You can only take a 5' step in a round in which you have not moved with your move action. So for example, you used your MA to draw a weapon or stand from prone or some such thing, you then could take a 5' step and attack. Or attack and then take a 5' step back.

However in this specific scenario, you cannot take a 5' step in difficult terrain.

My suggestion is to drop your crossbow as a free action (No AoO, but the crossbow will remain in this square if you move away), draw your weapon as a move action and attack defensively with your standard action. The move to higher ground isn't worth risking the AoO. (It only gives you a +1 to hit.)

Half-Elf Arcanist Lvl 5 (occultist)

Kyras will attempt to break the grapple.

Kryas tried to get free of his wyrm's grip but could not manage it.

One of the two wyrms fighting Danna took advantage of its position...

Damned wyrm! she shrieks while flailing with her shortspear.

She manages a lucky strike and pokes its writhing body.

Striker seeing her master struggling, attacks the creature as well. Unless by some freak chance Danna's strike killed it then of course Striker will attack the other one.

Striker full attack, bite, claw, claw: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 91d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 201d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 181d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Danna, I'm not sure if you can use your shortspear...grab something else :)
I've lost track, is the wounded wyrm grappled with Danna? or is that one to the south?

If You Are Grappled:
If you are grappled, you can attempt to reak the grapple as a standard action by making a combat maneuver check (DC equal to your opponent's CMD; this does not provoke an attack of opportunity) or Escape Artist check (with a DC equal to your opponent's CMD). If you succeed, you break the grapple and can act normally. Alternatively, if you succeed, you can become the grappler, grappling the other creature (meaning that the other creature cannot freely release the grapple without making a combat maneuver check, while you can). Instead of attempting to break or reverse the grapple, you can take any action that doesn't require two hands to perform, such as cast a spell or make an attack or full attack with a light or one-handed weapon against any creature within your reach, including the creature that is grappling you. See the grappled condition for additional details. If you are pinned, your actions are very limited. See the pinned condition in Conditions for additional details.

A shortspear is one handed. It shouldn't be anymore unwieldy than a sword. Yes it is already wounded. The one behind me is one of the new ones.

Maybe a diagonal step in difficult terrain doesn't allow the first one as 5'?

Both wyrms attacking Danna are wounded... the one in D7 is the more heavily wounded of the two.

That is indeed 20' of movement in difficult terrain, which is what I think Chris is trying to say in his own way. :)

Round 3 conclusion

Bjelich plows through the swampy water and bashes the wyrm behind Danna in the head. It immediately slumps into the water motionless.

Danna and Striker are able to down the other one with a combination of spear and claws.

Grigor moved Gladius forward once again and stabbed at the wyrm holding onto Kyras...

Pierre are you trying to get out of this game? You seem bent on dying. You already know that Bjelich is going to heal you, just delay until after his turn.

I know he is going to heal him but Kyras does not. I doubt kyras could even tell what is going on with the other members while being mailed by the 2 of them. Kyras acts before Chris. That is meta gaming.

*sigh*

You guys are bound and determined to make things as difficult as possible for yourselves at every turn huh? :P

It is only metagaming if you use player knowledge to change your character's behaviour. Or to influence or change your intended course of action as a player of said character.

Given Kyras' circumstances, delaying was the best (possibly only) option for his survival. Whether Bjelich channeled or not (and personally, I would have attacked the wyrm instead if I was him, or at least intentionally provoked an AoO while casting, giving Kyras a chance to flee should he escape their clutches), giving your fellow players a chance to help Kyras was the best play. Just because Chris jumped the gun and posted out of turn (and I did specifically indicate that only Finwik and Kyras were to act) does not mean that you are barred from making the intelligent play to save your character. Even setting that aside, why break the grapple? Knowing it will send you into the negatives anyhow, accomplishing nothing, when you could have attacked instead? You had a decent chance to kill one of the wyrms, leaving the others to deal with the remaining wyrm? Killing the grappler is a pretty effective way of escaping the grapple. :P

So your choices were: 1. wait and see what the others can do to help or 2. do something that at least increased your chance of survival or 3. act in a manner detrimental to your survival. You seemed to choose option 3. Possibly out of spite. If not that then inattentiveness. :P

In the future, let's lets me worry about policing the metagaming ok? :)

Thanks for the link to explain grapple. From what I read, I'm not at any actual combat disadvantage since I don't use two handed weapons anyways. Instead of spending an action to try to break the grapple, I may as well just fight.

