Horatio glances from Rajah's aid to see the Lord of the Rock moving to aid them.

"Many thanks, your Grace," he says to him with a respectful nod of his head.

Sorry, one of my favorite characters from The Count of Monte Cristo was the smuggler - his response to the Count after the thing in the crypts... good times! I had to work that in at some point :)

This currently takes us to only 20 - which is pretty low; but Horatio does have a trick up his sleeve in a pinch; but right now she's had Chanel Energy used on her earlier, she's also had Dhaavan's Healing and our own medicine - if the text wasn't enough to boost the rolls then I may have to add more information/date later (Rajah, in this case I'll likely be dipping into another series about a doctor/investigator that was set in the dark ages called Cadfael and - if that doesn't work, I'll have to borrow some of the medical tips from another show (this one will be about a cop who enlists the aid of a doctor to solve crimes; but this one is set in the Civil War, it's called Copper. Both shows have the advantage of using "Historical" medicine that actually worked :)

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to do more earlier, I was another Skype Conversation with a client (they live in China, the time thing is complicated) - but now I have to go to work, and after work I'm meeting with family - but I should have something else up later tonight, if we need it - but here's hoping we don't :)

Before he continues to aid the fallen woman, Horatio pauses - but only a moment - to ascertain her current status...

GM; Horatio may up the ante with one of our hero points to aid her, if necessary; and I'll likely also add more writing if it's necessary to augment the process. But before I do either of those things, how is she currently doing now?

spend a hero point as you have a chance now with the aid of your companions.

Horatio you see that the other treatments helped but she is still experiencing severe distress. At this point she begins seizing as the intracranial pressure increases. You are sure that you are going to need relieve the pressure now in order to save her.

-----------------------------------------------------

While Horatio, Rajah, and Dhaavan are working, the rest of the crew preps to enter the storm. Unfortunately those working on the female officer do not think they will be able to finish before hitting the eye, or if they do it will be VERY close!

As the group works on the woman, Amen-set watches Horatio’s attempts.

”Oh my hatey-a', it is a certainty that this officer is one thy wish to aid; yet we near dark waters and fell storms – what spurns thy desire to do so much for her?” she asks as Horatio works.

Horatio uses the scalpel to delicately cut into the scalp and then skull as tenderly as he can.

”Her captain was known to support certain honorable groups. It’s likely that the crew of her ship – or at least the officers, probably this one – also support such groups. It would be good if we did what we could to aid someone who is aligned to such honorable groups.”

He glances up at Amen-set.

”Bottom line – it would make me happy,” he says to her and she blanches, then instantly does what she can to aid him.

Because I’m stupid and I forgot to have Amen-set try an “Aid Check” on the roll, too…

Amen-set’s Aid Check on Heal
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Horatio does what he can with his Healing, but senses his efforts could use work…

Horatio casts Gallant Inspiration and gains 2d4 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5 to his earlier Healing Skill.

EDIT: This currently makes the total Heal Check a 27 instead of a 20.

GM - is the Hero Point still necessary, or does the 27 do the trick?

Through the combined ministrations of your team, you manage to stabilize Maddie and get her into a bunk and strapped down just as you hit the Eye. The impact is jarring, reminiscent of the times your ship has collided with another ship. A howling, like the banshees of a thousand hells issues forth from the storm. Winds whip through the rigging, threatening to tear the sails from the yardarms, before abruptly switching direction and pulling the other way. A greenish glow is the only light you can see from the sun filtering down to you, shot through with bolts of white lightning.

You have entered the Eye...

As they entered the Eye itself, Rain's senses kicked in fast and furiously and she tried to use all her knowledge of such waters/climes to ensure she could handle/drive the ship and keep it upright, from colliding with another vessel and/or from splintering as they sailed through this section of the course. She called out to the riggers to be mindful of the sails and all available eyes looking out over the dangerous, green-lit sky/sea and calling out what they see to her. She felt the bite of the howling winds and watched the streaks of lightning - hoping she could manoeuvre the Lady and not be struck by it.

Immortal, do you need any other rolls from Rain at this time?

