If you guys lose a player for Kingmaker (in the normal course of attrition)

don't forget a kobold brave who's on an epic quest for REDEMPTION. (Or for Esaldra's cast off robes n' things- whichever comes first...)

~Marcus/Mikmek...

The Exchange

Hey guys,

Really enjoying your game here! If you guys lose a player for whatever reason, PLEASE, consider me for a replacement. I am highly adaptable, versitile and can play whatever class would round out/fit the party best. I have played pen/paper for over 30 years since 1st but am totally new to PbP. It would be an honor to play with you all and I can assure you posting won't be a problem.(barring acts of God, internet struck by lighting, ect...LOL) Thanks for your kind consideration.

Thanks, Marc! I'm glad you're along for the ride. Keep an eye on this thread and the original recruitment one. If any space opens up, those are the places to look and where I'll announce an opening.

The kind words are appreciated!

Alone in a cavern in the Sootscales Warren, Mikmek weeps silently to himself. Never again would he see the towering, powerful, pretty bigfeet elf lady! Never again would he know what it felt like to be a member - however briefly - of a band of warriors united for a greater cause than mere kobold looting and scavenging. Maybe he should just go drown his sorrows in yet another jug of Moon Radish Brew-Up. Maybe in his inebriation he would at least have a momentary, alcohol-induced feeling of heroism, of camaraderie, before passing out for yet another night...

Sure, if you guys WANT to have the dissolution and death of a lonely kobold brave on your hands...

; )

I'D be up to adding a kobold mascot to our party...

Mikmek grovels and capers and whimpers and fawns most obsequiously (a la Gollum in friendly mode) on Harther!

"Brave wise-wise strong bigfeet man with hat!"

[Sensitive types, avert your eyes from the scene of literal boot-licking that follows...]

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

"Harther, step away. Have you any idea where that kobold has been?"

All kidding aside, if Sully doesn't mind, I think the little beast (Mikmek, no Marcus) could make for some cool RP options for the party.

Apologies in advance to Eseldra if Mikmek gets into the group.:)

Awww. Mikmek is cute...and he adores Eseldra. Rani votes to let him in so that he can be near the object of his affection. :)

Hey, Sully! Have you seen the Spell-less Ranger base class by Marc Radle, which was presented in Kobold Quarterly #11? I was wondering if that might be an option for Harther, since the changes kick in with Ranger level 2.

Sovereign Court

Why would a spell less rangers changes kick in at Level 2, when you don't get spells at Level 2? What do you get and when? Curious. A lot of my 3.5 players opted for spell-devoid rangers and paladins.

Tell me more, Harther. I've not seen it.

And I'm really having a tough time not allowing Mikmek along. Let me mull it over a bit longer...

At Level 2 the ranger gets Sneak Attack against favored enemies and/or in favored terrain. At Level 3 the ranger gets a boost to use of the Heal skill. After that, the ranger gets ranger talents (similar to rogue talents) and bonus feats. There's also some new feats that let the ranger get extra favored enemies or favored terrains. (Hope that's not giving away too much.)

That seems awfully powerful compared to the relatively weak spell selection the ranger gets to choose from. I'm looking into it for you, though!

Yeah, there's a bit of debate going on about whether the spell-less ranger is too strong compared to the standard ranger vs. too weak compared to the standard ranger. Check out THIS THREAD.

Sovereign Court

It sounded too strong when you said sneak attack. Then you got to Ranger talents and I thought 'god, surely not more?', lol.

Had a read through, a second animal companion that's stronger than the first?!?! Man people really overvalue the Ranger's spells IMO.

Hey guys! Sorry to jump in, but I was pointed to this thread and thought I might offer a quick comment ...

As has been said, the class is in Kobold Quarterly 11. You can pick up a copy of the issue right here at Paizo if you like:

Kobold Quarterly 11

It's always interesting to read different people's take on a class. Some people feel the class is a bit more powerful than the standard Pathfinder ranger, many feel it is pretty much on par with it and a few have even said it might be a bit less powerful! As James Jacobs has said in the past, that tends to indicate a given class is more or less right where in needs to be, power wise.

In any case, the class was extensively playtested by various people at different levels and in different situations, including a weekly, long term campaign and the class felt very balanced.

Like I said, I apologize for jumping in - enjoy your game!!!

That's crazy!

"Mikmek" is actually the old Draconic word for 'kippers' - !

