Horatio Flynn
Rain, I already made my move this round, right after Seijiro's attack on the previous page.
Since I can only do a partial move I simply drew more weapons.
I lost my pistol via the grease wand and if I cast a spell it opens me up to AoO.
I would have had my edged weapons out sooner and been hacking at the goo myself, but I thought that wouldn't matter until the duration of the Tanglefoot bag kicked in.
Next round I can at least attempt to attack the ninja in front of me; even if it is a partial move.
That said I guess it's the GM's move at this point.

The fight swings in the opposite direction and you all manage to drop a couple of them. The timely arrival of Cyclone has swung the battle to your advantage.
---------------------------------------------------
Ninja 1 seeing the fight turning away from them, tosses another smoke bomb into the middle of the road before running off.

Correct, miss with shield up.
The fight is swinging the pirates way although the danger was still not over yet. The new cloud appeared obscuring Variel's sight once again from his allies. Taking matters into his own hands, Variel dodges to the side slightly as a sword passes through the space his head occupied just a split second before. Using the near miss as an opportunity Variel recalls to mind a spell. Casting the recently recalled spell Variel's weapon crackles with electricity once again. Variel stabs with his dagger at assassin 3 using e presence of Cyclone to ensure his attack.

Spell combat allows a spell to be cast at the same time as making a normal attack. Combined with spellstrike, a magus can make two weapon attacks suffering the penalties for two weapon fighting. The first attack was with the spell shocking grasp cast and spellstrike using the weapon to deliver the attack. The second attack was the normal attack allowed by spell combat. However I had already cast frostbite adding to my normal attacks via spellstrike, which lasts for 4 attacks. Spent 1 attack last round, 1 combined with shocking grasp, and the third on the 'normal' attack this round. I have one frostbite attack left for next round. Also used 3/5 from my arcane pool.
DM Immortal
Gotcha Variel. Thanks! Like I said I haven't ever played a magus so my knowledge of them is lacking. Second attack hit as well and did damage. That ninja is still up though.
Dhaavan, Looking at the rules again it seems you just need line of effect to summon not line of sight. For instance you could summon while blind (which negates line of sight) but not through a wall of force (where you have line of sight but not line of effect)
Rain Taneththir
Round 5
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Holding her breath as much as possible, Rain attempts to move out of the noxious fumes. She looks around her, trying to determine possible threats and positions of her allies.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Rain with cutlass held before her moves stealthily forward (using the cover of smoke) to F8.
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
GM, I have a question, please. The squares (and radius) where the tanglefoot bags hit Dhaavan, Jiro and Flynn, are they now considered 'difficult terrain' since those three were entangled? I am wondering if this will affect/hamper Rain's movement through the zone of entangled squares?
Seijiro
Seijiro was never entangled - they didn't even throw tanglefoot bags at him. Imm - did Seijiro make his save with a 15 or is he affected, and what is the affect if so? If not, can he move out of the smoke this round?
Rain Taneththir
Okay, sorry Jiro, trying to get my bearings between the tanglefoot bags thrown and the smoke bombs thrown. I think it was Rain, Variel and Flynn entangled and some of you guys were staggered ...? Either way I think Rain can move to the square she has stated in her post (unless of course the GM disagrees lol).
Horatio Flynn
Alas, I am already staggered. Didn't kill number 1, damn.
But you do control Cyclone - I think it's his move to attack the last ninja...
DM Immortal
You are good to go Rain. I have moved you on the map.
A little bit better map of the shackles for your enjoyment. Please ignore all of the black lines.
Variel Nightstorm
|
Dont know if it helps Jiro, but the assassin made a save of 15 in the cloud and was successful. I would think that you should be okay as we'll. First round two bags at Dhaavan, 1 at Flynn, 1 at Rain. None at Variel, Jiro or Camm.
