For Jorun, of course, has his own buttons which may soon be pressed.

Lio nods. Quietly, "We will stay close by throughout the feast. And after, if you need me... us." She looks at Shae and Myri for a moment, drawing them into the conversation just a little.

"Where are your rooms?" Lio asks Myri and Jorun.

She is still firmly within Shae's reach, and at least one hand is touching Shae, perhaps holding hands.

Female Elven Urban Druid 9, Brightness Seeker 1

First you see her, Reta you don't:
Although Lio was probably near Shae when Mel approached, she gives the two women their space, and finds something to do, like brush down the animals. Because she's perceptive enough to locate a needle in a needle-stack, she overhears most of the conversation, even without meaning to. She smiles at Shae's acceptance of the invitation, all the while combing the winter coats of the oxen and rhino's.

Lio keeps an eye on Jorun.

As everyone eats, Lio turns out to be terrible with chopsticks. But who knows.. maybe she'll learn. She badgers Ulf to show her how to hold them. And then does an amazing job of butchering what he just demonstrated so clearly.

He bows again. |The Feast of Three, which you attended last night, was a traditional exhibition of the Three Games of Hongal - mounted archery, bareback riding, and wrestling.|

Tonight, you shall attend the Feast of the Ancients, at which you shall see an ancient Hongali folk tale performed with pi ying xi - shadow puppets - accompanied by throat singing and the music of the morin khuur, the Hongal horsehead fiddle. Following this performance, the honored guests shall no doubt be asked to exhibit a short tale from their own lands using the pi ying xi and traditional accompaniment.

Pi Ying Xi: Sleight of Hand or Perform Act. Accompanying Narrative: Perform Act or Perform Oratory. Traditional Musical Accompaniment: Perform Sing or Perform String Instrument. Not everyone need participate, but at least one check from each of the three sets must be made. Assisted checks are allowed.

Tomorrow night shall be the Feast of Fire, when the entertainers shall display a dazzling acrobatics exhibition of fire breathing and swordplay whilst dancing upon hot coals. The Honored Guests will not of course be asked to endanger themselves, but a display of similar entertainments on their part will no doubt be requested.

Checks can be Perform Dance, Acrobatics, or Intimidate. All will be expected to participate in some way, but this can simply be "helping out" someone else by making an aid another check of some kind, which could include helping with preparation.

The following night is the traditional Feast of the Honored Visitors, at which the Honored Guests themselves shall plan both the menu and the entertainment from the traditions of their own lands.

Entertainment checks can be any appropriate "performance" skill such as Perform (any), Acrobatics, Escape Artist, or Sleight of Hand. All will be expected to participate in some way, but this can simply be "helping out" someone else by making an aid another check of some kind, which could include helping with preparation. How food preparation is handled will depend on certain choices made, so that will be explained at a later time.

And the final night will be the Feast of the Dragon, an outdoor celebration to which the entire town will be invited, at which vendors shall offer special foods made only during special holidays.

In the evening, as people begin to trickle in, returning from various ventures around and about, Ameiko gathers the Caravan together prior to that night's feast.

Kalimac has a pretty good Perform: Oratory skill, and so will be happy to do the "Accompanying Narrative" for the pi ying xi and will use the same skill during the Feast of the Honored Guest. During the Feast of Fire, I think he'll be helping out.

Lio doesn't have these skills either, but she could use her magic to aid someone who is performing. maybe she can cast an impressive spell to aid an intimidate check, or quietly bolster someone's dexterity with castings of cats grace... or both :)

If Myri hadn't helped keep the servants away while Shae hustled Lio into their room, things might have gone much worse. But she can breathe now. And that has let her reflect. "A vendor, I think," he replies in Halfling. "And while it may not be the most romantic of shopping destinations, I'd like to see about getting you fitted for some suitable armor. And perhaps something myself that will blend in better than the Varisian armor I normally wear."

"Clothes shopping is always a good date as far as I'm concerned, even if the clothing has metal in it," Ameiko says. "Lunch first? I'd rather like to find out what 'fried milk' is."

