I'll try to level up in the evening.

Lucina sat uncomfortably as Vi and Bronwyn argued. She didn't have a lot of experience with friends, but she had noticed that when two friends fought, friends off to the side often got dragged in. I suppose I should just be relieved that its not me getting yelled at for being miserable...Still hopefully no one tries to pull me into this...

She kept her eyes down, until she heard her name. Looking up at Bronwyn like a frightened animal, she replied. "Oh...um...right. Thanks." Keeping her eyes down, she scampered across the room, grabbed the book and returned to her hammock. Hiding her head in the book, she only peeked up to see Bronwyn storm out and Vi change form and snap out of her stupor. Guess they'll figured it out. I shouldn't have been so scared. I mean, why would anyone ever want or need my opinion in a situation like this? She let out a sigh of relief. Or was it relief? It almost felt a little like something else. Shaking the strange thought away, she returned to the book. Study hard. Learn everything that is needed to defeat a vampire. That's how I can help them...

Woohoo! New level! I must have crossposted with Fabian about it last night, because I didn't figure it out until I read Palisade's response. :)

Won't stop B from storming out - I'll assume one of the 'forged will tag along with her.

How much is Ice worth? 8000gp as per a +2 weapon? Or is it less, as it only ices on a critical?

I took off the wand of mage armour as I gave it to Bronwyn ages ago (when I got my armour). Bronwyn, if you want it, it had 5 charges left. I also took off the MW rapier - it can be sold.

EDIT - also, I still have one holy water left. And ...dang....I know there was something else....

Edit edit - oh yeah - is Vi really still at light wounds? She used a CMW and Lucina and Palisade also healed her.

Action 1:

Bronwyn took her scrollcase and spellbook with her when she left. She never looked back and didn't hear anyone call her back so she kept going. She found her way into a common area and spread out to study. Focusing on magic would help keep her mind off other things. Her time of reading and writing proved fruitful as her mind finally understood how to get a few spells to work that had previously seemed confusing to the wizard. She also wrote a few of the spells from the scrolls into her spellbook for use later on. The glitterdust could prove useful when they encountered an invisible Grilsha next time.

spellcraft: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30 DC=17 to put Glitterdust into her spellbook
spellcraft: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27 DC=16 to put Featherfall into her spellbook

She soon lost track of time and was gone from the others for hours before realizing how late it was.

I guess that would be two hours plus the time to learn her new third level spells...

When B leaves
Squeal nodded to Palisade, and to Bronwyn's back 'He has a much better way with people than I do. I wonder if it is because his voice is slightly lower.'

Action 1
Is B back by now? Palisade - I nominate you to follow her!
"I wish I could do that." Squeak declared, standing up from his makeshift-lab. "To just change who I am whenever I want. To adapt to any situation. I've tried to build it in, but it's all springs, and gears, and alchemy. Not believable at all. If I could do what you do, I'd make myself look like Grilsha, walk outside until someone noticed me, then ask to be directed to my cabin."

"Lucina. Can I ask your help with something? I'm going to try to rebuild my voicebox. I know humans find Warforged voices unsettling. Would you help me? I was thinking perhaps if I modelled it on an actual human voice - with a windbag, reeds and cords - it might sound more soothing?" Squeak looked to the druid and wheedled as he had not wheedled before. Now that he mentioned it it was possible to hear something in his voice. An irritating noise that just never really let up. You couldn't consciously hear it - and once you knew it was there you couldn't unhear it either.

Lucina; you okay with the last sentence?

Planning to buy some diplomacy with the justification he rebuilt his voicebox; that okay Fabian?

The turn name makes me think of one of my favorite movies ever - A Knight's Tale. "Yes, William, with the pigs. With the pigs." Also, is there a map of the journey?

Vi/Jorlyn stared at Squeak. "That's...actually a really good idea. Maybe not tonight - I think we should heal up and regroup before risking an encounter with them. But tomorrow...I could do that."

***

Later, when Bronwyn returned, Vi/Jorlyn walked up to her, then dropped dramatically to his knees. Taking her hand, he stared soulfully into her eyes and said, "I abjectly apologize for my behaviour earlier. I was completely out of line. I failed to remember your connection to this land of adventure and undeath, and it was not my intention to insult. Please, lovely maid, will you forgive this uncouth rogue?"

