"They have decorations as well. Used to be exquisite flower arrangements in addition to the ivy vines. But it dried up. Now it is basically kindling... And the establishment is not well liked by all, so this may be sabotage." Ophelia fills in and starts to shoo all the new recruits out the door.

Yes, it is in our Guard house. As per GM's earlier post.

Aye, I just knew it was _A_ guardhouse.

What threw me off was this:
Spoiler:

Quote:
Your unit will be rostered into one of the sections of Nex, and given an allowance to hire a Guard Station. much like a fire station in our world. Nex learned in the war the folly of putting all your Guards in a single AoE. The default guard station is expected to have living quarters for at least eight Guards and four prisoners. For simplicity the allowance will let the group 'purchase' 3000gp of rooms. Characters may invest their starting money in this if they wish.

coupled with this

Quote:

Mostly guards patrol in teams of two.

A squad is three teams. In most situations these teams will work in 9 hour shifts (a half hour overlap on either end of an 8 hour shift).

and this

Quote:
Your immediate boss is Senior Guard Lieutenant Spooky. He leads four special squads in your area nicknamed; Undercover, Redcoats (the medics - so named because their coats are said to be red to cover up blood), Spooky (you) and Worms (the poor bastards with sewer patrol).

Which means Spooky has 4 squads in the AREA, each of the squads has 6+ people(as i read it, per shift), and every guard station is designed to provide living quarters to 8+ guards.

So...I kind of figured that each or the special "Squads" has their own "guard station", and ours may not necessarily be the "Central Hub" where spooky has his office. But I guess I got it right now...

In that case, I'll take a minute to fetch my equipment and hastily don my armor, trying to fix it on the way over as good as I can.
@Castor: Even if I brought my equipment with me to the common room, in case we were not yet settled in, I would probably not have changed into my dress there, so chances would be I'd lack my armor then, but have everything else with me. Works for me, too...Daria'll learn to be ready at all times henceforth...

Male Dwarf (saltbeard) Bloodrager

A fire…Thirus thought as the group began to file out of the interview room and move together. Crowd control, evacuation and possible dangerous animals? A straight forward assignment and while Thirus sometimes liked puzzles he knew this sort of trial would suit him.

He nodded as Ophelia began maneuvering them and the dwarf moved surprisingly quickly through the doorway. He came fully packed, as to make a good impression of ‘battle-readiness’ to the commander so he lucked into being fully prepared, unlike the struggling Daria. Thirus offers her a helping hand with her armor as they quickly move out into the streets.

The holy warrior of Torag watches the Halfling Daria closely. He tries his best to keep his solid and massive body between her and Morgan. When he said he’d bring them back alive he meant it, even if hat meant from each other. Then he heard he suggest splitting up.

”Did you hear, Daria? Aberrations and oozes, not to mention a panicked crowd. We should stay a single unit, able to deal with anything that comes up. If someone goes ahead, we might be stuck trying to save, find, or protect them as well. It’ll just add to our duties on the scene….”.

Upon hearing the kind Dwarfs words after helping her(and trying to stay between her and DeMorgan), Daria can't help but feel guilty:
"Ser Thirus, I know and agree with you. I had not suggested we should enter the building right on arrival, just that arriving early would allow us a brief moment to consider our course of action with first-hand information available, while we wait for everyone to catch up. Right now, we know little about the situation except that theres a fire of sorts. Taking a moment to observe and think first before going in may save us, and others, later.
But while I believe Sir Castor and Miss Ophelia know their way around here well enough to know the shortcut I spoke off, you may not, so allow me to stick with you and show you the way."

-with these words, Daria smiles an apology to Ser Thirus and matches his pace.

Speed is a priority yeah? I know my way around the Magowan tenement too and I speak the lingo so I'll stay near the front while we get through there. Sorry Mr.Thirus once I can requisition a wand of longstrider I'll be able to make everyone faster but until then...