Our pal Mikmek received the name when he was but a wee hatchling, due to his fondness for fish that - even by kobold standards - had gone 'round the bend...

Mikmek is swearing off the booze as of TODAY

Hey Sully!

Any more thoughts on the Spell-less Ranger?

I'm fine either way.

Thanks!

I'm cool with the spell-less ranger, Harther. I thought it was kind of overpowered at first, but upon further review I think it's cool as it just really makes you a beast against your favored enemies.

Also, just in case there is any interest in hearing my band that's sucked up so much of my time, we've got our demo up where you can listen to it:

Hi DM Sully, all,
It seems I'm not finding enough time these days to be as active in the game as I would like (or, at all over the past week). Rather than mess up the flow with continued absence I guess it'd be better if you recruit another player for my slot - I know there are a few out there that would probably like to join. I don't have a problem if somebody wants to take over playing Rani.

Sorry about that...hate to flake on this but real life intrudes.

Well that's a bummer, but understandable...real life is always more important.

Take care, hope we can be part of a game again someday.

Good stuff, I like it. Sounds like you guys have a strong "classic rock" influence (maybe a little Deep Purple/Rainbow/Montrose influence if I'm hearing it correctly.)

@Rani - I'm sorry to see you go! You will be missed. To the rest of the group, Mikmek will be joining soon, but not really as a combat character. Do you all want to fill Rani's spot?

@Tal - Nice catch. We all love the classics like AC/DC, of course Deep Purple, Ted Nugent, etc. Thanks for listening!

I'm not really too fussed about not having a Cleric; I absolutely hate the mentality people have that they 'need' one. That said, a replacement character is my vote. Just not a cleric.

I'd say yes, we ought to find a replacement. The replacement doesn't have to be a cleric, but it would be bonus if the replacement did have some sort of healing capability (i.e. another bard, a druid, a paladin, etc.)

That being said, should we survive our encounter with the bear guardian, would it be appropriate to have Rani go back to the temple with Jhod to re-establish the temple as a functional temple of Erastil? This would be good story-reason to write her out, but still have her as a viable alternative should a spot become open and Merrin would like play her again.

I would be glad to play her, or someone of her ilk... If you guys want to let the character go, though, I will live with just the one game of Sully's :-)

Edit: Did someone say Druid...?

Hi, sad to see Rani go, but must admit I'm glad to have a chance to throw a hat into the ring.

Any chance I could put in an application?

--
Two Possiblities:

1. Ivan Garess, 29 (Rogue, then Fighter) CG, CN, or TN

Spoiler:

Trait: Noble Family (Garess), Accelerated Drinker from here: http://nethys.karuikage.net/traits.htm
Role: Spymaster, or Royal Executioner

Personality: Dour, but wise-cracks; like Eyeore mixed with Indiana Jones. "Another dead bandit executed by our swords? Another ghost to haunt my dreams... better go kill some good looking people to balance out those dreams." Bold and self-punishing. "No worry. I will watch fatigued for the entire night while the spellpeople dream their magical sleep. Maybe sometime in the future then they can heal me of my hangover. (Raises glass and starts drinking 1 per hour)". Alcoholic.

Motivation:
Wants to leave the past behind and forget everything he ever knew about Brevoy. Still writes to his father and his Uncle, Lord Howlan from time to time, but he wants to close that past, find a partner and a new land and opportunity. He does nothing but drink in Brevoy and there he has disgraced himself and all know of this. Now he wants a second chance.

Tendencies are to dislike thieves because they are dishonorable. He generally wants his fellow adventurers to be honorable. While he may not like dwarves, he is slowly getting over his hate for them and he realizes that they probably did not take his beloved cousin from him. He does believe in redemption, but he is generally sour about second chances.

Background:
He blames dwarves for his very close cousin's, Lord Howlan's son, disappearance when the Rogarvians and Goluyshkin dwarves disappeared. He started drinking hard that night, ten years ago, and he has not stopped since. He has asked everyone in New Stetven and Restov about the disappearance, he has been to Skywatch and tried to scale the walls, and he has traveled through the Icerim Mountains, all to no avail as he sank deeper and deeper into drink and delerium. After a fight with some dwarves in a seedy New Stetven bar, he was shipped back to his uncle Howlan who found a convenient way to get him out of the picture and out of punishment by sending him to the Stolen Lands as the family's designated explorer. Now he has given up about thinking of the past and he wants to stoically concentrate on the future.

