Tsadok smiles and says All in good time good Captain...what is your name again? Laughing he has the crowd begin to move to the other ship. He says over his shoulder without breaking stride Are you scurvy swabs coming?

Variel gives a bow with a flourish, Captain Variel Nightstorm of the Dread Lady. Clearly you have heard of my as you were sent for us. As for us coming along, how could we not with you providing such an escort to us. Indeed, I did not expect to be pampered by one such as you. Your master Bonefist must think highly of us if he requires you to attend to us. Variel continues to smile as he talks hoping that everything is taken in a friendly jest.

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

Tsadok turns and looks genuinely confused for a second before returning to his smug demeanor and saying No one sent for you Captain Darkdrizzle. But that is immaterial let's get this farce underway. I'm eager to see one of you fall to your death. One more thing, if you speak that familiarly in the Captain's presence you'll be lucky to lose your tongue let alone the chance for a letter. He then continues to the other ship while the majority of the crowd jeers at you.

Sense Motive 15:
He genuinely doesn't seem know what your talking about in regards to you being summoned.

Sense motive 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Derp, not happening

Shrugging his shoulders Variel responds obliquely, If you say so but there are 50 of us that will say otherwise. And that is Captain Nightstorm to you. When I speak to the Hurricane King I will show the respect he is due but on my own ship I am a free man and will act as I see fit. That is the right of any free captain.

Human - (Status: normal) Varisian Sorcerer 5 (HP: 56/56, AC:21(14/19[+2]) /F:8,R:8,W:9 / MP: 5/5 / Init. +2 / Perc. +5/6(3))(Jack's Perc: +13/+15)

Reports abut stuff we've found out, :

So apparently, the free-captains don't much care for their king, which makes sense, considering they're all pirates, so tread carefully around him. But aside from that, there's not much to be known about the trials the mate reports with a shrug

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (20) + 20 = 40
to smooth things over, and get the captains liking us a little more... layin it on pretty thick

Then again, what would fifty men be to Kerdak Bonefist, eh? the First mate says, with a shrug, the striking young man easily garnering attention as he takes a step forword. He starts playing to the crowd, I look around here and see Free captains and their crews. Reavers, Raiders, Besmara's best all. Merchants and Marines quake when they see your colors bearing down on em. I see men who would balk against any fool who thought to impose his will on them, and make that poor fool regret it for the rest of his short life, am I right? Nobody here's a lapdog, no simpering children to cling to a mother's skirts! he shouts out, playing to the crowd. Basically saying only the toughest sonofab@&#+ out there would presume to call himself king of these sailors, because any less that that would find themselves dead real quick.

And we know what kind of power it takes, he says addressing Goldtooth now to command the respect of men such as these and yourself. As my Cap'n says, we will show yer Captain what respect is due, as an insult or disrespect to Bonefist is an insult to any that follow him, and Dhaavan wants to make sure the Halforc knows he's not being insulted.

We appreciate the warning, tho, don't mistake that. But honestly, if we're fool enough to piss off the Hurricane kind, we deserve what we get he finishes, throwing a smile at his fellow officers that says, don't get me killed again, thankyouverymuch

I do love a good farce moving to the target ship.

Horatio listens to this man speak, and considers carefully the tone and inflection of the words.

Sense Motive
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

His eyes narrow thoughtfully and he turns back to look at the others on the main deck.

Figures… that invitation hit our deck barely a day or so after we reached The Rock. Still don't get how it got to us so quickly... unless maybe it’s a trap.

His eyes flick back to watch the lads on the ship and he studies them with a critical eye, then he turns to watch the crowd with an appraising eye then he notes that it seems that the officers are moving across to the second ship.

He whispers softly to Variel –

In Elven:

”This villain is assuredly sincere when he speaks that he has heard nothing of the invitation. It is possible that such and invitation may have rather been orchestrated as a ruse to lure us here under false pretexts for some darker purpose; be cautious, my friend.”

At this point he scowls, realizing that the “invitation” to the other ship was only for officers; which means that he’ll likely have to be leaving Amen-set behind, which vexes him as – if it is a trap, he’d rather have a little extra backup then none.

