I'll take the extra hit point rather than the extra skill.
for a combat character, I always find that an excellent choice!
Is there any real benefit to adding a rank to a skill I already have a rank in?
It depends on the skill, really. As we progress in level, the DCs of certain things will increase, making higher ranks in the skills more important. As a skill-based class, there are certain thigns I'm expected to do (disable device, perception (find traps), stealth) which will get a skill point every level. I might suggest that, if you're eventually going to get the Bonded Mount, you might want to put a few ranks in Ride. Perception never hurts either. But you're not really a skill-based class, so honestly it's not a huge issue (I've played a paladin before, I never used skills all that much).
Diplomacy, though, that can come in very handy, particularly with your beefy Cha bonus . . . you might wnat to keep that maxed.
but that's just *my* humble suggestion. :-) Your mileage may vary.

I agree. We had some ready-made cohesion, and we've become pretty friendly, it seems to me. I'm very interested in seeing this whole Blackscarzi thing and Baron Trask thing through; since Mantooth is now a Brindo knight I can see his desire to see it through; I'm hoping we can find enough common ground to really gel. :-)
I feel like we're (meaning the party, the DM is great) aaaaaaalmost there--but then, I don't have any PBP experience before this, so I may be talking out of my bunghole!! :-)

Hello, sorry i haven't been around much just finished school I plan on being much more active in my posting now!
That's awesome! I hope your exams went well!

Hey! I have a small comment to make:
We are over 1k posts but still only on the 2nd day, this is a problem for spellcasting characters since they have too few opportunities to regain their spells. While that isn't a big problem for Florence (or bards in general) I think it could be one for Cebre and maybe Mathias. Perhaps you could place the events of the plot into a larger timeframe? Just my two cents :)

Is 1000 posts a lot? We've only covered two days in game, so is 1000 posts typical for that sort of time frame? I think the campaign is going very well, either way. I'm finished exams and back at home so I'm free to post more often.
Am I doing alright as a paladin? Should I be acting differently or praying more? I figure if I pray more than the party cleric I'll be ok.

Paladin, in my experience, is a vastly misunderstood class. A very wise man (the guy who taught me D&D--DMHW, I'm referring to Russ) once told me "A paladin is nothing more than a fighter with a cause." In simplest terms, that's true. Just pick your cause (Justice, Law & Order, a king/ruler, a god/dess, etc) and be true to it unto death. Honor that cause in the strictest sense you can--both the letter AND the spirit (that's why you're LG, in my opinion--letter and spirit).
I've played with numerous paladins (adn played a couple myself) and the quick prayer/comments are typically common; the more formal "I kneel and pray for such and such" aren't quite as common--but again, your mileage may vary.
the question really is--how do YOU think you're doing as a paladin? :-)

Hey folks, one of my Australian friends just gave me this list of D&D type movies to check out. I just saw Dorkness Rising over the weekend and I laughed out loud through the whole thing. Here is the list he gave me:
Comedy:
Gamers
Gamers:Dorkness Rising
Gamerz
Genre Comedy:
Krod Mandoon (series)
The last Lovecraft Relic of Cthulhu
Documentary:
Monster Camp
Darkon
The Dungeon Masters
Uber Goober
I'm going to check these out. Have you guys seen any of these?

I was fortunate enough to see the opening viewing of Gamers: Dorkness Rising at GenCon 2009 with the Dead Gentlemen in attendence (they made the film) and it was an incredible experience!! DAMNED funny movie. DMHW, every time the main character's girlfriend did something, I'd yell out "I LOVE her!!!"

There is only a little bit of water in my basement, but other than that I am fine. A lot better than the town. I was looking at pictures of where you are, DMHW, and it looks a little worse for the wear.
I am going to be in IL from now until Tuesday, so I'll post when I can!