Seijiro
If Seijiro is good to go with a 15 save then he will move to H9 and ready an action to attack vs any foe that comes within reach. Take the rest of the round to survey the situation. which isn't much to see what with all the smoke and the only remaining foe being up on the roof behind the peak of the roof to Seijiro
Rain Taneththir
Round 1 sum up. Let me know if I have made a mistake. Rain, Variel, and Horatio are all entangled. Rain is glued to the floor and can't move. Variel climbed up the side of the building and is now on the roof. Horatio managed to frighten Ninja 2. Seijiro was able to hit Ninja 3 with an arrow.
Variel, this is where it confused me. Immortal said you were entangled after Round 1. I know you are on the roof now.
DM Immortal
wow. I had totally forgotten about that lol. Oh well things worked out anyway.

waiting for eagles, Camm and Horatio correct?
Horatio Flynn
Sort of - Camm took a shot against Ninja 1 - scored 14 damage on it before it ran off. No news on if that hit or did damage, or what before the Ninja ran off; but that was last round.
Technically speaking we are also waiting on Cyclone's attack - as he is the only one in the party who is able to hit Ninja 6, with the possible exception of Dhaavan's Fiendish Eagles.
And as for me - with the penalty I'm under to the Tanglefoot bag which is still on me; the penalties to range, the penalties to shooting into combat, the penalties for the partial cover of the roof, and the potential miss chance - even if roll a natural 20 and proactively employ a Hero Point for the +8 bonus first - I'll still miss by more than 5.
They're out of range for any spell I could cast, and I can only take a move action.
If Cyclone doesn't attack the logical thing would be to skip to your move and just have you finish them. Mathematically none of us can do anything even if we max out our attacks, with the possible exception of the eagles, but again - the math is against them, even when they appear.
Dhaavan
I'm not entirely sure where everyone is right now, but I think i'll pass on the birds this go-round. Lets try a grapple!
Yay questioning prisoners!
All of the sudden, behind Ninja 6 appears a many tentacled beastie, a Fiendish Squid. Out of it's natural element and very unhappy, it latches onto the only thing in front of it
Grapple: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
miss 1-20: 1d100 ⇒ 63
DM Immortal
Only 1 problem with that plan Dhaavan. You can't summon a creature into an environment that doesn't support it. From the SRD "Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them." Nice thought but you are going to need to pick something else. Sorry man.
Dhaavan
OK then, a Giant Spider appears on the edge of the roof, and launches a Web at the Ninja
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
It acts like a net, so Touch AC
Ninja can attempt a DC 14 Escape artist or Str check on its turn to get out as a standard action.
Jack's fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22, forgot to roll it.
Dhaavan concentrates and casts a quick cantrip, Touch of Fatiegue
concentration DC16: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
cantrips count as 1/2 a spell level, right?
at which point Jack darts from the smoke cloud with his talons enchanted with the necromantic touch.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 dodging into range wiht the ninja...
and alights, gently, to deliver Dhaavan's spell
touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 +4 cause of a size bonus, i think...
[edit]that should work?
Variel Nightstorm
|
Does the fatigue from touch of fatigue increase if the guy is already fatigued? At work without my stuff. Frostbite does nonlethal cold and causes fatigue. Just wondering Dhaavan...
Horatio Flynn
Well played again, Dhaavan. But shouldn't both your spider and Jack get flanking with Variel? (They can both flank with Variel because Jack can fly and is Small Sized and therefore flank with Variel on a diagonal with Variel from a 45 degree angle above the spider). And and of course, if those moves don't work - consider this:
-- Notes on squid. Squid are cephalopods of the order Teuthida, which comprises around 300 species. Squid are strong swimmers and certain species can "fly" for short distances out of the water.[2]
That final point would show some evidence that your squid could - theoretically - stay out of water at least long enough for your initial move - assuming that your Amazing Spider (man!) doesn't do the trick, that is ;)
Seijiro
re: flying squid:
"While swimming, the squid open up their mantle and draw in water. Then these squid launch themselves into the air with a high-powered blast of the water from their bodies. Once launched by this jet propulsion, these squid spread out both their fins and their tentacles to form wings. The squid have a membrane between their tentacles similar to the webbed toes of a frog. This helps them use their tentacles as a wing and create aerodynamic lift so they can glide – similar to a well-made paper airplane."