However, as both ships are moored rather closely together he requests that Piper goes below to guard their quarters but sends Amen-set aloft to the Fighting Top with the musket. If any foul play unfolds, he instructs her to fire the musket so as to alert them to trouble.

He hopes that the others will make similar requests of the other trustworthy folk before leaving.

Then he'll follow the others to the other ship.

Tsadok is about to reply to Variel when Dhaavan speaks. After he does so, Tsadok nods his head like "that is more like it" before finally getting to the other ship and boarding it with the crowd. You all follow onto the ship as well, looking it over. It is a two masted square rigged brig.

Tsadok turns to the crowd and says For the first task, we need to see if one of these bilge-sucking mangy cockroaches can beat an experienced pirate in climbing the rigging and setting a sail solo. No flight magic or summoning creatures to do it for you and that sort of nonsense. Just skill against skill alone! So who among ye is man enough to take on Haines Boyne? Haines is a serious looking human with graceful movements that look like they would be good for sailing or swordfighting. He moves to the mizzenmast, leaving whoever you pick to go to the foremast.

Tsadok Goldtooth

Ok so here is how it's going to work. There is going to be a series of skill checks to determine who wins the race. Whoever you all select will be required to climb 60 feet up to the top spar and then make your way along the yard, untying the sail as you go. The yard extends 30 feet on each side and each side has two knots that must be taken care of at 15 feet and 30 feet. Once you get to the yard arm you can either climb out to the knots dc 10 for normal climb (1/4 speed) or dc 15 for accelerated (1/2 speed), or you can use acrobatics to walk along the yard arm to each knot dc 15 (1/2 speed) or dc 25 (full speed).

So here are the checks I need in order:
------------------------------
Climb checks DC 10 for the initial 45 feet
------------------------------
climb checks DC 15 for the final 15 feet
------------------------------
Climb or Acrobatics to move along the yard arm to the first 15'
------------------------------
profession Sailor to untie the knot dc 15 (if you make dc 18 on this first roll it prevents the rest of the profession sailor rolls from being more difficult)
------------------------------
Climb or acrobatics 15' to get to the 30' end
------------------------------
Profession sailor to untie the knot dc 15 (dc20 if the first profession sailor was less than 18)
------------------------------
climb or acrobatics 45' to get to the 15' on the other side
------------------------------
Profession sailor to untie the knot dc 15 (dc20 if the first profession sailor was less than 18)
------------------------------
climb or acrobatics 15' to get to the final 30' knot
------------------------------
Profession sailor to untie the knot dc 15 (dc20 if the first profession sailor was less than 18)
------------------------------
Acrobatics roll
------------------------------
Reflex save

Whoever does the task, I need ALL the checks in the same post in the order that I put above. If it isn't in the order I'm going to make you do the whole thing again without keeping any rolls so be careful to roll exactly as I said above. For now you all need to come up with who is going to do the task. Rain isn't able to post a whole lot over the weekend due to some family responsibilities so it's probably best if someone else does it in any event. Looking your characters over the best bet overall would probably be Seijiro but that's up to you guys.

A couple of things to remember Typical climb is quarter speed or 5' per round for a character with normal speed. Accelerated climbing can be done by increasing the DC by 5 to move half speed.

DM EYES ONLY PLEASE!:

Imm, assuming I'm the one that has to make the rolls, how many initial climb checks do you need? One for each 5' or 10'? because you have them divided into 45 and 15 foot sections and I'm a little unclear how many rolls you need at each difficulty. thanks, also , I know you said no taking 10, but can I consider that I would autopass some of the checks and just put that down, or would I still need to roll?

You still need to roll even with the autopass because I want to see any instances of low rolls where I can throw abuse at you from Tsadok ;-) and how many checks depends upon how long it takes to make the distances. If you climb dc 10 for the first 45 feet and don't do the accelerated climb, then you would take 9 checks to get up there (5' per check) if you accelerated climb you would only need 3 successful checks (15' per check) You see what I mean?

Sorry, I didn't want to ruin your dramatic exit ;)

Horatio watches Dhaavan stride forth down the gangplank, his dark cloak billowing out behind him as the riff-raff in the streets backs down in front of this Dark Lord of The Rock.

