1d10 ⇒ 3

Eseldra had little to say once the discussion she initiated got started. Later into the evening, however, she confesses to Karthas, "It's not Pharasma that worries me. It's always been a fear at the back of my mind that if and when my time should come, that there might be other, harsher powers, ready to waylay and divert my soul from a peaceful rest."

Agreed, a very enjoyable game.

Rumor roll: 1d10 ⇒ 6. Indeed, thanks for running this...and apologies, because I haven't been quite as active as I would have liked to have been. Busy at work but I'm hoping that'll clear up a bit soon.

"My main concern, tactically, is in being able to reach those of our party that need healing in time. Though Erastil claimed two of the bandits in this last fight, I am overall a poor shot with the bow. I may improve but my biggest benefit to the party is in channeling Erastil's will into keeping our fighters fighting once the blows have begun falling."

Rani spends most of the evening just watching the interplay between the members of the group. She has spent much time by herself in the wilderness, with her recent trips to the Restov to learn from Father Avery representing most of her adult "socialization". She gets along well with nature...now she's trying hard to learn to interact with other people as well.

"Harsher powers?" Karthas asks, clearly concerned. "Have you made unwise deals to come by your powers, or is there something else?"

Thanks guys! It's always nice to hear! Having a blast running it, and it is funny how different it is already from the version I'm running live. You guys are the ones making it fun!

Karthas's rumor:

Spoiler:
One of the hunter tells you, after a few drinks, that the reason that some of the bandits wear the stag amulets is because they belong to a cult that is dedicated to a hideous animal demon that they are trying to summon and release in Brevoy.

Harther's rumor:

Spoiler:
Oleg tells you during a conversation about your travels that he's heard word of a unicorn living in the southern Greenbelt. On reflection he muses that tales have since tapered off. He shrugs and suggests that it was either totally fabricated or that the bandits have since run the beast off.

Eseldra's rumor:

Spoiler:
A trapper, obviously taken the your exotic beauty, strikes up a conversation with you. After his advances are most likely rebuffed, he good-naturedly speaks with you about your charter. He warns about a bridge crossing the Shrike River to the southeast that was destroyed by bandits. He swears that the ruined bridge is now haunted by the revenant of the old bridge keeper, a man named Davik Nettles.

Rani's rumor:

Spoiler:
After she serves dinner, Svetlana complains that it is becoming tougher and tougher for her to get salted fish from the River Kingdoms. She and Oleg enjoy an unusual dish made from the meat from a siltmouth snapper, which can only be caught far to the west, deep in the River Kingdoms, but trade has been difficult due to boggards along the waterway of the East Sellen River. She hopes the frog people quit being a nuisance so the trade route can open back up. She says it is unfortunate that you won't be exploring that far west, as the problems are many miles away.

Also to Karthas and Harther, I'm working on a post for both the wanted posters and a lead on the caravan, but I've got to get to bed. Look for those tomorrow! I'm curious to see how you all decide to proceed with the exploration. This AP is very much driven by the players, and I'm excited to see where you take it!

Sounds good Sully. I think I'm done for tonight too.

Rumor Roll:1d10 ⇒ 3
Tyr as well keeps to himself, oft times looking deep in thought as he stares at either the flickering fire or off at the stars.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Really hating being in a different time zone to when the majority of you post; means I miss out on a lot of the RP. I will be three hours closer if I ever get home (flight pushed back until at least Friday now). And yes, I am thoroughly enjoying this PBP and the way it's going so far, although I fear I sometimes come across the wrong way in my posts

Berenkor has a wonderful evening with his new friends, and gets up to several things (i'll retcon a bit, sorry :) )

Rumour Roll- 1d10 ⇒ 4

After his performances are over, Berenkor inspects the aforementioned 'bulletin', keen to see what requests have been made of the Chartered Six.

At some point to the party, he will mention to them what he knows of Kesten Garess; He is a son of minor nobility, but after a scandal between him and a commoner, his father disowned him and he fled to become a mercenary. I'd imagine he is not keen to talk of it, although I plan to gain his trust and confidence in our visits here.

When the party discuss tactics, Berenkor does cease his charm offensive long enough to briefly join in the discussion- I think the essence of the danger today was simply that Eseldra's spell does not have the luxury of keeping her safe at range; indeed, the spell is most effective against groups of enemies who are not yet engaged in melee, but if a foe is unengaged in melee, an intelligent foe is bound to target our wizard. For my part, I must confess holding back a little in the fight; I saved one of my more powerful spells in case we ran into trouble or a second wave. I could also take a greater part in the melee- my longsword has not yet tasted bandit blood.

