The guard looks with wonder upon all of you as the good news reaches his ear. "Is it true? The dragons have been destroyed?! May the light bless us! You are indeed the Heroes of Elsir Vale! Come in at once!" A moment later the gates to Brindol swing open and you enter into the city. "Lord Jarmaath will want to hear from you at once. May I offer to accompany you right there?"
Suddenly several Brindol guards appear with relieved and grateful expressions on their face. "Thank the Inheritor! You have killed the dragon! I never thought it could be done!" "Now that the dragon is killed, we need your help! These buildings are starting to burn and if we don't do something about it, it will likely spread to the rest of the city! Can you please do something about the flames?!" For the next five minutes you may extinguish as many fires as possible. To extinguish a fire I will require a DC20 Survival Check. one check for each minute. Let's see how much of a difference you can make. Additional spells may also help.
Bofus wrote: "Don't worry boys. Help is here. Magistrate Longbrow himself is in the cathedral and is getting ready to come out and fight. I'm sure you'll want to do him, and the town, proud when he does!" "By the light of Iomedae, where is he?! We will not survive battle unless there is somebody here to fight that horrible beast! I cannot stop myself from shaking!"
"Wow! You guys are pretty impressive! I don't care what Jarvis thought of you. That was an incredible display of force! What were those dark tentacles things anyway? I've never seen anything like that before! Those bugbear beasts didn't stand a chance. Wow, wait until I write home to my mom and tell her about this! She will never believe me."
Round 5 The guard at H26 sees the others firing and he climbs up onto the barricade and joins in the ranged attack. He takes aim at the wounded hobgoblin at S28. Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
"By Iomedae, do you see what's comin? What in the hells are they?" Meanwhile, his companion moves to G26, draws his longsword and prepares to fight anything that comes over the barricade.
"Oh damn it! This is not going to go well! I hear manticores are ruthless! I was telling Jarvis that if you get stabbed by their spikes that you cannot get them out. Well, unless you cut them out with a dagger. Jarvis, over there, has already decided that he doesn't want to fight them. I think the poor fella's too stressed out!"
"At last some help! Am I glad to see you! We've been ordered to stop any enemy from getting through. They want to keep the horde from reaching the marketplace to the north. We've done well firing arrows and taking down the few goblins who've tried to make it over our barricade, but not far away, we've got a horde of nasties pushing their way north. It won't be long before this place will be overrun with hobgoblins! I think they are even bringing some manticores with them!"
@Bofus Several moments later, a Brindol guard comes to Kaal manor and looks around trying a little lost. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 If Bofus makes himself known:
The guard declares, "Master Beechnut, there is to be a duel between Jared Kaal and the Bard, Rebel Red. Your presence is requested to witness this event. Follow me at once." If Bofus does not make himself known: The Brindol guard looks around to see if he is noticed at all. When he thinks the area is clear, he goes up to the front gates of Kaal Manor and begins speaking in quiet undertones to the House Kaal elite guards.
Lars Ulverth wrote: "If I find that anyone of you have broken the trust bestowed upon you by the Lord and the Cit of Brindol, then I will personally advocate to Magistrate Longbrow that you be put to death in the name of justice! Am I perfectly clear in this matter?" The guards look upon the Captain with sour expressions on their face, but they nod their heads in agreement. The quietest of the three guards speaks out. "I gave my allegiance to Brindol and I will not go back on that word now. You can trust me in this matter, Captain Ulverth."
Meanwhile, as Ulverth holds up the two guards in the hallway to the south, the guard, who was under the effects of Tirion's charm spell, takes the keys from one of the guards and happily unlocks the door. "I think this will unlock the door." As the doors are swung open, the sight you are all greeted by is Jared Kaal and a beautiful female on the floor of his office, both caught in the act and with very little clothing being worn!