Tightening his gun, and having already played the role of Dhaavan's "Bodyguard" he moves forward after the lad with a brisk step and mutters softly to Dhaavan -

In Infernal:

"Thou! Wouldst thy speaketh a tongue that - assuredly - our enemy would know? Though it is a devlish gamble, I deem that to one spawned of Human and Orc that to him the Elven tongue is as foul in his mouth as ash and cinder; thus I spoke the tongue of the Eldar; a language I deemed should be beyond his comprehension, though - in truth - I may be in error, curse him!"

Horatio continues to talk by Dhaavan, doing what he can to make sure his voice is low, despite the language he is using.

More Infernal:

"I tell thee truly; I do not know this wretch, yet my Secret Heart warns of speaking the tongues of the Creatures of the Sea in front of one who has spent long years before the mast may share more than we would desire. Thus do I now bend my voice and speak to thee in a tongue that I gamble to be beyond his wit and reckoning."

"Hearken, then! We were offered the chance to come and test our mettle before this Captain of Corsairs. Yet I say to thee; the Half-Orc knew nothing of this invitation and, rather, does not yet know why we are here... Thus I say; be thou cautious and alert for any treachery."

"Further, I warn thee, then, Lord of the Rock - we have already had assassins lay traps for us in the past. What better a place to do their foul knife-work then in this... this veritable hive of scum and villainy..."

He glances around as they come to the gang-plank of the other ship, and offers one more comment to Dhaavan before boarding...

Last bit in Infernal:

"Last; I remind thee that we turned over a large sum of wealth which was unmarked and uncounted by the rouge who leads us now. What then; should his heart be so honest that he shall relinquish even the smallest brass button to his master as delivered?"

"Perhaps; yet it grieves me that we gave such wealth to naught but a lackey rather than the one who it was due for he may not be as honest as others when he passes the full sum to his liege."

"Yet we shall see... Still, then; I ask only that thy would keep thy eyes open and be ready for anything."

He nods at Dhaavan with a casual look to belie the warnings he offered, then follows Dhaavan aboard the other ship.

Horatio glances around, his eyes intent on the mates on the new ship they are coming to; paying especial attention to the size of the crew, the weapons of the mates, and the arms and armaments of the ship itself.

There's no way the other guy can beat those rolls lol.

As Seijiro and Haines scurry up the masts and begin working the rigging, it is clear that Seijiro is the more swift and after a couple of stumbles right at the beginning, where Tsadok makes some disparaging remarks about Seijiro's mother, quickly takes the lead. As Seijiro is making the walk across the yard arm, Horatio shouts out at a bald man near the line to the forestay boom, before he has a chance to do anything though the man yanks the knot releasing the boom which causes the yard that Seijiro is on to sway wildly. He manages to keep his feet easily though, his preternatural grace keeping him glued to the yard. Before long he makes his way to the ground, a triumphant smile on his face. Several more members of the crowd cheer than boo from before. It seems your performance swayed a few in your favor.

Lol, no after all those sucessful rolls I don't think Jiro is up to the task. Nice job Jiro!

Sorry Horatio, I see your post but apparently we are all good on this post so nothing to ret-con or worry about.

Variel gives jiro the nod knowing that once up in the rigging Jiro was a natural and could practically jump from rope to rope. In a short time Jiro proved him right as he was done with the challenge before his opponent was. Even with the intrusion of the bald man cheating was not enough to sway Jiro from completing the task. Excellent job there Jiro. First round is on me after this for the crew and officers of the Dread Lady in honor of Jiro!

Playing to the crowd Variel continues on The first task is completed by our QuarterMaster Jiro. Even with interference it seems that the Dread Lady's officers are up to the task at hand.

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

Tsadok looks and says with a sneer Seems they have a crew member who's mother was a monkey then. Well done scurrying up and down the line. The next challenge is to see what sort of luck and talent ye possess. Select one o'yer crew and we'll play a few rounds of cards to see what sort of luck ye have. We'll make it interesting and play Bastard's Fool with a fun little Port Peril rule. The winner of each hand has to drink a shot of Gutburn. We'll both start with a stake of...say 100 platinum pieces. I assume you can cobble together that much?