I had an exciting day of taking down dead trees in our backyard. (they were threatening our neighbor's house/power lines as well as our own). Both times, the falling tree got hung up on other trees, and took hours + our neighbor's winch to finally get down. Exciting day! One of them we ended up breaking in three pieces--it was like something out of Mythbusters!!

DM Harpwizard |

A few years ago, I had a CR20 Colossal Norwegian Spruce fall over. It was easily 100 feet tall and would have crushed my house or my neighbors. By the grace of Desna, it missed both houses and fell on a tree that only just the week before, had been braced with cables. Remarkably, the tree held and our castles were saved. However, we then hired a 20th level lumberjack to come in his is +4 Vorpal Chainsaw and take it down. He used a giant crane the size of a siege tower and split it up into four large trunks. We saved a slice of the trunk which we still keep out on our porch to this day. Yours sounds like quite the adventure as well! :-)

![]() |

Well, lumberjack is a noble, but busy, profession. You sleep all night and you work all day. You chop down trees, eat yer lunch, go to the lava-treeeeee. On Wednesdays you go shoppin' and have buttered scones for teeeeeea!!

Sorry 'bout the confusion, I took a while to post, (looking up rules and such) but I didn't know you had posted, Bofus... Should we kill the guards or just tie them up? Let me know, and I can change my post.

![]() |

Well, we didn't discuss that ahead of time, and our charaters aren't in a position to discuss it NOW. However, I'm sure you saw the spurt of blood as a dagger plunged into the side of the guard's head when he poked it into the carriage . . .

Question for DMHW (and everyone, really):
do you think it would be helpful, or not, to post the bad guys' AC when you set up the Initiative order? That way, we can type out our attack routine, hit "preview post" and see if we hit, then roll damage or not, depending on if we hit. (and we can write up some of our own descriptive text for the hit or miss, if you'll allow that too)
On the other hand, "giving away" the AC can change things and lend itself to metagaming, so I can see it going either way. (I'll post this same question in the HOD OOC thread)

DM Harpwizard |

As a DM, I would like to keep AC secret if you don't mind. However, feel free to write a descriptive text describing what you do. I will just describe the results.
Thanks for your patience, everyone. I would like to give Matthias, Mantooth and Cebrë a little more time to post, but soon I will DM them myself for this encounter.

![]() |

Prestidigidation, of course.
but seriously . . . I should look into picking that up myself. If for no othe rreason than I want to give Paizo my money.

DM Harpwizard |

Well folks, I am off to MC and play at our 16th annual Spring Frolic. I will be leaving shortly for an evening of harp playing and Scottish dancing. I probably won't be able to post until tomorrow night. Please feel free to work out your plan of attack and let me know how you are going to deal with this vicious Owlbear!

DM Harpwizard |

Note to all about Critical Hits in my Campaign.
If you roll a twenty, I will allow a second roll to confirm a critical. In Thordak's case, he rolled a 20 for the critical confirmation, and he definitely scored a critical hit. However, I then allow another dice roll for a confirmed extra critical. He rolled a 3 resulting in a 9 for a miss. Thus he scores just his typical x3 critical hit. If he scored an extra critical (by succeeding on his second confirmation roll), I would not instantly kill the foe, but simply apply his damage yet again for another 3d10 worth of damage. If you kept rolling 20s on your critical hits and confirmations, I would allowing adding more and more damage.

![]() |

That's EXACTLY how I suggested we apply multiple natural 20's on hit rolls to my "live action" DM but he thought it was too complicated!! DMHW, you're a smart man. :-)
so just to be clear . . . correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.
Bofus, wielding a rapier (18-20 X2) makes the following die rolls on a sneak attack:
20
20
19 (which, with additions, is a hit)
This would result in 4d4+1d6 damage (regular damage is d4, crit woudl be 2d4, 2 consecutive natural 20's plus a "regular" confirmation = 2 additional multipliers, plus 1d6 sneak attack damage)
Or can you only get a single multiplier increase?
