Amen-set nods quickly and picks up her spear again, holding it tightly.

She frowns a bit in thought.

Then she slings her shield over her back and rests her spear against the gunnel and hoists her light crossbow instead.

"Do not fear, senet; the Great Father will watch over us and protect our lives."

"And he does not, well, what of it? After all, today is a good day to die," she adds with a grim voice, but turns to give you a quick grin to show that, as long as you stand together, she is not afraid of anything.

Rain appreciates Amen-set's support and conviction.

In low, quiet voice, she utters both to the girl and the golden cat, "I do not like surprises."

Amen-set turns to Rain and responds, her voice equally low.

”Whatever will occur shall occur, but we have done all we can do, senet; at this time our lives are in the hands of the Great Father.”

She glances aloft, continuing to speak, though it sounds like she is almost talking to herself and reassuring herself.

”As mortals, we can only do so much, than we must wait for the gods to reveal themselves to us.”

She frowns a little then stares across at the other ship and watches her companions searching it.

She considers your words a moment.

”I hear you senet, on your dislike of surprises. For myself, what I do not care for is waiting. My heart craves action…” she says with a sigh.

Sensing your thoughts on the matter, though, she quickly shakes off her boredom and resumes a more diligent watch.

Variel continues to keep his eyes sharp and his blade ready as he moves along with Jiro and Flynn. The creaking of the ship causes him to look into every shadow waiting from some assailant to jump out at them.

Since this is at a later time, has Sandara woken up yet?

Male Human Guns. 1 (Mysterious Stranger), Fighter 1 (Lore Warden), Bard 6 (Archaeologist) - Barbarian 1 (Urban) Mythic (Champion) (AC 20 / HP 82 / F +9, R + 10, W +7 / Ini + 3 / Perc. +16)

Variel; The approximate date/time that event occurred was roughly Rova the 7th, sometime late at night when the assassin hit.

The GM said that Sandara was hit by a sleeping poison from the Drow, but she was eventually revived by it with amended help via a Healing check. The same night of the attack Horatio also used healing spells on her, in addition to the Healing check, and she had full bed rest for a period of 8 hours.

Today is roughly the 8th of Rova, one day later, but it is also roughly 1:00 PM. So, as Sandy was hit by a sleeping poison, it is likely that she is probably awake from a full 8 hour sleep and healing checks and spells were done to her the night before.

I think the real difficulty is that Sandy was healed on June 27th in real life and today is July 7th. In other words, it has been less than 24 hours later in-game, but it has been a total of 10 days out of game. I looked back through the last several days to find this information. I hope it helps.

Sandara is definitely awake. She would have awoken a few hours after the fight with the assassin.

As you make your way down through the ship, you step into the hold and hear a guttural scream as four sahuagin jump out and attack.

Due to my delays you all can get initiative on them. Just give me the order you all would have been.

I believe Variel would have been in the back since I was letting the others search and not getting in their way. If Jiro and Flynn say otherwise I will defer to them as I was their to help them and let them make the decisions as to how to proceed. Also would it have been safe to assume that if we were descending that Variel would have cast light already so they can see the hold? If so...

Seeing the creatures jump out and attempt to surround the group, Variel moves to where he can give Jiro flank. Once their he imbues his cutlass again and attempts to strike down one of the sahuigan.

GM – I was actually waiting for the answers to several of my questions; including our 35 Perception check – before I stated where I was going from the main deck. My next move would have been to go into the captain's quarters hoping to find logbooks as opposed to looking around the hold of a fishing ship.

Also, how big is the hold? Are there stairs or a hatch with a ladder? If it is stairs, how wide are the stairs? Are we forced to move in single file, or can we move as a group? Where is the enemy in relative position to us? Where is the battle map?

Actually, don't worry about any of those questions. At this point I’m assuming you’ve decided to control our actions to move the process forward, so I suppose those questions/details don’t matter. That said, I hope that we have some liberty on what we do here.

Horatio glances around the wide hold, and sees that Variel turns hard and fast to attack an enemy with his blade.

The massive red mist splattering across the hold from where the blade connected is dulled only slightly by the crackling of ozone when the electrical charge rippled from the blade into the flesh of the scum near him.

He sees Seijiro turn and attack another one adroitly, stabbing it badly and turns to look at the other two fresh ones.

