Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

It takes all of the half-orc's willpower to withhold his attack on the unsuspecting minion and choose to move slowly next to the cavern wall in order not to attract detection.

He prepares to sneak past the skeletons once they leave their defensive positions.

5-foot step, ready a move action to get behind Churgri as soon as the skeleton on the left wonders off.

Round 1
Sheaorlis // Churgri // Skeletons // Nighttail/Hak // Stone

Churgri's eyes narrow and she mutters something no one can quite understand. Before the inquisitor's invisible eyes, a shimmering sort of barrier surrounds the kobold.

Spellcraft DC 16:
You recognize the spell as Protection from Good, which gives Churgri a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus to Saving Throws against attacks made by, or effects created by, Good creatures.

Churgri immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over her(including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person). This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. The effects resume when the duration of this spell expires. While under the effects of this spell, Churgri is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over her. This only functions against spells and effects created by good creatures.

Round 1
Sheaorlis // Churgri // Skeletons // Nighttail/Hak // Stone

The skeleton on the left moves towards the tunnel on the left, where it then drops its broken sword and waits with its claws up.

As Nighttail and Hak reach the other end of the tunnel, the skeleton on the right reaches them, swinging its broken blade up at Nighttail

broken scimitar: 1d20 ⇒ 5
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

But it.... misses... because...reasons...

Round 1
Churgri // Skeletons // Sheaorlis // Nighttail/Hak // Stone

In response to the skeleton moving southward, the half-orc creeps around behind the kobold cleric. In fact, Sheaorlis doesn't make a sound!

GM rolls:

Stealth: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 20 = 25
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Round 1
Churgri // Skeletons // Sheaorlis // Nighttail/Hak // Stone

Nighttail returns the favor by thrusting her spear at the thing!
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 8 - 2 + 1 = 12
damage: 1d6 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 6 = 8

Unfortunately, her power thrust isn't powerful enough. It bounces right off a rib.

Hak quite enjoys gnawing on bones, so he's quite delighted! Delighted enough to bite and claw like an angry dog, except that dog is a small dinorsaur!
Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 1 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Claws 1: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Claws 2: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 = 11
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

And that small dinosaur isn't able to land a blow!

Bold may act!

”Remember friends! Our vengeance is righteous!” The cleric utters a rallying cry!

Knowing his blade might not be best against bones, instead he attempts to deliver a haymaker with his cestus clad fist!

(Since this only affects one creature, will this spell be targeted at Sheaorlis?)

Stone, the Cestus deals either Piercing or Bludgeoning damage, but not both. Since you did not specify, I'm going to roll for damage type, since it matters in this instance.
P(1-50) B(51-100): 1d100 ⇒ 3 (Piercing)

The cleric makes a wild swing with his cestus-clad fist, crashing through the skelton which promptly falls apart, clambers to the floor, and turns into dust!

Reacting quickly to the sight of a filthy human destroying one of her loaned skeletons, the priestess of Vapula begins to chant words you don't understand, snatching something from a small pouch which she crumbles in her hands as she waves her hand in an intricate pattern,

(thus provoking an AoO from Sheaorlis)

and thrusting the hand in the direction of the cleric known as Stone.

Will Stone: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 (vs DC14)

Stone, you suddenly find that your limbs have locked in place. In fact, your whole body immobilizes. You're paralyzed!

Spellcraft DC 17:
Churgri has cast Hold Person.

Obviously, that post is subject to change. If Sheaorlis makes an attack of opportunity, and lands a hit, it could disrupt Churgri's concentration, potentially wasting the spell. Also, Churgri would probably move if she realized someone was standing behind her. So, we'll see what happens.

Btw, y'all rock! As people and human beings! Hope your having a great start of the week!

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

The half-orc doesn't waste any second and as soon as he sees the kobold cleric preparing for another spell he gathers all his strength lets out a roar and delivers a powerful blow in the direction of the cleric.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

The dex bonus to AC should not apply since this was the first attack, however, I don't think this attack is going to make it because of the spell.

Not wanting to lose the initiative the inquisitor returns the swing this time from the other side with less force but with more precision.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Seeing that his brother in arms was hit by the spell the cleric just cast, he tries to recall information about the effects of that magic, and if the kobold falls to the ground dead he would attempt to help Nighttail finish the last skeleton.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Moving behind the skeleton if Churgri doesn't move, otherwise my move action is spent to get next to her.

All in all, not a bad turn.

Thanks GM! Though the week did not start out too well (just found out yesterday I only have one working kidney after 30 years and that I will need an operation to remove the dead one). But today was great, probably because it's my birthday!

@ the Inquisitor—Actually his attack is better than that. He has Bless and Inspiring Word.

Sorry to hear about your health stuff man. I got into PbP because I had my neck broken and was left partially paralyzed. I don’t have a table top group anymore, so these games are my escape and my refuge. My mind runs free! Keep your head up and keep us up on your health.

And happy birthday. Keep in mind any year this side of the dirt is a good one!

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

Thanks Stone for the encouragement and I'm really sad to hear about your condition. I hope you have fun playing with us and that we'll stumble upon the second group.