He moves up to the poop deck where a table is set up and says Everyone off the poop deck except for me, your gambler and the dealer so that things stay fair.

To simulate an actual game of Bastard’s Fool, each player rolls dice, trying to get a score as close to 20 as possible without going over. At the beginning of the hand, each player pays an ante of 1 pp and secretly rolls a d20, representing her starting hand. A round of betting ensues (minimum bet is 1 pp; maximum bet is a player’s entire stake, called “all in”). To represent the discard and draw, each player may then secretly roll another die of her choice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, or d20) to improve her score (the larger the die, the more cards drawn). This is followed by another round of betting. A player can fold at any time instead of betting—in this case, the opposing player wins the hand. If the total of both dice is 20 or less, that is the gambler’s score.
If the total is over 20, the gambler’s score is only the highest number
on a single die (representing a poor draw). The highest score wins the hand. On a tie, no one wins. The pot remains on the table, and a new hand begins, with bets added to the existing pot.

Participants may improve their position using expertise, insight, misdirection, or even legerdemain. A gambler can make one of the following checks each hand (all DC 15): Bluff, Profession (gambler), or Sense Motive. A successful check adds +1 to the gambler’s score, with an additional +1 for every 5 points over the DC (even if this pushes the gambler’s final score over 20). A failed check reduces the gambler’s
score by 1, with an additional –1 for every 5 points under the DC. The gambling PC can also make a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check to cheat and increase her score by 4 points, but failing this check means Tsadok notices the attempt. The first failure costs the PC her stake for that hand. If the PC is caught cheating a second time, the game ends and the PC fails the entire test. Each time the PC wins a hand, she must a drink a shot of rum. Each drink after the first requires a DC 10 Fortitude save (the DC increases by +1 for each additional drink). The PC takes a –1 penalty on all skill checks for each failed saving throw. Once the PC has consumed a number of drinks equal to 1 plus double her Constitution
modifier, she is sickened (taking an additional –2 penalty on skill checks) for 1 hour for each drink beyond this maximum.

So as soon as you decide who is going to play let me know. Probably best bet is Dhaavan since Horatio is going to be out of action for the most part.

Variel arranges for the desired coins to be brought forward. As that is happening Variel looks to the officers. Whispering conspiratorially I think Dhaavan has the best shot at this. However a little gamesmanship might be neded as well. Dhaavan lost he first 20 rounds by folding on the ante. Once he has drunk himself. After that then start placing larger bets to win the post and reduce the number of drinks you yourself are taking.

Draws:

bluff: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (10) + 21 = 31 +3
card: 1d20 ⇒ 19
total: 22

Imm,
I'm not sure exactly how the Bust mechanic works when it's my bluff check that pushes me over 20 cause i rolled high on both die.

Or should I roll bluff after all is said and done at the end? And can i just flub the roll and take a 1 if i want?

maybe you just didn't need to bluff... wouldn't you decide whether or not to bluff after you see your cards?

Seijiro collects Tomo from Rain after his 'landing' and watches the rest of the proceedings curiously, grinning as he sees Dhaavan take on the role of card-player, as he seemed most suited to it.

Rounds go like this: Roll for card, bet, gamesmanship, roll to draw another card if you like, bet, show hand. You can fold at anytime.

Round 1

Tsadok smirks as he draws his cards.

DM EYES ONLY!:
1d20 ⇒ 6

2 Platinum more.

Dhaavan: 99
Tsadok: 97
Pot: 4

Your turn to draw a card or stand, bet or fold.

i'll do the rolls I threw this time as they landed, but I'll do it right for the rest of the game.

hmmm, I'll toss in 4, bringing it to 5 platinum each? Eh, make it 9 more. and he throws 9 play in.

Dhaavan: 90
Tsadok: 97
Pot: 13

When it comes time to draw, Dhaavan simply shrugs. I'm good. Pour me a drink and we'll start playing for real?

Sounds good.

Tsadok folds and says Pot and drink to you.

