From a gamer perspective, I know I am at max Hero Points, and with the conclusion of the ark, we'll likely get another. So it would be prudent to spend it. Alas, I think with being surprised it's rather fitting that Lia gets "shocked" and stunned. So I'll roll with flavor there.

On a further note, also remember that you guys did not HAVE to re-roll, you can also spend a hero point on a bonus AFTER the roll - the +4 provided would have pushed both of you to safe territory, while the re-roll was still a gamble :) This time it was fine, just saying.

Finally: I suppose the Screech was the creatures surprise round action. That means some of you may still have actions if you made the save, BEFORE the creatures first turn comes up. Karmid and Ro, specifically.(even if it's out of reach, you can e.g. ready an attack).

It Came From Above, Surprise Round

The creature screeches horribly, freezing your blood in your veins, although Karmid, Ro, and Jili are able to shake off the sensation.

Karmid and Ro may take actions in the surprise round. If you could have acted during the surprise round (by having made the successful Perception check) but were paralyzed, you may count the surprise round as your first round of paralysis.

The creature is currently out of melee range, about 20' up the vertical shaft. If you want to shoot missile weapons at it, it gains cover unless you're standing directly below it.

I already declared a defensive state earlier as my surprise round action really. Its only partial defense (+2AC) since I don't have an entire round to perform a full defensive actions. Once I have a full round action then I will decide what to do next. If it doesn't approach now, its screech was wasted mostly.

"Its an infected giant-ghoul-bat thing! Somebody shoot it before it comes down here! I will cover you!"

Karmid then proceeds to slam the head of his hammer into his klar to get the things' attention...

"Tasty morsel right here! Come get me!"

Ro's surprise round was used to activate Archaeologist's Luck and cast Returning Weapon. If I can go ahead with 1st round actions Ro will enchant her starknife and make a ranged attack with it.

As soon as Ro has finished her spell, she sends a bit of her surplus magic into the starknife to enchant it. Without pause she sends it spinning toward the dark form. There's nothing good to be found in or under the house, so it's best to get on with killing whatever it is.

The creature swoops down out of the darkness, a gigantic, decaying, bat-like creature. It lands on its hind legs in front of Karmid, snapping at him with its massive jaws and inflicting a nasty wound in his shoulder.

Karmid: Cool. I just go with what you have posted in your header, but that hit will indeed turn into a miss.

The group continues pounding the grounded undead bat until it stops moving and lets out a hollow death rattle.

Combat over

With things under control, you look around the cavern, paying particular attention to the three human corpses. Judging from their dress, two of them appear to have been Varisian nomads, while the third looks Chelaxian. Going through their pockets you also notice that the Chelaxian only has one arm, and not because the skaveling tore it off; he seems to have been missing one for quite some time.

The skaveling clearly wasn't interested in treasure, as the Chelaxian is wearing a pearl-encrusted ring (easily worth 300 gp), has a money purse with 56 gp in assorted coins, carries a longsword made of adamantine, and has some kind of magical hat in his pocket.

DC 20 Knowledge (local):
You remember seeing a picture of this man on a wanted poster in the Sandpoint Town Watch headquarters. The one-armed Chelaxian is most likely the notorious bandit Shaz "Redshiv" Bilger, suspected of organizing the robbery of nearly two dozen merchant convoys along the Lost Coast Road over the past decade. You have heard that delivering proof of his demise to the watch in Magnimar will bring a substantial reward.

"Can you...or any of you use it? Its worth a fortune in metal and as a normal weapon it is unparalleled. If its enchanted you could cut through stone or solid metal from what I understand...sometimes...with a decent swing. In other parts of the world its called 'Starmetal.'"

Unless Edgar or one of you want it specifically to use it as a primary weapon, we might be better off seeing if we can trade the sword in Magnimar for something cash or similar...an adamantine longsword for an adamantine dagger or two? Anyone here can use a dagger I'm pretty sure. If we can reclaim the metal...that sounds doubtful without some major magic I think to 'reshape' it properly. Although an Adamantine klar would be so kinda awesome!

