Zandomir moves into the room to get closer to the cultists. He's uncertain where the one went and isn't confident he can hit the one that appears to have multiplied, so he focuses on the same one as Lizzie and Momijii.

"Whatever evil you're trying to conjure, your efforts end here. You will harm the people of this town no more."

The warpriest lets an arrow fly at Melisenn (red).

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

Zandomir's arrow flies true and it pierces Melisenn's left shoulder and passes clean through! Gritting her teeth, she grunts in pain.

Meanwhile Heinrich vanishes and stalks forwards, Red Destiny in hand.

Lizzie mounted on her canine steed surges forwards and the pair savage the cultist!

Reeling from the punishment Melisenn, staggers back screeching, "Lord Hastur! Hear thine servant on her hour of need! Give me wings oh Lord!"
Concentration DC 21: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 <--- PASS
And with that she soars twenty to thirty feet up!

Oddly enough I don't think you take AOOs for vertical movement RAW, but this is clearly ridiculous so I'm going to let Lizze + Dog have a go. Momijii unfortunately goes after Melisenn, so her kick is negated. @Momijii feel free to redirect the attack.

As it is movement greater than 5 feet the type doesn't really matter in this case. If this was earthglide I'd argue differently but it's not.

RAW the thing that matters is whether or not you're leaving a threatened square or not. If you fly straight up you don't.
As Melisenn soars up, Lizzie manages to smack her with her mace. The dog only manages to bite air however.

Momijii denied her initial target swerves to land a solid kick into the side of Dalene.
Or did she? Hit on a 8: 1d8 ⇒ 8 <--- YES

The sorceress grunts in surprise and pain when by blind luck, Momijii managed to guess correctly and attack the real Dalene not an image.

Zarine manages to spring the last padlock and loosen the chains holding the the remaining living victims against the stone that was slowly, inexorably, devouring their souls. Too weak to defend themselves, they slump away from the stone. Again Zarine can't determine if they are safe, but at least there are no more tendrils of reddish vapor boiling off them and getting sucked into the stone!

Dalene ducks a quick jab from Momijii's foot and snarls to her, "Fell powers beyond your ken at play down here! Why not go upstairs where it's safe?" To Momijii this sounds like sage advise from one of her very best friends.

Momijii felt the magic wash over and sink into her mind and knew the only thing preventing her compliance was the spell that protected her from evil. Cloaked by his art, Heinrich studies Dalene, watching carefully to see which images was the real sorceress. After Lizzie and Momijii had whittled down the images he found it easy enough to keep track. Suddenly he was in position and the moment felt right, he surged towards her and slipped Red Destiny in between the fourth and fifth rib into her heart. Dalene gasped at the sudden cold and pain that blossomed in her chest, before arching back and screaming, "ASA!" Before she hit the flor, eyes rolled back into her skull giving her face a hideous countenance as she died.

Zarine having done what she could for the prisoners followed the sounds of combat and took a pot shot at Melisenn but her aim was rushed and she missed.

Drawing the aether surrounding him in and around the sling bullet he has in hand, a loud roaring sound that is anything but silent surrounds the gnome as he steps out from the small area along the wall he was standing in. In an underhanded motion, almost as is skipping a rock or playing at pins in the yard, he flings the bullet at the floating mage.

if that hits

The warpriest nods grimly to himself as the battle seems to be turning in their favor. He hopes they managed to intervene before the cultists were able to waken or resurrect some unspeakable monstrosity.

Zandomir takes a step closer to the flying woman before releasing a pair of arrows at her.

Math isn't my strong suit, but I *think* Zan is still in-range for Point-Blank Shot bonuses to apply (depending on how high up she is). If not, just subtract 1 from all the rolls above.

Filbert's blast narrowly misses Melisenn but both of Zandormir's arrows strike true, striking her in the sternum. Looking surprised, Melisenn clutches at them feebly before before starting to spasm in mid air. Even though she was dead, her body contiued to float for several minutes before falling like a sack of potatoes with a sickening crunch.

COMBAT OVER. Well congrats, that's the end of Book 2. Melisenn was level 7, the Byakee was CR 4, Asa was lvl 5 and Daelene was lvl 6. Making this in theory a very hard encounter.

Loot:
Melisenn: scroll of cure serious wounds, scroll of
dismissal, scrolls of restoration (2), scroll of sending; +1 chain shirt, +1 rapier, headband of inspired wisdom +2, ring of protection +1, silver unholy symbol of Hastur, powdered diamond (worth 400 gp).

Daelene: wand of scorching ray (13 charges), mwk dagger, amulet of natural armor +1, ring of protection +1, pearl earrings (worth 200g)

Asa: potion of cure moderate wounds, potion of invisibility; mithral shirt, mwk dagger, thieves’ tools, matching gold necklace and bracelet (worth 350 gp together).