I have totally forgotten about Bless and was not sure about the target of Inspiring Word. The +2 Bonus from Inspiring Word definitely looks helpful, Unfortunately it doesn't stack with Bless since both provide Morale bonus.

In the few seconds it takes Churgri to cast her spell, Sheaorlis responds with his ax. Unfortunately the blow doesn't do anything, except give up his position. (edit: Churgri ends her turn by moving away from Sheaorlis. So, his move action on his turn is spent closing that distance).

The inquisitor's second attack connects in a painful way. Churgri is still standing, but seems hurt.

Nighttail remains consistent with her tactics, shoving her spear with both hands into her targets. In this instance, she attempts to drive it straight through the skull!

Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 6 = 12

The skull shatters and the entire skeleton turns to dust before your eyes!

Wasting no time, she directs Hak towards the reptilian cleric.
Emulating its master, Hak tries to pierce Churgri's skull, with her teeth!

Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5

But she's quicker than she looks, and dodges.

The inquisitor slashes at the evil cleric of Vapula, breaking through her Protection from Good... as well as breaking through her scales, her collar bone, many other bones. His face, armor, and ax are coated in it.

Nighttail's eyes narrow at Stone. She approaches him and, despite being much shorter, points a finger in his chest and accuses him fiercely

”Oh, sorry, um, I didn’t, I mean? There was no outward genitalia, well moving on shall we!?”

He calls back up to the voice.

”Ahem, well, we are fighting the Kobolds whom are fighting against the interest of her Ladyship the Boroness. We have found an ally in Nighttail. SHE has just helped us dispatch an offending shaman of an outside tribe that dabbled in necromancy. Evidentially the Tribal, Chief? Is still ahead in his chambers.”

”I am a Servant of Ragathiel and my stalwart companion here is a Justicar with the backing of the Church of Abadar. To whom do we have the pleasure of speaking too? And do please watch your step, we have lost two companions today to perilous and fatal holes!”

An uneasy groan emanates from beneath the elf's wooden mask.

Oh great, priests, Hanzo mouthed at his companions. Out loud, he called down, "The Baroness sent you, huh? What is she paying you guys?"

"Don't y'all mind him, he's just Hanzo," Joriannika told the strangers, peering down the shaft. "My name's Joriannika, and these fellows are Guruthos and Thomas. Who are you, and who is Nighttail in her tribe? Is she a shaman too? Did she have anything to do with their slaves?" Jori bit her lip, hoping the answer was no.

"They can try prying my weapons out of my cold, dead hands," Hanzo muttered to himself grumpily.

Louder, he said, "We found your friends earlier. Messy. Sorry. But where is this kobold Chief? Are you the ones who poured poison all over the straw up there?"

A reptilian face appears at the bottom of the shaft. The voice that rasps out speaks in Common, "Since you obviously don't do much thinking, let me make this very simple for you. Me, kobold. Name Nighttail. Here to kill Roaghaz and take Bloody Vow tribe far from here. Joining me down here is One human. Its name is "Claire". And one orcish fella with too many names. So I call him, "Names." ... Now whoever is in charge up there, you and yours, are you in or out?"

Half-orc Inquisitor 3 HP 8/22 AC 16 Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5

"I see that Nighttail has explained our arrangement quite well. There's no point in killing all the kobolds we see unless we find a solution that will be beneficial to both parties and will ensure a more lengthly if not a permanent resolution. This is the task the baroness assigned us. Nighttail is our guide and has been quite helpful in showing the way to the kobold Chief."

The inquisitor replied in an uncharacteristic monotone rhythm for his race, not bothering to correct the kobold.

"Another group here could mean that either her patience is running thin, or that she had believed we've been all killed. Which would be half right. "

"It seems you took another entrance. We have encountered quite a lot of kobolds on our way here..."

Nighttail is getting visibly more frustrated while waiting for the strangers to climb down, but refuses to press on without her entourage.

She returns to Hak and keeps a watchful eye ahead.

Does everyone on the second level climb down to the third?

”Yes, traps, snapping turtles, Kobolds, you name it. There is some sort of religious strife happening with the tribe, but the sooner you come down the sooner we can end this.”

”Oh! Did you happen to recover any of the kidnapped villagers along the way? We were sent to see if we could find them.”

”You must be the group sent to the Witchtower I presume.”

Thomas is the first brave soul of the new group to descend the rope, followed by Guruthos, Hanzo, and finally Joriannika.

Stone and Sheaorlis, you first see a human man descending the rope, a bright light coming from the spear on his back. Stone immediately recognizes it as the same light spell he has on his pendant.

Following him is a tall slender figure. An elf, judging by the ears. The elf's face is completely masked by...well, a mask. A greyish wooden mask with a blank expression. It's creepy.

Another human follows. Ruggedly handsome... minus the handsome part. Not ugly, but certainly not beautiful. However,

the last to descend is a beautiful woman in loose white clothes, tainted with the dirtiness of this place. She, however, seems to glow herself. A soft complexion, but eyes that run you through.