Throughout the evening, the stout Gnome gets more and more roaring drunk, singing songs to Cayden Cailean, who it turns out is Berenkor's deity.

"Harsher powers?" Karthas asks, clearly concerned. "Have you made unwise deals to come by your powers, or is there something else?"

Eseldra's eyes flash angrily at Karthas. "NO! That is a foul thing. Do not every suggest such a thing again in my presence!"

Eseldra looks genuinely shocked at the intensity of her own outburst. "Oh my, Karthas, please forgive me. That was totally uncalled for. I...Sometimes you don't have to initiate deals and ties with dark powers, they initiate with you, and its effects can often be felt well down the family tree." She looks about the crowded drinking room, and then reluctantly pulls her leathery tail out of the back of her blouse to show Karthas. If anybody else sees it, she frantically stuffs it back inside her shirt and looks terrified.

Tyr's Rumor:

Spoiler:
Kesten talks of an abandoned gold mine somewhere in the Greenbelt. The stories say that the mine was dug too deep and broke into a nest of particularly nasty spiders, but no one seems to recall the location. Kesten freely admits it could be just wishful thinking or completely fabricated.

Berenkor's Rumor:

Spoiler:
After a particulary rousing version of the bawdy song "Cayden's Conquests," a hunter who frequents the northern part of the Greenbelt becomes serious and warns of a trapper named Breeg Orlivanch who has been known to set his traps on game trails and in places where humanoid hunters and trappers roam. The hunter doesn't know if Breeg does it out of some sadistic impulse or if he is trying to catch someone to rob them or perhaps use them for some sort of ritual. The hunter knows nothing else, and admits that Breeg could just be a terrible trapper and not know any better, but that the man was unpleasant regardless.

Appearing surprised at Eseldra's revelation, "There is nothing to forgive. We all have our secrets...or in my case, deeds from the past we are not proud of. Let your actions define you, not the deeds of those who came before you, surely the gods would agree."

Tyr listens to the fireside chatting and the rumors and stories that circulate, but does little to add anything of his own other than pleasantries. As the evening wears on, he bids his good will to others and retires.

Anyone who wishes to look at the bulletin board sees the following postings:

WANTED: TATZLWYRM

Spoiler:

Tatzlwyrm's are rare creatures, even though every trapper and his mother claims to have had a run-in. That being said, a tatzlwyrm head would make a great trophy for my trading post main hall. Bring me one intact and I'll give you 600gp in credit for any goods I have here or requisition from Restov.

Signed - Oleg

WANTED: TUSKGUTTER

Spoiler:
Every Greenbelt hunter has a story about Tuskgutter, each wilder than the last. A nasty giant boar, this one is. Took my leg near a year ago, and near got my life. Bring me his head and I'll give you a fine crafted longbow and six magical arrows. Plus, I'll share the head cheese I'll make outta the bastard's noggin!

Signed - Vekkel Benzen

WANTED: MOON RADISHES

Spoiler:
Moon radishes are a delicious type of radishes found throughout the Greenbelt. Bring me enough to make a soup and I'll give you a couple pieces of adventuring gear I'm not like to ever sell.

Signed - Svetlana

KOBOLDS IN THE HILLS

Spoiler:
Word has reached the Swordlords of a tribe of kobolds who call themselves the Sootscales who inhabit the Kamelands, a rolling, grassy plain just to the east of the Greenbelt. Something has gotten the creatures riled. Find their lair and either forge a peace with them or drive them from the Kamelands and the swordlords promise 1000gp to the group or person responsible.

Oleg also mentions in passing his wife's wedding ring again. He says she'd kill him herself if she knew he'd send the Chartered Six after what she called "a trifle," but Oleg knows how much the loss of the simple ring has upset her. He promises 1000gp in trading post credit if they can find it.

After retiring for the night, the group is awakened an hour or so after dawn by a soft knock and Svetlana's voice calling the (slightly hungover) group to breakfast. After a simple meal of bread, cheese, and several rashers of bacon Svetlana had been saving Oleg asks the party where they are going to begin their exploration.

The ball is in your court, Chartered Six! Where will you head first? The task of mapping the Greenbelt is daunting, but even the longest journey begins with a single step!

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Oleg and Svetlana are providing a morning meal and accomodation for free; what about the stabling of my horse?

Oh. I have a horse too but have put no thought into what happens to it when I'm not thinking about it...Schrödinger's horse I guess.