So they need water to launch themselves, and while 'flying', their tentacles are in use and couldn't grapple unfortunately. Nice try though.
Horatio Flynn
Well... maybe it was swimming in the fiendish realm deep in Infernal dark water and sort of "propelled" itself through the foul water - right through the gated summoning opened by Dhaavan - and than right through the air into the Material Plane just in time to land on top of the ninja via a tremendous pulpy squish which - coincidentally - entangled the ninja with it's flabby bulk ;)
Ah - we can dream, though, right?
Still in all; Jack and the spider should be enough to entangle the ninja; pretty soon Dhaavan'll be sending Jack to slay giants!
Okay, that last one was pretty lame - but it's 2:00 AM... lame just happens ;)
DM Immortal
Camm's shot did hit Ninja 1 but was not enough to drop him.
Touch of fatigue specifically states it does nothing against those already fatigued. That said, Dhaavan doesn't know the ninja is fatigued and therefore it is a reasonable action for him to take.
Perfect use of Hover Camm. I was hoping you would do remember that lol.
As Cyclone lives up to his name, the smoke begins to clear while clouds of debris are kicked up as well, blocking sight but no longer choking you. At the same time the winds blow out torches and lanterns along the walls plunging the street into darkness.
Just waiting on Horatio to act if he is going to before moving on.
Seijiro
Seijiro creates dancing lights, sending one of them up to the roof to assist Variel's low light vision and two hovering and bouncing about in the street so the rest of them could see as well.
Horatio Flynn
Horatio takes a free action to laugh at the supposed "Darkness" that might have happened via missing torches...
His fingers grip his weapon a bit more tightly - his magic weapon - his enchanted short sword - which glows like a torch with a magical light in a wide radius unaffected by wind.
But, as Horatio is unable to do anything else to the remaining ninja, and he is still trapped by the Tanglefoot bag, and as all the other ninja have fled - except the one that is no doubt entangled by the Infernal spider, something he will discover soon in any case as Jack can see fairly well in the dark, and so can Variel, who can make an AoO against the ninja if he attempts to flee... he will take another moment to engage in a more direct free action...
"That filth - he is entangled by your web, yes?" he calls out, hoping that either the Spider or Jack can answer him about the ninja.
He will add to Variel -
"Oye - Nightstorm - you alright up there? Is everyone okay?" he calls out, knowing he himself was hurt, but guessing others such as Seijiro may be worse off, and probably Nighstorm as well.
At the least, Horatio is confident that Variel would have seen the ninja crouched under the weight of the spider with his elven eyes, because even when the torches blew out, there was still enough ambient lighting from his magical short sword for Variel to be able to see with his elven eyes.
Still - with one formal action to go - he will reach to Camm and place his hand on the man's next arrow - and cast "light" on that arrow as well, trusting Camm can fire the arrow to give them more light, if needed.
DM Immortal
Sounds good. Wrap around to Ninja 6
Escape Artist vs DC 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 10 - 1 = 28 SUCCESS
Ninja 6 manages to extricate himself from the web and steps off the edge falling 65' into the water below.
Acrobatics to reduce falling damage 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 FAIL
Water is atleast 10' deep which means the first 20' of falling damage doesn't apply
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 3) = 14
Anyone that looks over sees him fall to the water and land with a huge splash. He goes under for a moment before surfacing facedown a different shade of red emanating and mingling with the red of the water.
Seijiro
Seijiro keeps the bobbing lights hovering about the street area and one around the roof for Variel to see by. He sighs deeply and put his weapon away as he realizes all the foes seem to be completely gone.
He shakes his head at the sight of the dead foe in the water. "He'd rather die than be captured. To be expected. He'd never tell us anything useful about who sent them even if we HAD caught him. They are fiercely loyal to whoever hires them."
Dhaavan
"Dammit all to the Nine!" Dhaavan snarles as he banishes his summonid spider with an angry wave of his hand. "Well, I guess we search the corpses and see if we can get any sign of who sent 'em. Could have been Aspes or that monkey's cronies. Jiro, you got garb like that, you know what that might 'ave been about?"