I've been reading and playing in games lately where players take a greater part in world building, so in that spirit I'd like to leave the fate of the adamantine sword up to all of you. If you want to have it reforged into a klar, I think that would be a splendid idea. I don't think your local smith would have the facilities to do that, however. It might require some dwarven artisans, but I'll leave that up to whoever would like to "run with it".

I wouldn't complain, but its valuable either way. As long as it gets used, I think that's all that matters here to me. Its a great 'find' item, even if its non-magical for now. It is literally worth more than its weight in gold for a good reason in game terms.

If there's some left-over after the klar for a Starknife, or even just a Dagger or Athame, I would love it. The "ignore hardness" thing makes it just a superior 'tool' beyond just being a weapon. Of course, mechanically, the price is per "Weapon" which is kind of ridiculous(a Halfling Dagger costing as much extra as a Ogre Butchering Axe.) but necessary for balance-reasons. But then, Lia is not really a weapon-user so giving her something out of Adamantine would not really 'empower' her. She'd probably use it to scratch "Lia was here" into buildings, paint butterflies on diverse surfaces, and peel fruit.

"Hum. Why did you do that?", Lia wonders, looking at the head and trying to mimic it's facial expression: "Now he can't walk by himself and you have to carry it. We could have disguised him and he could have turned himself in. Right, ..." Lia turns and looks around for the Undead girl she charmed earlier: "Hey, where'd my friend go?"

You leave behind the dark cave with the body of the undead bat-thing, and climb up the narrow stairs to the ground floor of the haunted house. So many things have happened in the last day that seems hard to wrap your head around all of them.

You enter the main floor lobby and pause for a moment behind the stuffed manticore, nervous that it might come to life once again. Karmid leads the way and steps forward boldly and to everyone's relief, the statue remains silent.

You regroup once you are out of sight of the cursed manor and find a secluded place to sit down, treat wounds, get a bite to eat, or take a drink of water. Memories of everything that has transpired here race through your head, and you keep on looking back in the direction of Misgivings, thinking that something dark and depraved must be still following you.

You may summarize our communal experience in Misgivings as you like, or post something about the trip back to Sandpoint. Nothing negative will happen along the way and you won't run into anyone.

Waiting for Karmid to get a fire started, she then throws the first makeshift torch through a window in the upper floor.

Burning the house down will take quite a bit of work as it is very old and very damp. Your small group could accomplish it, but it would probably take several days just to gather enough dry firewood unless you can make some truly spectacular Survival checks. Other options include going back to Sandpoint and getting a posse to help with the "grunt work".(

GM:
Some OOC, but I suspect we are pretty done with this story arc when we return to Sandpoint. Which would mean one Hero Point 'recharges'...since I am full, I could spend one on Special: You can petition the GM to allow a hero point to be used to attempt nearly anything that would normally be almost impossible. Such uses are not guaranteed and should be considered carefully by the GM. - specifically use magic to ignire the place. I'd imagine it as Lia using her SLA's (Silent Image and Minor Image) to create an illusion of fire in several places, then use the Hero Point to "turn it real". It would allow us to fast-forward this...unless the manor still plays a role later in the story. I am sure we'll try and get rid of it knowing it's infused with evil. If it IS relevant later, you can just tell me to leave it alone for now, and Lia will instead insist on having Father Zantus properly cleanse the place from evil before turning it to ashes - lest the evil seeps into the ground, the river, the air and corrupts the whole area nearby.

I would be totally up for that, Lia. Feel free to narrate as you fit and others can add to if if they choose.

Can any of us 'summon monsters' or 'nature's allies'? Fire elementals running about in a house can dry things out pretty quickly...Fireball spells? Flaming spheres spells?

