Bjelich Dalibor |
His bow already in hand, the cleric looses a shot at the spot he'd last seen the hovering ball.
Attack vs. UFO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 Interesting...
Confirmed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
50% miss on a natural 20....?: 1d100 ⇒ 25 - I'll leave this to the professionals to figure out what's what :/
Is it possible to damage air?: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Watching his arrow fly through the air, Bjelich has a hard time deciding if he'd hit the mark or not. He moves to the opposite side, now facing Danna in a hope to get a better view then drops his bow in frustration. Did anyone see that? Did it hit? Danna, I think your fiery ball will do more harm to it.
HP 24 | SA fired bow| MA 5ft to flank | FA dropping bow and suggesting to use Flaming Sphere :)
Danna Laverton |
Danna, dismayed by the difficulty her companions are having in hitting her attacker, throws the stone she carried up in the air and intones some words. A rain of stones falls in front of her.
stone call: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7
Striker then leaps to her master's defence and tries to attack the creature.
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 13
Sorry, don't have that spell memorized.
Grigor |
Grigor got his shiny sword in the stagfortloot; it's additional to the one held for Akiros. He also has a MW lance from bringing Falgrim to justice, and Finwik had talked about passing the +1 amulet of natural armor to the front-line warrior, although I'm not sure on the status (or even wisdom) of that transfer. But if Finwik isn't using it in his stats, Grigor should be.
Sorry about the Will-o-wisp call; IRL these creatures are widely known mythological creatures in Slavic cultures, equivalent to witches in huts. We can amend Grigor's call to What is this thing? at DM's discretion.
DM oKOyA |
If that were so Grigor, then why was I making the others make knowledge checks? :P
Danna's hail of stones pounds the area just in front of her. You notice some of the rocks change direction after hitting the now invisible foe. A large area of ground in front of Danna is now strewn with debris. (difficult terrain) Danna then backs away.
Bjelich fires his arrow but it too sails off into the night sky. (Miss chance nullifies to hit roll. MA action ignored as the area (beside/behind the ball of light) is now difficult terrain)

Knowledge Arcana?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Corbius dodges forward presuming the creature that attacked Danna still stands/floats where it was. He thrusts his rapier through where the glow last was.
I think you migh have upset it Danna!

Bjelich Dalibor |
I like this Corbius guy! But it's not official until the lord decrees it so.
DM oKOyA |
You are indeed fighting a Will-O-Wisp. Kyras is aware of the following:
Darkvision, difficult to hit (AC 26), fairly durable (30+ hp), natural invisibility, perfect flyers, shock attack, feed on fear and immune to most magic (immune to spells that allow SR), magic missile is effective against them (but you need to be able to see them to target)
Kyras' strike misses the elusive foe as well.
A moment later another arc of electricity rends the night sky, striking Danna once again. The attacker once again fades from view after delivering the shock.

Round 2
Init Order:

Grigor 22 <--- IS UP!
Finwik 16
Danna, Striker 12
Bjelich 12
Kyras 4
Danna, Striker, Kyras and Grigor are all adjacent to the Will-O-Wisp, with Grigor and Kyras in flank with each other. Finwik and Bjelich are 10' away with soft cover blocking their view of the fight (and in melee with the target). You are all aware of the location of the Wisp. Miss chance applies obviously.
Bjelich Dalibor |
If anyone is interested in what to do next...CLICK HERE :)
Grigor |
Seeing Danna hit again (and fall?), Grigor Challenges the ball of energy (I think he can? FA) and swings again at it (SA).
Concealment miss: 1d100 ⇒ 53
attack, longsword +1, flanking, challenge: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 251d8 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 3 = 16
Party adjacent to "thing" get +1 to-hit.
Have any useful magics to employ? Now is the time. he asks his companions.
Grigor |
Clarifying Grigor's Challenge benefit to the party: while the beastie is threatened by Grigor (i.e. in the range of his weapon, 5' for the longsword), any melee attack from any party member is made at +1 to-hit. Watch that this is three technical conditions: beastie is in threat range of Grigor, ally is attacking, attack is a melee attack. It's complicated, so I thought I'd explicate.
DM oKOyA |
You guys don't always need to wait for me to proceed to the next player(s).
Grigor's strike, like the rest, fails to find the Wisp.
Round 2
Init Order:

Finwik 16 <--- IS UP!
My arrow was perfectly shot, I'm sure of it! and yet it missed. As Grigor and the magus' swords cut nothing but air, the cleric's shock is complete , Kyras too misses! And with a fine strike! Finwik, this foe is beyond us, we must make for the horses.
Bjelich Dalibor |
You can choose not to retreat and try the crossbow, but keep your expectations low on hitting.
You can chance it - making a break for the horses. At 10ft away it has closer targets to choose from than you.
Danna's area affect spell hit, but dropping acid on it is different. You could try to hit the square it's occupying but the splash may or may not hit it and Danna will also take dmg as well as possible Grigor and Kyras. Risky.
IMO, just make for the horses, untie them etc so we can mount and leave.
Grigor |
Retreat in D&D is generally very hard, and if anything Pathfinder makes it even harder. It's often difficult, for example, to deal with fallen comrades. In this case, the creatures probably move faster than our horseback speed of 35', and they fly. That all being said, retreat is not necessarily a bad option here... and basically, no one has good reason to be angry with you for making that choice. It wouldn't hurt to grab anything we can't do without and get the horses ready, but I'm far from sure that's the best option. Grigor was trying to get the fire to throw up enough sparks in the right direction to outline the ball, maybe you could try something like that? Sorry I can't be more help.
Did Kyras make a knowledge check? Was it resolved? Should I make one for Grigor?
DM oKOyA |
Retreat in D&D is generally very hard, and if anything Pathfinder makes it even harder.
I disagree, and how exactly does Pathfinder make retreat more difficult? Besides that, is retreat supposed to be easy in all situations? With fallen comrades?! :P
As has been stated, and explicitly run previously, "chases" are not determined by speed alone. Granted, in the case of a fast and flying foe in the darkness of night, your odds are dismal to escape. (Not all the horses are loaded enough to drop their movement to 35')
Grigor was trying to get the fire to throw up enough sparks in the right direction to outline the ball...
Are you trying to negate invisibility with a camp fire?!
Did Kyras make a knowledge check? Was it resolved? Should I make one for Grigor?
Yes he did. Yes it was. He has not revealed the result so far. (He has not posted since) And no you aren't required to as Grigor does not have the requisite knowledge skill.
I repeat my suggestion that Finwik could delay... ;)
DM oKOyA |
You didn't have to go that far. :)
Finwik freezes, unsure of what to do next...
Round 2

Kyras Lylaras-Orlovsky |
I thought it was a nice touch.:)
Grigor grab Danna and get out of here. It is a willow wisp even without their invisibility they out match us. Corbius again prokes at the area with his rapier hoping to hit the invisible fun ball.

Bjelich Dalibor |
Man, I thought running was a good option :(
Keep it weird Kyras! And don't forget, there is the triple 20 rule: Roll three natural 20s in a row and it is automatic death...read it somewhere Paizoish under house rules we should adopt :)
Hoping against hope that Striker will jump up and tear the thing to pieces with its cute little claws and fangs, Bjelich moves to Danna's side. Summoning the will of Erastil, the cleric places his hand on her forehead and utters the ancient language of his god. A soft glow washes over the fallen druid.

Kyras lunges at the spot he thinks the Will-O-Wisp is invisibly located and is rewarded when his blade finds resistance. An unearthly sounding noise escapes the unseen but now wounded monster, sounding a mix of anguish and anger.