Aspirations:
1. Quit the Drink... as much as possible
2. Start a new life and win honor for himself and his legacy- and honor Lord Howlan son (Bren?'s) legacy the way Bren would have wanted him to.
3. Find a partner in life and start a family and a legacy.
4. Uphold honor and righteousness.

Sing-Sing The Bard, 23 (Bard 1) TN or NG
Half Elven from Medvyed Lands.

Spoiler:

Traits: Noble Family (Medvyed), ???Pioneer

Role: one of the charisma based roles

Personality:
Sunny disposition, except when bandits or centaurs are involved; usual advice for them is to execute them first and ask questions later or alternatively to torture them most offensively.

Plays the harmonica, the lute, and a collapsible piano/organ (when can afford/rebuild). Always willing to teach others how to play. Plays jokes on fey, but not on humans after realizing that most humans do not appreciate those types of jokes.

Does not appreciate getting ripped off or the short end of the stick. If he thinks that someone is out-speaking or out-maneuvering him, his temper will run hot.

Motivation/Background:
An alliance of bandits in the Medvyed forests cut down all the trees on his ancestral lands; and his drunken human father left his elven mother and sold the remaining family mountains when Sing-Sing was 14. Now, he is looking to claim new lands for his descendants, and whence to move his aging mother.

His older sister was kidnapped by centaurs when traveling into Iobaria as an adventurer, and she was never heard from again.

He learned his songs from fey creatures and his father, a poet of some repute.

His favorite weapon is the longbow, and he is deadly with a shot. He also uses a dagger, but tries to avoid close combat after getting beaten near to death by his drunken father on too many occasions.

Aspirations:
1-Acquire a plot of land in the new lands south of Restov where he, a new family, and his mother can live.

2-Found a lyrical school trained in many varieties of the musical and performance arts (IS always searching out new performance techniques and contacts in the field to use as potential teachers) ; alternatively if set on the right path, he could end up as a wild west variety show runner like Wild Bill Cody.

Eh, there's scads of people in that thread. Better to let one of them play, as I'm already in one game. I think I need to DM a game, as there's a million people clamoring to get in every open slot that comes up.

Alright, shopping is complete, as well as finished a once-over checking skills, stats, etc.

Euron hopes to fill in Rani's shoes the best he can, although Niko (the wolf) may be the true star, here...

Male Human (Varisian/Ulfen) Druid 3

I see half the PCs rolled and half took 1/2 + 1 for HP.

I'm a gambling man, myself...

Rolls:

Niko: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Euron: 1d8 ⇒ 3

EDIT: Damn, should have a "reroll 1s" rule! :)

EDIT: Damn, should have a "reroll 1s" rule! :)

Animal companions always take the average I believe? Or that could be one of my house rules lol.

Male Human (Varisian/Ulfen) Druid 3

Our house rule is I make my players roll every level (no taking half or half+1). It's fiercely entertaining to see grown men making dozens of "practice rolls" before declaring "OK this is it."

The only wrinkle I have is I'll roll a second dice for them behind the DM screen, and they can pick their roll or the DM's roll. This makes 1's very uncommon since it requires both the player and I to roll a 1. You'd be amazed how many players roll say a 5 or 6 on d10 and mull over "taking the DMs" roll. Regardless if they take my roll, I move the screen and show what it rolled, resulting in agonizing shrieks when it shows "9" or "10" or knowing smiles when it shows a "1" or "2".

Good times... a CRPG can never compare.

Male Human (Varisian/Ulfen) Druid 3

Hmm forum ate my reply.

Our in-person game I make my players roll every time (no taking a fixed amount). It's fiercly entertaining to watch grown men and women agonize over a single roll (often there's a dozen practice rolls testing d8s and d10s out).

The one wrinkle is I'll make a second secret roll behind the DM screen, and the player can choose to take their roll or the secret DM roll. This makes ending up with a "1" rare since it requires it to be rolled twice (and players always take the DM roll if they get a "1").

It's comical to see someone mull over if they, say on a d10, keep their "5" or "6" or gamble with the DM.

Regardless of their choice, I very slowly move the DM screen and show my roll to derive enjoyment out of the pained shrieks (or cheers) as I expose a "9" or "10" was rolled, or the knowing nod when I had rolled a "1" or "2".