Recalling clearly that it was creatures like these who had attacked their ship and killed Reevah a few weeks ago, he wonders if this lot is of the same brood even as he turns to level his pistol on the best target.

After Variel’s attack, I’ll try my hand at the one Seijiro hit to aid him, as I'm pretty sure Variel slaughtered his enemy. If Seijiro killed his man, I'll just pick the next one.

All attack bonus’s in place; attack vs. Touch.

”Ware!” she calls out the others.

"Wait!" Amen-set calls out to you.

"If there are threats on the ship; surely those three can handle it, for the ship is small and there is not many spaces for an enemy to hide; and they are hearty folk besides!"

"So please, do not fling yourself across so hastily, other enemies may be in the water, and if so - they may try to attack our own vessel, even as you cross," she says rapidly.

It's possible; with the longboat destroyed and the ship sinking, Amen-set assumes that something akin to a Dire Crocodile (or it's western version, possibly sharks) may have smashed a hole in the ship, and when the men got onto the longboat to flee, the boat was attacked by the same thing. In which case, our own ship may be in danger now, too.

It could also be that she doesn't want you to risk yourself, too - but then, she is a little protective of you. Still, it wouldn't change her opinions of protecting your ship. Without it, everyone dies.

I think she's hoping we can use Perception (not just Rain's Perception check, but anyone else's) to scan the water for any threats, too. Just in case...

Off to work! See you all later this afternoon/evening.

Variel obliterates the first Sahuagin and Seijiro neatly runs the second one through before Horatio puts a bullet through the chest of the third, wounding him greatly but not killing him.

The sahuagin return attacks, screaming in guttural rage and attacking with tridents. The biggest one, wearing an ornate necklace of some sort, attacks Variel while the wounded one goes after Horatio who shot him.

Are you sure about that attack Immortal? I mean a complete and total miss. Shouldn't the gods intervene and crit me somehow...just joking of course.

Using the momentum from slashing the first Sahuagin Variel pivots tightly drawing his arm back just as the largest of the Sahuagin thrust his trident at his chest. This time Variel learned from his previous encounters and instead of trying to parry the blow, he let himself glide along finishing his spin. The trident missed him by only an inch but miss him it did. The thrust threw the Sahuagin off balance. That combined with the spin was all the force Variel needed to land the cutlass at the juncture of it's head and neck. The moment before the blade landed, Variel recalled and repeated his spell from before. The crackling blade decapitated the head from the body, the heat from the electrical current cauterizing both head and neck preventing the body from loosing any blood. The swiftness of the stroke left the Sahuagin standing for a couple of heartbeats before finally toppling over.

Seijiro grabs the barrel and rolls it out of the hold and calls for ropes from the Lady to drag it over to their own ship... Once he's got the ropes tied around it, he pushes it into the water, hoping it will float long enough pull it over so it can be pulled up by the men on the lady.

I'm assuming we swam over to the other ship...if we took a longboat, he'd just roll it into that for transport to the Lady.

Glancing at his companions and seeing that they are alright, he quickly looks over the barrel that Seijiro is hoisting up the hatch.

He moves to the body of the wounded Shanguin and grabs the necklace quickly Move action to get there, move action to put the necklace in his pouch.

Be it magical or mundane; he suspects it may have clues about these filth.

As a Free Action he turns to Variel –

”Nice work! Is it worth taking the body to our priest for questioning?” he asks.

Knowing that Variel is hardier than him and can take the body of what seems to be the chief back to their ship – if he wishes – he leaves the decision to Variel.

I’m assuming the “chief” is the one who had the necklace before I took it.

GM – I have technically 8 round to go; but I don’t know what to do with them.

My initial plan was to rush up to the captain’s quarters and try to search it. I’m hoping that the captain’s log/charts are there, and they may be worth something or be of some use, and I have suspicions that the Sahuagin’s wouldn’t have cared about logbooks or charts or stuff like that.

But we never found out the full details of the ship via our perception check, so if there was any survivors on the ship; or wounded sailors who needed help, Horatio would skip the captain’s quarters and instead try to rescue those people before the ship went down.

If neither is an option, he’ll forget about both decisions and instead help whoever needs it and go back to our own ship by grabbing a errant rope and swinging back across the water with excessive flair.