Action 2

Vi/Jorlyn grinned as they entered the dining room. "Now THIS is more like it!" He lounged backwards in a chair, leaning back on two legs, and propped his legs up on the back of an empty chair. He perused the menu, pleased with the choices. There had been some good food on offer at the Ambassador's ball, but they weren't in a position to sample much of it. He couldn't remember the last time they'd had a really good meal.

Sure – with a hostile vampire aboard, Palisade won’t trust Bronwyn is safe even on a trip to the privy ;^) The ‘forged will stick to her like glue, unless Squak is there to do the same.

Action 2

With a hostile grater undead suspected to be present, and the possibility of magically compelled minions already confirmed in the docking tower, Palisade took its role as Lady d’Deneith’s guard extremely seriously aboard the airship. Thus, it kept following Bronwyn doggedly around the ship, and during breakfast, settled itself one step behind and one to the left of Bronwyn’s chair, glaring impassively at anyone who came within throw dagger’s reach of the Lady, waiters certainly included – after all, one of them was never far away from a sharp kitchen utensil that could be used as a weapon.

@Bronwyn. Oh! Oh! Three words: Arcane ****** Discoveries.
I suggest Alchemical affinity, and raid Squeak's formula book.
Better yet Yelral's Blessing; bonus caster level, save dc and - (stereotypically) best of all - you can replace the bat guano material component of a fireball with a cheap gemstone. That's right - buy now and you too can justify buying a stunning ruby and sapphire necklace and earring set as "material components".
If that doesn't interest you, how about Creative Destruction? Damaging Evocations grant a number of temporary hp to you as they do dice of damage to the opponent.
Perhaps you'd like to branch out from just blowing stuff up? Become a Disney Princess? Well, with Feral Speech you too can talk to the animals. And birds. And fish. (Warning: Side effects include going Vegan). <cue clip of Gandalf talking to Eagles "Fly, you fools!">

@Squeak: What was the concern? Just that you had Lucina think your voice was annoying? If so, no worries. I had to reread your last sentence like four times to figure out what you thought might be objectionable... :)

Lucina looked up from her book, clearly annoyed by the interruption. "You're right. Your voice does have a certain irritating quality to it..." she replied drily. Still, the warforged looked at her more pleadingly than she thought such an expressionless creature could. She let out a sigh, "Well...I'm not exactly knowledgeable in engineering...but let me think." Contemplating for a moment, her brain scoured the books she had read in her life until she finally remembered something. "Hmm...Well a few years ago I read Sciferiozo's treatise on golem creation...He had chapter in which he discussed their voices briefly. He mentioned that for guardian golems that he preferred to go for a deeper sound and used reeds from instruments to create vibrato. He believed it was a psychological thing. It gave the guardians the illusion that they were creatures of great authority and wisdom...ancient almost..." Lucina shrugged, "When in reality, they were just mindless automations...most of whom were less than a few years old." She looked Squeak up and down. "So maybe something like that? Humans are easily fooled..."

Everyone is at full health and abilities (leveled up abilities) in the morning.

Vi: let's upgrade Ice to be a +1 frost weapon so 8,000 gp; you may roleplay that 'discovery'.

Squeak: your RPing is fine (and entertaining) so feel free to continue. You don't need to ask for permission for 'cosmetic' changes. Everyone should feel free to reskin anything and everything as desired.

I'll move this along later today.

Any ideas of how you want to spend your first day aboard? If not, then I'll just leave it open.

@Lucina: yeah, where I 'grew up' telling people what their characters think is a sin. I was trying to hedge around it, but it eventually go so mild it was pointless.
"That sounds perfect! Thank you. Hmmm. I still have parts from the people I dissembled..." Squeak rooted around until he found some parts, then opened up his chest cavity and started to tinker. Very early in the process his voice cut out.

later, while testing one of his prototype voices, Squeak asked, quietly "Lucina - is there a spell to make a Warforged look like a human?" like this

Female Human Druid (Menhir Savant) 6 | HP 42 | Init +2 | AC: 24/22F/13T | Fort +6, Ref +4, Will +9 | Perc. +14, SM +14 |

@Squeak: Ah...the much maligned godmodding. While I generally think its good practice to not describe the actions or thoughts of other players, to me it came off more like you were just describing the sound than trying to force any reactions upon me.