Assuming Magowan means from the Mwange expanse and speaking Polyglot will help out

AC drops to 16. Speed goes up to 30

"Yeah! Nobody go in till I get there!" The sergeant yells at departing backs.
Turning to Isama he holds out a wand.
"Quench. Command phrase is 'one-two-seven-seven-four'"

Isama:

@Isama: Tenements tend to be named for local dignitaries, so while it is a Mwange name, there's no guarantee that there's a lot of Polyglot speakers. I like the idea though, so let's say a number of Mwange immigrants have made the same mistake ;)
Also, on that profession roll, I reckon you'd remember that the Sergeant should have a scroll of Phantom Chariot. Expensive though.

As they exit the building, waiting until everybody is ready, and see the roads literally filled with crowds, Daria tugs on Castors Sleeve to draw his attention down to her:
"Sir, might I be so bold to suggest a course of action? In a fictional book I read recently, a police inspector had to go through a crowded marketplace quickly. He used simple magic tricks to great effect in doing so, making people aware of his presence by sound and light so they could better avoid him and clear a path. While it's not a tested system, it's an interesting idea and could be worth a try. If the effect is opposite of what we intend, we could simply dismiss our spells. Unfortunately I am only capable of providing Sounds to this plan, but maybe thats sufficient-"

Possibly, but I suppose that depends on the caster level. Unless it's CL 14 to give it fly it won't be of much use to us.
And then it's 25GPx4(Spell Level)x14(Caster Level) or a 1400GP Scroll we are about to use to cover 1800 feet of legwork/400 ft air distance with a spell lasting 14 hours...not sure if superiors will be happy about this or if thats coming out of OUR budget..., so just following Castor's+Ophelia's lead from discussion as they probably have a better grasp on procedure. Dunno if they realized this possibility though.

Due to the nature of her profession, Constance found herself in emergency situations often and had been forced to prepare in advance for it. Early in her career, she had purchased a Mithral vestment to wear underneath her normal clothes so she could never be caught off guard and to catch off guard any low-level thugs who weren't aware of her reputation. Her Gun and buckler were holstered with leather straps hidden in her jacket for battle-readiness.

It wasn't the time for battle however. Despite that fact, she was glad she had invested in the chain shirt. She couldn't really wear anything fancy or lady-like over it, but she had always been married to her work, which demanded function over fashion.

When they started off, De Morgan followed alongside the wizard and the machine. She knew a shortcut as well, but upon checking with Ms. Hearth, it turned out it had been the same one so she was forced to follow along.

Something hadn't been mentioned, but she knew all her colleagues had been thinking it. Though they may have been hoity-toity and posh, the Sorcière Académie should have had more than enough magical ability to put out a house fire. De Morgan made it a point to remind everyone as they went, "Be on your toes. Anything that messes with stuck up sorcerers like that is bad news. Something stopped them from putting the fire out themselves, and I have a feeling it wasn't just an ooze."

And trying to "sunder" an obstacle:

(Daria can open a lock in a standard action...so instead of smashing down a door in her way with tiny fists, I suppose she would rather try and unlock it/rig it open)
If that won't work(GM decision), she instead tries to bash an obstacle with her bare fists:
Sunder CMB: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

I guess we are on the way
Daria tries, as mentioned, to stick near Castor and maximize the effect they get from their light+sound show, shouting at people to "Please clear the way, there's an emergency! The Guard needs to get through" trying to hide behind her colleagues while doing so(little girl in a dress shouting is probably not very impressive), but not afraid to use her natural agility to her advantage to try and zoom ahead a bit in order to try and get a door open to provide a more direct path.

Yep, but I think you will be at the road block first...so depending where it it, we won't even be able to assist on "clear the road"...it just takes 10 rounds but it's one check.