"Camm, think ya can get Cyclone ta grab the corpse out the water afore it sinks?"
Jack quickly flits to the sorcerer, and wriggles into his shirt, balling up and turning into a tattoo, hiiding from his master's wrathful mood at loosing the chance to acquire a prisoner.
Seijiro
Where I come from, they are called ninja. They are assassins for hire, usually working for noble houses. They could be from the Aspes consortium, or perhaps someone else who thought our reputations were worthy of challenge. Most odd though to find them here in the west
He starts searching bodies of any in the street, if any.
Horatio Flynn
Hoartio will move quickly – and do the following:
1. He will search the bodies of the ninja near him (if any) – stripping it of any magical goods and gear – and pretty much any gear whatsoever, tossing it into a bundle for Seijiro’s handy haversack.
2. He will cast “Cure Light Wounds” on himself – and prepare for anyone else who may need it.
Cure Light Wounds
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
3. He will pick up his pistol and stuff it into his holster, currently holding his sword for light.
4. During all of this – he will make the following statements as he is moving:
”It’s very likely they were Apses – we only told everyone in sundry that we hit their ship and we’re currently reselling their gear in town. They maybe put two and two together and just wanted us to pay for our actions… so it could simply be an independent action to enact vengeance.”
He spits once.
”But I don’t believe it was an independent action of vengeance – it was too well planned and coordinated. They knew exactly what to hit us with, and what gear to carry, and which gear would be best against certain members of our crew.”
”That reminds me…”
”Dhaavan – the basterd who hit my weapon had a magic wand; he tumbled in the drink to the south. Can you get Jack to cast the spell "Detect Magic" over there so we can see where the wand is under the water and go get it? It’s likely valuable.”
He turns his eyes back to Camm.
”If Cyclone hadn’t shown up when he did; we’d all be dead – they would have finished off Nighstorm on the roof; greased the ground where we were standing with that wand, and just hit us again and again at range.”
”So not only did you help save our necks – but your mate there turned the tide,” he adds, with nod to Cyclone.
”But maybe we shouldn’t talk about this any more here, eh?”
”I think it would be better if we went back to our ship and got on board behind a deckwatch, some closed doors, and some extra protection.”
”If they knew where to find us in the street – it’s a safe bet they not only know our ship, but they at least know the rooms you had in what tavern. If you go back there now – you may wake up with your throat cut. And anyhow, I want to make sure the ship hasn’t been messed with…”
He turns a quick glance at Seijiro –
”Nay, lad... It ain’t taht odd to find them here – in fact, it’s damn right likely, if you think about it.”
”We just hit a ship with an Apses agent on it – who had a package that he kept, and we let live. But that bloody bugger was from the east, sure as sunrise, and he had just left port from Bloodcove, which is where we are now.”
”There’s a good chance these guys and that guy are all working with the same crew. After we resold them their own gear, not to mention letting that monkey-whore live - there’s good reason to think they’ve at least spying on us, and know who we are, and what we’re up too – and what skills we have, and what our strengths and weaknesses are.”
”Well – what do you all say? Should we finish searching these scum and then take the gear we find back to the ship? It’s been less than a minute since they attacked – we can leg it fast, in a pinch. But I don’t want to be out in the streets longer than needed.”
He gives a last look at the group – awaiting their answer, and makes a quick comment.
”They say Dead men tell no tales – aye; but that’s just because “they” never met a good cleric. We fetch a corpse back with us to a cleric, we can get answers, if you want to try it… I’m game either way.”
Sum Up
GM:b What is the sum total of gear/goods we found on the bodies; noting that we would have used “Detect Magic” to find the ambient glow of magical gear such as the wand shining even from under the water. Not to mention their masterwork weapons, potential potions – the whole work.
Does anyone else need healing? I am guessing Variel – but I have only two more spells left – so let me know.
