DM Vord's Zeitgeist Act I - Portents of a Starry Sky

Game Master Vorduvai

"Times are turning. The skyseers – Risur’s folk prophets since their homeland’s birth – witness omens in the starry wheels of heaven, and they warn that a new age is nigh. But what they cannot foresee, hidden beyond the steam and soot of the night sky, is the face of this coming era, the spirit of the age. The zeitgeist."

Sounds good to me. Now we'd just have to get agreement from every one and set up teams real quick.

If we do a mad dash, Anneca can lock the door behind them If we go this way, Anneca will cast expeditious retreat and shield while on the move.

I think we just try to get to the first sentry as quickly and stealthily as possible and not split up.

We just need to take out the three rebels in front of us so we can get into the lighthouse structure.

I'll cast one or both silence spells as needed on our way.

Wow, that was a combined set of blasts for 34hp. Well that's the sad end of Rebel Patrolman #4!

So initiatives and actions (standard or move) for Gemma, Johnathan and Ifris to end the surprise round.

Are we staying in Initiative? A double move can get us to about 20' past the now-dead guard, between the barrels. I plan on having her cast a scroll of expeditious retreat during the next round, then catching up with the others.

Just throwing this over here so I don't muck up your in-game flow of the combat there with my answers. Ya we are going to stay in combat from this point forward - the team's silence is a fine idea but the actions are not completely unnoticed by all enemies. So at this point its going to get more and more interesting, and we'll be going into Round 1 as soon as I have some time to lay it out tonight for the gang to chew on for the weekend.

So I think we have all initiatives except for Ifris and an Ifris profile, correct?

More like 3.0;

2.0 = Robert's
2.5 = Back to GM NPC

Sounds good.

Hmm...well on the skiff there's one patrolman behind some barrels which would provide cover, though the other guy next to the tarp doesn't have cover. No other patrolmen by gaslamps have cover yet, though the gaslamp posts "could" provide cover if they put it between you and them in a future round.

Male

Greetings Xynen, Feth and Songdragon! I'm very excited to have you on-board! Please feel free to chat with the players on anything you'd like to know from them...or just chat with no particular purpose in mind that's fine too...whatever suits your fancy there! As always you can ask me any questions here in the Discussion section and/or PM me as you prefer.

Okay, let's see here...lots to do this week. Though work is pretty heavy for me this week, I'm looking to get a shiny new "intro" post for the three new characters on Thursday or Friday this week. This will be slightly back in time (approx. 18 hours) relative to where the other characters are currently, with the intention to merge the groups together fairly soon when it makes sense...and it will help if the other characters on-mission actually manage to "win" and complete their mission of opening the Axis sea gate!

Now to do all of that, I'll need for the three characters to be fully ready to rock. Pulling from my earlier statements on the Recruitment post (in italics below, I'm going to expand on them a bit...

Player Stuff to Do Before the Intro Posts
* Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the Zeitgeist Extended Players Guide, as well as the game’s Campaign Info tab.
I think you three have probably already done that pretty well already, given the questions I had from you on character creation and your excellent background/history. I'll be working on adding your info to the tab of course, as well as some R.H.C. NPC's that may be relevant to the game start.

* Read the Gameplay posts from beginning to current. Yes, all of them. Your character will (mostly) know the events that have occurred in the game to the point they join the story.
So this will be a bit of a challenge perhaps, but I think it will really help for all three of you to have the proper context with the "feel" of R.H.C. personalities and politics, not to mention that there are a few Slate Branch NPC constables your characters would know as professional colleagues (or at least as passing acquaintances).