Kn: Arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 Figured I'd roll, since the spell isn't on my spell list.

Lucina looked up from her book once more. "A spell to make you look human? Hmm..." She thought for a moment before shaking her head, "I did not encounter such magic while training with the druids...and it wasn't in the book I mentioned. I'm sure some wizard has cooked like that though...Perhaps Bronwyn might know...or with some research it could be found out..." Lucina stared thoughtfully at the warforged for a moment, unsure if she should continue with her next question. Ultimately, she decided to ask. "Why do you want to be human so bad all of a sudden anyway? It's not like we're all that great..." she mumbled woefully.

Since Vi/Jorlyn will be unknown to the enemy, he will spend the day wandering about, trying to get the lay of the boat, seeing who the other passengers are, trying to determine where they might be holed up.

Male Warforged Artificer (Alchemist) 5. AC 21. HP 43/43. HD 5/5, 1st 4/4. 2nd 2/2.

"Oh no." Squeak assured Lucina "You suck. You only last about a hundred years, you can't be repaired properly - let alone upgraded. Your manufacturing process is inefficient. Your skin is so fragile I wounder that you aren't always bleeding. You get sick all the time - that looks unpleasant. Your energy processing is efficient, I admit, but you have to build your whole life around it. A life you spend a third of asleep! And the smell..." Squeak shook his head "No, no, it's a wonder to me that you aren't all trying to become Warforged. But there are things about humans I wonder about - and humans don't even understand themselves. I mean, until your comment I didn't understand there even was a cake language. And I'm not sure Vi or Bronwyn did either - even though they spoke it. The whole voice thing. Herd calls. Collective behaviour. It'd all be so much easier to see it from the inside, I think. Also, I'm curious about sex."

I'm dying XD. How do I even respond to that?

Lucina initially seemed unoffended by the warforged's analysis of human weaknesses. However, the longer he went on the more confused she became. By the end of his speech all she could do was stare at him in stunned silence. "Uh...um..." she began trying to stammer out. Where to start? There was at least one thing in there that she definitely wasn't planning on trying to explain to him! Finally, she did manage to force out a few words that vaguely formed a question, "Um...Cake...Language?"

I think I want to do an Arcane Discovery for her bonus feat. Did you mean Forest's Blessing? I couldn't find Yelral's Blessing in the list of discoveries.

@Fabian: Can we make a hybrid discovery for Bronwyn? It makes more sense for her to have the Alchemical Affinity because of her time spent with Squeak but I really like the idea of a shiny necklace that she can use as material component for her spells. I propose that she +1 to caster level and DC when casting wizard/alchemical spells from Alchemical Affinity and using gems in place of material components from Forest's Blessing

"Yes. It was quite the revelation. You explained that your mother believed you had kept us waiting and sent baked goods in reparation. When I offered to give you a cake you explained that would force your mother to invite us to dinner. i.e. that communication of concepts was possible amongst humans using food - specifically baked goods. Interestingly while all organics there seemed to understand the language, they were unable to properly vocalise the relationship until you. Vi explain that a deluxe box of chocolates was a way of asking for a date, and a slightly less deluxe box was a way of showing gratitude for some task. Palisade and I were intrigued, and have been attempting to deduce a grammar."

Squeak nodded thoughtfully "But it is in herd-call behaviour that I think we are finally starting to have our breakthrough. It explains so well why humans spend all that time talking about things that are inconsequential. 'How was your day', for example. If your day was poor, and I was able to help, then you would tell me. If I was not able to help, why would you spend more of a day that was already going bad answering the question! Insanity - unless it is the sounds that are important, rather than the words."

"Here... let me show you... Let me see, extra base to imply size. subharmonics... yes." Squeak - vocal system in his hands - looked up at Lucina. "So, imagine someone came up to you and said "LuciNA. ARE you okay." diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 the words came out almost inaudibly deep and Squeak held up a hand. "Hang on, I think the reed slipped... Ah." The box squealed for a second "Lucina. Are you okay?" emerged from the box, deep, but human, with concern etched in. diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

after this Squeak will reset his mutagen.

