Sefu Warlockswalk |

Sefu runs the vampire, attempting to grapple it.
Grapple check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
[b]"Get a stake over here."[b]
Some day I will roll a 20 and then karma be upon you all, also I am going first unless someone wants to fireball it or something.

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

Ophelia looks around for something appropriately pointy to stake the vampire with. And just to be sure no mistakes are made, she gives the corpse a quick second look.
Know(Religion): 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 1 + (3) = 28
Perception: 1d20 + 13 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 13 + (2) = 27
"Perhaps we should be proactive and ready ourselves with stakes before proceeding." she notes neutrally, but inside she is a bit annoyed that she did not think of it earlier.

Castor Drey |

Castor awaits the development...
"So one of them has not been merely dead after all."
...and makes sure the team defences are still working. He points the wand at the sergeant and releases the protection spell.

Darkest Corners GM |
The sergeant did cut two stakes in the previous room. Laurestine you can grab one of those.
While the room is narrow I'm happy for one other person other than Sefu to engage if you like.

Sergeant Abel Valdemar |

The Sergeant hands out a stake to Ophelia and Laurestine, then digs into a sheathe and pulls out the wand of gentle repose issued by the city.
see here
"Do you have this?" he asks of the team, unable to get closer to Sefu's struggle.
Players are up

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

"There is a small chance they are infected and only just now starting to reanimate. If so, we might need more stakes ..."
The clockwork does sound mildly alarmed by the possibility, but not overly so. The odds of every corpse reanimating at the same time where astronomically small after all. Instead she focused on the task-at-hand and tumbled towards the vampire, trying to squeeze past Sefu and it to get into a staking position.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + (3) = 12
Stake attack roll: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
One point of inspiration spent

Castor Drey |

Castor points the wand at Laurestine and sends the spell her way.
Then he looks at the wand seargant is holding. "I guess not, sir. But I do not think it will help us at the moment. Unless we plan to be here longer than strictly neccessary, the decomposing of bodies should not be a problem."

Darkest Corners GM |
Ophelia and Sefu struggle with the vampire
Ophelia; roll damage please. Vampire is not staked.
Driving a wooden stake through a helpless vampire spawn's heart instantly slays it (this is a full-round action).
You're going to need to make it helpless. Despite the normal rules these are recently turned noncombatants so I am happy for a pinned Vampire to be considered helpless for the purposes of being staked.

Sefu Warlockswalk |

Sefu attempts to disable the creature further. Im trying to pin it.
grapple: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Well its above 10......
Struggling with the creature Sefu moves onto it and pushes it down, trying to let Ophelia get a clear stake.
"Hurry, before it gets its wits about it."

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

Unfazed by the small splash of blood and gore resulting from her previous attempt, Ophelia tries to pierce the heart of the vampire once more. She gives it a cold calculating glance and ponders over the optimal angle of attack.
"Hold him still." she commands as she rams the sharpened table leg into the body of the creature.
To Stake: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Move action to study vampire, standard to stake if possible. If it takes a full round, subtract 2 from my roll :)
Edit: Hmm. Sefu might wanna watch his hands there :P

Castor Drey |

Castor steps into the room and casts the protection spell on Ophelia.
"Good idea, sir. At least we will not have to worry about any unexpected newly risen undead attacking our backs."

Darkest Corners GM |
After consulting a fellow GM:
Staking a vampire is a full round action that appears to be a specialised type of coup de gras.
As such no attack roll is necessary.
It is normally only possible to coup de gras a helpless opponent.
Pinning does not render someone helpless.
In this case I have ruled that special circumstances means that this pinned vampire is helpless for the purpose of staking.
I'm ephasising this because normally you would need render a vampire helpless before using this attack.

Darkest Corners GM |
sorry, was worried I was setting a precedent...
As Ophelia's stake once more slams into the Vampire's chest it shudders once, and goes limp. Once more it resembles little more than a dead corpse.
Laurestine waits by K10, but hears nothing through the door.
The Door is intricately carved, but quite solid. It opens out into this room.

Sergeant Abel Valdemar |

The Sergeant quickly uses the wands on the bodies. He stops briefly at the second
"Mera" he says, sadly, "We were in a squad together..." shaking his head he is again all business "No time for that. They've stripped her - that means there's a second set of wands somewhere."
"We're burning up charges on Castor's wand. If they're starting to wake up, we need to move."
Looking around he orders Laurestine "Bar the door, then take the others and go check up these stairs. As soon as I'm done here I'll join you."
"Ophelia; take point, they don't seem as keen on attacking you."

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

So no more pin -> stake ?=) I can live with that!
"Affirmative. The freshly spawned might be driven by hunger - and I am unappetizing when one carves blood."
She lingers for a moment, watching the sergeant. Is this what loss looks like ? A corpse crushing the dreams of finding your missing alive. So sad ... The clockwork shakes her head and heads over towards the stairs.

Sefu Warlockswalk |

So we can just make stakes it seems.....
"Should I go make some more stakes? We are out."
Sefu makes to head back but waits for the affirmative of his sergeant.
How can we make them helpless so they are stake-able? Apart from them sleeping I mean.

