Thinking about recruiting a new player to play the rogue. What do you guys think?

Serila Gudlinck |

I don't mind, that's why I suggested a re-recruitment before: in case you wouldn't want to GMPC Alperion.
Though I'd personally prefer creating a new character over taking control of another person's character. Perhaps there's a way to let someone else join, and write Alperion out of the story after that person joins?
(That's how I ended up in another campaign recently, when a player had to leave. Well actually the GM had that character killed after the player left and I'm about to join, but there are other similar ways to swap a PC.)

Keanan Garnet-Gold |

Yeah, Alperon had a dream that his mother had already died from the disease, so in a fit of grief he runs off into the wilderness and commits suicide. (heh, I could really add onto this, but I'll refrain)

DM Giants |

There is a few good spots to get rid of the character within the adventure. I think I will wait until I have an opportunity within the story to get rid of the character then we can recruit another.

How tall is the rubble in the northeast corner of room/area 2? Could a person climb over it? I'm wondering if maybe we go into room 2 from both entrances might be a better approach. Or perhaps keep the spell caster a bit safer while still seeing inside.

Keanan Garnet-Gold |

@Serila/Nebdel: My OOC reply would have been too long and disrupted the gameplay thread, so I put it here.
While moving Balazar with another character is possible, you have to recall she's not that bright. I could give her the command to guard someone (or something), but if an enemy didn't directly come at or attack what she is guarding, she'd ignore it. So, if you move her around and then want her to attack, you'd have to make a handle animal check (as a move action instead of my free action). I need to be somewhat within eye/ear range of Balazar so I can tell her what to do. By level 3 it's practically an auto-success for me, but I still need to do it.
Also, while we could move around the building, I'm unsure if that rubble in the corner is very high or something that can be crawled over like difficult terrain.
It might be just a good idea to circle around the building/ruins to get an idea of possible entry/exits ahead of time while making sure nothing is lurking in the trees. I don't need anymore arrows in the gut. That hurt.

Nebdel Melfcane |

Exactly. I didn't want to wait around while the GMPC went off to do the scouting for us. I was thinking if you gave Balazar the track command so that it followed Alperion, its instinct would be to do that in a stealthy. We be far enough back in the trees that we can just follow the progress of Alperion and/or Balazar. If something happens, you would be close enough to give the lion an attack or guard command and we could charge up to support (or cover a retreat).

Keanan Garnet-Gold |

One option would be at level 4 to give Balazar a bump in intelligence to 3, thereby making him semi-intelligent enough to probably do that as he would technically understand Common, so if someone said "be stealthy" he could. It's still not the same as handle animal, but it is a close second since he could probably follow basic instructions from other party members. It varies by GMs, since most animals with 3 intelligence would normally qualify as a magical beast.

Just waiting to make sure everyone has seen the new location and the post so the group can decide what to do next.

DM Giants |

It's not that he would have a problem with the idea. I just don't want a player to miss out on the story.

DM Giants |

I gotta say the Play by Post format is much easier for a DM then a live tabletop game. Do any of you guys or girls DM at all? I have been DMing for 20+years now. I'm currently DMing the same campaign with some friends of mine on the tabletop and it is rough I believe you guys will do much better. I'm enjoying this game with all of you.

Keanan Garnet-Gold |

At least with play by post, you can get a bit more roleplay aspect going given the slower nature. I keep thinking about my character and what he must be like given his rather low Charisma and that he's a dwarf. I've come to the conclusion that Keanan deep in his heart realizes he lacks social grace. As such he overly compensates by trying to be social, but of course his jokes are bad and his manners are unrefined.
This COULD lead someone to get upset, but nah, that would never happen.

DM Giants |

I like the pace of PbP because it lets me test things up and role play better.

Serila Gudlinck |

Hoping to one day GM a game, but I feel like that requires some more knowledge on rules than I curently have. I'm quite new to Pathfinder, and haven't played anything like it before. Done some roleplaying before, but those were stories without or with barely any clear rules on combat. (Which results in people acting like overpowered gods, and for me that takes away all the fun in the game.)
I'd almost certainly run a PbP game, especially because I'd like to create a homebrew. PbP gives more time to shape the world, and I value the roleplay element of these games very much.

Nebdel Melfcane |

Serila, you might consider PFS. I have nothing against homebrew worlds/campaigns. But PFS is a good way to learn the rules. It is also a good way to get your feet wet in being GM.
The scenarios are quite short since they are designed to be completed in 4-5 hours F2F. They are also usually (though not always) fairly clear cut. So you know what rules you need to look up and make sure you understand long before you start.
There are also literally thousands of people who have GM'd each of them before you. Many are on these forums. So you can easily get some advice on how to handle things or what to watch out for.

DM Giants |

I love homebrew worlds that is what I mainly run. I did run a Dragonlance Campaign for a while as well. but for a new GM I would just run a premade adventure. The Beginner Box for Pathfinder is pretty good place to start.

Serila Gudlinck |

Was indeed thinking of using a premade adventure first. When I've done that a few times I'll create my homebrew :P (Already got plans for a world, haha.)
PFS seems like a really good idea! I play PFS, and finished my first PFS scenario rather quick. Can I write the chronicle sheets if I own the scenario, or do I need to register myself as an official GM of some sort?
And the Beginner Box would be fun as well, because I'd be able to help even newer players get started :)

Nebdel Melfcane |

Being a GM for a PFS scenario is pretty easy.
Go the PFS part of this site.
The GM section.
Register an event.
After the scenario is completed, you write the event number on the chronicle sheet and send it to the players.
You also need to report the character numbers that completed the scenario. I don't remember exactly how to do that since our local VL always does those. But it wasn't difficult.
Go to the PFS GM forum and people will be happy to walk you through the process.

Serila Gudlinck |

Thank you!
Currently have some essays to finish writing, but when that's over I'm going to look into it :) There are a lot of PFS scenarios that I think are very interesting, so chosing one might prove difficult.

Nebdel Melfcane |

Remember there are some that are free to download and still get consistent players.
Of the low level ones, the Confirmation is still new enough that many people have not been through it. Or want to run through it with a new character.
Some people really like among the living, among the dead, and among the gods. I thought the low tiers were kinda boring. But upper tier would be interestingly difficult.
I thought both of the faction ending scenarios from last season were great. But you might find that most people have played them already.
I like the Blakros set.
Before the dawn is a 2 part that I liked.
Shades of ice is a 3 part that was great. Part 2 TPK'd us. But really it was our fault for playing up.
Both of the goblin scenarios are amusing.
Anyway, that's a few ideas.

Serila Gudlinck |

@Nebdel: I'll look into those!
@Keanan: Whoops. It's updated now.

Keanan Garnet-Gold |

Okay. I moved Nebdel (per his comment above) and the NPC. I also combined August's map with Serila, but since they both moved to the exact same spot I put Serila behind August.
So Nebdel, we are all at the SW corner of the compound. I moved the NPC out just a bit so he could see around the corner as I believe he's got a bow.
Hope everyone is okay with the combined map.

DM Giants |

Thanks Keanan

DM Giants |

Perception checks everyone except August because he already did his.

DM Giants |

Please post a perception roll with every post while your in the dungeon. Thanks

Nice shot Serila!

Keanan, is Balazar transgender? I'm completely lost on Balazar's gender with you switching between 'her' and 'him' all the time :S
