Khalid moves to flank the closest beast although he takes a rip to the hip that is only partly deflected by his armour.
AOO Bite vs Khalid 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23 hit
1d8 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
If hit FA trip 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 fail
Nuveril is up. Khalid's move puts the back hyenadon and rider back visible to the non-darkvisioners.
Nuveril |
I'm terrible at spatial reasoning, but the gist seems to be that if Nuveril steps forward, she'll provide a flank for Khalid and he for her?
Nuveril slides forward, following her quarry, and seeks to kill the mount quickly before reinforcements join the fight. Throwing her full body into her swings, however, detracts from her precision....
5-foot-step to F 36; Hammer 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 15 damage 1d6 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 = 11 Shield bash 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 16 damage 1d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 4 = 12
Well, at least she's providing a flank, if she can't hit. I guess it's barely possible that 16 might hit a Large creature. Above rolls include Power Attack and flank. Also, last round, when I switched targets from the gnoll to the hyenadon, I forgot to take out the +1 to hit and damage from Gnoll Killer, so you can give the hyenadon one HP back. Unless gnoll's mounts count for the trait, in which case you can add +1 to hit and damage to these rolls. :)
DM Dan E |
Yep you flank hyenadon and rider initially with Khalid. Gnoll Killer is unfortunately gnoll only. Don't forget +1 for pack hunter but a miss on the AC 19 gnoll (hyenadon goes down after Khalid's ready which beats your attack, gnoll becomes unflanked).
Nuveril doesn't manage to land any telling strikes but she does neatly force the hyenadon back into Khalid, the inquisitor slashing the beast across the back of the legs and then sinking Tempest in through a break in its ribs up to the hilt. The hyenadon staggers and drops, its rider sliding off its back (G,35).
Ride check to avoid hit (mounted combat) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 fail
Ride check to avoid fall 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 pass
Linah, Sajan, Zeladiel, Grall although your overdue a map update. You have the remaining mounted pair in L,M,32,33 and one unwounded warrior in G,35.

I did indeed fail to factor in your mobility sorry.

Linah rushes forward to try and do her part of finishing the fight quickly. Her proves to be more of a fight than she expected and he can easily dodge and parry her futile thrusts.

Standard action to attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
sigh, why do i even bother...
when this module is over i need to take some serious time and go through what spells Linah can pick to at least make her remotely useful (assuming she survives that is....).
DM Dan E |
Still need a fort save from Khalid.
Linah's strikes don't cause the gnoll warrior much difficulty although he remains poorly positioned to defend against Sajan as well, the monk landing several heavy blows to the ribs that come close to felling it.
Zeladiel's arrow misses to the left by several feet, drawing the attention of the archer but he seems to have several better well-lit targets in the rest of you in the middle of the chamber.
Grall moves to finish the warrior but is frustratingly turned back between its scimitar and shield. Surrounded by enemies, nearly dead and with nowhere to go, it lashes out at Linah, sweeping her scimitar out of alignment and landing a bruising cut to her side while screaming in gnoll.
I will die but the prriests of Rovagug will feast on yourr corrpse, sun-b%#@$! Forr the Carrion King!

Round 4
Ordered Initiative
Archer gnoll and mount 19
Khalid 18a
Nuveril 18b
Linah 17
Sajan 10
Zeladiel 6a
Grall 6b
Scimitar gnoll 3b
Effects
- Bless (all)
- Mage Armour (Zeladiel, Sajan)
- Gravity Bow (Zeladiel)
- Blur (Grall)
- Light (Khalid, Linah)
Notes
- Note light rules. A light spell generates 20' of normal light and 20' of dim light (20% miss). Zeladiel doubles the later to 40'.
- A rider on a mount larger than its target gains higher ground bonus, a rider counts as being in each square of its mount.
The archer takes a parting shot at Khalid before squeezing its fairly reluctant mount down the sw steps and out of sight. The inquisitor reads the shot though, spinning aside and letting it miss to the right.
Arrow vs Khalid 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 = 18 miss
1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
Khalid (with another fort save please), Nuveril. You have the single barely standing gnoll warrior left of visible targets.
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
Still need a fort save from Khalid.
The Round 3 save was the first line in this post, the result was a 16.
Round 4:
Fortitude Save:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Protection Judgement still active. (AC 22)
Khalid steps into a flanking position with Linah to attack the remaining gnoll warrior, hacking at the creature with Tempest...
Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 1 + 2 = 17 (bless, flank)
Damage:1d6 + 5 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 5 + (2) + (2) = 14 (precise strike, frost)
Nuveril |
Sounds like everyone's clustered around this one gnoll, but I'm not sure exactly where (Linah's in F 34, both Khalid and Grall said they were stepping to H 34, and I don't know where Sajan is). I'm assuming both that she's not flanking and that everyone else crowding around prevents her from getting into a position to flank.
Clearly angry that the final mounted gnoll got away, Nuveril swings at the surrounded gnoll half-heartedly, her mind already pursuring more interesting targets. "We should follow it," she growls. "Claim the higher ground and prevent it from bringing up reinforcements." Hammer 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Shield bash 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Nuveril |
Zeladiel wanted us to fall back to the corridor and wait for the reinforcements so we don't get swarmed. Nuveril wants to go after the hyenadon, but then we're likely to get caught between attackers below and above. Besides, I assume we're wanting to make it back to the surface eventually. If we had any idea where the Carrion King is, we could make a bee-line for him, but it looks like we're going to have to fight every gnoll in the valley anyway, now that the alarm's been sounded. Maybe fight our way upstairs and hope we get somewhere with some light so we're not constantly dealing with miss chances and archers who can see us when we can't see them?
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |

Fortitude Save #5:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Grall |
As the party starts to talk about where to go....
Cut the head off of a snake and its body will die. If we destrrroy the Carrion King, the Gnolls will not stay together and fight us...we must kill him if we have the chance, beforrre he can brrring the Gnolls above to bear on us.
The gnoll went down some stairs, not up correct?