Danna Laverton |
Striker, protecting his prone mistress, claws wildly at the air in front of her, the smell of blood and the sound of pain drawing her attack. (hopefully)

While she makes contact with the creature her claws find no purchase.
Finwik Narthropple |
Watching his allies fight bravely, Finwik musters up what little courage he has.
He drops his bow to the ground and slips past Kyras while drawing his dagger. F28 -> F29 -> E30 -> D30
Now flanking his invisible foe, he thrusts his dagger out hard, angling it toward the spot he saw Kyras thrust his rapier.
Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 47
To hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage: 1d3 + 2 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 + (4, 1) = 10
DM oKOyA |
You also seem to have your to hit and damage calculations mixed up. They should read:
To hit (with +1 dagger): [+2 BAB +1(Str) +1(Size) +1(magical weapon)] +2(flank) +1(Grigor's challenge) = 1d20[+5]+2+1 or 1d20+8
Damage: 1d3 +1(Str) +1(magical weapon) +1(dirty fighting) +2d6(sneak)= 1d3+3+2d6
Striker is unable to avenge her master while Finwik darts in opposite the cat but misses as well.
A moment later another arc of electricity flashes brightly, this time aimed at Kyras...
touch attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19 hit
damage: 2d8 ⇒ (4, 7) = 11 strain
...briefly revealing the Will-O-Wisp before it once again fades from view.
Round 3
Init Order:

Finwik 3
You are not sure of the Will-O-Wisp's position this round as it used a 5' step after becoming invisible. :P
Hint: RA
Bjelich Dalibor |
Who's going to be the bait? :)
Bjelich Dalibor |
Following the young druids advice, Bjelich readies his morningstar and waits for the spectre to show itself.
RA to attack when the "Willow Crisp" thing shows itself
Bjelich Dalibor |
Sighing, (He totally wanted a crack at hitting the thing...) Bjelich remembers his purpose. Quickly taking up the holy symbol of Erastil, the cleric speaks his deity's tongue. A wave of energy pours forth covering everyone in renewed courage.
SA to cast BLESS Duration 3 min. +1 morale bonus on att. rolls and saving throws vs. scary things.

Danna Laverton |
Danna retrieves her spear and waits to see what the wisp does next and instructs Striker to hold.
readied action to stand up if Wisp is out of threat range or attack with spear if it is in range. Striker will attack Wisp when it appears moving if necessary.
Striker's attack bite: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 1 = 231d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
striker's claws if in range #1: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 161d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
#2 claw: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 161d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Spell stone call ends at the end of round 4
DM oKOyA |
Kyras moves to d30
RA: Strike at wisp if appears.
D30 is difficult terrain (stone call) and therefore cannot be 5' stepped into. Moving would possibly provoke an AoO. You would also not be able to 5' step as part of your readied action (the time when you will actually know which way to step).
Suggest dropping the move and just RA
EDIT: point is moot due to the post below. :)
DM oKOyA |
Round 3 summary/conclusion
While Grigor and Danna waited to strike when the Wisp revealed itself, Bjelich decided to cast a spell. As he began to gesture and speak the words required, another stroke of electricity tore through the night...
touch attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21
damage: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 8) = 11 (strain)
concentration check vs DC (10+11+1=) 22: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 (fail)
...blasting the cleric and causing him to lose his spell.
In response, Grigor steps up (5' step to D29) and attacks the now visible Wisp. (roll Grigor's attack please)
Danna and Striker likewise attack, the former from the ground and the latter moving (MA to E27) opposite Kyras to do so. Even with Kyras providing a flank, the cat misses. (roll Danna's attack please)
Able to see the Wisp clearly at this point, Kyras wasted no time driving his blade home!
Finwik stepped into a flanking position and joined the attack upon the Wisp. (roll Finwik's attack please)
Round 3
Init Order:
Ball of Light 25 *gone
Bjelich 12 *gone
Grigor 11 <--- IS UP!
Danna (prone) 11 <--- IS UP!
Striker 11 *gone
Kyras 4 *gone
Finwik 3 <--- IS UP!
Obviously the Wisp is not invisible at this moment, so no miss chance.
Bjelich Dalibor |
That would have been a great hit Finwik, too bad the gods were not completely in your favor :/
