Bref does the Goblin style dance 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (7) - 3 = 4

Pretty sure that is better than the other option.

Nut dance.

Speaking of backstory: Jax, we've never discussed it, but I do believe you were raised in an orphanage. Since Talingarde is Lawful Good, most orphanages are clean, safe places run kindly and efficiently by dedicated priests, monks and lay servants of Mitra. That doesn't mean that growing up an orphan is fun, especially if you look like a demon.

Zimu, a while back I wrote that

Zimu:

I'd say you have had a personal encounter with Sir Balin. (No, not of a romantic nature. Antagonistic, and probably very much so.) I would say that (1) you've had some opportunity to observe him at close quarters -- length of a sword close, anyway -- and (2) you have good reason to dislike him. A lot.

-- you don't have to flesh that out in any detail, but if you want to, feel free.

An orphanage sounds like a brilliant place to grow up. Of course, getting even at the little brats who picked on his demonic heritage would have been enjoyable. Especially if it involved forging away every penny the new orphan's family had.

Wow, I missed a lot!

Went on a date then straight to work but off school and work tomorrow because of the holiday.

Lot of catching up to do.

Today's Pointer

If you guys go on a date with a girlfriend or your wife, try this line that was used on me today -

As you see your date for the first time in the evening, say aloud - 'You look simply amazing'.

The pull her very close and whisper with all conviction - 'I think we are being watched, were you followed here?' Then look around over your shoulders.

Makes for a great ice breaker.

DM would you know when the original post came up, I may have some notes if I know that date. I'll look at my posting and notebook.

I would really like to build on this if i could. Your suggestions of course are also very welcome.

I think it would be kind of unbalanced if it didn't. (Honestly, I think the Summoner trembles on the verge of being unbalanced already. But let that bide.)

One of the players in our bi monthly home game when the main Pathfinder rulebook came out use to insist that the Paladin was probably the class that went through the most improvement in game and if tinkered with could be very unbalancing.

Then later the Summoner and Kensai/Magus archtype became available and he never mentioned 'the broken Paladin' again. Summoners (and Gunslingers) are not allowed in our game.

Great classes though.

For sure the paladin got a big upgrade from 3.5. But much of that was necessary, because the 3.5 paladin was kinda underpowered. Did they go too far? I'd say not, though it's really pretty situational -- if you're constantly fighting evil, especially evil undead, outsiders, and dragons, then you could argue it. OTOH, in a low-evil campaign I'd say the pally is a bit *under*powered.

I don't think character class balance is as much of an issue in PBP, though I'm still new enough that I wouldn't be conclusive about that. Certainly PBP eliminates one of the major problems that I have with the Summoner in tabletop (viz., effectively playing two characters and taking two turns).

This is true too. Paladins strength against evil is also the class weakness. I saw a Neutral Druid and animal companion beat up on a Paladin in melee without any spells !

Thanks - I found the same upper level of the moathouse online. I cannot tell whether he built the lower level using MapTools or whether it came with a module and he scanned it from the pics. We are about to go down to the lower level an I have built that once, but do not like the way I did it, so I will probably redo it. Also, two quick notes on running. (1) You don't get your Dex bonus to AC when you run. Makes sense, right? Hasn't made a difference yet, but just FYI. (2) You can run a number of rounds equal to your CON, and then you have to start making CON checks or be fatigued. Not an issue yet -- we're in Round 6 -- but FYI.

Apropos of nothing, here's a piece I wrote a while back on an erinyes variant.

-- This really is apropos of nothing. Nobody you've met -- yet -- is one of the Habbalah. This is not mission critical information! At the moment it's just a bit of campaign backstory.

The Habbalah:

It's canon that some erinyes are fallen angels, or descended from same. The Habbalah take that a step further. They're erinyes who believe that they are still, in fact, angels. They're still fighting for Law, and -- they think -- they're still fighting for Good. They're just doing it with the gloves off. Heaven's other servants have fatally crippled the war effort with foolish, liberal notions of "mercy", "tolerance", "kindness" and "redemption". The Habbalah know that there can be no mercy in the endless war: no slacking, no questioning, no hesitation, no pity. Others may think they have "fallen", but the Habbalah know the truth: that they are actually Heaven's purest and most dedicated servants. And they're carrying the battle forward from the most dangerous advanced position of all... Hell itself.

This is, of course, completely nuts. And the Habbalah are all, every last one of them, insane. The typical Habbalah is a psychopathically fanatic paranoid narcissist, utterly convinced of her own goodness and righteousness as she carves a path of death, torture and terror through the planes of creation. A typical Habbalah will focus on a single sin or type of wickedness -- lust, say, or greed. Then she'll set herself to destroying the sin by destroying, torturing, or damning the sinners. And in the eyes of the Habbalah, pretty much everyone is a sinner. Committed the sin? Guilty. Thought about committing the sin? Guilty. Failed to actively seek out those who commit the sin? Guilty. Been a victim? Accessory before the fact -- you must have invited it. Guilty. Weakness is a vice that must be punished and purged without remorse. If you're not joining the struggle against evil, you are objectively pro-evil. We are the sword and the arm of righteousness. You're either wholeheartedly with us, right now, or you're against us.

The Habbalah live in Hell and serve Asmodeus. Of course, in their minds, that doesn't mean they're damned! No. The very suggestion is grossly offensive. Working for the Lord of Lies is just a temporary expedient, an extended tactical maneuver in the long struggle. Sure, he's an enemy, but this is how they can get the freedom of action they need. Think of a cop who goes undercover as a drug dealer so that he can gun down rival drug dealers. Even if he's dealing drugs and obeying a drug kingpin's orders, it's a net positive, right? The ends justify the means. One day Heaven will understand.

