Initiative Rats: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Initiative Hak: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Initiative Kobold: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

The gates behind the kobold burst open as three rodents the size of small dogs scurry out! Piles of moldy straw fly out with them, as the small three-foot-high cave was packed floor-to-ceiling with it.
One attacks the kobold, one attacks the half-orc, and the third tries to scurry past them all!

(black) Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
The half-orc's feet are a bit too quick for the rat to snag a bite

(red) Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Perhaps disoriented from the sudden change in space, the rat attacking the reptile misses as well.

The last one rushes out past everyone, bounds off the opposite wall, and bites at Sheaorlis!

(Sheaorlis, you're not flat-footed, so you can make an AoO on either the black rat, or white rat, or neither! You're choice!)

Stone:
You're not sure of the name Aeteperax. But, for some reason, you feel like you might have heard it or come across it before in your studies. All you can grasp at is that you think it has something to do with Belhaim's history... Or the beginning of Belhaim's history...

The black rat growls and collapses.

The inquisitor then swings at the white albino looking rat, but can't seem connect.

She turns around and heads back up to the small room where the dead high priest lies.

You hear a violent sound and a gruesome squish, and Nighttail returns calmly.

"Sorry, there was another kobold. Must've come from above. Anyway, the next drop down is just around the bend there. Mind your step."

The cleric takes a quick look around and examines the magical item worn by the former spiritual leader in the bed.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

The only thing of interest is what the blind kobold was holding in his hands, a Phylactery of Faithfulness. It's usually worn around the forehead but, in his condition, blind and waiting to die, he held it tightly to himself, as if holding his very faith.

"Yes, his name was Jakkol. The used to be the tribe's priest. Though a visitor of his decided she'd be our new priest, when she learned Jakkol was near death. All she does is try to convince everyone to return to the worship of Vapula. Pfft! No thanks! Alright, y'all know the drill. I guard the caboose."

Nighttail gestures and waits for someone to head into the narrow tunnel.

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"I guess it could be valuable to someone in the town. Maybe a novice would feel more at ease using it, though it would probably help him more if we leave it here in the caves."

Sheaorlis said showing no more love towards the object then when he saw it the first time.
"So, you've also had a change of religions in the tribe? This is what happens when people don't stick to the good old paved path, chaos, killings and misery. One's not satisfied with his condition and desires more."

Casting a spell on himself he slowly descends into the third level of the cave complex.

”Yes. Who was your patron deity?”

The cleric takes the Phylactery of Faithfulness and places it in his pack.

Sheaorlis begins making his way through the tunnel, followed by Nighttail and Hak, with Stone bringing up the rear. The ceiling of this chamber rises to a lofty twelve feet. The cave floor drops away into a pair of long, 10ft deep pits. Between them, a ridge of stone forms a dubious walkway to a landing on the opposite side, where a 5ft wide shaft with a knotted rope hanging down into it awaits. The floor of this cave slopes upward at the elbow of the path, so that the eastern wall of the eastern pit rises higher than its western wall.
Climbing into or out of the pits is DC15 check.

"My patron diety? Sorry, I ain't much into the whole "faith" thing. Jakkol led the tribe in the worship of the uh...oh what's he called? The "infernal duke"? Vapula, that's it. And Churgri is on her own personal mission to sway the cold-blooded hearts of us all to return to that faith; with little to no success, I might add."

Looking at the wall, you see several gaps in the rock, concealing a tunnel with an unknown number of kobolds. And now, they're using you for target practice!

Bold can act!

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"Not into the faith thing?! I'll let you know, the reason why you're still not tied there is because of it, that, and the fact that you know you're way around. Watch out Nighttail!"

The half-orc narrowly avoids a stone thrown from above and shrugs off another one which seems to have hit him.

"We're outnumbered, put into a tight spot and could get very messy if the alarm is raised yet I have no doubt we would prevail. You know why? Faith. Have a small dose of it:"
The inquisitor extracts a parchment from a sack throwing it above the kobold's head as he recites an incantation.