Everyone can gladly provide a more apt description of their PC's appearance. Just so we all know what everyone is seeing.

Nighttail reenters the small room where the introductions are being made (sorta...). She is riding on the back of small dinosaur. Stone and Sheaorlis do not react to this, as they are used to it by now.

In her raspy voice, she addresses the party in Common. Specifically, she's addressing the two who were already down here with her, but it doesn't seem to bother her if the newcomers hear her words or not.

"Listen, 'cause this is important. Up ahead, there will be a gated passage that we will not be entering. Roaghaz's chamber will be just beyond, but those that protect the hatchery have no loyalty to the chief, only the future of the tribe." She finish with a grave finality, as if daring anyone to contradict her.

The inquisitor is dressed mostly in dark-coloured clothes and
wears a wooden mask as well but one that only covers the upper part of the face. He continues cleaning a gigantic axe and does not seem to be bothered by the appearance of the group. He takes a moment to asses how dangerous each person is and urges the party forward. "I think Roaghaz should not be that far. With your help, there shouldn't be any problem in dealing with him."

The cleric lifts the holy symbol at his neck of the winged bastard sword for the newcomers to see. He is dressed in dark greys and crimson peeks out as the liner of his cloak. The Cleric has a military bearing and the look of someone who has seen a lot of things growing up on the streets of a major city.

”I am a recently ordained Cleric Acolyte of The Militant Order of the Church of Ragathiel."

"If you are all quite ready, lets strike the head from the snake and get on with new management shall we?"

He says eager to continue on with the adventure.

"We won't hurt anyone who isn't doing anything to hurt us," Joriannika promptly (and perhaps prematurely) replied to the kobold. To the strangers, she nodded. "We found some people in bad shape. They were slaves," she added with an accusing look at Nighttail.

Hanzo eyed the dinosaur dubiously. "How did that thing get down here? Or rather, how does it get out? DOES it get out?"

Shaking his head, he paused and looked closer at "Claire." Did that guy look familiar...?

"Anyway, yeah, let's go. The sooner we get out of here, the better I'll like it."

Seeming satisfied, Nighttail leads the group on, she pauses to let the Cleric or Inquisitor pass, and she replies to Hanzo,
"This here is Hak. He's an allosaurus and my faithful friend. Don't worry. He only attacks those he perceives to be hostile towards me.... and also anyone whose face I say he needs to bite off." She winks at Hanzo. Then gives a small chuckle. But you're not sure if she's joking or not. Hanzo shudders slightly, once she looks away.

The next room shows what was left of the battle that was taking place when the second group arrived. Blood splatters sections of the floor and walls, and the bloody corpse of a robe-wearing kobold lies heaped on the floor. A crude idol stands in the middle of this room, decorated with grisly strips of viscera.

"I've rarely been down to this level, so I can't really say where any might be, but Roaghaz definitely will have laid traps somewhere."

Guruthos ignores the half-orc and takes a moment to drag the dead kobold's body to the side, then motions the spiral over his chest. He then turns to the tunnels, and quietly makes his way up the Eastern-most tunnel.

"Stone? Is that you?" Hanzo ventured, pausing in following Guru. Shaking his head, he told Stone, "I didn't recognize you in the fancy cleric clothes. Looks like your luck has turned, friend."

Then he slipped after Guru, keeping an ear out as much as an eye in the dimming light.

The kobold corpse was Churgri's, whom you'd slain minutes before.

Hanzo, I'm awarding you a 1d6 for using character backstory to connect these two parties together via RP. You may use it on any future skill check, saving throw, or attack roll while inside the caves.

Sheaorlis and Guruthos:

Looking at the remains of the kobold priestess, you both notice a gold unholy symbol. You also notice that the cloak the creature wears is of very fine quality. Very sturdy. So is her quarterstaff. The chainmail she was wearing is sized for smaller individuals than anyone in your party. Though she does have a spell component pouch, but, y'know, who doesn't these days?

Guruthos leads the party with Hanzo walking almost completely silent behind him. Except for the fact that Thomas' light makes them all visible, plain as day, Hanzo is stealthy. He's seen, but not heard (the way Thomas prefers him...probably).

As you exit the shrine room, the earthy corridor curves to the left. A small, sturdy wooden gate blocks a passage to the north. Nighttail, riding on top of Hak, stops in front of this gate, silently signaling that they need to keep moving. She also gestures for no one to talk, and to be careful.

The tunnel, which begins to be darken, not from lack of light, continues until there is a sharp bend to the north.

Perception DC 20:

Upon closer examination, you notice that a thin layer of oil coats the walls, floor, and ceiling of this passageway. They also appear to be charred, with a layer of soot lying underneath the oil.

What do you do?

"Watch out," Hanzo quietly hissed. "That place is an oven waiting to be lit. There's oil everywhere... and we wouldn't be the first to be burned."

ETA: Wait, are we already in this passage? Then Hanzo will recommend we move on quickly - faster than someone can drop a torch on us if they notice us here. IS there a hidey hole of some kind where someone might light it from?