Variel lashes a rope around himself and orders the crew to do the same. Shouting to be heard over the gale force winds, Fasten yourselves before you get swept over. Everyone at the ready. Relay orders from Rain to those further out. Keep the sails from snapping the lines! Hold fast and pray we get through this quickly!

As difficult as the task was though Variel had confidence in Rain and the rest of the sailors. For now there was nothing for him to do but wait and see if anyone needed his help. Until then he stood by Rain and tried to be an aid to her.

Rain is managing to keep the ship going with the help of the crew, Horatio and Amen-set managing to help with the wheel and altering some of the rigging to make the sailing a little easier but it is taking every ounce of skill Rain has to make this work.

Horatio watches Rajah aid in the sailing near the cannon.

He knows that - typically - in such a storm the best practice would be to have all the sails reefed so that the wind doesn't snap the masts and carry them clean off the ship.

However, as this is a race he also knows that they'll have to have the sails unfurled for as much safe speed as possible and he curse mentally at this problem, yet does what he can to help.

For himself, he is on a life line which is tied to the base of the main mast, allowing himself roughly a twenty foot radius from the main mast before the rope pulls tight. If he slips or is blown, the rope should hold him securely enough.

For now he'll do what he can to aid the mates by making sure that the lines are given enough slack wen necessary so they don't pull so hard that they tear apart in the wind.

He'll also make sure that a team is sent below to the pumps and any excess water is being pumped from the bilges so that the ship doesn't flounder in the storm, or sink outright.

Meantime, he makes sure that he has his hatchet ready; if the mast snaps then when it goes hurling off the ship then it will likely tug on the rigging and possibly pull the ship below the waves and he won't chance that...

Damn you Master and Commander...

For now he'll do what he can to Aid via Profession Sail -
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Amen-set is equally bound to the main mast with a similar life line with equal length of radius...

A massive wave washes over the ship and slides across the deck, making the footing very difficult. Rain manages to avoid the worst of it, meaning if you weren't tied in the wave would only knock you off your feet.

The deck has become extremely slippery and difficult to traverse. Any movement will need a dc 10 acrobatics check or you will fall prone.

While maneuvering away from the wave, the rudder becomes jammed! Rain you are currently unable to steer!

You need to stay at the wheel but someone needs to fix the rudder. Spells such as warp wood might work, but craft Carpentry would be best! Also you will get a bonus for ingenuity in your description (NOT NECESSARILY FOR LENGTH BUT ORIGINALITY OF THOUGHT! lol). I will be incorporating modifiers for the environment.

Horatio casts an ironically dry gaze at the heavens, surprised it was the wave and not the pouring rainstorm which made the deck slippery, but either way, he's glad he's tied to the lifeline...

GM - do we know where the problem with the rudder occurred? In other words; is it the cable, or is the wood itself cracked/splintered, or is there something else? Knowing the origin of the problem will likely help out when trying to solve the problem.

If at all possible, can we get Scotty to run a diagnostic? :p

Feeling the ship heave under the crash of the wave causes Horatio to slide on the deck, but luckily he is able to grab the rope and pull it tight and prevents himself from slipping too far.

Glancing aft at Rain, he calls out to her -

That last is for flavor, mainly - basically just trying to find out where the problem with the rudder originated and how we can fix it. The thing I'm wondering about is - where specifically is the issue with the rudder?

If it's the rudder itself that means we'd have to go aft behind the helm and lower ourselves down to almost sea level and then try to fix the area there, as that's where the damage is done. That would be very tricky as most of us have limited movement with our lifelines - or outright dangerous as it's a hell of a thing to move on a ship when it's slick (trust me; both I and the GM were on a ship once together, and while the deck wasn't tilted under the full press of sails, I can say from experience that just getting down the hatch to below decks was tricky enough; God only knows what it would be like to rig up something which would put us close enough to cast a spell or use a mundane repairs).

If - on the other hand - it was a snapped cable between the wheel and the rudder, then we could repair the cable while we're still on the main deck without fear of going over the side.