(Also, even if there were multiple road blocks we COULD clear, I'm not sure it even makes sense from an efficiency standpoint to clear any but the one with you)

But other than that, yeah, I agree, everybody should at least TRY their acrobatics if they can reasonably expect to roll higher than 5...
and everybody in the "middle" team and front team should attempt their sunder to allow the back team to catch up.

Also, naturally, as many "Guard coming through" as reasonable(obviously not every round, but no ultimate limit was given on those)

Guard coming through. 1 only. 48 combined total. 240ft. I should have specified travelling in a group - my bad. Constance draws a firearm and terrified civilians, alterted by the din and alarms, flee to the cover of nearby doorways.
Alley-oop. Opehlia makes up 80ft. Diene makes up 75 ft. Daria makes up 85ft. Constance makes up 25 feet.
Out of my way. Daria ducks ahead, picks the lock on a shop's back door. and leaves it open for her friends behind her (everyone but diene) to run through.
Castor loses 2 half rounds to spellcasting. Sergeant and Isama lose 1 round to item swapping. Daria loses 1 round to spellcasting. Isama decides against stripping down.
Total Times (I have a spreadsheet if anyone wants to see it)

4:18 Thrius

Diene is alone for 1:14. Over the next 24 seconds Ophelia, Daria, Constance and Castor arrive. A bit over a minute later the rest arrive.

Squeeky:

There are a number of people in very fancy robes exiting the front and rear door. There is a lot of funny smelling smoke. The garden looks dry. Over the next little while, in addition to smoke billowing from windows and chimneys, licks of fire start to come out of the bottom windows. The people start arguing. A crowd gathers.

Diene:

Diene leaps over the heads of the gathering crowd, none of whom are actually prepared to cross the cast-iron fence with "Warning: Cursed" signs.
There is a small crowd (20) of people, mostly in courtier's robes and expensive scholar's robes. They appear to be arguing furiously, both with each other, and with a smaller group of eight people over the gate. The smaller group are dressed very differently, and appear to be amused.
Smoke is gushing from the building - mostly from the top, but obviously at all levels. There is some fire coming out of the windows.
As you watch an enterprising group of young people in the small crowd start emptying the garden's decorative well onto the building using their elaborate hats.

Diene: You know you've roughly a minute until anyone catches up to you. What do you want to do?
everyone but Diene:

I'm assuming you are all trying to yell the information between you as best you can. Thrius, Sarge and Isama would have some gaps, especially for the final bits of information.

I guess since you ask Diene what she'll do and we don't get a description, what we see once we arrive depends on that.

Daria'll try and get an overview and then try to get people to search for and direct here Divine Casters with "Create Water" cantrip prepared to support with a bucket chain or watering parts of the garden(if I caught Ophelias info that it's like tinder).

@Diene, if I read that right, you choose to not clear the roadblock? Totally fine, fits the char too, just making sure-

Diene, while showy, doesn't particularly favor property damage, or causing panic to the degree of people stampeding and crushing each other to get out of the way. :P

"Gentlemen*, Ladies*. Guard here, anything special about the situation, or is it just a fire? Also, is anyone still in the building?" Diene approaches the group, asking respectfully.

Meeeeeh, I don't want to start out the day arguing with mages. They'd probably enjoy it...

She scans the building for her own answer to the second question, also looking for doors that are blocked or such that might be preventing people from getting to safety. (Got a Perception 26 way back).

*Presuming there are any of the specified gender.*

Buff list: Mage Armor 59 minutes remaining.

"Good" snorted one of the older men, in one of the more elaborate looking robes.
"Arrest those arsonists!" With this declaration pointing accusingly at the group across the fence.

The group across the fence, who had been highly amused a moment before looked shocked. An older woman stepped forward. She had a wand in a shath

"What? Probably just you sorcerors playing with powers you don't understand!"

The situation looks about to go critical.