* Tailor your Ten-Minute Background to match your character’s story placement as a R.H.C. Slate or possibly R.H.C. Bole constable, with roughly 3-5 years in the R.H.C. at that position.
Let me elaborate on this a bit. So when the campaign was created I had the original characters as newly-appointed "associate" constables of Flint Branch, having them deal with the politics and biases of the other "senior" constables in Flint Branch. For the past two years (498-99 A.O.V) the R.H.C. moved from an "apprentice-and-mentor" based training system to a more program-based selection and training system out of Flint Branch, whereupon final selection and appointment the constables either stay in Flint or are transferred to other branches based on need. Unfortunately, I already identified the NPC's from the "four-double-nines" and "four-nine-eights" that joined from this newer process and wrote the story interactions that way. I ALSO fully identified all the R.H.C. Constables of Flint Branch. So as new characters needed to join I had to have them from the other branches - Slate, Bole or Shale. Unfortunately in the storyline, Shale Branch has been overrun with the rebellion and the constables there mostly killed, with only a few survivors. So that rules out both Flint and Shale Branch for your characters to start in as your assigned branch.

This is why I'm asking for you three to fit your characters in as constables with "some" experience, joining anywhere from 495-97 A.O.V. under the more traditional method. That means you have experience, but are not so experienced as to be senior constables with higher levels! Slate Branch is THE premier branch of the R.H.C., where the Director and most experienced teams reside, but is also the most political with many constables waiting longer to bide their time and get real missions under their belt. Bole Branch is smallest and is seen mostly as the place where troublesome constables go to languish, or older constables go to retire, as Bole has been a sleepy area for decades or more now. Either can work if you fit the theme a bit - the recent events of the rebellion will force all constables from Slate and Bole to be active, so we can make it work.

Please ask me any questions on this as you decide - the intro post will assume your PC is in Slate or in the vicinity, working R.H.C. business already. Oh and for those of you that have character ties to Flint, just make sure you started there but got transferred to another branch - after the first module is completed there will be a two-month "interlude" where we'll make sure your characters are transferred to Flint Branch in a way that makes sense, so no worries there.

* Get your PC to 2nd Level and gear up accordingly, using the specifics of wealth and stipend allowances that R.H.C. constables are provided.
I believe this is mostly done for each of you, but if you haven't "requisitioned" your gear yet, you get your class max. starting wealth + 1000gp. You also get an "average cost-of-living" income level from the CRB, which allows you to have a modest private dwelling in a modest part of the city you work at, eat and drink, hand-waive minor gear under 1gp, etc. Because you can "turn-in" gear in good condition back to the R.H.C. quartermaster's offices for full value, there's little reason for you to hold onto much spare wealth for your PC. Obviously consumables aren't automatically replenished, but stipend increases come regularly enough in the modules that you should be fine.

* Familiarize yourself with how combats are run in this game – you’ll need to post actions with a round-by-round statblock, and I place more emphasis on players being able to post their successes/failures in combat (as opposed to doing a GM round summary of all actions).
Interestingly enough the existing group is going into a combat right now, and will be in one for some time, so lots of examples! I would like for your PC's Race field to have the essentials populated - an example is: Human (Risuri) Bard (Sandman) 1st AC 14/12/12 / HP 9 / F +1 R +4 W +3 / Init. +2 / Perc. +7 / Sense Motive +3. In addition you can see that we track the current status of characters in your combat posts, including effects/conditions you may have going, current HP's, etc. It's really a good idea to have your combat stat block for your PC saved in a doc so that you're not trying to type it out fresh every time. Anything I can help you with on that, let me know.

What I'll Be Doing Before the Intro Posts
* I need to get the Campaign Info Tab updated with your PC's, as well as put in some relevant R.H.C. NPC's from each of your backgrounds.
* I want to put in a small history section in Campaign Info Tab that helps to clarify some of the more recent historical events, plus will show the major events of the PC's as things move along (with links for easy reference).
* Writing portions of the intro post that's coming when the three of you are ready to go.
* Assisting you with anything you need!
* Attempting to kill/capture the other PC's on Axis...err...continuing the storyline of the current timeline!

I'll get to work on tailoring my 10 minute background. Since my character is part of the Slate branch I think she and Willem should know each other, at least in passing. Willem, what do you think?

I have not specificcally looked up any of the other characters' backgrounds yet as try to get through some of my 'required' reading (page 11! :))

Jesselle grew up in Flint, her family having some minor/medium wealth, she was sent a private school. After school she worked for Barrister in flint (a place some of her skills were realized and grew) before joining the campaign of one of those running for one of the district mayors. Which caught the eye of an undercover RHC constable was how she tracked down (not alone) those responsible for election fraud. She joined the RHC soon after. Many months of probie work she was recruited by the Slate office for an undercover operation. And mainly through patience and persistence was she literally handed all the damning evidence she needed. Jesselle is currently outside of Slate, waiting for her next assignment/orders.