There's not much else on the ship of value. The hole appears to have been made intentionally to make the ship look to be in distress. You guess that they saw your ship after taking this one and made it look like it needed help in order to ambush you.

You find the ships logs but they don't appear to show much, other than a few favored fishing spots, beyond what you already have.

You manage to make it out of the ship in time to see it drop beneath the waves, on it's way to making another skeletal house for fish at the bottom of the sea.

Cool! That said, I'll carry the corpse of the chief with me; maybe Adular can get it to talk in the morning next day.

It occurs to me that if these are the same group that hit our ship before, we may be sailing over their "stomping ground". If so, I'd like to know more about them and their intentions as a whole.

I think that Sahanguin are basically "orcs of the water"; so it's likely this may just be a waste of time, but it's what I would try anyhow.

The necklace is two things, 1. is that it is a type of metal called Deep Platinum based upon the whorls of bluish color in the metal. 2. it has been made into an Amulet of Natural Armor +1.

Deep Platinum: This rare platinum alloy is characterized by blue-black whorls of an almost disturbing aspect, and is virtually unknown to those living above the surface of the sea. It is actually mined from platinum deposits in the deepest ocean trenches, where it is tainted by exposure to poisonous deep sea vents called “black smokers.” Only aboleths, krakens, or even stranger creatures of the ocean depths can recover this metal from these fathomless trenches. On land, deep platinum has the same value as normal platinum, but it is of inestimable value to undersea races such as the sahuagin, who often ascribe religious or magical qualities to the rare metal.

Rova 8th, 1:15 PM

Two days from Blood Cove

Horatio ponders the value of the metal specifically and quickly conveys the information to the rest of the crew.

He is more intrigued by the nuances of the platinum itself; specifically its connection to the creatures of the deep. His mind tacks back to Valeros and he considers the lad for a bit. Glancing up to Rain on the quarterdeck he calls out to her.

”Oye, pilot-major; you’re an elf of the deep sea… catch,” he says and tosses her the amulet deftly.

”The metal’s a fair color, close to turquoise; it goes with your eyes,” he adds with a grin.

Horatio runs his fingers through his damp locks and shakes his hair out; content to let himself dry out in the brisk sea air.

He looks at the barrel that Seijiro brought in and considers the fish inside and wonders what it tastes like then shrugs.

His eyes go flat as he runs his booted foot against the head of the Sahuagin and presses it to the side.

”Tomorrow we’re going to have a little chat, you and I,” he says with a tight voice.

”If you’re the little whore that pinched Reeva then I’ll drag you back from the dead just so I can kill you again,” he adds then takes a deep sigh to clear his disgust with the creature.

”Right, so – on to the Rock?” he asks as he watches the remains of the ship sink beneath the waves, then turns back to the others.

The experience with the fishing easel over, Variel busies himself with making sure everything else is ready to go as they continue on towards the Rock. The amulet was an interesting find and one that would be a boon to whomever was wearing it. It was something that Variel would like for himself with all of the attacks coming his way. In the meantime though Variel would not lay claim to it as the statue he kept on his person was more valuable to him. Let one of the others have it to spread the wealth around.

Variel then cleaned his blade and himself much as Jiro did and looked to see where he was needed to get the Lady under sail again.

Amen-set rolls her eyes a bit at your response.

”You are magi and speak of trinkets? Bah! You are already powerful, how much more power do you need to have?” she says with a snort, punching you lightly in the arm; the punch somewhat playful.

”You look too long at these baubles. Yes, they are fine and good and they have worth to some, aye… but think rather on this: we have the body of one of these kus umak who attacked the ship.”

”My hatey-a' feels that the folk who attacked this ship may be of the same tribe who attacked our own ship before I joined with you. He says they killed one of your crew and dragged them over the side.”

She looks to Horatio who is leaning against the rigging and calmly smoking.

”Perhaps he is right; perhaps he is wrong, only the Great Father knows. But if he is right, that means that we may be granted the chance for vengeance against those who have done evil. This is a fine and noble thing, and far more honorable than discussing mere treasure, yes?” she says warmly, pleased at his enthusiasm to find more about these creatures and kill them.

”But as for now, we sail. When daybreak comes, the priest may communicate with the corpse and we may have the chance for vengeance on our enemies.”

She sighs dreamily, and leans against your shoulder, clearly warmed by the chance of a good deed.

