1 person marked this as a favorite.

For too long has Garagun, Scion of Fire ruled the Vale of Ash. Though thankfully he sleeps the decades away, the signs of his past predations mar the valley, from Splinterwood to Garagun's own domain atop Mount Kar.

When Garagun first came to the Vale, local heroes banded together to form the Order of the Dragonsbane. However, their numbers have dwindled over the past 150 years, some of old age, most of dragonfire and sharpened claws.

Garagun slumbers still however, and the last remaining members of the Order are seeking some fresh blood to join their ranks. While the dragon still sleeps, the Vale must ready itself to slay the beast.

Dragonsbane is a Pathfinder Adventure for four characters of 1st to 12th level. It uses the fast experience track and uses a restricted list of material. Dragonsbane is suited to new players and old players seeking a less complicated game.

The Player Characters will adventure throughout the Vale, seeking allies against Garagun, recovering lost relics of the Order, defeating the dragon's minions and cutting off Garagun's access to the Vale's natural energies.

Reminiscent of some of my prefered classics such as The Red Hand of Doom, Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, newer modules such as The Dragon's Demand and video games such as Darkest Dungeon, Dragonsbane should provide ample opportunity for both roleplay and roll-play.

Character Creation:

For new players, I recommend getting familiar with the d20pfsrd website as this is most likely where you will find everything you need to play in this campaign.

Basic Creation (Read First)

  • 20 Point Buy; No stats below 8 or higher than 18 before racial modifiers.
  • Allowed Races: Human, Half-elf, Elf, Halfling, Gnome, Dwarf, Ratfolk, Ifrit, Undine, Oread and Sylph.
  • Allowed Classes: Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide. However, we will be using the Unchained variants of Barbarian, Monk, Rogue and Summoner. (Link)
  • Allowed Archetypes: Any from the Advanced Player's Guide, but only one archetype per class.
  • Allowed Feats: Any from the Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide.
  • Allowed Traits: You each get 2 traits. Rich Parents is not allowed however.
  • No drawbacks.
  • Each character begins with their average starting gold as per their class.

  • Deities: For divine spellcasters, you may select any two of the following domains: Air, Animal, Community, Earth, Fire, Glory, Good, Healing, Knowledge, Law, Liberation, Luck, Magic, Nobility, Plant, Protection, Repose, Strength, Sun, Travel, Trickery, War, Water and Weather.

  • Maximum HP at 1st level, we will roll each time afterwards.
  • No evil alignments. Your character's motives beyond this are up to you, but they must be willing to join the Order and slay Garagun.

Advanced Creation (Read Second)

  • Each character also receives a free Story Feat chosen from the following list: Artifact Hunter, Battlefield Healer, Blessed, Champion, Dragon-Touched, Explorer, Fearless Zeal, Foeslayer, Forgotten Past, Truth-Seeker, Unforgotten, Vengeance.(Link)
  • Crafting will be allowed during the game, but only to create non-custom items. You may not begin with crafted items.
  • Each character gets an additional skill point each level to spend on a Craft or Profession skill.

Character Submission

  • Please provide a physical description and a quick personality description.
  • Recruitment will run until the 25th of February. I will then choose four and only four characters. I will give extra consideration to more developed characters, balanced parties and then presence within the recruitment page. It is not however, first come first served.
  • Any questions should be asked below.

Very interested in this particular style of story, but it's been more than a fair while since I've built something using only APG and Core materials. I'll have to consider whether it's something I could get excited about playing.

Still, props for a really nice story concept.

It's something I've been wanting to try for a while now. A classic adventure with classic restrictions.

Keep me posted!

Interested, thinking a Half-Elf Ranger(Guide) taking the explorer story feat. He will go Cavalier once he joins the Order.

I'm interested Garagun. Looking at making a elven cavalier or paladin. Can't have a dragon hunt without a knight in it!

Gathrix if you are going to multi into cavalier I'll take up the mantle of divine healer to balance the party.

Hmm. I think a mounted ranger could be cool, but I'd want to have an animal companion I could ride, like a roc or something. I'll have to check where Boon Companion is from; I fear it's animal archive or something obscure like that. Most of the good stuff is.

Maybe something really simple, like a cleric, or a druid? I'd want to avoid over-reliance on melee, given we're setting out to kill a dragon.

