Certainly these could work...but an old halfing trick may be worth the same. Little bags of flour that burst open when they hit your target. There are several problems through...doesn't last long, and it is rather hard to hit an invisible moving target...though if you could get them before-hand...

sorry, still working on level 3, and purchase list.

Upon returning to the shrine, Valeron promptly heads to Arael, to whom he courteously bows.

"We struck a solid blow to the Bastards today, a dozen tieflings were slain for their crimes against Westcrown thanks to the efforts of our six valiant warriors." He uses the term warrior loosely here, intending it to also include Wart and Addie.

"Once rested, we shall return tomorrow to ensure the sewers are clear." After stating this, Valeron glances to the others, realizing that they had yet to form a plan, hoping this is indeed everyone else's wishes.

Arael smiles, having heard the news of the groups success versus the Bastards of Erebus, "Excellent news, my friend. Though they may not know of it fully as of yet, the people of Westcrown thank you all."

A look of disappointment crosses Arael's face, "Unfortunatly, my brother, our faith has been outlawed in Cheliax since the rise of the House of Thrune. I could take a guess at who ranks highest amongst us. Mind you, it would only be a guess, but I would say Pellius Wintrish."

You've heard of him before, but had no idea that he was a priest of Iomedae. You thought he was a merchant in the Crown Sector.

Assuming Addie can scrape together another 80 gp from the sale of the tieflings' equipment...

During her shopping trip with Valeron, Addie purchases two arcane scrolls - one bearing the spell that allows the caster to see invisible creatures, and one bearing the spell to conjure a cloud of glittering gold dust.

"I will study these spells today to try to add them to my repertoire," Addie tells Valeron. "If we can spare an extra day before we return to the Bastards' hideout, I can scribe these spells onto scrolls of my own. Or, at least I could - if the group could loan me the funds to purchase the necessary scribing supplies."

Addie will spend 300 gp to buy two arcane scrolls bearing the 2nd level spells See Invisibility and Glitterdust. That afternoon, she will spend four hours (2 hours per spell) conducting a mystical ritual to teach the spells to His Lordship. After the ritual, the scrolls will be destroyed. Addie can then prepare those spells the following day if the group returns to battle the Bastards. If the group can wait another day (and if someone can loan her the money to buy scribing supplies) Addie can prepare scrolls of See Invisibility and Glitterdust, and still have her daily slots open to prepare other 2nd level spells.

Wart wakes up, and stretches while yawning. His hair is a mess. He adjusts his clothes, and pads into the small room behind the altar, to his makeshift work area.

He gets out his kit, and starts mixing extracts and bombs. Making extracts and bombs for the day, Wart is pleasantly surprised to make an extract of his new formula, ant haul, and figures out how to make more potent bombs. He also makes two identify extracts, one of disguise self, and one last one of true strike. He also brews another dexterity affecting mutagen.

He pulls out his two scrolls and studies them, in an attempt to master them quickly.

Afterwards, he takes two extracts, and the chain shirt from Whitechin, and the ring from the previous night, and goes to find Black Addie.

Morning Adalyn, could you please assist me in identifying these items?

Identifying session here

Shaking his head, Wart bows slightly.

Thank you. Don't forget to eat this morning before you go out to the Ink Merchants.

Wart walks over to the main area, and finds Arael.

Morning! Sorry to be a bother so early, but I have a request. Could you help me by making a potion for me? I have the materials here, and I would like you to make this potion of the spell commonly known as Enlarge Person. Could you do that for me while we go take care of these Bastards?

Thanking him, Wart takes his leave. He retires to his bunk, and goes about cleaning himself, and preparing for the day. Sharpening his blade, counting how many silver coins he has to use as ammunition, he finshes his preparations, and lays out his gear to put on in a heartbeat's notice, checking for any damaged clothes or equipment. Still wearing his "normal clothes", Wart goes to look about the building and grounds, looking for Fiosa, but also exploring the temple.

The next morning before we take on the Bastards again

Wart positively squeeks, and excitedly adds another formula to his book.

He goes about freshening his bombs, and makes an extract of Shield, Ant Haul, True Strike, Disguise Self, and Expeditious Retreat.

While the others go about selling items and preparing trick for their trek back into the "Bastards"' layer, Bron spends that time checking up on Patch-eye, making sure he is well tended for before training and mentally preparing himself for re-entering the sewers.

Call it 60%.

Grand Lodge

Wart successfully identifies the chain shirt and ring as a chain shirt +1 and a ring of protection +1

Arael is a man of his word, you supply the materials, and he will do the labor intensive portion of creating the potion.