Casting Shield of Faith on Nighttail.
"Stone, though I sense yours is strong I say you can never have enough. You're next, but first, let me show these clowns we are not messing around." Leaving the axe propped to the cavern wall he draws the longbow.

Human Cleric of Ragathiel, 3 NG, HP 27/27, AC 20, touch 12, flat-footed 18, Init +2, Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +5, Perception +7, Sense Motive +7

”No, I meant who was the tribe worshipping? You made it sound like Jakkol and the tribe were giving tribute to another god when you say that Churgri was trying to get them to go back to worshipping Vapula.”

Rocks begin pelting the cleric.

”Ouch! Damn! Freaking overgrown Jermaline!”

Sheaorlis, where you are, there is no "wall." Just pits on either side of you, and kobolds inside the rock on the far side of the eastern pit, slinging stones through holes in the rock. So your axe lies on the floor. (Sorry, I'm feeling a bit snarky and silly today ^_^)

The kobolds continue their onslaught, hoping for slightly better accuracy. From the opening furthest to the right (south), a projectile comes flying at the Cleric's face!

Red Sling (vs Stone): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

But a quick duck of the head suffices to dodge the rock.
From the same opening in the rock, another stone is slung at Stone!
Red and Purple each make a move action to swap places. Then Purple attacks!

Purple Sling (vs Stone): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

This one is closer, but still not really a threat to nimble human.

Nighttail can't stifle her laughter as she calls out, "Claire, ya never said you was such a good dancer!"

Her laughter cuts off as two stones fly toward her!

Orange Sling vs Nighttail: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Yellow Sling vs Nighttail: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
The second one looked like it was coming right for her but, thanks to the shield the half-orc provided, somehow powered by faith, no harm is done.

And, to complete the ensemble, Sheaorlis also tries to dodge to oncoming rocks.

Green Sling vs Sheaorlis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Blue Sling vs Sheaorlis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

One hits his knee, though not very hard. And the other doesn't even make the distance. It tumbles down into the eastern pit below.

Human Cleric of Ragathiel, 3 NG, HP 27/27, AC 20, touch 12, flat-footed 18, Init +2, Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +5, Perception +7, Sense Motive +7

Seeing that the multiple attackers are well shielded in their positions, the cleric moves forward as far as he can in the current marching order. He selects out his fellow allies and channels Ragathiel’s Wrath of Vengeance.

”Behold!”

Stone thrusts his arm out making Jakkol’s Phylactery of Faithfulness displayed clearly!

A wave of destructive energy radiates outward in 30 feet all around the Cleric known as Stone. The flash of red tinted force passes around the party members and burn into their living foes!

Channeled Wrath: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

That was a little anti-climatic damage-wise.

”Tell them the ruin foretold by Jakkol has come! They will continue to feel the anger of Jakkol’s spirit if they oppose you and his teachings!”

”Tell them if they throw down their arms, turn away or attack you no further the burning will cease!”

”Tell them you are the path to the tribes salvation and Jakkol’s spirit set you free to save them!”

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"That would give them something to think about. Stone, what do you say, should we teach them how to use range weapons or make run for it?"

DC12 save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16 successful save for 1/2 damage. Each kobold takes 1pt of damage.

Nighttail is taken aback somewhat by Claire's unexpected shouting; partly because his shouting would surely carry down to the lower level, forfeiting any element of surprise they might could have had... but also because his the story he had so quickly spun was exciting enough that she nearly believed it herself.

She bellows towards the kobolds that can barely be seen:

Draconic:

The ruin foretold by Jakkol has come! You will continue to feel the anger of Jakkol’s spirit if you oppose me! If you throw down your arms, turn away or attack us no further, the burning will cease! I, Nighttail am the path to the tribe's salvation! It wasJakkol’s spirit that set me free, so that I might save you!

Also, if you continue to resist, when this is all over, Hak will eat each of your faces!

