"Ouch, hot, hot, hot"
With Sobestian's help it looks like I'll be able to extinguish these flames, but nor I know how Aunt Bertine's sauteed trout feels...Note to self, buy crossbow...
After the last of the flames are extinguished Gaelwyn says "Thanks Sobe." and looks back to the goblins to see if they are all down. If they are, he'll start to examine the lines in the floor to see if there's an obvious way across. If not, he may go to full defense to aid in avoiding these missiles.
DM Khel |
Rokdor boops another goblin, leaving it barely standing! Sobestian continues to be helpful, this time putting out the flames on Gaelwyn, who definitely needed a hand. Oldmar puts a javelin through a goblin, dropping it to the stone floor! The last goblin standing, badly wounded by Rokdor’s magical fist, yelps in panic and disappears around the corner.
The passageway goes quiet as the goblin’s footsteps die down, and Ekkie comes up cautiously behind the party. ”You got them!” she whispers fiercely. ”Let’s go, what we waiting for?”
Gaelwyn |
"Anyone here good with traps like this? I have some rope of it helps. "
Gaelwyn examines the floor carefully to see what he can learn.

As Rokdor hesitantly passes her hammer to Oldmar, she and Sobestian notice that on either side of the hallway there appear to be narrow ledges adjacent to the pit, a bit more than a handspan wide. It might be possible to cross the pit on them, but it would take some careful maneuvering. (i.e., Acrobatics checks.)
Oldmar Lucridious |
"I prefer something with an edge," Oldmar returns, patting his axe. "But for this task a hammer might work best."
Taking the hammer in hand, Oldmar mutters something about "stand back now..." and brings it crashing down on the floor in front of him.
As the fake tiles shatter into the pit, Oldmar leans over the edge to gauge its depth and/or spike outfitting.
DM Khel |
Oldmar’s strike is not powerful enough to shatter the entire length of the false cover of the pit. It is strong enough, however, to break many of the tiles on his end of the cover, upsetting the delicate balance of the thing and causing the now heavier end at the far side to swing downwards, effectively opening the whole pit.
Peering down from the edge, the party can see that the pit is about ten feet deep – but they rather wish they hadn’t looked, or smelled. The bottom of the pit is covered with a disgusting mess of rotting garbage, something that must be goblin feces, and a bewildering mix of fungal growths, from pale-white columns as long as Sobestian’s foot to tiny yellow button mushrooms, the size of the tip of Hakotep’s pinkie finger. Naturally, this combination produces a dizzying mix of odors, the sulfurous rot of the garbage blending with the putrid stench of goblin waste, all underlain by the earthy pungency of the fungus. It is not a place one wishes to enter.
On closer (though reluctant) study, Oldmar and Gaelwyn, their senses perhaps heightened by their recent experiences with fire, notice something about the bottom of the pit. It appears to shift slightly every now and then, like there's something moving under it - something as wide as the pit, though perhaps not quite as long.

"What is it down there?" Hakotep asks as he edges a bit closer to take a look. "Maybe we should just find a safe way to get over it without disturbing whatever disgusting creature would live amongst such filth. I have some rope if that will help."
DM Khel |
FIRE!: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Rolled for both rounds, since it can't put itself out.
Oldmar drops a flask of fire on the foul, heaving carpet at the bottom of the bit. It twitches in reaction to the flask breaking on it, but the burning alchemical solution seems to have no effect on it at all.
Knowledge (dungeoneering), Sobestian: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Knowledge (dungeoneering), Rokdor: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
As this happens, both Rokdor and Sobestian recognize the thing in the pit as a slime mold - a revolting ooze that wallows in rot and decay, and is highly resistant to fire.
Gaelwyn |
We can try, though I'm not sure they'd have much effect either. Can we cross on the ledges with rope to help? I'll anchor someone little and graceful if anyone is feeling brave. Otherwise I'll take off my armor and try it myself.