If anyone has ideas and wishes to know of Jesselle, let me know.

Jesselle is level 2 and has gear updated. Other than some reading, she is good to go.

Hey Tobias! Yeah, that sounds good as far as the Battalion connection. She's the youngest constable of the group but I don't think that will be an issue meshing the backgrounds.

Just a note here - different academies in different cities. The Banhaman Academy in Slate is the more prestigious martial academy for elites and non military martial science disciplines, whereas the Battalion Academy outside of Flint is almost entirely devoted to military officer training. That being said, there's a lot of crossover between the academies, so if each of you had theses (Tobias does I know) then you might have read each other's work. You both would also know Ifris Lanvaldans thesis from Battalion and rumors about her unique psychic armor/weapon manifestation abilities.

Hey Greg. Not to tell you what to do but I think you could have Ifris charge the guy on Gemma. If I'm not mistaken, she's just in range with her enhanced movement.

I believe the DM will allow that one diagonal step as the path is not blocked and you have line of sight. Is that right DM sir?

Emerson Hill wrote:

Hmmm...well as much as I'm a fan of Ifris "All Business" Lanvaldan, I'd have to rule that won't work for her. For one, she can't see him in the darkness he's in - only Gemma and the elemental can see him, and Emerson reasonably suspects what space he's in but cannot see him. Also, that corner of AB11-12 & AC12 is too severe to jaunt around in a charge or run action (for example you can't cut diagonal across the corner of the seawall with a railing, or diagonal through barrels).

So Ifris is going to have to go for Round 2 glory in some other fashion there!

EDIT: Oh and just to be clear when I have to move him, the earth elemental is still moving to attack the declared patrolman that Johnathan is now engaged on, correct?

Don't worry about me:)
Gemma's got this! I'll just try to get the guy to slip in my blood so he goes prone and doesn't have reach!
Man, between crap initiative and criticals it's not so good for me so far.

Feth, Songdragon and Xynen: Since we’re not having an online quiz or anything like that for when you are ready to go, I thought today that it would be a better idea if you started the game with your own intro! Below is some background for each of your characters in where they are starting off on 12 Spring and what has happened to them recently – please feel free to ask me any follow-up questions in Discussion or PM if/as needed. At this point the final final “gear” selection for your PC’s are not necessary to get going in gameplay, though it’s better to get that done sooner rather than later if you agree.

For your posts I would like for you to use “Flex Time” ooc-tagged headers that I’ve provided in your individual spoilers below, as you are about 20 hours back in time from where the other 4 PC/2 NPC constables are currently – you’re each starting at dawn of 12 Spring, whereas the current timeline is in the pre-dawn hours of 13 Spring. So I’m giving you an “interesting day” on 12 Spring that will change your lives forever (muhahahahaha….haaa…)!

Constable Jesselle Wesmere:

12 Spring, 500 A.O.V. – early dawn
Swaying Willows Inn (near towns of Avrasford and Cagan’s Crossing)

Jesselle has been sent to this serene and relaxing locale since 88 Winter, 499 A.O.V., having completed her long-term Tier II mission successfully (coded formally as Second Tier Verdant Seer with Staff on Bars Crossed) and sent by Chief Inspectress Emilia Hart to recuperate, regain her “true self” apart from Harriot Wells and lay low from remnants of Mr. Verlinn’s criminal organization that might try to seek revenge upon her. The inn is roughly an hour away from the capital city of Slate to the south, in pastoral country a couple miles and across the river from two larger commercial towns (Avrasford, Cagan’s Crossing) and a major crossroads for caravan traffic between the four major cities of Risur. The grounds and gardens are nice, though the willow trees on the banks of the Yeresi River are leafless and dormant in this time of Winter and early Spring. The three-story inn is warm and cozy, suited to those of more means and wealth than most, with several finely furnished sitting rooms and a well-stocked library room, as well as the more lively common room for patrons. Jesselle has no minders here, though she knows the proprietors are vetted by the R.H.C. and are experienced with keeping cover for R.H.C. constables during their stay. Jesselle has no word yet of when she is to be expected back to full-time duty in Slate Branch. Of course she has heard the news of the attempted assassination of King Aodhan by his own sister, Duchess Ethelyn of Shale, and the subsequent fall of Shale City and the looming civil war. Yet she has not received word from the R.H.C. on any details “Sealed to the Constabulary” or really any news from the R.H.C. at all, which is somewhat disconcerting.