At this point I have a few ideas and hunches; but I don't know what to offer/suggest. Make Whole has a range of 25 Feet +5 feet per level, so we could use that if we were on the quarterdeck facing the rudder - but Mending only has a range of 10 feet; so unless the damage was 10 feet away, we may be in trouble (unless were below decks and could mend something through the ship's deck; in which case all we'd have to do is go below deck to stand 5 feet from where the broken rudder is and cast a magic spell safely; it would take a bit of time, but it would be a lot safer...

Like I said; I have some ideas but for now I'm waiting to know a bit more before acting...

Variel hears the shouts of the rudder stuck. With the wave causing the damage it was either something stuck on the rudder itself or the lines were snapped down below. Rain, can you turn the wheel at all? If not so the likely it is a line that snapped. Hoping it is the line Variel shouts for Horatio, Amen-set, and Piper. Head below first and hopefully it is just a line that snapped. If there is nothing wrong then we have bigger problems.

Dhaavan, we need to know if the rudder itself is ok. Can you summon something intelligent to look underwater?

Sweet!

As he makes his way back aboard, he collapses upon the deck, coughing out that extra bit of water that he managed to involuntarily swallow. Accepting the hand offered by Amen-Set, "Thank you," he says as he rises and brushes off the sleeves of his waterlogged tunic out of habit. He then straightens his collar and holds his head up in a proper manner, looking over at Variel. "I believe she is fixed, Captain," he says, giving a slight nod and a thumbs up while grinning.

He then turns back to Amen-Set, "A near thing indeed. And I would've never succeeded without such fantastic assistance. Thank you again, milady," he says with a smile, nodding. He then carries his soaked-to-the-bone self back to the gunnery, tying himself back down.

She nods in response, pulling the main of her damp hair behind her and ringing it out.

However, despite the chill and the wind she seems to be unaffected by it; as if she is able to disregard the effects of the weather with her will alone.

"Who can say what a Man's Fate shall be - until the end?" she says in response, seeming to act quite nonchalant about his praise for her support, yet the sudden blush in her cheeks suggests she is genuinely surprised and pleased by what he said.

He stops a moment and turns back to her, a look of thought upon him before, "Who indeed, milady, who indeed? A fair question if there ever was one. Truly 'food for thought' as they say," he says with a smile before turning back and continuing on to the gunnery.

Amen-set raises her eyebrows in surprise at his response, then lets out a short bark of laughter and a wide grin graces her lips.

"Aye! If we two are not slain this day by hand of Sea or Sky then mayhap we may ponder such things further," she responds with a loud voice, the sound of waves and wind still blowing hard, yet they those elements do not seem to diminish her spirit.

Then she moves toward Horatio, who is still doing what he can to maintain his location safely by the mainmast and then does what she can to continue to aid him.

Don't forget I need acrobatics checks to move in the wind and storm and slick deck. Also a reminder to those who can fly that the wind is extremely strong right now. Flying would be a bad idea. Especially since you are currently in a windstorm with gusts of hurricane force winds.

Amen-set turns from her position at the guns and watches Rajah...

"Thou art nimble indeed, goodly sir! Would that I could cut the throats of my enemies as surely as thy can cut a rug..." she adds with a bright grin as Horatio just sighs loudly and shakes his head at her words.

Variel could not help but admire the efforts of Rajah as he lowered himself to fix the rudder. It took guts and skill to accomplish that task. AS Rajah raised himself up after fixing the rudder Variel clapped the man on the back. That was one heck of a job there. Besmara blessed us indeed when that sea serpent swallowed you only to have you fall upon our deck. The cannon shot at the turtle, the aid you gave Horatio and now fixing the rudder. You have earned your place at our side truly. Variel casts prestidigitation on the man to dry him off. Get something warm in you now after that heroic display. We will need your efforts again if I am not mistaken with this storm raging.

Variel will remain by Rain as usual.

Grinning, he nods. "All in a day's work, Captain," he says with a wink. "Once we're clear of this beast of a storm," he looks up in the sky at the Eye, "I'll be more than glad to do exactly that, my good man!"

Just managing to keep his feet, he looks back at Amen-set, smiling at her joke as he plays along and gestures with a playful bow.

