DM Davy Jones |
Well then someone make a roll or state that they're the first one climbing down!
Nymph |
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
DM Davy Jones |
As Nymph climbs down the cliff face Ayre, Yuki and Galean float by her until they touch the surface of the bay - at which point they plunge into the brackish water.
Nymph you can follow them into the water but once she gets down she feels the edge of the cave with her foot.
The tide sucks you towards the rockface and you bob up into a cavern that runs back into the promontory.
There's no light so you have to light a torch or find another source of light.
In the darkness you see an ugly humanoid figure lurking over a sailor who wavers back and forth like grass blown by the wind.
Nymph |
Playing the one Skinwalker heritage without Darkvision lol
Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
Great. I can't even be useful for a light., grumbles Galean as he sees the dark cave. He grunts and starts swimming with frowny crossed arms.
I think Ayre has Dancing Lights or Light, if not, Galean can summon a small Fire Elemental, but it's not reaaaaally the best choice.
Nymph |
Hello." Nymph flatly says along with a wave.
DM Davy Jones |
Well played Ayre. Well played.
The thing luking above the sailor is hideous - a humanoid creature has slimy, transparent skin; webbed, humanoid hands; and a snaggletoothed, horse-like face.
Knowledge (Nature) to identify.
It seems to be drawing strength from the wan sailor and whirls when Galean's shining...clothing...bursts light into the cavern.
What?! Who are you and why do you intrude upon me?
Nymph |
"We were looking for, I guess, him." Nymph says nonchalantly while pointing at the man.
Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
kn.nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
"Uh, yeah.", mutters Galean, still red from the attention to his... sub-belt area. "Uh, Captain, tell him we're not going to do anything irrational, please?", he says, nervously turning to Yuki, before whispering quietly what he knows about the thing.
Yuki Okano |
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
"Oh hey, we were just trying to find the lookout, did you bring him here? I'm Yuki and these are my friends, what's your name?" The Oracle asks in a friendly manner, perhaps waiting for more information before rushing into battle.
DM Davy Jones |
The creature is a kelpie - an evil fae known for entrancing mortals and then eating them after they drown. Typically they disguise themselves but you apparently interrupted this one as it was about to eat the sailor.
Like all fae it is unpleasant, although kelpie are known to resist fire attacks and to be able to assume the shapes of many magical beasts.
You do not need to be here! Begone and I will forget I saw you.
Nymph |
"I wish we could see the same for seeing you."
Yuki Okano |
"Sorry, we can't do that. I'd tell you to give up, but we both know you aren't going to do that either." With that, Yuki fires at arrow at the kelpie.
Comp longbow : 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 (+1 if within 30 ft for Point-Blank shot)
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 (+1 if PBS if applicable)
Nymph |
The moment she hears the draw of Yukj's bowstring Nymph clucks her tongue before charged at the creature.
Um, can she charge?
DM Davy Jones |
I think you can charge in a surprise round? You get a standard action right?
Initiative (Ayre): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Initiative (Yuki): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Initiative (Galean): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Initiative (Nymph): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Initiative (Monster): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Monster goes first if it lives
The monster sqwaks as Yuki's arrow goes whizzing past.
Nymph |
Yeah, you can charge your normal movement rather than double as part of a surprise round. I was asking more about would the terrain allow a charge?
Ayre |
1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 1 = 27 for 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8 and 2 bleed
to confirm 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 1 = 14 for 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4
Ayre sends a spear flying over Nymph's shoulder and it slams into the beasts chest.
DM Davy Jones |
Oh, sorry - yeah you'd be fine.
The spear from Ayre slams straight into the kelpie and it screeches in pain as it wrenches it out and throws it aside.
Nymph |
K, sorry for the delay.
Shortsword (Charge): 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 + 1 + 2 - 1 = 15
Damage (Slashing, Magical): 1d6 + 3 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 3 = 10
DM Davy Jones |
No worries.
Nymph charges the Kelpie but her mad dash misses the vile creature.
Waiting on Galean.
Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
going on my flight today, I'll post when I arrive.
Galean raises his hands in a spectacular manner (or so he thinks), shouting, "The Albatross Legions will drown you in their tire of wet feathers!"
2nd level Summon Nature's ally, 1d3 ⇒ 3+1 albatrosses.
DM Davy Jones |
The kelpie is outraged that you would dare to interfere with its meal and have the temerity to attack the fey and lashes out at Nymph, who is after all the closest of the interlopers.
Attack (Slam): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Attack (Slam): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Le sigh.
However its attacks prove ineffectual.
The sailor continues to be dazed and unaware of the combat around it.
Nymph |
Snarling back at the fey Nymph lunges and snaps, hoping the fey tasted better than she looked.
Shortsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 = 24

Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Galean draws his cutlass to the approximate position of the heavens, and cries out. "CHAAAAAARGE!", followed by the flapping of four albatrosses. Midway he realises that Yuki is in his way and goes around her sheepishly, muttering a "Sorry." before raising his cutlass again and charging, with significantly less enthusiasm.
Albatross Charge: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 = 20

Albatross Charge: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17
damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
The birds' beaks rend into the creature's skin, drawing out blood. Galean then stands side by side with Nymph. Standing at F12, double bove.
Yuki Okano |
After avoiding nearly being bowled over by the exuberant Galean, Yuki advances with her trusty bow and fires an arrow at the creepy kelpie.
Bow + PBS: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 1 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4
Moved to G8
DM Davy Jones |
Sorry for the delay! I started packing on Thursday for a move and my internet is finally up. Go go scheduled visits.
Galean, how do the albatrosses displace the pirate and Nymph?
The kelpie screams with anger at the wounds that sprout upon it and it responds with a burst of anger against Nymph.

Ayre tries to give the kelpie a shock
Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
I don't think it did, I never moved them. Just assumed positions around the target, and I thought you moved them.
Galean's army of albatrosses continues ravening the kelpie.

I'm assuming that the albatrosses are going to surround the kelpie, thus they get flanking bonuses. For GM's convenience, I'll do the damage as versus target AC:
If AC 14: Damage is 48.
If AC 16: Damage is 41.
If AC 17: Damage is 30.
If AC 18: Damage is 26.
The rest are 22 and above.
The swarm of albatrosses rends the target with their beaks and claws, clearly attracted to the smell of fish. "For gloryyy!", shouts Galean, swinging his cutlass to aid in the combat.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
He nicks the creature's body, a wound barely visible, before straightening upwards and raising his cutlass again.
Yuki Okano |
If the kelpie is still up after the albatross onslaught, Yuki fires two arrows at it.
Arrow 1 + PBS - Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 1 - 2 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Arrow 2 + PBS - Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 - 2 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
DM Davy Jones |
So they didn't actually charge? When I see that term I assume they're taking the combat action and you can't end a charge in someone else's square, which they would have had to do.
The kelpie screams and falls down on the ground under the barrage of attacks, leaving its body to wither. It shrivels like seaweed left to dry in the sun and then blows away into a dust cloud that smells like rotten leaves.
The lookout blinks stupidly then slowly becomes more coherent and comes to.
Wha...where's Rosie?! Rosie?
Tears start running down his face.
She was just here! She came back to me.
Nymph |
"Uhh..." Nymph stupidly lets as she turns to look to Yuki.
Yuki Okano |
With a sad expression, Yuki tries to break it to the guy gently, "I'm so sorry, but the Kelpie used a mind trick on you to make you think it was Rosie. It was about to eat you, but we showed up in the nick of time. Those things can pull some pretty foul tricks, as you can see."
Nymph |
Nymph gives Yuki a discreet thumbs up.
DM Davy Jones |
He'll start blubbering now.
Oh Rosie! Why did I ever let ya go on that ship! I'd heard that rumor but the Deathknell doesn't attack too often! It doesn't, it doesn't!
Ayre |
Ayre, searches the cavern while the talkers talk.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 percep
Galean "Rafter" Santiago |
Galean scratches his head. "Uh, we know a Rosie? Maybe it's the same? Big muscles, knows about as many swear words as Besmara?", he asks, shrugging his shoulders, before clearing his throat. "Right, the Deathknell.", he asks as the albatross army disappears in a cloud of sea mist, which he regards with a salute.
DM Davy Jones |
The kelpie kept no treasure in the room - only the sailor.
Rosie would never swear! She was a good girl, too good for these Isles.
The tears start to well up.
The Deathknell! The ghost ship. She appears in fog they say - tattered sails and a rotten hull with a crew of the undead. Their crew rots and then...and then they take their victims for new crew! Always hungering for new bodies.
He shakes his head.
They say her captain, Pilk, needs to harvest a thousand skulls to free himself from undeath. Poor Rosie!
He continues to cry until you lead him out of the cave and back to the mainland.
Nymph |
"Know anything about ghost stories?" Nymph asks Yuki in a hushed tone as the traumatized man breaks down.