”Vengeance against our enemies; bi-la kaifa!”

GM: At this point, as having coin would be nice, I’ve decided to use some creativity as well as ingenuity to see if we can earn a little extra coin. Here is the method to my madness below. I’m hoping the idea at least has merit, but I suppose that’s up to you.

Yo! Adular - this is mainly for you :)

Though of course, I wouldn't keep the details private and anyone who wants to can participate.

Throwing the stub of the cheroot over the side of the deck, Horatio moves over to Adular.

The normally vocal half-elf has been strangely taciturn lately, no doubt lost in his own thoughts and opinions.

Irrespective of those private musings, Horatio has business to deal with, and decides that he’ll be blunt and address the priest without preamble.

Moving in front of him, Horatio squeezes some of the excess salt water from his hair, and rubs his sleeve over his forehead briefly.

”I don’t know if you noticed, but I took the body of one of the scum who attacked that fishing ship,” he says with a nod at the corpse on the deck.

”The one I brought over looked like he was someone of importance with their little group, and I want to know more about him.”

”Specifically, if he comes from the same… family, clan, tribe, “school” or whatever the hell a group of those whores is called… as the other group that attacked our ship before,” he adds.

”If he does, I want to know how big that tribe is; including who their master is and how many in their group.”

He frowns at the seeming futility of such pursuits, his eyes narrowing.

”Thing is, from what I recall, these little basterds typically make their stomping grounds pretty large; not just a few small caves, but sometimes villages and even whole cities. If that’s the case, I’d like to know where those cities are so we can avoid them better.”

He slides out a journal from his satchel and thumbs through the pages quickly.

”This,” he says indicating an entry ”Is the exact date, as well as the latitude and longitude of our position when we were last attacked.”

A point I remembered to mark on our charts when we lost Reeva a while back.

He glances up at the sky, noting the sun for the time, and pulls out a pen and writes quickly.

”I just made a notation of our position – as well as the date and time now,” he adds briefly.

Taking 10 on Profession: Sailor for a net total of 17 to locate our position.

Then he takes the logbook from the fishing ship out and lays it in front of Adular, as well as the charts. He takes out of his satchel a small set of metal prongs, and small metal bar with notches indicating precise measurements.

Easily done with the fishing ship’s logbook, as well the rudimentary charts that noted good places to fish.

”This is the position of the first attack,” he says, sliding the bar from the location of Blood Cove and making some brief calculations where the attack took place several weeks ago.

Again, easily noted as I did make a point of marking that in our own ship’s log, so that’s cool.

”This is the position of today’s attack,” he continues quickly, marking today’s attack on the chart.

”Depending on the size of their little city below, we can accurately start predicting where to sail if we want to avoid these attacks in the future. We’ll find out more if you question him, no doubt.”

”Also, we know the location of some modestly valuable fish; while I’m not too eager for that, it may be those fish congregate near their city, another point we may use to locate those little bases of operations they inhabit... this assumes that they weren’t long range scouts… but I’m betting even if they were their scouting was limited to traveling up to the sky looking for prey first, not miles from their home and then kicking upwards looking for ships. Not if the group was only four… that’s too small a company to be traveling so far from home, I’d think,” he adds thoughtfully.

Then he looks up and his eyes gleam maliciously.

”They’re a threat to us all; not to mention the fact that an enemy of our kind,” he adds with a sardonic twist of his lip, not mentioning pirate ”is likely an enemy to your goddess.”

”That said, I’m willing to bet there’s quite a few folk who may pay large coin to know where these bases are; be it a paladin of Besmara, or, if you prefer, a group of enterprising individuals who want to pillage a town and have the resources to pillage a town that’s under the water, not just near the water.”

”With a few more of those “bottles of air” we pinched, and some decent resources, we could fix ourselves a way to take the fight to them perhaps. Or, at the least, for those aboard who want to pillage a village… well, we can get the location of a place that might be very interesting to hit when we’re a little more powerful,” he says with relish.

Run-down
I need both positions of the times we were attacked by Sahuagin’s marked on the overhead map so we can avoid sailing around those areas in the future and hopefully avoid more attacks like that.
I want to know the general size and populace of the village/city those four we killed came from; and it’s general location on the map so we know where it is so we can also take that information and sell it to others (or just give it away, I’m open to either possibility) and, possibly, so we can try to plunder a Sahuagin’s town. Something that I guess won’t happen for a long time, but I like to be prepared.