Rider went down the sw steps yes. The ne ones closer to you go up.
Zeladiel Araxyll |
Zeladiel casts detect magic and goes over the fallen bodies.
"If we're not fortifying here, I agree with Nuveril and Grall. Head down after that archer. He may lead us to the Carrion King. Though from what the gnolls were saying, I suspect he's already on his way. Better we fortify against them than they fortify against us.
Grall |
For once the Gnoll seems emphatic about his opinion...
The longerrr we wait, the betterrr prrreparred and the morrre forrrces they can bring against us. Time is on theirrr side...
he then relents and waits for the group to make its decision...watching the stairs going down....
Grall will move over to the top of the stairs going down and listen
Take a 10 for a 20.
Nuveril |
"Which way is he?" Nuveril spits angrily. "Up or down?"
Do the Gnoll speakers know which way the Carrion King is? I'm just thinking that up will eventually allow those of us without low-light or darkvision to be less handicapped. All it takes is one spellcaster with darkness to screw us over but good.
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
Linah doesn't relish the thought of running headlong into the maw of the beast, but she is not about to be argue with the group. This is when we need you the most. Please guide my hand when the moment comes, she thinks then turns to Khalid. "I am with you", she states as much to the inqusitor as to Sarenrae herself. She spreads her arms like wings to close the wounds of those around her.
Channel positive energy to heal: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3) = 10

Therrre werrre crrries frrrom below to warrrn the carrrrion king, down is prrrobably wherrre ourrr prrrey is located...
DM Dan E |
You recover the two gnoll's masterwork scimitars while Linah's channel aids those wounded. You actually came out of that not to bad off at all.
Grall moves toward the steps. He catches sight of some flickering shadows from below, it looks like there are at least some sources of light. As before, he can hear what sounds like many gnolls, mostly confused, although a powerful bass voice has started issuing orders, diminishing the chaso somewhat and the calls to warn the Carrion King continue.
Its only been a few moments but it doesn't look like any enemy force is about to rush you. The shock of your assault this deep into their fortress seems to have them on the back foot.
Just a reminder that you have a few hundred gnolls a few miles away on the surface. Assume Grall is listening at this point rather than moving to the top of the steps.
So decisions, decisions.
Zeladiel Araxyll |
"Down."
Zeladiel takes out his small pearl, places a hand on Sajan and mutters an incantation. The giant grows even larger, like an ogre unfurling. As Zeladiel makes his way towards Grall, he grips the pearl, focusing on the spent magic and drawing it back to him. Zeladiel casts a second enlarge person on Grall.
Zeladiel throws his arms wide to embrace the group, and as the magic settles on them their actions speed up. (haste everyone except himself)
"Let's see if they're ready for us now."
Sajan Krama Sumna |
As Zeladiel is casting his magic, Sajan is busy lighting a bullseye lantern he keeps in his pack with flint and steel and pouring six hours worth of oil within it.
I've had this lantern since starting wealth and I think this is the first time i've had cause to use it. "A bullseye lantern provides normal light in a 60-foot cone and increases the light level by one step in the area beyond that, out to a 120-foot cone (darkness becomes dim light and dim light becomes normal light). A bullseye lantern does not increase the light level in normal light or bright light. A lantern burns for 6 hours on one pint of oil. You can carry a lantern in one hand.".
Sajan places a massive hand upon the Elf's shoulder momentarily, nodding his thanks.
Full speed ahead! I don't actually need both hands free and the range is better than a light spell anyway.
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
Linah closes the last of Grall's wounds with a flick of her wand. She thanks Zeladiel for the bolstering effect then follows Khalid down the stairs, citing a prayer of protection to Sarenrae.
Cure light wounds on Grall: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Cast Protection from Evil on myself.
Would Nuveril accept a Bull's Strength? Perhaps one of the gentlemen would like one?
Nuveril |
Would Nuveril accept a Bull's Strength? Perhaps one of the gentlemen would like one?
If she can get it done in the time we have. She ought to have seen Zeladiel and Linah buffing Sajan and Grall enough not to think something unthinkable is going to happen to her, and it's not like energy resistance where if it wears off, she's going to go up in flames; the worst that will happen is she'll go back to her normal strength. And it would be nice to do more than lightly bruise the enemies.

We may want to time the haste to cast just as we head down....Sajan and I have at least a 70' move with haste so we are very fast but no point in wasting a couple of rouns while we cast spells and get over to the stairs...
DM Dan E |
So.
Zeladiel (Enlarge- Grall, enlarge - Sajan, haste?)
Khalid (SoF, Weapon of Awe)
Linah (Prot Evil, Bull Strength (scroll - Nuveril), others?)
Can Linah in particular confirm, I'll pick up for Zeladiel if David isn't around, suspect his goal was to ensure he got Nuveril in the haste. Bless, Blur and Gravity Arrow are still up although prep time eating into their duration.