Rokdor's blob of acid lands on the creature and hisses, burning away a portion of the creature's flesh. It twitches wildly and rears up, extending a filthy pseudopod to thrash at the Pathfinders standing closest to the lip of the pit. The slime mold can just reach to strike at Oldmar, but it misses him!

Acid seemed to work, now it's unhappy. From where it is, it can only reach to attack the edge of the pit. Just going to continue using the existing initiative order.

Probably can't see it from where I'm at so Hakotep will just keep a readied action in case it comes into view.

DM Khel |
It's 10' down, so only a reach weapon would reach it. It has 10' reach, so it was able to reach you. This is kind of an odd configuration in which to have this fight. I'll say that anyone in the 10' closest to the pit can see the thing at the bottom (right now, that means everyone but Hakotep and Ekkie), for ranged attacks and such.
Rokdor Goblinbreaker |
"Hmm, that seemed to do something, at least..." mutters Rokdor, flinging another bit of acid into the pit.
Ranged Touch (in melee): 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 4 = -1

*crosses fingers and hopes for super low Dex*
DM Khel |
Your hopes for super low Dex have been realized! Since it's in a pit and reaching up to whack at you guys (at least for the moment), I'm going to say Oldmar doesn't take the -4 penalty for it being in melee when he throws his javelin at it. Because it has reach, however, it does get an AoO when he takes his ranged attack.
Blobs of acid smear the sides of the pit and Sobestian's arrow clatters against the far wall, none of them getting anywhere near the slimy creature within. As Oldmar winds up to throw his last javelin, the ooze extends a section of itself and smashes it into the wall next to the dwarf! Nonetheless, Oldmar keeps his cool and manages to half-throw and half-drop the javelin, piercing the creature clean through - the tip of his weapon can be heard striking the floor underneath the thing! Ekkie continues to hang out at the back of the party, ducking, bobbing and weaving as if she's actually in the fight, but carefully keeping her distance from the moldy slime-thing.

"We're taking too much risk here - let's move back 10 feet from the edge and continue attacking with ranged weapons. If it doesn't come out we'll kill it down there, and I'll attack it if it comes out."
DM Khel |
Going to presume Gaelwyn took a step back, in keeping with his suggestion. Thanks for the damage clarification, Oldmar.
Rokdor’s blob of acid sails into the pit and hits the slime mold with a sizzling hiss, and the head of Sobestian’s arrow tears a long furrow in the field of tiny yellow mushrooms covering it. Oldmar notices that the creature’s last attack on him smeared his arm with a foul goo, which he instinctively wipes off on the stone wall while moving away from the pit. As he steps back, he can see that the monster is a shredded remnant of its original self, but it still strives to kill and devour them all!
From a slightly safer distance from the pit, the party can see the noisome appendages of the slime mold just reach the upper edge, as if it’s trying to pull itself out – but it fail to do so and the pseudopods vanish back over the lip of the pit.

The ragged remnant of the slime mold extends pseudopods up to the lip of the pit. It flails about for a few seconds, then seems to squeeze itself into the corner of the pit and find enough purchase to climb out! It balances itself on the edge of the pit, now close enough for Gaelwyn and Hakotep to attack it!
Hakotep's ball of acid sails over the diminished bulk of the thing, but Gaelwyn's blade slices it cleanly in half, and the two sections slide back into the pit like bits of limp, wet rag.

Let me know what healing and other stuff you want to do and your plan for crossing the pit. Still travelling so posting is a bit spotty.
Oldmar Lucridious |
My original plan was to climb down and back out, but given that it's a garbage chute I don't Oldmar will opt for that. He's willing to take the first try across with the rope if no one else feels well suited to the task. In the meantime:
"Sobestian, dear fellow, would you be so kind?"

"if anyone can spare some healing, I'll be happy to try to cross the pit using the narrow ledge on the left. I can carry a rope with me to help others. "
Gaelwyn strips out of his scale mail to make balancing on the ledges easier, then prepares to cross the gap with a sunroof and a short sword in hand.