Either way, I’m happy to take the battle to them, rather than having them attack us when and where they want without problems.

Well, GM – that’s my plan and ideas. I hope they have potential and at least get your creative juices stirring. I know this is a “boxed set” and that Sahuagin are likely nothing but “wandering monsters” so all these decisions are probably just extra work; but it’s what I’d do socially. If that’s worth anything, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Rain catches enough of Flynn's remark to take her hand off the wheel and catch the flying object.

She looks at the amulet, turning it over in her hand, intrigued by the blue-black whorls. Then with curious smile on her face, she looks across to Flynn.

"You are giving this to me? It is strangely pretty. What does it do? Or is it just a trinket?"

Rain looked to Amen-set who spoke of the trinket as a mighty gift. And bowed her head in acknowledgement. The girl's words to Dhaavan moments after baffled her somewhat but then again, Amen-set's playfulness toward the sorceror was obvious. Rain's gaze moved from Amen-set to Dhaavan and she silently pondered their interactions and where it would lead them.

Amen-set turns from Dhaavan to look at Rain.

”Ah, senet, pardon!” she adds, enjoying the wind on her face and the presence of the sun on her skin.

”The amulet grants the bearer powerful magical protection; not to mention the fact that the metal itself is made of platinum; but a kind that comes from the very depths of the ocean. The platinum alone is very rare indeed – but the magical powers of protection are even more impressive,” she says explaining quickly what Horatio had indicated earlier to her about it's magical defenses.

She looks at Rain for a moment, cocking her head, seeing Horatio in conversation with Adular.

”Oh senet, he would not have given it to you if he did not intend for you to have it, I think,” she says with a grin and a wink.

Then, turning from Dhaavan, she hops up to the lee of the quarterdeck and stares hard at Rain for a moment, especially around Rain’s eyes.

”Hmmm… it is so! The color the platinum is a deep and rich coral with heavy shades of turquoise – it matches your eyes very well,” she says almost thoughtfully.

Glancing toward Dhaavan, she shakes her head somewhat melodramatically and points toward the sorcerer.

”Did you see him try to rush into battle, though the rush may mean his death? He abandoned the ship when bloodshed started, risking his very life like a fool!” she says with disgust and loud enough for Dhaavan to hear her.

Clearly, despite her harsh words, she is genuinely proud of Dhaavan’s courage, and seems to both honor and respect bravery. Obviously Dhaavan’s rash move to hurry across the ship alone impressed her quite a bit, despite the fact that she is trying to act nonchalant about it.

She listens a bit to Horatio’s words and sees what he is saying when he speaks to Adular and the charts, her eyes widening at his idea.

”Ah! A fine plan, senet! Think; we two may yet stab into the depths of the deep waters and spill the blood of our enemies together, eh? That is a very good thing, we should be honored that the Great Father has blessed us with the chance to do good works,” she says with a guileless smile.

Yeah, clearly her opinions of “good” and “evil” differ a bit from “traditional” good and evil via alignment. To her, killing enemies is genuinely a good thing; she isn’t being sarcastic at all, and believes it is not only the right thing to do, but the honorable thing to do. But Rain could probably infer enough about Amen-set to know her moods and meanings already without making rolls on Sense Motive.

At this point she whistles a happy tune and turns to look at you with a smile.

Cool; late for work, but I’ll hopefully see more when I get back.

Due to the vagaries of scheduling, I’m back from work for a little while before I have to go out to work again. Yay.

Slight ret-con before notes with Adular are done via the discussion about the dead Sahuagin.

As Horatio cups his hand around the cheroot to light it, he observes Rain approach to thank him for the amulet.

”Think nothing of it, pilot-major,” he says with a smile around the butt of the short cigar as it ignites into flame with a minor spell.

”I reckoned you’ve been doing a lot of combat up close and personal and I don’t recall you carrying much in the way of magic gear to defend yourself.”

”I suppose the others will want to split the cost of the item, which is fair, seeing as we have a contract and all… but I thought it was about time you got first dibs on something magic-like,” he says, his words seeming a bit distracted for a moment as he seems to consider something.

He takes a long inhale from the smoke and turns to look at the sea for a moment, then after a bit he turns back to look at her.