Kalimac has apparently stolen all of Myri's previous polished skill as they have clearly switched ability since Kalsgard. She not only can't seem to pick anything up with them, but can't even keep them seated in her hand. She blinks at them brow furrowed, then turns and looks at Buttersnips in obvious confusion.

"It's been seven months since you gave a try," says the nimble fey, who wields them effortlessly. "You're just out of practice."

She dextrously picks up various bits of food with the chopsticks and offers them to Myriana.

(Offers them rather ... pointedly, some of you suspect, with the Prince right there on Myriana's other side.)

Lio gives him a brief outline of how investing in caravans works, the risks, the possibly percentage chances for payout (she does not mention the actual gold piece amount she would be contributing, rather, she looks at Shae, her expression indicating she will be contributing and wants your opinion and thoughts later that night or the next day) and then she lets him know that with his 140 gold, they would be able to start the ball rolling.

Shalelu inclines her head to indicate that she understands the discussion will happen later.

Lio's tone seems to sound like she thinks it'll go over better if Jorun talks to Alaric, but she will do the talking, if Jorun wishes. "Aye ken we take a two fold approach. "Could you talk to Alaric?" he asks hesitantly. "I don't really know him very well."

Do you need prices on any of these?

I will think about suggestions for magic items; I will post some on the ooc board when I have.

Liothonae and Myri:
Shalelu's birthday will fall on the day of the Feast of the Honored Visitors.

Liothonae:
Since that is the day your group is planning the menu, cakes could be arranged that way.

Bonfires could be set up as part of the entertainment you plan, or in several other possible ways, some easy and some hard.

Both of these things should ideally be arranged IC.

Lio nods. "Maybe they have a park. And a bakery." The last bit is said rather optimistically. Lio likes baked things.

A pause, as she looks at the fresh faces. She looks back at Shae.

"I am quite certain I saw both on the way over," Shalelu answers.

GOZRAN 29 - THE FEAST OF THE ANCIENTS

When the time for this evening's feast rolls around, the menu proves to consist of steamed Hongali stone frogs, goose stomach, goat's feet tendons in wheat noodles, fish lips with celery, solidified duck blood, and drunken shrimp - a delicacy in which one dips live shrimp in alcohol before pinching off their heads and eating their flesh.

Chopsticks are, of course, still the utensils being used, and Myriana appears to be having better luck with them today, much to the Prince's delight. Once again, he has insisted that she take the place of honor, and spends most of the meal conversing with her.

The evening's entertainment is, in fact, enchanting. A troupe of performers use leather shadow puppets in the darkened room to portray the ancient Hongali folk tale "Why the Marmot Doesn't Have Thumbs".

The puppets are wielded with astonishing dexterity and cunning to create images on the wall that seem to move and gesture and speak like living creatures. The music is hauntingly beautiful - the horse-head fiddle is a lovely instrument, and, for those unfamiliar with throat singing, the pure harmonics create a second melody over the deep notes of the music, so it sounds as if the singers are accompanying themselves upon some sort of flute, even though they use only their voices. Uksahkka is in raptures, as this is her favorite sort of music.

The tale itself is, of course, narrated in Hongali, but if any of those who speak that language wish to quietly translate or explain the gist at a later time, here is the text:

Why the Marmot Doesn't Have Thumbs:
Once upon a time there were seven suns up in the sky and a terrible drought made the soil redden and crack. The rivers dried up, the plants and the trees withered, the people suffered from the heat and the animals were dying. All this seemed to be inevitable.

But, in one region, there lived a handsome archer called Erkhii Mergen who shot at what he saw and hit what he shot at. Many people and animals came to him and begged him, 'Please shoot the seven suns in the sky and destroy them.'

The archer Erkhii Mergen was very conceited about his accuracy as an archer and thought himself a brave, strong and proud man. So he took an oath: If I can't shoot the seven suns with seven arrows, I will cut off my thumbs and no longer be a man. I will no longer drink clear water, eat the dry grass from the last year and continue my life as a marmot living in a dark hole beneath the earth.