Amen-set claps her hands gaily at the sally, her grin widening; clearly ignoring the storm, as if she was consciously refusing to let the weather dampen her spirits.

"It was well said; thou possess cunning in battle and great skill besides. Further, my heart yearns for the chance for us to spill blood together as allies," she says with her usual eager enthusiasm at the prospect of combat.

Then she returns the bow to him with courtesy as Horatio pauses from his work to watch her, his eyes flicking to Rajah, then to Dhaavan, then back to Rajah with a thoughtful gaze, his expression looking less like a hardened, weather-bitten sailor on a fighting ship on the high seas and - rather - suddenly like a father carefully appraising something with a stern eye...

Whether Amen-set noticed his look or not is not clear, for she instantly turns her gaze to the waters around them as if searching for threats to fight and kill.

Horatio watches her for a moment, then his eyes return to study Rajah, but he says nothing, though his actions now seem somehow distracted for some reason, as if something else is on his mind.

Rain, can you turn the wheel at all?

She shook her head, "The rudder must be jammed for I cannot steer."

She stood, wings tightly furled against her body, vigilant by the compromised Wheel for the time it took Rajah, with the tools given to him by Amen-set, to correct the issue with the rudder. Once word was given it was fixed, she tried the Wheel and found movement had been returned.

"I can steer again," she called out to Variel and the others. "Thank you," she briefly responded with raised voice to Rajah and Amen, for the wind was loud around her/the ship. Then with a keen concentration, Rain turned her focus back to the helm and attempted to gain the ground they had lost, even as close as they were to the thrashings and lashings of the maelstrom that was the Eye.

The next section of the race requires you to sail through the two concentric rings of Sharkskin Reef and around the massive spire of rock known as Pinnacle Atoll before going back through the reef and making your way south out of the hurricane.

Rain I will need 4 DC 35 sailing checks to maneuver through the reef and around the Atoll.

While the piloting is up to Rain, he himself is worried more about Harrigan's ship and how fast she is closing on them.

It seemed that the race just would not end as 1 obstacle was completed and another was immediately before them. Still they had weathered the storm of the eye thus far and that bode well for them. Briefly Variel gave a passing thought to all those other ships who did not have such an able helmswoman as Rain. Have they all sunk or lie adrift in the eye or did they wisely turn back. There was not any time to ruminate longer though as the ring or spires was before them.

Rain, there off the starboard side seems to be a wider gap in the rocks. Your eyes are better than mine though.

(An aside: Does someone want to get Rain a Headband of Inspired Wisdom +2 for a wedding gift? ;) LOL)

Rain's eyes took in the scope of the natural obstacle field ahead. With Variel and Jiro instructing her from their various vantages and her own determination, Rain stared down the sea and under her breath vowed, "You shall not defeat me now." Her turquoise eyes fixed on Sharkskin Reef and the Pinnacle Atoll and she worked the Wheel, turning with each instruction given to her by Variel and Jiro; manoeuvring the Lady through the concentric rings and then cautiously and expertly around the massive spire of rock - sailing south, out of the hurricane's wrath.

She exhaled and realised she'd been holding her breath during the delicate/tricky manoeuvres. She turned to Variel and gave him a relieved smile and through the message link thanked both he and Jiro up in the Nest. "Thank you for being my additional eyes - it surely made the difference. I do not want to think of what could have happened had we crashed or scraped against the reef in the middle of a hurricane."

Horatio's eyes flick toward the foredeck and he watches the prow crash through the dark waters as the Pilot-Major adjusts the course heading.

Then he turns his gaze aft and continues to peer into the storm, trying to place Harrigan's location as well as attempt to gauge what plot, plan or ploy the whoreson may have for them.

We're ahead, and it looks like we may even be winning - for now - but that can't last... Harrigan's the sort that will stop at nothing to take what he wants, including vengeance...

He turns to Rajah, Amen-set and gives a quick glance toward Dhaavan, too.

"Be ready for anything, I can't believe that sod is going to let us keep the lead unmolested," he says with a fierce glow in his eyes.

You can't see Harrigan's ship anywhere. Total concealment due to wind, rain, and sea beyond 30' from the ship.