Tirion wrote: " You are welcome to question us, but with the Horde of the Red Hand but a short distance from the walls, we do not have the time to discuss this now, so, as I said, you will spend a pleasant night in a cold cell until the Magistrate has time to determine how to deal with your insubordination. " The guards size up all of you and their confidence begins to wane. "If you want in so badly, I will leave you to it!" The guard steps aside. Poppy wrote: "Insubordination? Surely our friend jests. The obstruction is no less than treason! This guard is lucky he is not in Galt, or by now he'd have been hung, or even worse he'd have been handed to the Gray Gardners and a future date with the magical Final Blades, the most feared tools of justice in all the lands!" "Hey, we don't want no trouble. We'll just give you a little space!" The guards begin quickly walking back down the hallway.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Mantooth Longbrow wrote: "Indeed, I am Sir Mantooth Longbrow. By the powers vested in me from Lord Kerden Jarmaath, I am the new magistrate of Brindol and I have come to relieve Jared Kaal from duty. In fact we are here to arrest him for treason against the crown! You would do well to step aside and let us pass!" One of the guards replies firmly. "Magistrate Kaal is not here, so I suggest you leave immediately. I'm sure you will find him back at the Kaal residence!" Sense Motive DC 18:
You are certain that the guard is lying or at the very least does not want anyone to enter Jared's office.
Tirion wrote: "Where would he have gone? Please don't tell me that the former magistrate installed back doors into, and out of, the city prison?" "I do not know where he went. Perhaps he is checking on the prisoners or is in the barracks with the other guards. I've been on duty in the front room, so I have not been checking up on his whereabouts."
Bofus wrote: "...why do you need anything but the keys, right here on his belt? You must have just missed them on your first pass, my good man." "What the?!!!! . . . " The guard declares, annoyed that he had them all the time but could not find them. "I knew they were there!"The guard lies defensively. Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 The guard leads the company onward, but he missed the fact that Bofus is the one who is actually leading them up ahead. He reaches the door on the right where he knocks once followed by a knock three times. After a moment of silence, the guard replies, "I suppose he must be gone already. I do not hear him at all. What do I do now?"
Tirion wrote: "Wise choice. Now, could you be so kind as to lead us to the former Magistrate's chambers." "Uhmm, yes. Right away, Gentlemen." The friendly Brindol Guard leads the others through the unlocked door and then north along the hallway. In a moment he reaches a barred gate. The guard reaches for his keys, but unaware that Bofus has taken them, the guard is unable to find them. "Uhh, I had my keys a moment ago. Duhh, I'm not sure what happened to them." The guard turns red with embarrassment and begins to frantically search his pockets. "Uhmm. I can't find my keys. I can't let you go any further until I find them."
The friendlier of the two guards replies,"I do not see why not. This seems like a reasonable request." The other guard replies, "I'll tell you why not! The magistrate ordered that he not be disturbed. I'm following his orders, and I will not be punished for that, but I'll tell you what. I will send word that you broke into his prison and demanded to speak with him. If he wants to speak with you, I'm sure he will let you in. Otherwise, I think you are tough out of luck!" The guard reaches for his keys and begins to open the lock to the next door.
"What the hell do you mean by a mole? We are loyal to the magistrate and would never break his trust! What type of information are you talking about here?! You may have said too much, but it's out now. So spit the rest out! What information has been leaked?! Tell us who it is and we'll smash his teeth in!" The friendlier guard chimes in. "Are you sure you don't mean a vole instead of a mole? This I would believe because I've seen a great deal of rodents in the prison cells. I'm sure the prisoners have complained about it."
Will Save: 1d20 ⇒ 2 Tirion wrote: "My friend, good to see you again. Lord Jarmaath wishes to speak with the magistrate. Is he available?" "It is nice to see you, but do I know you? You certainly don't look like Lord Jarmaath. The magistrate told us that he does not want to be distrubed. Can you come back at another time, my little gnome friend?"

"My mistake, Bofus Beechnut! I did not realize that you were still with us to defend Brindol. Most of the citizens have fled and it is only the guard and the military left to defend this place. Forgive me for not recognizing you. You are most welcome here, and indeed, the Lord Jarmaath will be pleased to welcome you. The leaders of the all the towns are gathering at Brindol Keep and I am sure that your presence will be appreciated. Please announce yourself to the guard at the keep and I am certain they will permit you to enter. Welcome back, Heroes of Elsir Vale!" |