As to what to do, maybe we should explore the hex where Oleg's is located and maybe the ones immediately surrounding it. Spend a few days making sure the vicinity of our new "home" is safe before venturing further out.

"I haven't seen moon radishes in ages. Have to keep my eyes open for those...maybe Svetlana will share some of that soup."

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

We need to explore the area as part of our charter, I would suggest that we start exploring, by going after Svetlana's ring. Since we have a lead on that. I can't imagine that it's too far away from the bandit camp we just took down.

Karthas somewhat matter-of-factly states during breakfast, "A hunter told me last night, that the reason that some of the bandits wear the stag amulets is because they belong to a cult that is dedicated to a hideous animal demon that they are trying to summon and release in Brevoy. Personally, I don't believe it...probably just because they all work for this so-called Stag Lord. Any of the rest of you hear anything unusual last night?"

Berenkor Trandoran wrote:

Boarding is free, feed will cost a gold per week.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Oleg's hex already counts as fully explored; I agree with Rani that we explore the hexes adjacent to Oleg's first, and slowly branch out.

Groaning, Berenkor shakes his head.

By the bloody skill of Zun-Kuthon man, must you talk so loud? As for what I heard last night, I can barely remember my name this morning. Berenkor says groggily, looking the worse for wear. I'll remember it when it matters I guess. So, Eseldra; did you establish if the goods in the crates were Oleg's? I am hoping to commission myself a fine piece of armour, but we will need to divide the spoils before I can guarantee I have the money to pay for it.

I suggest we stay near Oleg's and begin to map the region, maybe start by going east a little and beginning to map the terrain?

Stag amulets? I must have missed that. Are they worth anything?

The stag amulets are worth the silver they were minted from, as the craftmanship isn't exceptionally good. The furs belonged to Oleg, and the music box was Svetlana's, but the rest of the goods belong to the group now, and Oleg will purchase them. If he doesn't have coin to buy your goods, he will trade the goods for their value in requisitioned items. He also tells the group that he has sent word to Restov to grant him a stiped of coin to use to purchase goods the Chartered Six might find in their travels. He's not sure how much they will send.

Tyr shakes his head negatively at Karhtas' question. He is not going to be one to spread rumors heard over cup.

"The notices tacked up on the board over there will certainly add enough fun to our task of engaging the bandits here about." He comments.

"Though I for one also like the idea of adding these radishes to our staples. Extra variety in what one eats is always a good thing.

"How transplant-able are these radishes?" He asks Rani casually

May as well sell the amulets too, if they came from Haps and the Woman they are obviously a mark of rank, and thus useless to us as a disguise.

Agreed, even if the amulets are not a symbol of rank, surely the group of bandits isn't so large that our addition to their numbers wouldn't be noticed.

Berenkor pays ten weeks in advance, assuming that the feed per week also includes packed food for the horse when I ride out for exploration.

So where to, oh noble cartographers?

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

My votes on the hex just east of Oleg's. And bah, I should really get to sleep...

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

It doesn't matter to me. I'm fine with going to the east if that's what we want to do.

Berenkor Trandoran wrote:

Just to clarify, the hexes just east and west of Oleg's are already "explored."

Here is a link to Harther's awesome hex map.

Hex Map Link

Furthermore, here again is the list of hexes that need explored and mapped:

Oleg's Trading post is in the southern part of hex D1. The area the charter requires you to explore includes hexes 2A-2F, hexes 3B-3F, hexes 4B-4F, hexes 5B-5G, hexes 6A-6F, and hexes 7B-7E. Each hex is either made up of primarily hill country or primarily forest country, with each requiring a different amount of time to travel across or fully explore. Note that travelling across a hex is not the same as fully exploring it, and just travelling is much faster. Also note that I'll ask for survival checks to avoid getting lost moving in a hex that has not been explored (aid another is possible in this case). As a group, you guys can decide how best to move through the Stolen Lands, what areas to focus on, or where to head. The overarching goal is to fully map this area, including all landmarks, resources, and so on.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Kk, D2 then. And incidentally I shall be taking my horse on all of our explorations. Also if we leave before Eseldra's player has time to sort loot out, can I please retcon commissioning my armour if I have enough cash; ideally I want my armour after out first exploration.

Berenkor Trandoran wrote:

No problem. Retconning is pretty much inevitable at times in a PbP. :)

Berenkor Trandoran wrote:

Hold on, how many of these stag amulets are there? I don't remember finding those on Happs and Kestra - guess I wasn't paying close enough attention! Let's not sell them just yet - you never know when something bearing the enemy's insignia could come in handy.