Can we grab spells, traits and magic items from outside sources? What about alternative racial traits for the races you listed?

As mentioned, I'm only allowing the Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide options for now. I may very well drop items and give access to spellbooks containing spells from other sources during the campaign.

Don't forget that the dragon is also just the end game, there's 11 levels to go until that.

Sure. It just didn't say that anywhere, so I figured maybe the reason that there wasn't a blanket 'use these two books only' statement somewhere was that for other stuff we could use whatever.

Still, I'll see if I can build something within the confines.

By the way, the PRD sorts content by source, which makes it handy for stuff like this. Just putting it here in case it helps anyone else - I found it a lot more useful than the d20pfsrd for this, personally.

Edit: Going with a bard, I think. It's a good way to fill out the skilled slot. Won't have trapfinding unless you'd consider allowing the Trap Finder trait from People of the Sands? Still, can't have everything, and it'll be effective at ranged combat, which is probably worth the trade off.

Good call on the PRD. It's a little late to update the original post but here's the link:

LINK

As for content, I probably should have just put a blanket warning so I'll say it now. Only content from the Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide will be allowed at character creation.

I reserve the right to later add in content from other sources.

Complexity has led to many a GM being overloaded, this is my way of making sure this does not happen here.

However, Traits only appeared in Ultimate Campaign so I will allow them from any source, beyond banning the "free 900 gp" trait.

Thorn here. She came up lower in power than I normally go for, but I like bards, so it's good.

Debated arcane duelist for free arcane strike, but in the end I went with the standard version. Versatile performance is nice, and I did sort of say I'd be a skill monkey, so here we are. Skills aren't final, and I have more gear to buy, but it's close enough.

Good breadth of skills and definitely a good start to a long range attacker. She seems like a strong, all around character.

GM Gathrix here presenting Re'Tulan half-elf guide of the Tulan family.

Dark Archive

Dot, I may make an ifrit sorc or summoner

Submitted an Human Evangelical Cleric of Calistria, just need a few more fixes in the crunch and equipment to even the backstory.

Re'Tulan wrote:

Re'Tulan looks good, I like the backstory especially.

Sovereign Court

Here he is. I need to edit crunch and background though.

Darkin Burningwood wrote:

Just a quick reminder that the Rich Parents trait is not allowed.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yes, I had that when I applied to an older champain. Im changing it.

Sovereign Court

Okay, here is a quick blurp of his personality and appearance.

Personally; to put it simply, he acts like nothing impresses him. He puts his opinion in when he thinks it will help, and otherwise doesn't care much for anything. The one thing he loves, is fire. He takes ever moment he can to set things aflame

Description: his skin is fire red with black tattoos in swirling patterns along his contours. His eyes are yellow with cat slits. He stands with a slouch and bored look on his face most of the time.

I like the idea of being a Ratfolk, thats not usually offered. I will have a Ratfolk wizard ready in a day or two for your consideration.

Liberty's Edge

Very interested, let me see what I can come out with.

Cheers, we still have almost a week of recruitment so no rush.

Sovereign Court

Sorry, my other games just got ramped up, I'm dropping out of this recruitment.

On second thought, I'm opting out of recruitment.

Sad to see people go, thanks for the heads up however!

Huh. It appears that this forum doesn't like homebrew stuff much. You could try putting this up on gitp or myth-wearvers, you'd probably get more response there. Still, if you want to keep it on here, I'd like it myself. There's five or so people here right now, so you can get a game off the ground.

I've seen many homebrew games take off in the past... Might be a shift in preferences I imagine.

I'm sticking with this for as long as people are interested. We've got half a party already and I'll try and recruit a IRL friend to see if he's interested.

Liberty's Edge

We are interested. Working on my submission.

Im still interested just not sure which story feat to take.

Still heading Divine healer.

The Exchange

Dotted for interest. I'm thinking Unchained Barbarian (I started to build one for a game I eventually didn't took part in, but may have to rework him a bit, especially as he had a story feat not on your list).

You didn't ask for it, but just in case that poses any problems: While I have run and played in quite some PbPs at another board this would actually be my first game over here. Apart from that, English isn't my mother tongue and I'm living in Germany (time zone), so if any of these poses any problem for you, just let me know.