Dhaavan 103
Tsadok 97

Round 2

DM EYES ONLY:

Now we're starting to understand each other. How about another 10 before we draw?

If I draw and get higher than 21, do I just use my single highest die roll, or can I also add my gamecheck from bluff?

Tsadok looks at you and says Sounds good to me. Call.

Maybe you're right about doing the rolls all at once and betting once at the end of each round then seeing who wins.

He pushes his money into the pot and sits back with as smile.

You both put your cards down and realize you both have 20 exactly. You split the pot.

Tsadok laughs and begins the next hand.

Tsadok draws another card and then glares at the dealer like he did something wrong. He then turns back and lays his cards down after you do and says Well done. Well done. Like I said maybe you should be Captain of your crew instead. In any event, since this was all for show. He begins to start collecting his 100 platinum pieces.

Unless you object, he's going to continue grabbing his coins. Once done we'll move on.

--------------------------------------------

Tsadok stands up and says Well done, ye scurvy flea-bitten curs. Let's see how ye do now in a bit o'what pirates are really meant to do. It's time to see how ye do in a fight. Let's head back to yer ship and see what yer made of.

He heads back to the Dread Lady, the crowd staying a bit away from the ship to give room. Tsadok steps onto a crate to be seen above the audience. The final task is a test of the Dread Lady officers mettle. All those who are not officers, get off the bloody ship! Just so ye know, this one, like the real world, be to the death! The crowd starts cheering at this, excited to see some bloodshed.

Once your crew leaves the ship, they won't start the last trial until they do and if you refuse you will automatically fail, you see a very large wagon carrying something covered in a huge tarp. The crowd starts cheering something very odd at that point. They start screaming FISHPORK! FISHPORK! FISHPORK!

------------------------------------------

Let me know what you all want to do to set up. You won't be allowed to cast spells before the battle starts but once it starts anything goes for the most part as long as it's the PC's vs Fishpork. If you want Ana to stay on board she can along with Brightscale so long as you say she's an officer. Flynn, you can keep Amen if you wish but be warned this fight can be pretty lethal. Rain, same goes for Neko. She can stay on board if you wish.

Horatio’s eyes widen in surprise as the Half-Orc begins to collect the coin he had “gambled” against Dhaavan and lost. He turns to the others for a moment, then he looks back at Tsadock and his eyes are flat.

Moving forward to flank Dhaavan, he speaks in a loud voice – at least loud enough for those around to hear it:

”Oye! That’s not going to happen,” Horatio says with a tilt of his head to Dhaavan as he watches the Half-Orc reach to scrape the coin across, his words and accent mirroring the "rougher" version of the sailing folk and intentionally using local slang instead of his usual manner of speaking.

Then he speaks a little louder, looking around at the other sailor folk.

”A gamble’s a gamble and when you step up to the game – be it cards or Life – ye accept yer fate with courage, no matter how the cards fall.”

”The First Mate won the game, by all the gods, so that means he won the bloody coin,” he says with the same loud voice, then turns back to stare hard at Dhaavan’s challenger and waits to see what he does next.

I don’t think this will end well for me, but that's how Horatio would act.

Diplomacy OR Intimidate Check (GM: I’m not sure how you want to read that speech, but either way – the Modifier is the same).
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Tsadok grumbles a bit before saying Alright, if yer so in need of coin go ahead and take it. He looks to the crowd and says Don't want them to go hungry on my account. The crowd jeers a bit before you all head over but you get to keep the extra hundred platinum.

Horatio steps back a bit and stares hard at this Tsadok fellow and then turns to Dhaavan and gives him a grim nod.

He doesn't follow Tsadok until after Dhaavan takes his coin, his eyes continuing to watch the Half-Orc's back as he shambles away.

Heh, thankee kindly sir, but you know what our job takes and who knows when I'd find someone ta do it better'n me. Dhaavan says, commiserating with Tsadok about being a power behind the throne, since Dhaavan knows Tsadok isn't a gopher or second fiddle but the guy that makes it all happen, Kerdak's COO.
Then glances down as the Half-orc starts taking his money, and watches until Horatio speaks up. Observing as Tsadok responds.

then as the Half-orc gets up, Dhaavan chuckles, Master Goldtooth, it's not about the money, just the game. I mean, it's not like neither of us are hurtin' that much for the coin that it's actually a big deal, but it's no fun if there's no risk at all right? But a fistful of Platinum isn't worth it if the price is your animosity.