Survival: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
As they throw the first makeshift torches at the House, the oily rags remaining and smoke emerging, but the fire not catching, Lia seems to grow agitated.
"You are supposed to burn. You killed so many. You made Aldern kill. You are evil!"
Survival: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Again, some more torches, some rags landing on parts of the roof or decor elements on the outside, burning, but not spreading.
"I saw you burn. You will burn."
All of a sudden, major parts of the house seem to be engulfed in flames, with hisses and croaking, and cracking of wood. Alas, one of the rooms on fire is the entrance hall, only some feet away, and the clear lack of Heat suggests that is is a mere illusion.
"Your line ended. You end.", Lia shouts at the house, as even more illusional flames cover areas spared by the first burst.
Just as one of her comrades tries to calm her down, a hand placed on her shoulder, Lia screams:"BURN!" in a shrill voice and at a volume one would not expect from the petite girl.

And suddenly, there IS heat. Lots of heat. In a Flashover, the previously illusionary flames catch hold of anything there is to burn in their areas. Windows burst, with a Backdraft spreading the fires further as fresh air is drawn into the stale rooms.
As the entrance hall all but explodes in a fiery combustion, Lia is thrown away and falls down backwards, a few feet further back from the house.
With a defiant expression, she sits up and glares at the fire :"Told you so!"

Mechanics:
Minor Image, which lasts concentration+2 rounds, then Silent Image, which lasts concentration, both of Fire in the House for 9 10-foot cubes each(18 10-foot cubes total). Then spending a Hero Point as allowed by GM to turn the illusionary Fire real.
Above her league from a pure power perspective, but mechanically ok since it only saves us from backtracking to get it done, AND she is very emotionally invested into this...so she just draws from a future reality where the house already IS on fire, and makes it HER reality.

As for Drasven, he claps thrice and puts his palms together in prayer as he recited a litany for the dead (and probably for the unwilling undead.)

He is impressed that Lia could burn the house down with her conviction alone. She would make a fine priest for a deity who graces Lia with her favor.

Despite is moldering appearance, the entire house goes up in the whirlwind of flame instigated by a chosen of Desna. As you watch it burn, hundreds of moths, butterflies, and other flying insects come streaming out of the forest and alight upon nearby branches and bushes. At first it seems they are drawn to the flame, but with time you see that they simply seem to be witnessing the event far from the heat.

As the upper stories begin to collapse you hear a bass groaning coming from somewhere far beneath the manor. I climbs to a wail that matches the pitch of the steam escaping from the burning timbers until it too fades away.

Ro glumly helps with the burning of the house as she can. She carries fuel for it and so forth.

It's not that Ro has anything against the idea of burning the place, she can't think of anything better to do about it. The house might well still be the cause of future problems if left standing.

Really though, the house itself is not the thing. It was just a building until it was stained by the things the family living there did to each other over the generations. Ro has now witnessed what the house had, and felt similarly stained by knowing what people were capable of doing to those who they were supposedly closest to.

After they have all watched the house's final collapse into a pile of flames Ro suggests they start back to Sandpoint, but only for as long as absolutely necessary.

"Will a day in Sandpoint be enough for everyone? We should keep it to no more than that long. We need to get on our way down to Magnimar as fast as we can so we can finish cleaning this mess up and be done with it."

Hey, that place was not just 'stained', that was a failed lich - I think that's a few amplitudes higher on the 'Needs-to-burn'-Scale. :)

Lia stares at the flames wordlessly, and almost unblinkingly. Only after the final collapse does she manage to tear her attention away from the ruins:"We are going to Magnimar? For vacation?", she seems puzzled at the prospect.
More like I'll have to re-read stuff, but it translates perfectly well into her being confused about it as well.

"Yeah Lia, I suppose it's a vacation in a way."

Ro is more focused on the psychological and emotional aspects than the magical power scale, the part that burning doesn't undo. I'd have to go back and look for the specifics as well. We found documents of some kind that pointed toward a bigger "boss" in Magnimar that was directing Aldern Foxglove.

Ro's intent is dual for wanting to get to Magnimar with all speed. First she wants to get there before word arrives that the mansion has been burned, which would probably cause the target there to either prepare for trouble or go underground. Second she'd rather avoid Rynshinn right now. Ro is running very low on warm fuzzies at the moment.