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

That is indeed a good question! The only way we posses right now that I can think of is beat them senseless and find their coffins :)

Darkest Corners GM |
These stairs ascend, as far as you can see, up to the top floor of the building. The boards of the stairs are beautifully constructed of beautiful hardwood, and make not a noise as you climb.
It is thus with some surprise that you reach the first landing and your party runs into a crowd descending just as quietly on the stairs.
Four individuals are descending, three armed with makeshift clubs. The last, at the back, does not have a club but does have the now-all-too-familiar red eyes.
Other than those eyes, all four people have the look of customers and craftsmen.
Init and marching order please - assuming Ophelia is at the front.
init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
initv: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
not sure how to describe or map this elegantly. The stairs are five feet wide but you can move through each other's spaces. They're enclosed wooden versions of this. Each landing leads to a floor.
for this fight basically marching order is the important thing. Only the people at the front of each group are going to be in melee, with people in the second square able to use reach weapons and behind that using range.
I'm going to ignore the normal 5ft rules a little: The stairs are 15x15+5x10, so I'm going to treat them as a line 8 squares long.
At the moment Ophelia, Sefu, Castor and Laurestine take up 4 of those squares. The 4 people who're coming down occupy the others.
Anyone in a middle square can move onto the floor. I've indicated this with an asterisk.
So, from top of stairs to bottom (remembering higher ground grants an advantage):

Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 In a tie, the one with the highest modifier goes first - but for ease of flow, perhaps the foes can all act first? Unless someone of us beat their initiative of course!
"Trouble." Ophelia exclaims as she nears the end of the stairs.

Castor Drey |

Castor aimed the wand at Sefu and fired the spell, so everybody was protected again. Then he followed the others up the stairs.
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
I presume Castor would be the last one up the stairs as he is no front fighter.
Regarding them being helpless - if they are new vampires, they do not have any coffins yet, right? So how does that work?

Darkest Corners GM |
Castor: wow. That is one heck of an init.
What an interesting question for Castor to be asking himself :)
Vampires without a coffin (or similar) should lose access to the power to return to it.
The acquisition of a coffin would likely be a very high priority for any educated and free willed vampire.

Sefu Warlockswalk |

Sefu says to Ophelia "What is it?"
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Sefu would probably be just behind Ophelia or at the very back as he is good at melee and has a gun. He would be just behind Ophelia.

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale |

"Magical compulsion - most likely"
The clockwork swivels a bit to the side to give Sefu a decent view of the oncoming civilians with clubs.
Know(Religion): 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (11) + 7 + (1) = 19
There was *something* about vampires and carpentry she ought to remember - she knew she had seen it in Walters book. But now wasn't really the moment to look it up ...

Castor Drey |

Religion is one of the knowledges Castor does not have :-(
The initiative is great, I am just not sure what to do with it in this case...

Round 1. Sefu and Castor; you're up.
You can see Ophelia has run into a crowd on the stairs. Ranged attacks are fine, the people ahead of you have +4 AC from cover, though.
At the moment they haven't taken hostile action.
The people are being mind-controlled

Laurestine Valerian |

"They are being mind-controlled. As for a coffin, they lose access to return to it. Or if they never had one, anyway. If they were free-willed and smart enough they would want one as soon as they could obtain it." says Laurestine as she holds her sword in a readied stance.

Castor Drey |

Round 1
"This will be interesting. And that might be an understatement"
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
"These people are controlled by the beast in the back - again. Be careful, where you step, slippery when wet..." Castor informs his fellow guards, fishes out a piece of butter from his pouch, waves a hand at the oncoming enemies and utters "Lubrico!"
As an afterthought, he adds "Oh, do not hesitate to tell me when you want the stairs de-greased again."
Casting Grease at the squares with the closest two persons, DC 16. Too bad Protection from Evil is creature touched only, but Castor would not want to be front line just to have an opportunity to cast it.
Laurestine, it might be a good idea to roll for initiative before declaring actions ;-)

The stairs suddenly become inexplicably shiny. The person closest to Ophelia slips and falls prone. The person behind them manages to catch themselves on the rail.
Sefu: you're up

Darkest Corners GM |
Sefu loads his gun
"If you could move to the side a little Ophelia I can shoot past you."Loading the gun is a full round action!!!
It is, but I'm happy to say you have it loaded if you like. I realise historical accuracy suggests it might not yet be loaded, but I'm happy to ignore that for now. If you like you can have used a wax seal to keep the powder dry and the ball in position.

"Kill the clockwork! Capture the rest!" The Vampire shrieks, scuttling up the side of the wall and on to the cieling like a twisted spider.

The spell should distract the pawns - best to deal with the king! Springing into action, the clockwork stabs at the vampire with her longspear. Whirling gears, iron tendons and unwinding springs propels the pointed weapon upwards with significant force and mechanical precision.

Castor Drey |

How high is the ceiling above the stairs? Could an enlarged person grapple the vampire?

Castor Drey |

And what would happen if Sefu got enlarged - would he fit on the stairs / Castor is intelligent enough to recognize this immediatelly, I am not :-)

Castor takes out a scroll, points at Sefu and mutters "Homo Amplio".
