DM Dan E’s Legacy of Fire (Inactive)

Game Master Dan E

Recruited to reclaim the town of Kelmarane from a tribe of gnolls, six adventurers find themselves caught up in a series of events that may change the face of Katapesh: the Legacy of Fire.

For Linah thanks for the confirm on the spells. So no dispel magic attempt then? Depending on how I go tonight I'll update.

Linah was fairly vocal in not wanting to open it so I think just move on. I had nothing to post except 'Sajan waits' and no change to status.

Very well then.

Zeladiel uses his scroll on Grall to no visible effect :) while Linah incants a quick bless spell.

Grall quickly guides Sajan and Nuveril forward a little way into the darkness while Linah, Khalid and Zeladiel hold back with the lights. Feel free to switch around order and light sources.

Grall leaves the two warriors, getting as close as he can in preparation for a rush.

Update to follow.

Yep, Linah is not interested in trying to open the door. A direct command from Khalid would change her mind though.

Bolstered by the encouraging effect of her bless spell Linah grips her scimitar and shield and waits for Khalid's command to begin the assault.

OK further mini-crisis over. Lets get into it.

Pre-surprise round MAP.

Khalid and Linah do their best to shield their lights, Zeladiel waiting nearby cradling his bow, while Sajan and Nuveril shuffle forward in darkness, acutely aware that ahead wait foes that can see better than they.

Ahead a creeping, invisible Grall makes his move...

Only Grall can see obviously. Falchion out and extended, Grall pounds toward the hyenadon and its rider. The beast seems to scent him quickly, yipping loudly in warning and alerting its rider. It sniffs the air but before it can react further Grall is already inside its reach.

Functionally it scents you at 30' initiating the surprise round. It takes a move action to confirm your direction but that doesn't reveal distance until your within 5' (and thus no AOO).

As Grall launches his attack he can see two more hyenadons and their riders further into the room. In the south west section a great stone staircase (twin to the one in the north east) leads down. This seems to be the source of the noise (and, it would seem, the even worse smell).

There are wide exits to the west and south (rubble blocking much of the later although it seems climbable).

True, add in the charge, I can attack from prone :)

Grall's falchion slices deeply into the hyenadon's shoulder as it yelps in pain. The gnoll becomes visible although he is delighted to note that the beast is slow to react to his positioning, snapping out slightly to his right.

Yep animals only have low-light not darkvision and there is currently none to use.

The gnoll beyond and to the south east of Grall's target hefts a composite longbow in one hand while dipping an arrow into a pouch at its side with the other.

Assuming the dotted-line barrier prevents a charge? Probably not a smart idea anyway, but Nuveril's not known for making the smart choices. :)

That will spread dim light conditions to the melee but not show the combatants beyond. I'll update the map at the tail of round 1 with more light templates.

Note I missed Grall's blur in the effects above, factoring it in though.

It will. Obviously didn't apply to Grall as he could position himself around. Note sure if its clear from the descriptions above but the barriers are only a few feet high, they aren't blocking LOS (Nuveril can get up on tippy toes.

As Khalid runs past her, his illumination reveals Grall locked in melee with the hyenadon and its rider. She follows the light, eager to join the gnoll in battle, but the barrier breaks her stride. Taking up a position behind the partial cover of the broken wall, she readies herself for attack from whatever could be awaiting unseen in the darkness. Jogged my memory. You may or may not recall I had previously ruled against this, partly in my mind because of the existence of Acrobatic Charge from the duelist prestige class which seems to let you do just this.

In view of HERE though, I'm going to revert and say it is OK. Don't think its the greatest ruling ever but I'm not anti enough to house rule.

Note still a problem if he needs to move through someone else.

Khalid and Nuveril move up using the cover of the barriers partial cover for both while Linah scoots along behind the halfling. C,-38 I think you mean.

The gnolls stare at the illuminated group in evident surprise, the rider of the beast Grall attacked still scrambling for his wits and weapon.

The beast itself doesn't need direction to lash out at the barbarian, ripping at his left arm with its powerful jaws. Grall is very nearly pulled from his feet but the warrior lowers his centre of gravity and stands his ground.

I have 80 feet charge and the Hyendadon is about 60 feet from me, seems I easily have the movement to tumble to avoid AOO too.

Sajan rushes down the long hallway, clearing the barrier in his path but failing to avoid a potential bite from the Hyenadon as he closes. If he successfully arrives, he slams his fist into the Hyenadon's snout.

Should have rolled a miss chance for the bite on Grall 1d100 ⇒ 100. One also for Sajan if he manages to close 1d100 ⇒ 5 and Zeladiel 1d100 ⇒ 83.

Sajan's charge brings him into the fray. His target lunges out as he closes, nearly throwing its off-balance rider. The attack is accurate though, the beast managing to close its powerful jaws around Sajan's elbow and in its frenzied thrashing, even the powerful monk is jerked from his feet.

This leaves him prone in D,39.

Zeladiel sends an arrow hissing in over Sajan's prone form, the enchanted arrow sinking deeply into the beast's side.

As above think Linah is in C,38. Your taking cover penalties in the 38 line while having a clear shot in 39 so I'll put you there.

1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 = 9

Khalid, Nuveril etc.

Between the shouts, sound of combat and explosion the inhabitants of the Temple seem to be rousing. Over the din you can hear gnolls yipping and calling to each other. Most of the noise seems to come from the SW steps down, where it seems as if there are many gnolls, but you can also hear fainter calls from above (the NE steps) and from beyond the western exit on this level.

Gnoll:

From below you can hear the archer's call being taken up. Warrn the King, the Carrion King!

And others Call Madfang, unleash the Unchosen!

HP: 49/49 AC: 22 Init: +6 Kelishite Human Inquisitor 7

Fortitude Save:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Khalid moves into a postion to set up a flank with Nuveril and Grall, attempting to dive past a potential attack from the hyenadon in the process. Once one of his companions is in position, the inquisitor strikes at the massive beast...

Protection Judgement still active (AC 22, 26 vs. AoO); Ending in (I,36) or (J,36) depending on the answer to my question in the OOC thread.

Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 1 + 2 = 22 (bless, flank)
Damage:1d6 + 5 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (5) + (3) = 15 (precise strike, frost)

EDIT: Crap...forgot to roll the acrobatics, here it is...

Acrobatics:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

EDIT #2: Well, here's to hoping it misses me.
