Round 9

• Mantooth attacks the berserker at J27 and strikes it down!
• Tirion's black tentacles fail to grapple any of the free bugbears. Next, a burst of four magic missiles spring from Tirion's rod and strike two of the bugbears ( J24 and J29). They are unable to trip them, but they do damage them slightly.
• Bofus releases two acid arrows with his bow and hits both of his targets striking them dead!
• Thordak hits J24 with his axe, but it seems to only make the berserker madder!
• Red. While the bard maintains his inspiring song, he fires at S24 with two of his arrows, hitting the hobgoblin and killing it immediately.
• Poppy pelts the grappled hobgoblin at P28 and kills it.
• Brindol Guard. The guard attacks J27, but is unable to land a blow.
• Bugbear Berserkers are dropping, but the three that remain fight on mercilessly.
• The Hobgoblins remain motionless as they appear dead.

Bah, I actually did not perform an action last round. Can we retcon that I cast another Magic Missile with the Rod of Toppling? That was my intention. The MM last round was the completion of the MM cast the round before.

You could have started casting your round of MM on round 9. With the rod, doesn't it take a full round action anyway? You can simply roll the results on round 10.

I cannot call on them often, but they are designed to slow and hinder the enemy. In narrow confines such as here, as you saw, they can be quite effective in slowing a charge.

Tirion dismisses the black tentacles, and then casts Detect Magic to see whether the bugbears, the hobgoblins, or the manticores might possible have anything magical about them. He will leave the looting of non-magical items to Bofus.

I have used up about half of my magic for the day. I can still speed everyone up if necessary. Remember though, if you wish my hasting magic to be effective, everyone needs to be fairly close together when I cast it, which is dangerous with the dragon's breath weapon.

You know, Mister Red, under normal circumstances I'd agree with you. But I don't know that the average militia man with sturdy leather and a decent sword can stand up to an army of magically equipped monsters. I just worry for the rest of the Brindol folks, savvy?

I've got the staff, but i'd rather save the 2 charges for a bigger heal. I think we need to spend some cash on a larger healing wand...

With no other source of healing, may I kindly suggest you make your way to the cathedral to get some healing. I want the fight with the dragon to at least start with you at full strength.

Mabye we shoudl head to the cathedral for some healing. I'll bet that dragon is out there--and overconfident!!--and we should be at our best for his next visit.

Dungeon Master

After a lull of several minutes, you hear and see no further evidence of the Red Hand nearby. Deciding that it is safe to leave the Brindol guards at the barricade on their own, you proceed up the hill to the center of town through the war torn city to the Cathedral of 'Peace Through Vigilance'. Along the way, you pass a number of fallen goblins and hobgoblins, but you are unopposed on your quick trip.


"Mantooth!" A familiar face smiles as she runs up and embraces the paladin as he enters the cathedral. "Am I glad to see you! Are you alright? I've been so worried about you! I heard that the Red Dragon has been blasting people right and left with its awful scorching fire. I feared that maybe you were one of them.

"Kiana!" Mantooth declares as he embraces Kiana. "Yes, I've been fine. We have been throughout the city, battling the Red Hand, but we are doing as well as can be expected. Our dwarf, Thordak, has not fared so well against a couple of bugbear berserkers. My friend still has his beard, but if you there is some healing to be had, I am sure that he would very much appreciate it. We would love to stay and visit, but our duty compels us to return to the battle as soon as possible."


"Considering all that you do for Brindol, I am certain that we could provide you with some healing. I think I could find you whatever healing you are in need of. What will it be, my friends?"

Well, my wounds are but a scratch--pretty light. Sir Longbrow here has injuries that are a little more severe. I'd say both Mister Red and Thordak have fairly serious wounds.