Instead of attempting to break the grapple, Finwik steels his tiny resolve and attempts a feint on the Tatzlwyrm.

@ Finwik: Only if you consider having -2 to your AC, not being able to move and opening yourself up to the wyrm rake attacks not "actual combat disadvantages". :)

Round 4 summary/conclusion

Finwick, caught in the clutches of the wyrm, tried to create an opening to strike effectively, rather than escape its deadly hold. (vs DC 15, but you suffer a -4 penalty to your roll due to the target being non-humanoid. Feint fails)

Kyras, severely weakened by the ordeal, attempted to extract himself from the two wyrms holding onto him...
break grapple #2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
...managing to only escape from one but not the other. The effort proved too much for the Baron and he slipped into unconsciousness.

Bjelich moved towards the downed half-elf and attempted to revive Kyras with a burst of divine healing. Kyras regained consciousness, but was prone and still in the deadly embrace of one of the wyrms, with the other looming over him.

Danna slogged through the water and hurled her spear at the wyrm still clutching onto Kyras...

...embedding it into the reptilian monster.

Striker moved in and attacked the same wyrm... (MA 40' to D 10)
attack w/ bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Grigor directed Gladius to attack the same wyrm as well...

attack w/ hoof: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
...landing a bite and a vicious stomp, finally causing the beast to relinquish its hold and fall still in the fetid waters.

Meanwhile, the wyrm on Finwik strengthened it grip on the hapless adventurer...
grapple check (pin): 1d20 + 9 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 5 = 30 (success)
...and wrapped him in a tight embrace prey. (Finwik is now pinned)

The only other remaining wyrm bites at the prone Kyras...
attack w/bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
bite damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
...opening a nasty wound in his neck (11 injury) before moving off. Kyras grasps at the wound trying to staunch the flow of blood but loses consciousness again and slips below the water. (prone and incapacitated at -3 HP underwater)

As the wrym retreated Grigor poked at it with his lance...

Finwick struggled mightily but could not escape the wyrm's strong grip.

Kyras fell deathly still as his lungs began to fill with water.

Bjelich (too many actions listed) rushed to where Kryas lay underwater (MA) and dropped his morning star into the water (FrA). Plunging his hand down into the murky water, he grabbed ahold of the Baron's shoulder and hauled his head clear(MA). (No action left to cast. Stabilize would not keep Kyras from drowning anyhow. Kyras is at -4 HP, dying, but not drowning any more.) Bjelich could hear ragged breaths and see foaming bubbles escaping the half-elf's lips.

Danna continued slogging through the water, this time hurling a spear at the wyrm wrapped around Finwik...

I'm sorry, what?

Danna, hoping that Grigor and Striker have Finwik's Tatzlwyrm in hand, rushes back to aid Bjelich and Kyras. She is just in time to see Kyras slip back under the water and curses to herself again. She pulls out a spear as she moves closer and throws it at the (heavily?) wounded wyrm.

MA to G9 and do I get +1 for higher ground or only if melee?

shortspear: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 151d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

She manages to land a blow. Meanwhile Striker moves in )O10 to attack her target and manages to get a nip in.

bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 201d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Yeah,I thought Danna's sticker sounded good but I forgot what it was too.

Higher ground bonus only applies to melee attacks.

Round 6 summary/conclusion

Danna's spear stills the wyrm wrapped around Bjelich while Striker nips the other.

Grigor then moves on it as well...
attack w/ lance: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 1 = 21
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
...driving his lance home.