Action 1:

Even though Bronwyn hadn't seen this face before, she quickly surmised that it was Vi - especially since the 'forged weren't trying to rip him limb from limb. Bronwyn stared at Vi/Jorlyn expectantly, "Well?" The blank look from Vi/Jorlyn elicited a playful sigh from the wizard. "When a lady is apologized to, there is often a gift involved to demonstrate the depth of remorse. So?"

Action 2:

Absolutely love Squeak's list of everything wrong with people :)

Action 3:

Bronwyn smiled politely at both of the dwarves. "I've only just gotten out of school. My family ties have paid for this trip for me and my entourage. You see I'm on my way home to Karrnath. But if you have a business card or some way to contact you in the future, I will definitely keep your guild in mind when it comes to protecting my future wealth."

Action 4:

Leaning over to Vi/Jorlyn she whispered, "Good thing you didn't change yourself to look like Grilsha and wander around the ship. Seems like she's disguised herself." Bronwyn looked thoughtful, "So do we assume that Grilsha and Lucan are staying in separate rooms? Or is Lucan hiding and only one of the sequestered guests is Grilsha? Although the Captain said all passengers were paid and accounted for so if Lucan is hiding then the Captain knows."

”Analysis. It seems likely the subject and his sister are sharing a cabin. They have shown they are proficient at magic. If only two of other paid passengers have been seen but neither seem to match the given description we have to assume they are magically disguised. If one of them has had his or her physical features altered, it is possible they both have. Conclusion. It is most likely two passengers of any of the four represented races are in truth our subject and his sister; otherwise they’d have needed to expand further magic to make their cabin mates believe them to be old acquaintances. If they have made use of magic to disguise themselves, they may not have limited themselves to minor alterations. It is possible the two dwarves you breakfasted with were in truth the people we are looking for,” Palisade summarized its thoughts.

”Suggestion. We seek to determine from the people willing to circulate with crew and other passengers if any of them are under illusion or alteration enchantments.”

Action 2
Lucina rubbed her temple as Squeak explained cake language and herd calls to her. Where to start? Is it even worth it? No. Probably not... Instead she just stared at him with her usual dead pan expression. Ugh...Why won't he just let me read! When Squeak began asking her if she was okay, testing a variety of different tones, she tried to ignore him at first. However, eventually she groaned and replied. "Actually, I have been having a problem that you might be able to help with..." She let out a dramatic sigh. "You see, I'm trying to do research for this important mission I've been involved in....BUT THIS ANNOYING PERSON KEEPS INTERRUPTING WITH HIS STUPID QUESTIONS!" With that she slammed her book shut, shoved it under her arm and stormed out the room, trying to look for somewhere else she could read in peace.

Action 4
Lucina looked around the dinner room nervously. What if they were overheard? Quietly, she murmured, "Think we should consider using code names for them while we are out in public? Like Leo and Gertrude or something?"

To Palisade, she replied, "Some magical scouting may be helpful. I do have some skill at detecting the use of magic...as well as the presence of undead...and some other unnatural presences..." She turned to Bronwyn, "You have also been trained in some magical detection? The universities at least still teach that, right?

Female Human Fire Adept Wizard/5 | HP 32 | Init +2 | AC12 | Mage armor AC15 |

Action 2:

It looks like Bronwyn is back in the room when this conversation is happening so she may respond after all :)

Bronwyn watched in fascination as Lucina got a taste of what she had been dealing with for the last few years. Memories of a fairly recent conversation about brothels flashed through the wizard's mind and she masked a chuckle with a cough as Squeak brought up the topic of sex with the druid.

But at Lucina's outburst, a fiercely protective nature came over Bronwyn and she could no longer sit back and watch. Instead of chastising Lucina, Bronwyn approached Squeak. "Can I help at all with your questions? You may have been looking for a new opinion but if you still care about my point of view then I can help."

Action 4:

Lucina wrote:
She turned to Bronwyn, "You have also been trained in some magical detection? The universities at least still teach that, right?