Eseldra will attempt to appraise the liquor and earrings.

Appraise checks (as needed)
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

As for coinage, everybody gets 15 gp and 53 sp from the sack of coin we found.

Eseldra will order/buy 75gp worth of scroll components, enough to fashion 6 level 1 scrolls.

DM Sully wrote:

"I overheard the bandits in the camp say that mites had stolen items from them on a couple of occasions," Harther says to Oleg after he hears the trader's offer. "The bandit woman with the axes - Kestra - said that the mites had stolen Svetlana's ring. One of the bandits that we captured indicated that the mites came from the east. I'll talk to the others and see if we can start our exploration efforts to the southeast."

Agree with starting exploration in hex D2.

The party wastes no time heading to the southeast. Dappled sunlight filters through the pines and newly blossomed trees as the party ventures deeper into the trackless wilderness. The going is slow as nettles, ivy, and other dense undergrowth force the party to dismount and lead their mounts as often as they are able to ride.

As the party begins to explore and map in earnest, noting valleys, particularly dense areas of forest, springs and the like, the hours quickly pass and dusk begins to fall. Whoever is the "guide" (highest Survival modifier) make a check with everyone else who would like to help making an aid another check to determine how well the area is mapped.

As the shadows grow under the eaves of the trees and the air grows dimmer as the gloaming approaches, the party comes upon a break in the trees leading to a clearing ahead.

I also need a Perception check from everyone, sight and sound based.

EDIT: Fixed direction in the first sentence.

The earrings are worth 150gp, and the liquor is a potent one made from fangberries. Each of the eight bottles is worth 20gp each. Oleg offers to buy the earrings at full price as a gift for Svetlana and the liquor for 12gp a bottle to add to his stock.

The components, and the chain shirt if you have enough, Berenkor, will arrive at Oleg's in one week. Anyone else is free to requisition an order from Oleg if you'd like.

If there is anyone who is able to make a calendar online like Harther has done with the maps, that could come in very handy! No pressure, but if anyone has the talent or opportunity, let me know and we can work it out!

DM Sully wrote:

I think that should be 'southeast'.

Highest Survival modifier is going to be Rani (with a +8). Harther will roll to assist:

Survival Check (Aid Another): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Perception Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Survival to assist: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Wow! Clearly, with those rolls, Eseldra should be the party map-maker. She can make an excellent map that leads straight to the tree she just walked into!

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

Survival (Aid):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Perception:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

BTW, if nobody minds, Harther will take 18 of the 48 arrows that we recovered from the bandit camp.

To save time, go ahead and roll initiative.

If you get over 10 on the Perception check you can act in the surprise round, and view the spoiler.

Spoiler:
About forty feet ahead of you in the grassy clearing you see two odd creatures about the size of a dog, but with the slender build of a cat, heavy whiskers, and dark stripes down their backs. Their long tails flip about, smacking the ground as they scan the woods. They yip and bay quietly, then noticing you, roar with hugely distended jaws filled with long, sharp teeth and bay with a terrifying howl as they move towards the party.

No difficult terrain between you and the creatures.

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

How far away are the creatures and what sort of terrain?

Initiative:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 let's see if this roll sucks as bad as usual

EDIT: sure did...

Karthas wrote:

In the surprise round

Seeing the approaching beast's ill intent, Karthas howls and charges the closest beast.

Rage, Power Attack, 40ft. charge

Attack:1d20 + 6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 - 1 = 17
Damage:2d6 + 7 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6) + 7 + 3 = 20

Wow. That developed quickly. So, Survival 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 followed by Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 and then Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

edit: *over* 10 or 10 or more?

Also, at this point in time you are coming from an area that was quite overgrown. No one is mounted.

Since you have the highest base survival check, Harther's and Karthas' aid to your survival check add +4

Yeah, but she had the sorriest roll :) So, Sully, the end result on Survival is 16. In the surprise round she'll fire an arrow at the nearest creature. Mwk Longbow atk 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 dmg 1d8 ⇒ 2

"Look out. Those things are going to attack!"

edit: Forgot to pray :)

Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Can Harther make a quick Knowledge (Nature) check to identify the creatures? If so: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Surprise Round: Harther nocks an arrow to his bow, and fires upon one of the attacking creatures.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Survival Roll"1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10, Perception:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, Initiative:1d20 ⇒ 16

Tyr continues to look at the forest around him. His mind possibly sixing up the heights of different trees.

Great perception roll there by Tyr. ;)