Constable Fethryth Teldanona:

12 Spring, 500 A.O.V. – early dawn
Madsen’s Farmstead (northern outskirts of Slate City)

Fethryth was at Slate Branch when word of the attempted assassination of King Aodhan and the sabotage of the Coaltongue came in by the morning of 2 Spring, as well as the fall of Shale and the horrific loss of so many constables from Shale Branch. Taking her assignments and briefings often from Assistant Chief Inspector James Sutton on lesser domestic missions (Tier III and some Tier II) he presides over (as his boss Emilia Hart presides over the greater Tier I domestic assignments), she nevertheless felt she had a good rapport with her superiors and a strong showing of her accomplishments in Slate Branch – most notably her successful mission last Summer and Fall seasons to take down Voresh Kortel’s smuggling enterprise in the capital city (coded as Second Tier Verdant Seer with Staff on Horizontal Bars), with some ties to some outfit called “The Family” in Flint City passed along the chain of command there. Fethryth therefore fully expected to be part of ACI Sutton’s strike team on the rescue mission to save surviving Shale Branch captives on the night of 4 Spring, but to her surprise was not picked by him; the Yerasol “war hero” and “four-nine-eight” second-year constable Anya Landreth of the King’s Bodyguards was hand-picked as his second, with other constables from both Slate and Flint Branches arriving to fill the highly desired Tier One Sable Dragon missions! Instead, Fethryth on 4 Spring was unceremoniously subjected to an unexpected and harsh debriefing by Chief Inspector Spencer Hopkins: on her knowledge of Constable Makala Fileccia’s murder in Flint (which she only knew Makala was to join Resilience as most constables did), her “ties” to the eladrin terrorist Gale Soliogn of the Cloudwood and any ties to fey terrorists in Flint (which she has none), her knowledge of one eladrin female rebel assassin “Sorkana Dell” (whom she doesn’t know) and Fethryth’s own ties to any eladrin or fey sympathizers supporting the Duchess (of which she has none). Despite having knowledge of nearly none of this, Inspector Hopkins had her immediately sent afterwards to a secure R.H.C. “safe house” farmstead on the outskirts of Slate along with a three-man “minder” squad of Risuri First Army elite soldiers (two footmen rank and one corporal rank who normally guard the Slate Branch fortress), and told to wait there until further orders arrived from Slate Branch. She has been there now for eight long days, discarded aside to languish in obscurity and unjustified suspicion, while the civil war goes on around her.

Constable Tobias Utegg:

12 Spring, 500 A.O.V. – early dawn
Residence of Constable Utegg, Southshore District, Slate City

It’s just another day for Tobias as he wakes up at his usual living quarters inside the capital city of Slate. Just another day, that is, in the face of an attempted fratricide and civil war, with most of the constables of Slate Branch now away on First Tier assignments in either Shale or abroad, leaving just a few constables to carry the remainder of the assignment load. Both elite teams under Chief Inspector Spencer Hopkins – Indefatigable and Resilience – have been deployed on missions to Shale and beyond Risur’s borders respectively. The days have been long and hectic – mostly short Tier II/III missions running down leads on possible rebel plots inside of Slate or dispelling false leads on such – as well as coordinating with Bole Branch constables who are actively working the smaller towns and countryside of Risur to ensure safety and loyalty. Tobias normally takes his assignments and daily briefings with Assistant Chief Inspector James Sutton, but since 4 Spring the ACI has been away on missions in or around the rebel-held city of Shale, so Tobias currently reports in to Chief Inspectress Emilia Hart with the three other remaining constables (Kurbar Danst, new “four-double-nine” transfer Francis Kane, one other older long-timer), though Inspectress Hart herself is now often in the field to help cover local assignments. Tobias rarely sees Director Price-Hill or Assistant Director Cyneburg around the fortified branch compound these days with all that is going on at Torfield Palace, Cloverdelve Circle and elsewhere. It appears that 12 Spring will be another busy day, with no outstanding assignments at this point (though probably a lot of reports to write and file from previous short-duration assignments he’s completed over the past several days).