Bron, you find that Patch-Eye has been well cared for, though maybe not fully to your exacting standards, he is certainly no worse for wear.

From the sale of the remaining loot, everybody gets 92 gp. That does not include the +1 chain shirt (which Kev is taking) or the +1 ring of protection. There is also Kev's old +1 ring which he put into the pot in exchange for the +1 chain shirt. There was some debate as to whether Addie or Wart would take the ring, so now there are two.

Male Halfling Alchemist : 4

does that include the +1 small chain shirt that Wart just identified?[I was hoping to take that and throw my small leather armor into the pot to help out.

Not strictly true, Morghrim has damage reduction he just rarely bothers with it. Profile is mostly correct now, ready and willing.

During her shopping trip with Valeron, Addie purchases two arcane scrolls - one bearing a spell that allows the caster to see invisibile objects or creatures, and one bearing a spell that conjures a cloud of glittering gold dust.

Back at the shrine of Aroden, Addie secludes herself in a quiet location with His Lordship in order to teach the new spells to the cat. Using a piece of chalk, the young witch inscribes a circle on the stone floor, and places eight candles around the perimeter of the circle - one at each of the cardinal directions, and one at each of the mid-points between the cardinal directions. The large black cat steps within the circle and sits before the western candle, his tail twitching slightly. Addie steps within the circle and sits before the eastern candle. She carefully lights the candles, starting with the northernmost candle and ending with the southernmost candle. With the circle complete, the candle flames flare with a golden radiance - the same radiance emanating from His Lordship's eyes.

Sitting before her His Lordship, Addie takes out the scroll bearing the spell that allows the caster to see invisibile objects or creatures, and tears the scroll into eight pieces. With each piece of the scroll, she picks up one of the candles and uses it to light the strip of parchment on fire, letting the ash fall into a small ritual bowl placed between herself and her familiar. Once all of the strips are burned, she takes out a small knife and - whispering a brief but heartfelt prayer to The Gentleman - cuts her palm, letting a few drops of blood mix with the ash in the bowl. His Lordship laps up the blood and ash mixture, his eyes glowing ever brighter.

(Addie prays to The Gentleman to cast Guidance on herself. DC 17 Spellcraft check to teach See Invisibility to His Lordship: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 1 = 17)

Addie repeats the same ritual with the scroll bearing the spell to conjure a cloud of gold dust. (Addie prays to The Gentleman to cast Guidance on herself. DC 17 Spellcraft check to teach Glitterdust to His Lordship: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 1 = 17)

Once the rituals are complete, Addie extinguishes the candles - starting with the southernmost candle and ending with the northernmost candle - and wipes away the chalk circle. Exhausted by the four-hour ritual, the young witch grabs a quick dinner and turns in early to gather her strength for the impending ordeal of the next day.

Addie may not have had the time and materials to scribe additional scrolls, but she was successful in teaching two new spells to His Lordship from the scrolls she purchased, and is ready to tackle the Bastards of Erebus.

Well before dawn Addie awakens and spends an hour simply staring into His Lordship's golden eyes, communing with the spirit of her mysterious patron. At the end of the hour, she takes out her mother’s ancient Harrow deck, draws a single card, and studies it intently for several moments.

Addie uses her Harrowed feat for the day. Suit drawn: 1d6 ⇒ 2 (Attribute: Constitution); card drawn: 1d9 ⇒ 4 (The Brass Dwarf: The Brass Dwarf shows an azer who represents invulnerability to a current danger. Although others might fall, he remains hale and strong. The Brass Dwarf can also mean a failure or dark fate for one, which in turn might save all others around him from a greater danger.)

"A card of questionable portent," Addie thinks to herself, frowning as she places the ancient card back into the deck. "Does this foretell the fall of one of our band to save the rest, or the fall of all but one?" she wonders, silently studying her companions as they gather before heading out to the Dead Sector.

Actually, is there anyway we could get a map of the shrine? We seem to spending a lot of time here, and I think it would be helpful to have a map.

Thanks for the info on the potion. I arbitrarily assign the potion of bull's strength to one of the melee types...

Other than that, I have posted my actions, and I will update to include the Ring of Protection +1, and I am ready to go.

Back from the holiday weekend, and good to return to the sewers.

Did we get the ink? Did we manage to set up a discount agreement?