"Ladies, Gentlemen." Diene interposes herself between the groups, speaking softly, with a maniacal glint in her eyes. She is also carrying two pieces of wood in her hands. For some reason. Raising them up to her lips, as though it were a megaphone, she yells "IS THERE ANYONE STILL IN THE BUILDING?" Her voice thunders out like the crack of a gun.

"Because no matter how awesome of a mage you THINK you are, the fact that none of you have put out that fire reveals to me that none of you are strong enough to prevent me from pummeling your face into the dirt." Diene pushes the two pieces of wood together in her hands, and presses together, the wood giving way and exploding and cracking in a hail of splinters. "And EVEN if you could beat me, the whole rest of my squad is on the way." Suddenly sidling up to one of the hopefully stunned mages, she gives a conspiratorial style stage whisper, "Some are ALMOST as strong as me."

"So, if you force my hand to CRUSH all of you, and then search that building for any stragglers, either late if their are any or pointlessly endangering my squad if there aren't... THERE WILL BE NO MERCY IN MY FISTS." She let that moment hang in the air.

"But totally, with all the super special awesome mages we have here, shouldn't determining if there's anyone still in the building and putting it out be a cinch, or at least someone be able to explain to me why it isn't? I think that'd be almost as fun for me, and a LOT more fun for ya'll than me introducing you to the more physical applications of human effort and discipline, don't you think?" Diene smiles... cheerily?

Castor advaces more slowly than he would be otherwise able, to keep pace with Sergeant and the new dwarf. He awaits update from his familiar.

Squeeky flies back and locates Castor.

"Mastermaster, Ihaveseenit" the bird chirps loudly while approching the wizard.

"Good, Squeeky, what have you seen?"

"Peopleinfancyrobesexitthebuilding, theyuseboththefrontandreardoor. Funnysmellingsmokeiscomingout. Gardenisdry. Firestartscomingoutofthebottomwindows. Peopleargue. Crowdgathers. Littleredarrivedthere."

"Good boy, here is a treat for you. Fly back and observe what is going on. We should be there in another two minutes. Wait with the update till my arrival unless there is something... dire going on. And as always, be careful." he gives the thrush a treat and turns to his superior.

"You heard Squeeky, Sarge. Looks like we will have our hands full."

Diene:

"While creating fire is trivial, putting it out is more of a divine magic." explains one of the sorcerers "I suppose in theory someone could summon a water elemental, but in practice all the summoners are over in the arena."
Simultaneously another sorceror chimes in over the top "I think this is everyone. The footmen are supposed to escort people out in the event of a fire. Although, they're not allowed in the big circle."
Adding to the cacophony, those across the fence chime, jeering in on the 'super special awesome mages' comment.
Intimidate means you can handle it. When you get back OOC you'll have calmed everyone down

Ophelia, Dara, Constance and Castor, Diene:

Hoarse and puffed four more Guards arrive at the scene, pushing through a crowd that has gathered to see the spectacle.
The building is on fire. Smoke pours from the windows and chimneys, especially on the top floors, and licks of fire come from the lower windows.
Diene stands between approximately 13 figures dressed in a mix of pre-revolutionary galtian courtier's robes and expensive scholar's robes. These argue violently with a group of eight more casually be-robed figures on the other side of a cast-iron fence - though Diene seems to have stopped violence, and is in the presence of calming them down.
7 younger figures in what seem to be the Sorceror's dress have formed a bucket chain from the small decorative garden well. In lieu of buckets they are using elaborate hats. It's having little effect.
Diene calls out quickly "Their summoners are at the arena, and they think everyone has been escorted out - but not the 'big circle'"
Helpfully one of the younger women - a student - adds "That's the room at the top where the big summoning circle is. No-one's allowed in when it is active - too dangerous."
Another adds "I think the Directeur is up there."
Technically you guys arrive in order: are you okay if I lump you together?