Perception DC 20:
Hidden under a number of cushions, you find Melisenn's copy the Pnakotic Manuscripts, an ancient Aklo text that contains information about portals and conjuration magic. The book is relatively large, weighing 10 pounds and containing over 500 pages of parchment. The book also encompasses knowledge about flying polyps, yithians, and many other creatures associated with the gods of the Elder Mythos. Spending a week of continual study grants the reader a +4 circumstance bonus on all Knowledge checks pertaining to conjuration magic or the gods and magic of the Old Cults.

In addition, the book functions as a spellbook and contains the
following arcane spells: gate, greater teleport, greater planar
binding, interplanetary teleport, lesser planar binding,
planar binding, plane shift, teleport, teleport object, and
teleportation circle. Naturally you need to read Aklo to get any usage out of it.

Very good work. Very good work indeed. Agrippa says, exulting.

Now we bury these Stelae, nothing good will come from them...no matter the knowledge that might be gained. Agrippa adds, and he seems a bit haunted by this fact.

GM, are we forgoing loot ala PFS and just figuring out loot at checkpoints?

Zandomir lowers his bow once the last cultist falls to the ground. They had won the battle. But what about the war?

After retrieving his arrows, Zan searches the area and finds a rather massive volume. Though he can't remember exactly where he picked up the skill, Zan understands the language he reads.

"This is a copy of the Pnakotic Manuscripts. It's an ancient Aklo text that contains info about portals and conjuration magic. Could be useful."

Feel free to read the spoiler. It also functions as a spellbook and has a number of spells. Need to be able to read Aklo to understand it.

Noticing Lizzie's blindness, Zan hastens over to her and gives her eyes a cursory inspection. Shaking his head, he says, "The blindness is definitely magical in nature. The cultists couldn't die without leaving us a gift, I suppose. Hold one of our hands and we'll get you out of here and to Winter."

Zan glances over at Lizzie's steed and adds, "And, uh, can you direct it to follow us? Will it cooperate without your direct supervision?"

Also, GM, are we leveling shortly? If so, Zan should be able to deal with Lizzie's blindness if Winter can't.

To clarify re loot, I will hand out some loot but it won't be enough to keep six players at WBL. When you level up you can assume you found items to bring you up to WBL if you're behind. No item found this way can cost more than 1/3 WBL.

Agrippa grabs up the book. Indeed. Perhaps this tome has some knowledge about what the Cult's next plans are.

Zan has a good point, you need to be level 7 at the start of book 3 so grats! Note there will be a little bit of downtime before book 3 starts properly. Essentially you know Lowls is headed to Cassomir (a long way) and you will need to arrange passage. Moreover you know from the notes he went into the dreamlands via means of a ritual to find the Mad Poet to whom he sold your memories. You have no idea what could possibly have commanded such a high price, although it must haven been something terrible.

"Rest easy Lizzie we'll get you to Winter. Gimme a moment Zandomir, gonna put a couple of straps on here to help stabilize Lizzie. Make sure you let her know when going up or down. "

After finishing with the straps, Filbert takes a moment to look over the things the troublesome trio have on them, trying on the ring tht Melissen had on he feels a bit better protected almost as if an extra layer added to his force ward.

Going to collect one of the Ring of Protection +1's

noticing the amulet that Dalene once used, confirms it's use and calls out to Lizzie.

"Lizzie, this here is an amulet that increases natural armor, it would make a great collar for your new dog." Approaching the mount Filbert attempts to wrap it around the dog's neck without the dog becoming alarmed.

I'm guessing you're about done in there? Let me know if there anything you want to check but I think we can mostly hand wave exploring every last nook and cranny. You got all the important stuff. BTW you DO need to take the various books you find with you, along with Lowl's notes. That's assuming you want yo get your memories back and find out what the heck Lowls is really up to.

With the cult routed and a fair bit of care and attention you're able to guide Lizzie and the half dozen battered, drained and traumatized victims up the stairs and out of the compound and into the embrace of the ever-present rain.

All is quiet at first as you trudge towards the Sleepless Building, but you notice one by one a crowd following you. When you stop and they notice the ones you saved a ragged cheer goes up! And wait was somebody chanting your names?

In front of the Sleepless Building you find Cesadia and all her agents. Cesadia herself looks like she's been worrying herself half to death and she stated wiping away tears when you drew close, "I can scarcely believe it you've managed to save some of them! What happened, has the cult been put to the sword?"

Side note about the Star Stelae:
The Star Stelae themselves seem nigh impervious to anything you do try to and destroy them. Fire doesn't touch them, nor does adamantine or acid, or explosives anything else you can think of. Attempts to undermine them mysteriously fail.

Kn:Arcarna DC 25: You've come to realize these are artifacts, perhaps not the strongest ones, but they have stood for millennia. They will likely continue to do so unless very specific conditions come to pass to cause their destruction. Unfortunately the trigger could be almost anything.