From the east, he shot at the seven suns moving high up in the sky, one after another, from the east to the west. After he had shot the sixth sun, he aimed carefully at the seventh, but just then a swallow came flying along and concealed the sun. When the arrow was released from Erkhii Mergen's bow, it didn't hit the sun but the swallow's tail; that's why the swallow has a forked tail. The last sun was afraid of Erkhii Mergen and hurried to hide behind the mountains in the west.

Erkhii Mergen thought, 'The swallow obstructed my view,' so he took his piebald horse and set out to chase the swallow and kill it. His horse swore, 'I will chase the swallow from dusk to dusk. If I haven't caught up with the swallow by then, cut off my forelegs and throw them away. Then I will be no longer a horse but live in an uneven and rough place.'

But, no matter how fast the horse ran, the swallow was always just out of reach and boldly flew around their heads. Finally dusk came upon them and the horse hadn't been able to catch up with the swallow. Erkhii Mergen got very angry and cut off the two forelegs of his piebald horse. Since then, it lives in an uneven and rough place and has become a Hongali jumping mouse whose front legs are short, too. It is said that the swallow is still mocking riders crying 'catch me if you can!' when, at dusk, she flies in circles around the riders' heads.

The proud Erkhii Mergen stayed true to his own word and cut off his thumbs. He didn't live as man anymore but became a marmot. He didn't drink pure water anymore, ate the dry grass from the previous year and lived in a hole beneath the earth. Since then, it is said, the marmot has only four fingers on each paw and, early each morning, Erkhii Mergen forgets that he has become a marmot whereupon he comes out of his hole and waits for the sun to rise, wanting to shoot this last sun from the sky.

There is a piece of meat in a marmot called 'man's meat' that no human is allowed to eat because the Hongali people believe that it is Erkhii Mergen's flesh. The only sun remaining in the sky is still afraid of Erkhii Mergen and hides behind the mountains in the west. That's why there is a day and a night.

When the tale is done and the applause at last dies down, Prince Batsaikhar asks to his Honored Guests perform something using the shadow puppets that comes form the young lands of beautiful women.

Any of you may, but tonight are not required to, make one of three checks to perform or assist:

Pi Ying Xi: Sleight of Hand or Perform Act

Accompanying Narrative: Perform Act or Perform Oratory

Traditional Musical Accompaniment: Perform Sing or Perform String Instrument

At least one check from each of the three sets must be made for a complete performance. Please also let me know if you are casting enhancement spells upon anyone.

"I can do the primary singing or string playing, if people want," Ameiko says quietly. "What shall we perform? Lio, did you have a historical folktale in mind? Or did someone else have an idea? Or ... maybe should we just do the one about the bear, since all of us know it?"

"There are a couple Galtic folktales I'd love to share with the prince," Alaric says. "Let's see... there's 'We Have Them Outnumbered,' 'How the King Lost His Head,' 'The Day the Leech Learned Responsibility,' 'Workers Control the Means of Production...'" Alaric will continue to list stories that all sound like they end with some rich guy being murdered by a mob.

Male Human (Ulfen) Oracle of Battle 10

Hrunndalf volunteers to assist the musical accompanyment with his basso voice. Perform: Sing +3, untrained

He is more than happy to take a lead role in the third night's events, offering extravagant swordplay, Walls of Fire, and the appropriate bellowing to go with it. :) Intimidate +16

On the fourth night, he will again fulfill an assisting role, including the use of his voluminous voice to introduce and comment his friends' acts. Perform: Oratory +3, untrained

He will cast Guidance beforehand if that helps. He will likely have a +1–2 bonus from a new headband of Charisma, but it won't stack with Alaric's Eagle's Splendor.

Mel thinks on Alaric's suggestion, "Isn't 'We Have Them Outnumbered' one of the revolutionary songs?" She smiles "I have the music for that one."

"Woudnt that affend our hosts and cause us problms?" Lio asks quietly. Her tone, as she says the word 'hosts' shows her dislike of the Prince. But the party had a mission, and offending the Prince could derail that.