Horatio wants to talk about all these details and what they mean; but he wants to get back to the ship first. Get inside, check it for any issues, and make sure that everyone is okay – and have the conversation in private, behind closed doors, and with a deck watch to cover our backs while we heal. Anyone else interested?
Horatio will invite Camm and Cyclone to come with them at this time. Camm's mixed up in it now, and leaving him alone on the street after the attack just doesn’t seem right or decent, especially as he and Cyclone did help.
Finally – is it worth taking a ninja corpse to a Cleric and pay for “Speak with Dead” to get answers? Or should we chalk it up to “not worth it”? It’s up to you guys – I’m game either way.
Okay – that’s it. I’ll see you guys later tonight!
Variel Nightstorm
|
Seeing the last assassin take his own life before being captured, Variel forcibly sheaths his dagger. Grabbing first one body and then the next he throws them over the side of the building into the street so the others an search the bodies for clues. He hears Dhaavan ask Camm to have cyclone get the body in the water so he dismisses that body. As Variel walks over to his cutlass he calls out to Flynn, Not too bad up here. Might need some help once I get down. They got a couple of good shots in. What I want to know is who these bastards are and who sent them.
Variel stood talking as he reaches his cutlass. With a wrench he frees the blade and sheaths it. Take twenty on strength check.
Once it is free, Variel calls down again. His temper is up and the blood is still coursing through his body. Standing up,straight on top of the roof he doesn't care who of the locals hear him. I want those bodies kept as well so we can hang them from the bow of our ship while we are still in port. I want to make an example of them to show to others what it means to mess with us. That sit alright with all of you or do we have any problems with that? In the morning I will be going around letting the townsfolk know what happened and they can see for themselves that no one should mess with us.
Once the roof is clear, Variel will climb down carefully. Once down he sees how everyone else has fared making sure they ate fit to go before finally leaving the area.
DM Immortal
As you all begin to search the bodies several things become clear. It appears they were all kitted out exactly the same. They are all human of Minkaian descent and nondescript enough as to be near forgettable.
3 potions of Cure Light Wounds
3 MW Wakizashis
29 MW Shuriken
2 tanglefoot bags
3 suits of MW Studded Leather
3 Shinobi Shozoku Suits
3 Blowguns with 3 doses of Drow Sleep Poison (not 3 each. 3 total or 1 each)
You are unable to see the Wand with detect magic for several reasons. 1 it is under more than 60' of water which is the range for detect magic (this section of the harbor is about 75-80' deep) 2. the water is blood red due to being filled with silt from the river making it near impossible to see any sort of distance through. If you wish to try and dive down to the bottom you might be able to find it but that will be difficult and take time.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Jiro is closest to her and she addresses him, "They all have the same markings here on their necks. Can you make them out, Jiro?"
She hears Variel call down from the roof and Flynn's words also. She stands quietly, beside the dead ninjas and her comrades.
Once Variel makes his way down from the roof, she will turn to him and speak, "I have a little healing magic. If either you or Jiro require it, please let me know."
"And Var, I have no problem with what you mean to do with their bodies. If you believe the demonstration is required, then I shall abide by your decision."
Seijiro
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
"Ah yes, I see the markings. It is Minkaian sort of, but not a real Minkaian word, it phonetically reads 'Shanxia'." He looks pointedly at Variel as he continues...
"This fight went far too easily. Ninja are usually more focused and skilled than this. It is almost more as if they were testing us, rather than actually trying to kill us... and they seemed to be only after one person really, not all of us as a group. I don't think this was Aspis Consortium, and I doubt it was retaliation for our acts of piracy."
Yes, it is Aspis, not Apses
He turns to Rain and shakes his head slightly. "I'm uninjured, they didn't seem interested in me at all for some reason... perhaps because I am Minkaian as well, or maybe just my good fortune. I'm not complaining."
He turns to address Variel again. "I have no issue with whatever you plan to do with their bodies. It's of no concern to me really, but I doubt it will act as any deterrent to a future attack. I think it was just a test, and they probably WILL try again someday regardless. Someone determined enough to send ninja on such a mission, won't give up easily."