The Tatzlwyrm, heavily wounded and obviously outnumbered, finally breaks off hostilities, withdrawing some 30' away before plunging below the water's surface.

Bjelich once again hauls the unconscious Kyras above the water...

End of round 6. Happy to end combat here, and drop out of rounds, if you are...

Hopefully the spear wasn't still stuck in it! That's my MW weapon! Danna, trusting Bjelich to tend to Kyras, calls Striker to her and makes her way carefully, with Striker as her escort, to recover her thrown weapons and check on Finwik.

She then makes her way to Palm and lays her hands on her faithful beast, saying her good-byes. She then retrieves all the gear she had stowed on her. In keeping with the laws of nature Palm is left to feed the beasts of the forest or swamp as the case may be.

Perhaps we need to put some signs around this place indicating it is Tatzlwyrm territory and to enter at your own risk. Danna states wryly.

How big an area does this swamp encompass? How deep does the water get? Is it bridgeable? Would it be easier to go around it or would it make more sense to build a road following the higher ground? Thinking kingdom building, but maybe we don't need to think this micro? Which hex is it anyway?

You are definitely thinking too micro. This is hex H4, the hex south west of the capital (the Swamp Witch hex).

Bjelich takes stock of what's just happened. One horse, Palm, mutilated with no hope of returning to this realm. The other, Mokos, although badly wounded, will make a recovery; but he will bare the scars of this day for the rest of his life. As for the others, the cleric waves everyone over to where Kyras lays. Calling to Danna, Bring Finwik and his pony over here!
Grigor, stay vigilant! That other wyrm is still out there.

No Danna, the cleric looks back to Mokos and wipes his brow, I don't think we should post signs. If we are to tame these lands, that beast needs to join its friends.

Just to double check, the only person with injury damage is Kyras at -4 or -5. Although he did drown twice so did he take extra points for that? Finwik took 19 strain damage, Bjelich took 6 strain and is whatever's left on Mokos strain damage? Rest should heal most of us with one healing spell needed for Kyras. But Bjelich'll hold off until my math has been confirmed.

I don't think it is a good idea to leave the remaining wyrm go free. We should regroup and hunt it down.

You guys are supposed to be tracking strain vs injury (and I have seen none of that done so far if your stat lines are an indication). Kyras went down with 11 injury and Mokos with 9. Any lost HP (ie failed stabilization checks or Con checks to avoid drowning) while in the negatives is also injury and needs to be healed rather than regained via resting.

Without double checking myself, that means Kyras has 13 injury HP that need to be healed and Mokos 11.

And just checking, but do you honestly think that these 5 are the only Tatzlwyrms in the swamp? Or this hex? Or the Stolen Lands? :P

Not at all, hence the helpful signage. As for Bjelich...

Danna speaks passionately to Bjelich and everyone else.Don't be ridiculous! Do you plan to hunt down and kill every wyrm, wolf, lion, and other predator in the land. She scratches between Striker's ears as she says this. That is against nature and I for one will not stand for it! They have just as much right to live their lives as any other of the Gods' creatures in this realm. She then addresses Bjelich specifically and says spitefully, Perhaps you should check with your god regarding his thoughts on this.

Danna had 9 HP of strain that was removed when Bjelich cast his spell.

I thought it obvious to whom my question was addressed to given the rest of the post was responding to Chris' query. :P

Finwik spits out a gob of blood into the muck and glares at his pony. Lot of good you did. Can't even stomp on it? At least you didn't run away I guess. Finwik grabs the reins, collects his crossbow from the ground, and follows in Danna's path to join the others.

Looking at the grisly scene before him, he says We don't look to be in much shape to go hunt anything right now. Nodding at Kyras' limp form, he says Can we get him up on a horse and get the hell out of this swamp? Hopefully go somewhere dry...and warm...and with thick, thick walls? I have a tale to tell and a possible lead on Tig.

He then reaches into his backpack and produces a small flask (cure light wounds). Would this do Kyras any good?