”Besides, the way I see it, you’ve been under the knife a few times on account of those assassins. If you got the amulet, you can wear it even when you sleep and don’t need to worry much about bunking in some armor for extra protection. That way, if they try that trick again like they did last time… well, you know, now you’ll have something to give you an edge, maybe, whether you got armor on or no,” he says with a shrug.

He blows out a dual set of smoke from his nostrils and looks at Rain’s face a moment.

”Anyhow, it’s metal from the deep sea and its well made, so I thought it may be something you’d like on account of the metal and look of it, never mind the magic part. The deep platinum seems like the kind of thing that sea elves would fancy, I figure. Besides, seeing the turquoise blue in it, well… it does go well with your eyes,” he adds with a grin.

Horatio, you would know as a nautical man that having two points won't really help too much as far as pinpointing a location for a sahuagin base. You need a third in order to get a better triangulation on where they are. That said, you can certainly sail around the two areas where you were attacked although that will take you a ways out of your way as they were both on shipping lanes. Knowing what you do about aquatic races though, you know that they can range much greater distances than land based races tend to so the base could really be anywhere on the fever sea.

Rain, the next few days look to be relatively clear though very hot again. You will need to watch the crew for signs of heat stroke/exhaustion.

GM – Ah, that would be true if I was trying to triangulate their position.

My current hunch is that four low-level bruisers wouldn’t be traveling so far from their home base without gear and goods. All they had was some weapons and armor; no food, no gear, nothing but a magical necklace.

So I’m figuring that they swam up from their city to see what is above them; like scouts.

I’m also guessing that their city isn’t that far from this ship in general, maybe a few miles in radius and miles deep.

If the downed ship was literally the very center of their city, I’d gamble that their “territory” extends about six miles in every direction via a hexagon (I’m pulling that system of mapping from Kingmaker). That puts the “area” that their city is in roughly 12 miles end to end, maybe.

Now that’s all guessing on my part; I’m just assuming things, I know. I’m also assuming that the other part we got attacked at several days ago was guys swimming up from their city; again because they don’t have much gear or equipment on them when they come up. If they were traveling in long distances, I just figured they’d have more belongings; food, hunting supplies, that sort of thing – I don’t know.

Okay, that’s all my assumptions on this for now. I guess we’ll see what happens next.

FYI about heatwave: So the thing is, this is nearing mid September. Are such heat waves this common so late in the year, or is this unusual?

Horatio looks at the half-elf over the plume of tobacco smoke.

”What I need now is answers. My hunch is that these whores swam up from their base, and their base is somewhere in a five mile radius from this point. I mean, come on – they had no gear on them but weapons, right? No food, no bed-rolls, or whatever they use to sleep, gods know… point is, I’m guessing they’re scouts, and I want to know more.”

He looks at Adular at grins sardonically.

In Aquan:

”I know their gods damned lingo; count on it.”

”I want to talk to that scum, and find out more about him; where he comes from and what he’s doing here. I want to find where the closest base is and mark it on our charts.”

”Once we do that, we can not only sell the charts to those who will pay for them, but… well, to be fair, I’d rather make copies and send them all over the gods damn Inner Sea. I don’t want innocent fisherman getting knifed because they sailed too close to these scum,” he says, turning to spit on the corpse.

He scratches his chin a bit.

”There’s a lot of spells that’ll let you go into the deep; aye – but as for me, I don’t have much in the way of magic, or crafting magical gear; so I rely on science when magic fails me. I can go under for a long time with naught but science to aid me, and I’m happy to share that knowledge,” he says, his eyes glinting.

”But that’s all for later,” he adds a bit more easily.

”For now; let’s lay to and sail hard for this Rock place. Next dawn, we’ll crack open that whore’s head and find out what he really knows,” he says clapping Adular on the shoulder.

Okay, between Adular, Sandy and me, (and Rain, too, though I'm not sure if she can) that's about 22 gallons of water a day, I think. A normal person (who wants to maintain a healthy metabolism and uses a rowing machine for one hour non-stop each day; which is equitable to being on a ship, I'd think) drinks 1 gallon of water a day; average. That means between the four of us, we can take care of 22 crew members without too much difficulty and not even dip into our stores. Hopefully, that should be good. Can anyone else use the spell?