Grand Lodge

As per Wart's request, here is map of the Shrine of Aroden

Yes, you got the ink. No, you did not set up a discount, but did manage to arrange for a re-sell at 60% book value without ever having to make the diplomacy check again, as long as you don't try to cheat the merchants. Is everyone ready to proceed? If so what is the plan of attack?

I vote that we approach the Bastards from the surface. They may be expecting us to return via the sewers, fortifying that approach accordingly.

Are we sure that the tieflings from the Shrine really are the Bastards of Erebus? After all, with so many devils floating around Westcrown, there is bound to be more than one tiefling community.

Male Human Cleric 5 / Inheritor's Crusader 1

Eh, a cult of Mammon is good enough to return and put to an end. If it's not the Bastards, they'll get what's coming soon enough.

Male Halfling Alchemist : 4

We did find out that Erebus is the 3rd layer of Hell, run by...you guessed it...Mammnon. So if these bastards ain't the Bastards, then they at least still need the killin'.

Male Human Fighter

I think a surface attack might work, though it would have been nice to see where any surface entrances dropped us at in the sewers, especially since the only part to search was the door with the pit in it I think.

HP 53/53, AC- 21, Flat-Footed- 19, Touch- 12 CMD 19, Fort- +9, Reflex- +6, Will- +10, Perception- +13, Init- +5, AOO- +9 (1d10+6), Judgement 2/2, Bane 6/6

Morghrim is adamant that even if the sewer dwellers weren't the Tieflings we were after, they are still Mammon worshippers and must be purged from the city. The stubborn Dwarf declares that he'll go back alone if he must...

So are we looking at 3 votes for the sewers, 2 for the surface, and 1 undecided? If so, then let's head on over to the sewers. Addie's anxious to get rid of these tieflings; she wants to go try out for that new play, the Six Trials of Larazod.

HP: 44 /44; 0 non-lethal AC 19; touch 14; flat-footed 16 Fort: +5; Reflex: +5; Will: -1

Kev votes for exploring the rest of the Mammon cult's lair. With any luck, they were too decimated to be able to put up much resistance at that entry way. He has his silvered battleaxe readied instead of his greataxe this time.

Grand Lodge

So back to the sewers is it?

Male Human Cleric 5 / Inheritor's Crusader 1

Indeed.

Prep:

After purchasing the ink, Valeron will scribe a scroll of Silence. He will keep the rest of the ink for future plans.

As always, he'll cast Light on his shield, and draw his longsword before descending.

Grand Lodge

The party makes their way back to the sewer entrance that led them to the Cult of Mammon. Upon entering the area, you find things much as you left them a night ago, including the door to the pit room still sealed shut.

Male Halfling Alchemist : 4

Is/was there a shine to Mammnon down here? Methinks we should descrate it if there is.

Addie's still kind of leery of that pit room (there might be a FIEND in it... get it? Pit FIEND? I just kill myself sometimes... Should've been a bard).

Let's head down that hallway that the tiefling priest was retreating down. If the tieflings we fought here and the Bastards are all the same group, then maybe that passage leads to their main hideout. Can anyone tell if that passage heads in the same general direction as the Bastards HQ on the surface?

Grand Lodge

Yes the shrine is still there and currently intact. And yes the hallway the last tiefling was headed down does head in the general direction of what you believe to be the Bastard's compound.

Male Halfling Alchemist : 4

Wart pauses at the Shrine to Mammnon, to break it apart and deface it.

Disable device check:

  • 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
  • Wart whispers to the group,

"I know this sounds strange, but let's not just destroy the Bastards, let's get at their very influence here also."

If that doesn't work, look up at Morghrim and the others with the "help" look of kittens, eyes *really* big.

    Male Human Cleric 5 / Inheritor's Crusader 1

Valeron tries to hide a smile at Wart's valiant efforts to destroy the relic of Mammon.

The cleric kneels, studying the ground as if it holds the solution to some ancient riddle.

"Anyone good at finding tracks? Can we tell if anyone passed through here in our absence?"

He looks about the others - for some reason his gaze finally resting on Morghrim - perhaps expecting there is nothing the dwarf is incapable of.

Ironically, I was going to scribe Consecrate with the remaining ink. If there is a desecrated area, I'm sure Talomyr will tell us, and we can return to "fix" that problem.

    Grand Lodge

Wart, with a bit of effort, manages to disassemble the shrine, though the taint of evil still remains where the altar once stood.

Inquisitors do have that 'can do' vibe I always got when I played Bards :).

If there are tracks i'll find 'em lad- though I expect they'll lead the way that nasty Tiefling went. Mayhap we can return another day and make this place stink less of evil.