And what does Hell think of all this? Well, Asmodeus thinks it's great. The Habbalah are among the few servants of darkness that can consistently bring a smile -- a dark, terrible smile -- to his face. He is downright fond of the Habbalah, and there are several in his court.

As for other devils? They recognize that the Habbalah are mad, of course. But this is Hell. The measurement of success is not sanity, but efficiency. And the Habbalah, fanatics all, tend to be very, very good at their jobs. Also, they're incredibly tenacious at holding grudges, even by the standards of Hell. Telling a Habbalah that it's actually a fallen angel is an unforgivable insult that will earn the creature's undying and relentless enmity. It's generally not worth the trouble.

The Habbalah love disguising themselves as angels. (Because, of course, to them it's not a disguise.) If challenged, they are fiendishly good at coming up with excuses for discrepancies. This aura of evil? I'm still contaminated by my long sojourn in the flaming Pit. These innocents I've killed? I had no choice -- they were in the way -- necessary collateral damage in the service of the greater good. The paladin I cut down? Was about to fall -- looking into his heart, I saw the worm at work, and struck before he could be transformed into a champion of evil. Asmodeus enjoys turning them loose on the material plane, where they build and encourage organizations that do evil in the name of good. If a kingdom is launching a "pre-emptive" war against a neighbor, or a church is torturing and executing heretics "to protect the souls of the innocent"... could be there's a Habbalah at work.

Note that the Habbalah are insane, not stupid. Attempts to fool or trick them into recognizing their true status are unlikely to succeed. Making that happen would require the equivalent of at least a Wish or Miracle -- and even then, it's not clear what would happen. A redeemed, new-fledged angel? Or a devil that's just become an insanely enraged suicide bomb? You try it, I'll watch from over here.

(In game terms, you can quickly turn an ordinary erinyes into a Habbalah simply by giving it the Madness SQ -- that's the one where you use Charisma instead of Wisdom for saves -- and then using the Advanced template. However, most Habbalah have class levels; the nature of their madness is such that they've undergone rigorous Darwinian selection.)

As long as I'm expanding on the erinyes a little, I might as well say a word or two about their trampy Chaotic counterpart, the succubus. Again, this is just campaign backstory, side information, not vital and may not even be relevant.

The Sisters Market:

What makes the succubus different? No, no, besides the obvious.

It's this: succubi are, by their vary nature, social creatures. Other demons are solitary top predators, or slithering connivers, or rampaging monsters of pure destruction. But succubi need a social context to work.

So: succubi have a network. You could almost say an organization. Oh, it's a very chaotic organization, full of lies, jealousy, plots and treachery. Succubi don't actually *like* each other. But they have a lot in common, and as noted above they're social creatures, and also they can find mutual profit in working together.

How? Why, through the Sisters Market.

The Market is an informal network of succubi. It reaches all across the Abyss, and well beyond. Think of it as a Craigslist for demons. Though the current incarnation of the Market is fairly recent, something like it has existed for millenia. Because demons are demons, the network regularly gets crashed by cheating and abuse; but because it's so damn useful, it keeps getting recreated.

Succubi trade some physical stuff -- magic items and the like, and of course dominated slaves -- but mostly they trade information, roles, and hooks. Roles are identities that they've taken over. A "hook" is a Suggestion or Domination that a succubus has placed on a victim. (Yeah, it turns out that these things can be traded between two willing demons.)

So, say Candi has infiltrated a small mortal kingdom, dominating the queen and planting suggestions in the King's mind, and is driving the kingdom towards war and utter ruin. But suddenly she has to to away. Maybe she has a better job offer somewhere else; maybe she's suddenly become bored (this is the eighth kingdom she's ruined, frankly she'd like to try something different now); maybe she just got the news that the Shining Crusade is about to come to town and the palace will be crawling with good clerics and paladins. Whatever the reason, she contacts the Sisters Market and offers her role and her hooks -- the suggestions on the King, the domination on the Queen -- for sale. Tanya, who's been hanging around the Abyss torturing the same damned souls over and over, jumps at the chance; she offers an interesting magic item and, oh, the true name of a minor devil. An agreement is reached and, boom.

The Sisters Market also trades information. Much as they dislike each other, succubi tend to be gossips, and they love nothing better than a good, juicy secret. And they trade tactical information: I serve this demon lord, but I've noticed a weakness in his defenses. I'll trade it for information about the powerful good party that's rumored to be preparing an expedition to my plane of the Abyss. From a PC's point of view, this means that once you've encountered a single succubus, any subsequent one you meet may suddenly know much, much more about you. (This is especially true for characters who have embarked on a career of fiend-hunting, demon-binding, or anything else that seems likely to bring them into conflict with the sisters more than once. Demons are chaotic, but intelligent; they're not going to sit in rooms waiting for you to show up and kill them.)

The Sisters Market isn't only for succubi. Other fiends, and even high-level characters, can occasionally try buying or selling something. Just making contact would be a minor challenge in and of itself, and then of course you're dealing with a bunch of millenia-old chaotic evil outsiders with high Wis, very high Int, and very high Cha indeed. Good luck negotiating with the gal who can read thoughts, cast suggestions all day long, and -- oh, you have Protection From Evil up? -- talk rings around you anyway, because she has +27 Bluff.

Anyway, the Sisters Market.
