"Poncy? Poncy? You frabjaberous bandersnatch! That you spout such inanities only seeks to further the impetuous solicitude of my argument!
And, yes. 'Wiggling my fingers,' as a philistine such as yourself would call it, IS the best response to--ooo! A quasi-prehensile pseudopod! Intriguing!" Power exclaims as he bends low to examine the severed limb. He cuts off a sliver of it and stows it in a vial because all wizards always have a spare vial.

"Oh confound thee, thy clack-box afternoon farmer be all hat and no cattle! A chuckle-headed, cow-handed foppish duke of limbs! More a fussbudget gadabout hath never gimbled in the wabe! Your ability to be a rumbumptious sauce-box is only overshadowed by thy craft as a shabbaroon rattlecap!
You sir, ever shall be a Gentleman of Four Outs!"
Normally Rankev did not fain to play the ginger-snap, but such an occasion seemed to call for it.
True story. I once made a Savage Worlds character whose combat effectiveness was based on his ability to tell Yo Mamma jokes. He was the second most effective fighter we had. ^_^

So, you re-group and continue heading towards the ruins thru the blighted lands.
Eventually, you see the tall shadow of the remains of an ancient tower rising above the landscape.
Continuing on, you eventually reach the site of a small ruined castle - besides the crumbling tower, only the foundation is left, along with a few knee-high portions of walls.
After a little exploration, you find the entrance to the root cellar (or dungeon). The wooden door that used to cover it has long since rotted away.
Standing around it, you hear animal sounds coming from below.
What do you do?

![]() |

Rankev approaches their host the knight, "What cacophony is this? Didst thou know thy safe harbor was otherwise occupied? Hast thou any ken of what creatures await for us down there?"

Teren of the Hills |

Teren moves up to the door, places his ear against it and tries to determine what the animals within are, and what they're saying.
The grunts, barks, chirps, and calls of the creatures of the wild are as language to you. You can understand any animal native to your land or akin to one whose essence you have studied.

Teren of the Hills |

Ordinarily, Teren would scout this himself. But, between not being able to understand whatever creatures are inside, and what's happened over the last two days..."Agreed. Head in, I'll follow you down. Onick, you coming?"

![]() |

As Teren and Rankev line up at the door and wait for Zathra, Rankev mumbles, "Hmmm. yes," and delves into his fat intellect to see if he can recall what manner of creature would make such sounds.
Spout Lore: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 1) + 2 = 8

GM_ZenFox42 |

Rankev, the closest thing to the sounds that these things are making are the wild cat-beasts of the North, but you've never heard of them coming this far south.
As Onick joins the group, and Rankev mumbles to himself, you all suddenly see pink, glowing eyes looking up at you from out of the darkness below. Lots of pink, glowing eyes.
What do you do?

"Well, let us see the true form of that which would oppose us," Power says as he breaths a calm Light onto the top of his staff.
Spells!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 2 = 9
I lose the spell

GM_ZenFox42 |

Let me paint the picture again : somewhere in the middle of the stone floor of the small castle, is an opening with stone stairs going down below the ground. There was probably a wooden door covering it in the past, but it's long since rotted away.
You all are standing around the hole, looking down into the cellar.

Teren of the Hills |

Teren glances at his companions, then focuses inward, calling the spirit of <short-short-long rattle>, and collapsing down into a coiled rattlesnake.
Shapeshifter: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 3) + 2 = 11
He then slithers down, into the darkness.
AIUI, modes of perception come automatically with Shapeshifter, so snake-Teren should have infravision without spending hold. Proposed moves:
Inject with venom
Navigate the tunnels unerringly
(I picture "inject with venom" as being basically a bonus effect on a successful h&s, as opposed to a "free hit", but could be convinced otherwise)

Teren of the Hills |

Teren takes advantage of the creatures' ignorance to study them, trying to spot anything that looks like a crystal on (or in) the attacking canines, and what the best way to fight them might be.
Discern Realities: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11
What should I be on the lookout for?
What here is useful or valuable to me?
What here is not what it appears to be?

GM_ZenFox42 |

Zathra, roll your damage. The creature you attack bites back in return, doing d8 damage to you.
Rankev, there's *at least* one for each of you. By the light of your staff, you see two coming for you. What do you do?
Teren - You should be on the lookout for the pink gems (if that's too self-obvious, please feel free to let me know and I'll try to come up with something else). The thing that's useful to you is the small pink gem you spot on each creature's foreheads. The creatures themselves are not what they appear to be, but you can't tell what their form would be without the crystals.

Teren of the Hills |

No complaints about "the thing you were looking for is in plain sight" :p
Snake-Teren moves to the side of the pack of hounds, before shedding his form and, quickly as possible, trying to strike the crystal from the nearest creature's forehead.
Not sure what you feel is the best move for that; feels like defy+Dex to me. +1 forward from the DR.
Defy Dex?: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (2, 3) + 1 = 6
Well. Unless that's Str, Int, or Wis instead - woo XP!

![]() |

"Oh confound! Well here at least we might see the beasts that come upon us face to face! See how haughty you feel after THAT!" he says, conjuring a magical bolt to fly into the closest one.
Magic Missile!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 5) + 2 = 13
Magic Missile Damage!: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

GM_ZenFox42 |

Seeing as Zathra's the only one making a physical attack, I'll add Onick's +4 to her damage...
Zathra's strike skewers the creature, killing it instantly. Another comes out of the darkness, heading towards her.
Rankev's and Sarthel's attacks damage the creatures, but don't put them down. The creature attacking Sarthel is knocked back by the force of her mental blow, but they continue to attack. Rankev, the creature you didn't hit attacks you - take d8+1 damage.
Teren attempts to knock the crystal out of one of them, but he slips, opening himself up to an attack. Take d8 damage.
What do you do?

![]() |

Hurts us!: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 ouchie...
"Confound thee savage beasts! I shall show you the meaning of the word...Power!"
With that launches an arcane strike close-range at the attacking thing!
Magic Missile!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 5) + 2 = 12
Magic Missile Damage!: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

Sarthel |

Sarthel again strikes out at the same creature with her mind :
Telekinetic Strike: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2 (Forceful and Messy)
And the creature attacks her in turn :
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
15/21 HP

GM_ZenFox42 |

Rankev's Magic Missile barely damages the creature, but it does wince in pain.
Teren manages to knock the crystal lodged in the creature's forehead out, and it quickly shrinks in size and shape to that of a fox-like creature. It scurries away into the darkness of the cellar.
Zathra's mighty blow misses, and the creature attacks in return.
Zathra, take d8 damage.
Sarthel's mental blast barely makes the creature pause, and it attacks her.
What do you do?

![]() |

"Ah HA!" Rankev cries as his magic strikes true and the monsters cower from him. "You do not find that overly sweet do you? Let us have many more servings of such sweetmeats as only I can serve! Consume all you can for there is...plenty more!" he jests as he again launches his ephemeral darts at the monsters.
Spellz!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7
You put yourself in a spot o' bother.
Damage!: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........

Teren of the Hills |

Teren pulls out some cloth, and carefully picks up the fallen crystal, stowing it in a small pouch. That done, he tries to strike the crystal from another creature...
Defy Danger Dex: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4
Teren will pick one that hasn't been wounded yet, if there are any. How many more beasties are there?
Should I mark off adventuring gear for "a bag and some scraps of cloth"?

Sarthel |

Sarthel strikes again at the same creature with her mind :
Telekinetic Strike: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 (Forceful and Messy)
But she left an opening for the creature to attack her in turn :
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
8/21 HP