Horatio Flynn
Hoartio’s eyes narrow at the mention of Shanxia, and they flick quickly to Variel on the roof.
Gathering the pile of loot together he passes it over to Seijiro for the Handy Haversack.
Looking at the poison, he pauses.
”I know a bit about poison – Jiro-san – you ever hear of Drow having much dealing with Minkai folk?” he muses almost to himself.
”I know Drow got problems with elves in general,” he adds, glancing between Variel and Rain ”and now we got pretty heavy circumstantial evidence that maybe Drow are connected to the hit.”
His mind ranges over the combat a bit.
”You know – when it comes down to it – we were all paralyzed, stunned, or pretty much incapacitated – none of us was really chopped bad; though we may have been – excepting for Nightstorm.”
”If I was running that bloody raid, I would have entangled Variel – stepped back and pinched him with ranged weapons; and slaughtered the rest of us with these there throwing stars… hell, we couldn’t hit worth a damn from range anyway. But they didn’t do that, did they?” he adds, looking around at the group.
He shrugs.
’But that’s all the talking on this matter I’ll do here, I reckon.”
”Our ship might be in trouble and we keep up this conversation in public, we maybe get more trouble soon, too.”
He glances at Variel.
”I’m all for taking the heads, aye – besides, it comes to mind that Minkai folk cremate their dead, on account of all the wetlands there, and anyhow – I never saw, er – I never heard of a Minkai graveyard.”
”I figure if we take the head, that’ll shame ‘em enough – but I was hoping for answers on where they came from.”
Horatio pauses, seeing the tattoo on their skin.
Taking out a knife, he quickly cuts the piece of skin off the corpse which holds the tattoo, to analyze it later for further clues.
Healing Check to perform the Surgery to remove the skin
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Seeing that no one is interested in taking the dead to a cleric and paying for the spell “Speak With Dead” – he won’t push the issue.
Horatio turns to Camm.
”Like I said, mate – I’d rather talk more on the ship. You did us a favor, and are up your hips in our own muck, more’s the pity. But anyhow, my thanks to you again,” he adds, a little embarrassed that – for no fault of his own – Camm is now mixed up in their trouble, had endured bloodshed and assault, and was at the least instrumental in helping his comrades survive – but no one had thanked him.
”I want to be back aboard ship, I never planned on being in this berg after nightfall anyhow. But before I go, I’m going to go try to find that bloody wand,” he adds with a growl.
Hoartio will move around to the edge of the water where the body fell in. He’ll take a pebble and cast “Light” on that (switching the Light spell from Camm’s arrow to the pebble) – then he’ll throw the pebble to the bottom of the water. He’ll wait until it hits the bottom. Keeping his sword out, he’ll dive into the water.
I can make the swim checks to get to the bottom, if you need me to. But the DC is 10 and my Swim bonus is +9. I am making “Standard Actions” to move 15 feet a round. As the water is 75 feet deep; that should take me 5 rounds, or roughly 30 seconds, and there is a light source at the bottom (though muted through the silt) and I’m holding a lighted sword, I’ll be able to get to the bottom, search – than come back up, all in a period of 12 rounds (My Constitution score – and the exact time I need to get to the bottom and do a search, find the wand, pick it up, and return to the top.
Not entirely sure how it works – but I’ll also be casting “Detect Magic” before I dive in. While it needs a somatic gesture to cast – it is maintained 1 minute a level by “concentrating”. I will be concentrating while swimming – and hopefully be able to see the aura of the wand as I get close to it.
When I reach the bottom, I will make a Perception Check to find it – and than I will come back up. With a net total of 12 rounds at most – this shouldn’t take me more than a minute to do – provided I make the Perception Check to find a glowing wand.
If I can’t find it, I will repeat the effort. Please let me know of the results.
Perception Check when I get to the bottom (hoping that the Detect Magic spell can work to aid me – and, for fun, I’ll add in a Archeologist’s Luck point to the roll as a Swift Action when I get to the bottom.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Edit: Almost a shame to get a Natural 20 on my Perception Check to find the wand... But I reckon that should be good enough to find it.