Secret Message(bluff): 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 20 = 26
Dhaavan is taking a position of power, saying, with his implication, that he's not concerned with a mere 1000 gold, pft! but that the gamble is part of the game. He's given Tsadok licence to take the coin, but taking the money means he's either (A) being petty and cheap, accepting charity from someone that beat him, or (B) accepting and acknowledging a friendship with his fellow First Mate.

Or he can leave the cash, but comes across as bitter if he grumbles about it. either way Dhaavan secretly signals that he's ovvering a handshake for a good game, both playing cards and after };)

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (11) + 20 = 31 with his new bro!

Fish-Pork? what a name. Dhaavan asks, and he strolls to the back, behind the officers. He does grab his newly enhanced shield-cloak.

Lets keep Anasrianna on board, Dhaavan acknowledges her as one of them, considering how important they are to each other's continued survival

Flynn and aman set both would have their nat armor amulets. Dhaavan is able to make them at double-speed on a take-ten for AoNAs

Rain extended her praise to Jiro and Dhaavan upon their successful trials.

When Tsadok announced the final trial was to be to the death, she wondered what opponent they would have to face to satisfy the appetite and will of the Hurricane King.

Discreetly, through their link, Rain sent message to Neko, //I would have you stay and fight alongside me in this trial. If things go very bad, then teleport out and save yourself.//

The golden cat sent back her assent and Rain (Zul trident upon her back, cutlass and whip at her belt and (non extended - 8ft) magical pike now in hand), potions (3 CLW, 1 CMW, 1 Mage Armor) in the pouch at her belt. (She's already wearing her armour, Besmara's Tricorne and the +2 AoNa gifted to her by Dhaavan to replace the other one she had.)

Rain heard the chanting and wondered if she had recollected the name 'Fishpork' before.

Know Local re Fishpork: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Immortal, do you mean for us to re-position ourselves now before the trial commences? Or is the above instruction for when we move around during the trial?

Horatio watches Tsadok walk off, his eyes never leaving him, and speaks to Dhaavan in Infernal again, not sure if the Half-Orc can hear after leaving, but not wanting to broadcast his thoughts to strangers who may be lingering after the game:

In Infernal:

"I hear thee and read well thy intention to gain his alliance. Yet I tell thee this; this one had elected to test our mettle as corsairs that could prove their worth to his liege."

"Therefore I had hoped that by standing up to his attempt to cheat thee that he should at least be impressed by the fact that I, and through me, our company, is not afraid to stand up for what is ours and to take what we earned, no matter what the risk."

So at the least I figured - Hey; if we're going to be doing a test to prove ourselves as pirates I figured it's better to show we have courage even though we might knifed. Also, I figured he may have been impressed by that (not to mention everyone else who was watching the game and who'd spread rumors later, possibly) that we'll fight hard for what's ours.

As an aside, I figure as we're dealing with the Pirate King's Number 2 guy and he lost to us in gambling now Dhaavan can tell people during Infamy Rolls - "Yeah, we were dealing with the best, but that doesn't matter because nobody tries to steal from us without a fight!". Or something cheerful like that :)

He gives Dhaavan a small, tight-lipped grin.

In Infernal:

"Indeed, the machinations of Fate saw fit to give thee and others the chance to prove thyself, while I stood by to cool my heels. Perhaps it was mine own pride which roused me, yet I had hoped, at least, for my chance to at least aid thee in what way I could."

"Further, I would not see my friends be cheated nor taken advantage of, no matter how meager the leavings should be," he adds with a nod at the coin.

GM: Amen-set will stand by Horatio, if necessary. Via the challenge and positioning ourselves: are we meant to be fighting this thing on our own ship, or the dock itself? That will largely effect where I end up moving myself.

Horatio, the idea is that you will be "repelling boarders" but he never said you have to stay on your ship. You need to START on your ship but if you wish to move to the dock you can do so after the battle starts.