Earlier as they were leaving, Filbert will offer the bag of holding to collect all of the various books that Agrippa is sure to want to study when they finally have a moment to rest.

Leading the others back Filbert feels strangely as those surrounding them begin cheering, on one hand proud to have helped contribute to the release, yet on the other not sure his past actions didn't contribute to their being in this situation to begin with. Glad that his aether left him invisible to most, the gnome continues quietly reflecting on the past versus the present and how to reconcile them both.

Reaching the Sleepless Agency, Filbert searches for Cleric Winter, if he's unable to find her heading to the temple to get help for Lizzie.

Zan isn't entirely sure what to make of the crowd following them. It's only been a short while since he and Zarine even joined the group. Surely they don't deserve the same amount of praise. Still, Zan's seen his fair share of praise during his life, directed at others as well as occasionally at himself. It becomes more than a little awkward when someone tries to shun praise. Best to just go along with it.

When the discussion turns to the Star Stelae, Zan says, "If we're certain they can't be destroyed, I think it may be best that we bury them. Yes, we should probably appoint trustworthy watchers, but if the Stelae are impervious to damage, the passage of time may eventually cause people to forget why guarding them is so important. If they're buried, that will at least offer another layer of protection against those who would try to use them for evil."

With the last of the cult dead and as many sacrifices saved as they could Momijii was relieved they came out if it in relatively good shape. The only one in serious trouble was Lizzie but with the enemies dead and secured on her dog she would be fine until they could reach Winter.

When they made it back to the detective agency Momijii was startled to find that people were actually cheering for them. She actually felt relief that the people were seemingly on their side now. It seemed they had finally redeemed themselves, or at least their reputation here, and she was proud of that accomplishment. Despite this she kept an eye out for the assassin just in case.

The relief on Cesadia's face at hearing the cult was palpable, "The higher powers be praised! Well I guess I'd better send a team in to catalog what's left in the mansion and secure it. I expect Lowl's estate will be forfeit to the crown, and there'd be no end of trouble if somebody burnt it down."

She nods gravely when Zandomir suggests burying the Stelae, "I'll see what we can do, although that's no small effort although perhaps with minds concentrated as they are now the towns folk will help out en mass."

Almost shyly Winter approaches and it looked like she was about to say something before noting Lizzie's condition. Looking quietly determined she whispers something to the gnome.

Lizzie:
Winter whisperd something into your ear "Oh my we'll have to do something about that. I'm afraid I prepared the wrong spell, the auguries where not good and I was preparing to bring back the dead... I'm sorry I can't do anything about it today, but tomorrow I'll ask for Pharasma to intercede."

After speaking to Lizzie Winter asks you all, "What will you do now? Did you find out where Lowls went?"

Almost nothing would be able to make it impossible without destroying the mansion itself. With mud from the river, hay from the barn and enough rock we can basically brick up the access to the stellae and once it dries you'd have to chisel your way back down there again. A good stone mason could finish the wall in the crypt so that it is no longer apparent that a path below remains."

Overhearing your answer to Winter's question, Cesadia blows out her cheeks, "Cassomir? That's a fair distance, several months by river. Thing is most of the boats that come here are coal barges from up the Danver, they're no use. You need something fast if you're going to catch Lowls. Hmm what's the date today. Ah..." She does some mental arithmetic before brightening, "In three to four days the Sellen Starling is due to dock. I know the captain a feisty halfling named Skywin Freeling, she owes me a favor or two! The Sellen Starling is one of the fastest river boats around, travailing in her will cut weeks off your trip."

As Lowls’ obsession with esoteric lore grew he delved deeper and deeper into the Dreamlands. The further he went, the more erratic his writing grew. Finding consistent threads among Lowls’s scattered notes and scrawled marginalia is a daunting task, requiring days of meticulous research across disparate sources. Initially, your only clues are hints about Lowls’s trip to the Dreamlands by pouring through his notes and his books. Two of which are particularly noteworthy one is a book of the loremaster and two scrolls of psychic surgery inside, in case of emergency.

Another book has been converted into a clever hiding spot: the centers of the book’s pages have been removed, leaving a space about 6 inches square and 4 inches deep that is undetectable when the book is closed. Inside this space is a miniature staircase masterfully carved from horn and ivory. Although this sculpture is exceedingly valuable in it's own right, it's true purpose makes it invaluable. It's the focus used to enact a very dangerous and complicated ritual that if successful will allow one to travel to the Dreamlands!

To be clear Lowls' notes and his book collection require serious study to be of use. We're talking days or even weeks of continuous study. Even deciphering the ritual to enter The Dreamlands will take the best part of a week and that's just the beginning. I'll explain more later.

If it can be a group effort, Zan should be able to help a bit with the Knowledge (religion) side of things. He won't be any help with the arcane aspects though. It sounds like we'll have some time on the trip even with a speedy boat. Hopefully we won't have to roll to avoid sea-sickness!
