Welcome, travelers, to the 31st decennial Ruby Phoenix Tournament! 128 individuals and teams have signed up, but only one will walk away as the Ruby Phoenix Champion!
Before we get started, let's get the ground rules set. Create your profiles and link them to the discussion forum. Your group isn't an adventuring group just yet, but we'll fix that in fairly short order. Also, please refrain from posting your backstory and such to the profile - again, reasons will become clear as play progresses.
A quick word on combat - I'll be rolling initiative for everyone, PCs and NPCs alike. NPCs are hard stops - everyone before them can take their turn whenever they like, but nobody after them can. There will be quite a bit of combat in this, so I'll do my best to keep things moving.
Let the games begin!

H'lo all. Really looking forward to this game (I so much prefer higher-level campaigns). I'm creating a healing witch -- a class I've never played.
However, I'm about to go to a wedding/on vacation (Aug. 3-9) and don't know how much Internet time I've got. It's possible I'll have none, but it's also possible that I'll be able to check most nights as I tend to stay up a couple hours later than my girlfriend. (Oh, and my profile probably won't be done for a bit still as prep for my trip is killing me right now.)
I know we're not a party, per se, yet, but do we want to at least figure out some common languages?

Hmm, while I've got one idea already brewing (no pun intended), what would you all think about a goblin witch? I've got what I think would be a fun character that I came up with for another campaign before deciding it wouldn't work there, and I realized he/she could work here instead (assuming he/she wouldn't be killed outright by showing up at the tournament).

PCs are special cases, so the fact that your goblin is interested in competing rather than, say, setting the town on fire and eating as many babies as he can find, he should be good.
And Shisumo, there's a very simple explanation for Zarina's lawful alignment on her barbarian.
Which will be given once I come up with it.
Seriously, though, small oversight on my part. Was fixated on the math, missed the alignment bit.
Asha Ghadvhi |
Oni ninja. Just what I always wanted! declares smite target
Would the goblin witch ping Asha's detect evil? It wouldn't keep her from potentially associating with him (Shelynite paladins are really, really big into redemption) but it would definitely change things...

Sorry, another question: Are beasties allowed in the tournament? (I.e. am I just wasting a hex on unnerve beasts or is that something that could come in useful.)
(Making slow and steady progress on my guy. Just a matter of getting time while on vacation, but I think he's totally going to be worth it, what with his *spoiler alert* napoleonic complex and all. Mostly need to figure out gear and spells, the latter of which could slightly affect his feats.)
DM Emissary |
They are. If someone was making a druid PC, then they would be allowed to bring their animal companions. You may or may not run into them during the competition. It has a greater chance of coming into play than, say, the Coven hex. (Spoiler alert: you will not be running into hags at the tournament.)
Asha Ghadvhi |
So we've got a flying archer, a reach-based monk/paladin, a self-buffing barbarian/sorcerer, a goblin healer-witch, and a ninja/conjurer... whose character sheet is cordoned off so we can't see it. It looks like we've got some pretty reasonable damage output, most of us seem to have good saves, but I'm a little worried about a face character or a knowledge specialist. Asha's got some secondary utility at making nice with people, but it's not really a forte...

Hey; I am Ninja! ;) Surprise is the name of the game, or at least a significant part of it. You'll find out about my capabilities soon enough.

I've just got to finish spells and equipment and familiar, I think (plus obviously put this all into an avatar). We're moving on to the hanging out at girlfriend's family's house in Maine part of the vacation today, so it's possible I'll have time to do that before Thursday, but if not, it'll be Friday at the latest.
Here's what I've got so far -- spells at this point are just a first pass at what I'm thinking of getting so not finalized at all. Please feel free to look it over and let me know what you think. This'll be the first witch I've played, so if I'm missing anything, please feel free to speak up (note that the hedge witch archetype means I don't actually need to know any of the cure spells).
He'll definitely be a healer, but also a pretty major debuffer.

Cantrips : Witches can prepare a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells, each day, as noted on Table 2–10 under “Spells per Day.” These spells are cast like any other spell, but they are not expended when cast and may be used again. Cantrips prepared using other spell slots, due to metamagic feats for example, are expended normally.
Spontaneous Healing (Su): A hedge witch can channel stored spell energy into healing spells that she did not prepare ahead of time. The witch can “lose” any prepared spell that is not an orison in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower, even if she doesn't know that cure spell. This replaces the witch's hex gained at 4th level.
Empathic Healing (Su): A hedge witch can minister to a diseased or poisoned target, redirecting the affliction into herself. For a poisoned target, the witch must tend to him as a standard action; he makes his next saving throw against the poison as normal, but the witch suffers the effects of the failed save instead of the poisoned creature. For a diseased target, the witch must tend to the sick person for an hour; he makes his next saving throw against the disease as normal, but the witch suffers the effects of the failed save instead of the diseased creature. The witch does not actually become poisoned or diseased (and is not contagious and does not need to be cured), but suffers the effects of the affliction as if she had been. The witch normally uses this ability to extend the life of someone near death, giving him time to recover. This ability has no effect if the witch is immune to disease or poison. This replaces the witch's hex gained at 8th level.

You might like to invest in Weapon Finesse; if you do find yourself forced to wield weapons, you'll have a better chance of hitting things.

OK, figured Poog was done enough that I could get my first post up, though I still have to do equipment.
One question: Do you mind if I have a dog as a familiar? I figured I'd basically give it the exact same stats as a fox, but wanted to change the breed for color purposes. Also thought of giving a bonus to Fortitude saves instead of Reflex, but again that would mostly be because I don't really think of terriers as being very Dextrous (could also give the scent quality or something else if you want to play with it, but whatever works for you is fine with me)

Couldn't an Imp assume a canine form if it wanted to?
I may be mistaken; I once statted out an Imp in 3.5 and abused the fact that it could assume a Medium form other than its own. The book only stated preferred medium shapes, not mandatory ones. Let's just say the campaign's big bad had an extremely loyal and crafty butler who looked perfectly human, but had easy access to poison and knowledge he shouldn't have had. :P

I'd like to point out that you only need to be within one step of the requisite alignment to summon an Improved Familiar, and quasits can take on a wolf form. Or, if you could manage to be true neutral, cassian angels can, well, take on the shape of dogs, and the idea of a cassian working to redeem a goblin...
Poog Bonebane |
OK, I think Poog should finally be completed. Thanks for letting me play him -- I'm having a blast with him so far.
(Also, he's sort of lying through his teeth, but has no Bluff skill so anyone with Sense Motive can probably figure that out.)

Behold my latest invention! I call this contraption... the Fire Extinguisher! *PSSCHHT!* Whoops. Yeah, it has a bit of a hair trigger. Was anyone doing anything with this fire, here...? ^^

By the way, another game that I'm in (alongside Zarina, as a matter of fact) is resuming after a long hiatus, but we've lost a player in the interim. The recruitment thread is here. The game is Paizo's own Savage Tide. You'd be coming in roughly on the ground floor - we only just hit level 2!