Definitely ok for me. Can I apply my Diplomacy check towards those 7 younger figures that formed the laughable bucket chain? Try and convince them to search for and bring here divine casters with create water from wherever nearby or in the crowd there may be any? Reasoning being that even a single low-level caster could apply more water per round than them with their hats, and if more than one of them is successful, or they come across a higher level caster, then the effect will multiply.

Ophelia looked around at the scene as she hurried trough the crowd. She noted the fire, the smoke and most importantly - all the people just milling about. And the 'hat-brigade'. Curious. Silly. Determined?

"Hmm."

The Clockwork hummed, resonating faintly. She steps over/trough the fence and turns back to the crowd.

Taking a look at the tower, De Morgan snorts, "Great. Knowing my luck, the Director will not be getting himself out of there." Turning to the woman who mentioned he would be up there, De Morgan grunts, "How do I get up there? Fastest way."

After talking to Mia a number of the students on the bucket chain bolt off to find divine assistance. One runs off to the arena.

At Ophelia's suggestion the crowd boil through and over the gates. Plants are uprooted and taken - regardless of their health - and quite a few small ornaments go missing in the process. A few members of the crowd get together and start heaving on the thick ivy wrapped around the stones. Small lizards, birds, spiders and unidentifiable invertebrates scuttle down, over and through the crowd, causing screaming and stamping.

The woman talking to DeMorgan looks aghast at the destruction being wrought, as the dark green and brown garden is quickly reduced to so much dirt. "What? The main summoning room? In through the front door, up the stairs. The Alchemy lab is in the basement, reception and the zoo on the ground. Living and study quarters on the next three floors. Practice rooms on he fifth and the Big Circle is on the top floor. The manservants won't let anyone in while there's a fire though."

At the conclusion of this conversation the remainder of the guards arrive.

what they see:

The building is on fire. Smoke pours from the windows and chimneys, especially on the top floors, and licks of fire come from the lower windows.

A mob of citizens has poured into the garden, and are madly tearing up anything plant-like and dragging it away.

yay! Everyone's here.

Male Dwarf (saltbeard) Bloodrager

The stocky dwarf enters the growing commotion around the burning building. It seems somewhat organized, obviously being whipped into shape by the guards. Thirus comes up behind Constance and says to her, "You plan on going instead? Let me help you, it could be dangerous to go alone. I might be useful.". A slight grind of his armor reminds you he is wrapped in inflammable stone.

Is the fire pretty much confined to the building or might it spread to the surroundings?

given what's happened to the yard, there is a negligible chance it will spread in the current conditions. If the wind picks up, or there is an explosion, or the building collapses then it might still spread.

Puffing a little, the Sergeant arrives in time to hear Thirus.
"If anyone's going in to a burning sorcerer academy with an aberration collection, then we're going in together!" he glances over at Diene, who seems to be stemming a magical civil war "Well. Maybe we leave her out here for crowd control." Gives Diene a reason to hold off entry till she's back

Calling everyone together he summarises
"Right. We need to know who's still inside. We need to know if there's anything dangerous inside. We do need to know where the fire started, and if anyone saw what started it - but that can wait. If we need to go in, we need protection from the fire, but more importantly protection from the smoke. Any answers?"

I can make as much water as needed Sir. Isama says as she helps the fire suppression effort by casting Create Water on the walls of the burning building to help keep the flames contained. Can get some water elementals to help with that too inside for a little while if need be so putting out fires ain't a problem. Could also help Diene out with crowd control here if you figure that's more important sir.

Having no answer to either of Seargeant Abels questions, Daria mixes in with the crowd helping to remove the dry shrubbery from the garden, asking one or two people who look like they'd be likely to know of any emerging rumours about whats happening.

"Did anybody see how this started? Who do you think was responsible?"

upon hearing an answer, she'll weave away and ask the same thing once she finds another set of people with a promising candidate, but staying close enough to hear the seargant if the group is going in.

Considering she's just wearing a pretty dress and no uniform, Daria's trying to blend in, act like a curious, precocious(if that is the right word) child from high society.