Nighttail's last word lingers on the stuffy air. An eerie silence follows. No kobolds are visable through the holes in the rock, nor are any more stones being slung your way.

What do you do?

The cleric asks ready to move to the next objective!

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"We're not going to turn back just because the kobolds are acting weird. Let's keep going." The half-orc picks up the axe which he just dropped and climbs down the rope.

"Ston,e there will come a day when you will have to answer to the gods and the spirits of the dead on how you've used their memory."

Human Cleric of Ragathiel, 3 NG, HP 27/27, AC 20, touch 12, flat-footed 18, Init +2, Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +5, Perception +7, Sense Motive +7

”Heh! Well I do serve the god of Vengeance and Retribution, so I certainly hope you are right inquisitor. In the meantime it looks like he wishes me to survive long enough to accomplish something in his name.”

Sheaorlis climbs down the rope into the darkness, finding himself in an empty chamber. Soon thereafter, Stone joins him, the light from his holy symbol filling the room. There are two passages that exit to the north of this room, positioned on opposite walls.

Quicker than one might expect, Hak comes sliding through the hole with the rope between its teeth, fortunately the rope doesn't break, though it is frayed in places.

"I can't believe that worked..." Nighttail whispers.

In a very, very faint whisper, she informs you,

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

As the kobold warns about the dangers ahead Sheaorlis frowns and rips another parchment slowly as not to create too much noise and makes the same incantation as he used on Nighttail earlier. The half orc arms himself with the axe in preparation for the battle.

"I'll take the left path, you can take the other. Let's not give the cleric time to summon reinforcement. We can use that little toy of yours to see if he still believes in his ways after we're done with him."

The Cleric known as Stone nods at his companions and casts Bless.

He then tries to determine the nature of the wands they collected earlier.

”What were these wands again?”

"Cure Light Wounds and the other is a wand of Entangle. Y'know, I also got a potion of invisibility in that knapsack. We could use it to our advantage."

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"I've never been fond of those weapons." Sheaorlis remarks pausing for a second while remembering his past experiences with wands.

"But Nighttail might be right about the potion, one of us could get up close to deliver the first blow. Of course that person risks being overwhelmed by the undead. Another way would be to have one of us sneak behind him, wait until his minions have left his side and after the cleric is dealt with we could sandwich the remaining ones or attack them from behind if they retreat to protect their master. Human Cleric of Ragathiel, 3 NG, HP 27/27, AC 20, touch 12, flat-footed 18, Init +2, Fort +4, Ref +3, Will +5, Perception +7, Sense Motive +7

”I’ll keep the healing wand, Nighttail the entangling one, you take the invisibility and I can burst to soften the skeletons up and heal us up. Does that sound like a plan?”

”We can modify it, but I am ready to go when you are.”

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"Nighttail, I do hope the dose of the potion has been adjusted for someone having a strong build. The last thing we would want would be for it to only have partial effect."

With that said the half-orc takes the invisibility potion from the cleric drinks it all in one gulp, counts to five then checks how visible his extremities are. keeping both of his arms tight around the handle he props his weapon on his shoulder and moves through the tunnel. He makes a beeline towards the

Churgri does not notice

The ceiling at the center of this cave is twelve feet high. A crude idol stands in the middle of the cave, decorated with grisly strips of dried viscera. You see the kobold that can only be Churgri standing a few feet behind it, flanked by two skeletons. Churgri, you notice, is in a defensive stance; she is obviously aware that there are others, and that some sort of tussle was occurring in the above room.

To be clear, Nighttail did not communicate with her fellow kobold. Churgri, shouted out in draconic. Nighttail has not responded.

Sheaorlis:
It's clear from the kobold's quizzical look that she, in fact, doesn't know Common. She makes a gesture with her quarterstaff and the two human skeletons take on combat-ready stances. They are each wearing a mostly broken chain shirt that hangs off their bones, and they each hold a sword that's be broken off, leaving jagged ends.