Bronwyn was still a little annoyed at how Lucina had treated Squeak earlier and almost gave her a snarky response about stupid questions because of course universities taught the most basic of magic but she stopped herself. Without elaboration the wizard said, "I am. They do."

Lucina gave Bronwyn an analytical look. She looks annoyed. At me...or still Vi? However, she tried to just shrug it off and replied. "So then you will help then? Of course, I would rather if someone came with me. I am not a very good liar if people start pressing me on what I am doing." "When a lady is apologized to, there is often a gift involved to demonstrate the depth of remorse. So?"

Jorlyn bit back a grin, keeping the carefully crafted remorseful look on his face. Bowing his head, once more, he said, "You are absolutely correct, oh beautiful and wise one. Which is why I brought you..." He reached into his bag and rooted around. His hand finally found the handle of the small mirror he'd bought in case it came in handy against the vampire. Pulling it out, he presented it to Bronwyn with a flourish. "This! For nothing compares to the lady's beauty, so what better prize than to be able to enjoy it at every opportunity, as indeed I do."

Action 2

Jorlyn stared in astonishment at the closed door, which still vibrated with the force of Lucina's exit. "Well, that was just rude. Friend Squeak, do not blame yourself for that outburst. Lucina was behaving like a child. Not for the first time." He made a mental note to speak to her about it later.

Action 3

Jorlyn perked up during their conversation with the dwarves. If they were here, perhaps there was money to be had onboard. He determined to keep his eyes open, and see if he could figure out whose pockets might be in need of lightening.

Action 4

Jorlyn nodded at Lucina's assessment. "Yes, code names are a good idea. Leo and Gertrude it is." Looking to Bronwyn, he said, "And perhaps you can use your mirror. Or is that not true about vam...um...vegetables? If you check your hair in the mirror, at just such an angle, you should be able to see the reflection of the passenger behind you. Or not, as the case may be."

[qutoe]Lucina gave Bronwyn an analytical look. She looks annoyed. At me...or still Vi? However, she tried to just shrug it off and replied. "So then you will help then? Of course, I would rather if someone came with me. I am not a very good liar if people start pressing me on what I am doing." She looked around to everyone, but continued to occasionally side eye Bronwyn. Yep. Pretty sure she's mad. At me. What did I do this time?"

Jorlyn stood and swept an elaborate bow at Lucina. "I shall accompany you, dark maiden. For my tongue is silver, and my blade is ice."

As they moved away from the others, he said softly, "What you said to Squeak earlier was incredibly rude. I know you like to keep yourselves at arms length from us, though I don't know why. But if that's what you really prefer, we'll respect it. But you still need to speak with respect to us, even the 'forged. And if you screw up, you need to apologize. None of us are perfect, certainly not me, but we can forgive and be forgiven, as long as we seem to care."

Action 2
"That's alright." Squeak's voicebox relied in a high falsetto "I think it was the pitch." He paused for a second, and handed over a small bottle "Oh, while I remember, here is the silversheen."

Fabian: Can you transfer the silversheen to Vi please. I think Palisade has the shortsword. Squeak and Bronwyn have fire and Lucina can be mean at them ;P
Am I okay to have Squeak knock up some Weapon Blanch? it is DC 20, 5gp, so should be pretty fast - even if it is one use only. Could it be used on Squeak's natural weapons?

Bronwyn giggled and curtsied before taking the mirror. "Now this is more like it. It's nice to be appreciated." She then pulled Vi/Jorlyn to his feet and gave him a hug. "Glad you figured things out."

Lucina's not mean! She's...er...niceness impaired...

Lucina gave Joryln a defensive look, "He was...! He kept...! Hrmpth!" She folded her arms and looked down to the ground, realizing her excuses were not going to be bought. Without making eye contact, she said, "Look...He wanted to know how to make people like him...I couldn't help him with that..." Her frown deepened. "But I can read a book...and learn about our enemies weaknesses...and maybe stop you all from getting killed." Without looking back up she begins walking briskly through the aisles. Almost inaudibly she muttered under her breath, "I'm doing my best...okay?"