Re'Tulan still seeks out the Order of Dragonsbane. This is going to sound silly, but one thing I have noticed is the more activity and bumps you get, the more likely you are to be noticed. Some people are too lazy to hit recruitment and see the extended list so they only pay attention to the first 10.

Liberty's Edge

Ok, my submission, an adventurous (and lightly drunk) cleric of Cayden Cailean!
"Sober? What do you mean sober? Sober is the worst way of looking for a dragon!"
Cydfrid Thauwyn's first memories are very similar to what he lives every day. Waking up, with a hangover, in what he calls his temple, but most people call a pub.
As he doesn't remember anything beyond a year ago. He woke up, with a splitting headache, a tankard in one hand, and a rapier in the other. Nothing else to identify him, to let him regain his memories.
So he has look for a new life in wine and in adventure. In thrills and women. In bravado and luck.
If he doesn't have a past, he won't fear his future.
Even if that future includes facing a dragon.
He is a very easy going handsome man, a couple scars on one hand, more handy with the crossbow than with the rapier, blond hair and light blue eyes, small beard and permanent smile. A tenor voice made to charm women finalizes the man that so many fights has caused on this last year with offended fathers and husbands.

Looking good, we still have a few days left before I close recruitment!

Then I'll choose my four and crunch their character sheets.

I putting the Ratfolk wizard together still, just taking longer than I though.

Garagun - how do you feel about wizards taking bonded objects. Specifically the one I was hoping to take is a Staff of Mage Armor. If that is not acceptable do you have any suggestions/guidelines on what bonded object would be okay?

Here is Rostam's Ratfolk Wizard, all his info is in the alias. I have a section for the bonded object as the Staff of Mage Armor but will change that if you don't think that's a reasonable bonded object.

Also, do you want a more filled out backstory than I have listed? If so is there any information on the ratfolk in the Vale I could use to make it?

As written, you don't actually get a magic staff if you take a bonded object that's a staff. What you do get, is a masterwork staff that you can craft into a magic staff, as if you had the craft staff feat, as soon as you qualify for the craft staff feat, which should be 11th level, using the normal rules for magic item creation.

You don't have to have the actual feat to do this, but you do have to have caster level 11.

Also, a staff of mage armor would cost 3200gp. That's like, way out of bounds for what a first level class feature should give you at first level, even ignoring the rules.

Hmm... hadn't thought of it that way, my IRL group has always assumed you just get a staff/ring/wand etc that has magic already, and the add additional magic abilities was on top of what it would start with.

I will definitely change the bonded object to a normal staff, thank you for explaining this

Thanks Thorn for checking in.

Indeed, bonded item does not give you a magical item immediately.

24 hours left for recruitment. Dot in if you're still interested!

Sorry it took so long but here is Izmael Couris, cleric of the Celestial Hebdomad.

Izmael Couris

interested, working on an Paladin, unsure what race at this point.

My Ifrit Paladin is done on paper, just have to do the alias.

This is Browman's Ifrit Paladin.

He is about 6ft tall and has a strong muscular build. His slender figure and pointed ears lead some to believe that he is of elfish decent.

Abandoned by his parents at birth at one of the temples in the Vale. He was raised by the adepts and devoted much of his anger at being abandoned into training with various weapons. He has recently taken the vows of a Paladin.

The Exchange

Unluckily, I won't be able to finish my character in time, meaning that I'll have to wait for another opportunity. Have fun with this game.

Miranda Shieves: Bard
Re'Tulan: Ranger (Guide)
Cydfrid Thauwyn: Cleric
Rennec Thissik: Wizard
Izmael Couris: Cleric
Telthes: Paladin

We have six potential characters, two of which are unfortunately the same class.

If one of the two Clerics switches to another class, say a Cavalier or Rogue, I'd be tempted to take all six of you.

I'll give a small 12-24 hour window, no need to make the character, just state "Yes, I'm switching up".

If not, I'll cut down to a party of four.

Cheers!

Sure I'll switch up. Just as a sidenote Re'Tulan indicated he'll be going cavalier so I'll make a rogue.

Yes once I join the order, it seems appropriate and I wrote it into my character's background. I will check out some more "ranger" type cavalier archetypes

Actually the Order of the Dragon seems fitting both for character and campaign purposes.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for switching Izmael.
Time to make the alias.