Posted for the earth elemental. Unfortunately no critical but nice damage non the less!

Well I'm sure you can find something fun to do with her on Round 2...I think the only thing with Ifris, despite all of her psionic skills, is that she's mostly melee-dependent without much ranged option. Not that ranged attack is really her style anyway...

Yeah, the only range weapon she really has are grenades.

Yep when you're ready, go for it from Jesselle's perspective on the early morning of 12 Spring! No spoiler tags needed, just the ooc header of time and place so that it's clear we're in a different thread from the main (combat) one going on.

Sorry Gang - I'm going to have to figure out how to revamp the current Campaign Info Tab and potentially put the NPC's on a different alias I can link. Tonight I just realized as I was fleshing out descriptions for NPC's that the bottom-most text was getting auto-cut/deleted in the process, so I've lost all my info on Shale and Bole Branch NPC's. Really ticked about that, as there's no warning from the board when saving this. Anyway, I'll need to get this straightened out for you soon, once I figure out how I'm going to reorganize it.

I've been out all day so I only just saw this. I'll get my first post up tomorrow, I'm very excited about it!

Sorry Gang - I'm going to have to figure out how to revamp the current Campaign Info Tab and potentially put the NPC's on a different alias I can link. I hear you GM Vord, lost many minutes and hours because of that. Yeah, believe or not, they do have a word limit. Ran into that in another game. Last night, I did hours of work on another game and the laptop I own does not issue any warning to battery status and does not shut down when nearing battery is out of power so kind of know where you coming from.

I do all my work in Google Docs after losing too much of my work to various snafus. I highly recommend it, the auto-save feature is a lifesaver.

Hey Tobias! I've been trying to think of a possible tie in for your character and Gemma and I think I've finally figured it out. With Tobias being from Slate area and the Banhaman Academy and Gemma never being out of Flint and from the Battalion Academy, we may have only passing familiarity. I'd be willing to say that Gemma would have written to the other undergrads at other branch academies asking about their Martial Scientist interest. I could see her wanting to reach out for information sharing. Since Martial Scientists can share fighting styles, she would want to know what's out there. I'm going to say her thesis isn't complete. She was allowed to "put it on hold" for a year because she wanted to see how her ideas would play out in the real world first. Thoughts?

I like that idea. With Gemma's focus on martial prowess and Tobias' on subterfuge, they could easily have established a dialogue about their different techniques. Maybe over the last year or so they could have been discussing ways to synergize their styles out in the field? When finally on assignment together it could give them a chance to put their theories to test, really play up the scholar aspect of the martial scientist and potentially give us a reason down the line to learn any tricks from each other.

That's pretty cool. Also it would make sense since she doesn't really like us all anyway.

Just a heads up, my posting will be sporadic until Christmas is over. I have a lot going on this week that is eating up my free time. I'll post when I have a chance, it will just take me longer than usual.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Nice job Songdragon and Xynen! I had written those scenes for you with the caveat that I wasn't exactly sure how to get you all into the game parlor so that you could, you know, all talk to each other and all, but here you just rolled with it and set it better than I could have!

I know Feth's posting is going to be light with the holidays at the end of this week and such, but I'll wait to move you along until Fethryth gets into the room with a post there, and in the meantime if you want to converse please do so at your leisure. I do have time to write both tonight and tomorrow night if/as things develop for either or both groups.

EDIT: In other news I'm continuing to work on descriptions for NPC R.H.C. members in my new linked alias, and on the main campaign info tab I'm going to get some sort of 'historical events' section going that adds in some more relevant Risuri and R.H.C. references.