Later
Lucina approached Sqeak. "Erm...Hi. Squeak." She announced awkwardly. "You're voice box settings yesterday were well calibrated. I was just in a bad mood." Standing stiff and serious, she continued, "I only mention this because I would hate for an experiment to be tainted with bad data...Also, this is for you." From her pocket she pulled out a slice of cake wrapped in a napkin that she had snuck away from the dinner buffet, placed it on the warforged's hammock and quickly moved away. She could not bring herself to speak the words that she was supposed to, but she hoped that Squeak would understand the language.

[uote]But at Lucina's outburst, a fiercely protective nature came over Bronwyn and she could no longer sit back and watch. Instead of chastising Lucina, Bronwyn approached Squeak. "Can I help at all with your questions? You may have been looking for a new opinion but if you still care about my point of view then I can help."

"Yes. If you can spare the time I would very much like to hear your emotional reaction to a series of voices. Palisade and I have identified that out inhuman voices are causing you to feel that you are alone. I am undertaking to change my voice so you will feel that you are with other humans when you are with me." Squeak nodded, and continued abruptly "I believe a lower tone, with rises and falls in inflection, is the key. I need to determine which of those work. I believe I have accidentally unlocked a particularly counterproductive set of settings while talking to Lucina."

Squeak was calibrating to respond when Lucina walked off. Instead he looked at the cake. 'What does it MEAN' he wondered. Carefully he pulled out his book, a pen, and a scalpel and started to dissect the baked good.

I'm Ok with this.

Bronwyn gives Squeak a sympathetic smile. "I like you just the way you are, Squeak. I apologize if I made you feel otherwise. But I will listen to all the voices you want and give an honest opinion on each one. I'm happy to help. As far as Lucina is concerned, I think it may have been more about her mood rather than your voice settings that elicited the response you received."

Yes, silver weapon blanche can be made by Squeak and applied to his natural weapons.

Craft: Alchemy +14
Alchemist's bonus +2 if crafting
Crafter's Blessing +5
Precise Logic for reroll if needed.
Accelerated Crafting +10DC
normal dc 20
Swift Alchemy to double speed
craft: 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 2 + 5 = 35
progress = 30*35*2=2100sp/week = 42 blanches/week = 6 blanches per day.
so in a day can make 6. Will cost (30/3)=10gp.

I'm fine with this; it's one of the perks of being an alchemist.

I looked up why you couldn't make the other silversheen (the one that lasts one hour) and it turns out that it's magical and not alchemical. Bummer.

Action 2
"And the texture? Can you describe that?" Squeak was careful to ask only Bronwyn, so Lucina - on his other side - could concentrate on eating. The 'Forged sighed "I sometimes wish I could eat. It looks very enjoyable. Oh! What's that black dot - is that a raisin?"

Palisade’s sheet has been updated, since I didn’t hear any comments about the build ;^)

”Analysis. Size and colour would indeed indicate the subject is a desiccated grape,” Palisade commented. ”Or possibly excrement of a rat or another small rodent. But House Lyrandar seem to have invested in pest control, so that seems unlikely,” Palisade continued in satisfaction. After all, rodents might cause incremental damage to the many sensitive magical apparatuses that were no doubt needed to contain and channel the power of the bound elementals. Taking steps to minimize the risk was a sensible precaution.

"Conclusive proof will be available once Bronwyn describes the flavour." Squeak pointed out "Rodents are extremely hard to control. They are alchemically and magically resistant to a surprising degree."

Looks like the order of events got a little funky in the recap. Lucina replied to Jorlyn about Squeak and "apologized" long before Jorlyn called her out on it?

Maybe. At one point I had to have Lucina get back into the cargo hold because she had left and then Jorlyn called her out and Lucina responded.

It was late last night and my last turn recap of the day and my teen-age daughter would not stop talking to me so there could have been mistakes. :)

I thought Lucina and Squeak were talking on a previous day (he wanted to fix his voice as a pre-leveling thing). The discussion happened during a meal the next day. Lucina and Jorlyn discussed it right after that while they were searching the ship. Then that evening Lucina talked to Squeak again. Maybe I got confused though. It can get a bit hard to follow.
