Come out, come out, sneaky little thing, there aint no fooling a dwarf. You get yer head chopped off if ye dont! stating it much louder than originally planned (not yelling but not whispering). Grungar readys his falchion and slowly approaches the crawling person.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Fortunately the dwarf's words don't carry well over the noise of the weather, but the rest of the party can at least tell he said something. Grungar, as you near the crawler you see that it's actually a wolf. That's the first glance. Second impression is that its right foreleg is broken. As it moves to attack you, though, you realize from the smell that it's another zombie.

Take your attack on it; it charges you and will bite you at the same time as you hit it. Take 10 HP from its bite unless you manage to kill it in one shot; in any case it won't knock you down.

Would Conner have heard Grungar while searching the perimeter, and what has he seen out and about?

Weakly Godlike Entity

Conner definitely hears Grungar.

Conner, you went in the opposite direction from Dashel and a ways further out from the hut and clearing. You're getting a pretty good idea of the lay of the land when you find a set of tracks that seem to be from a lamed wolf, leading in the general direction of the clearing; following them, you catch a glimpse of the wolf leaping at Grungar in the darkness.

Conner will draw his Longsword and move in closer to Grungar, and he studies the wolf making it his favored target.

I assume that I cannot reach him on this turn. I will study after full movement, and charge to a flanking position the fololowing round if Grungar does not fell the beast.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Grungar cleaves its spine and sends it crashing to the ground. It writhes impotently and silently until the magic animating it ceases.

Bah, bloody magic! Grungar looks around and if possible signals the others to come over and when they do he tells them that it was not a real wolf, but some crazy magic.

Conner sheathes his Longsword, and he again draws his bow as he approaches Grungar.

Good work, Grungar. The perimeter was secure with the exception of the tracks made by this beast which led me back here. So, any ideas on how to approach the charge, if at all? Or, do we just set up camp out here in the woods nearby?

Up to me, I say lets go find that finger waggin' mage and kill em! no offense. If there is one thing I know about those finger waggers, its that they don't stop with just one little tiny wolf! I don't want to be sitting around waiting for them to come sneaky up like a baby, no offense, and attack me with some finger waggin' fire contraption thing!

Weakly Godlike Entity

To clarify, it was definitely a real wolf--or had been at one point, anyway, and probably not too long ago.

that helps clarify it for me I misread the way it died now that I reread it makes more sense, but I doubt Grungar would see it as a real wolf, lol

Dashel, it's a wolf that's been animated after death. Apart from the massive gash inflicted by the dwarf, you notice that its leg was also damaged antemortem, and it also has a puncture wound near its throat.

The rain has largely stopped by now, although the trees are saturated so it'll be drippy for quite some time. Fortunately Conner found an abandoned hut about a quarter-mile away; the roof is gone, but the foundation wall remains. There are signs that travelers have used it for shelter before, though not for at least a week.

Besmarial volunteers to hide out in the tree cover to listen to what the pair has to say, since it is the only one of you who's sure to be able to understand them.

Drovic falls back from the house, then focuses on seeing what paths come to and from the house. Then he looks at what route somebody would use if they wanted to come unnoticed.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Drovic, the paths here follow game trails, pretty much, and the house isn't set up with defense in mind. The door faces the most well-traveled path, while there's no particular line of sight to the other one.

Weakly Godlike Entity

The rest of the night passes uneventfully. Next morning, the weather is definitely more pleasant than the previous day, although it's still kind of damp under the trees.

What are your plans for surveillance today? You figure that staying a second night in the fallen hut might not be a good idea, especially if anyone happens by and sees signs of habitation.

Drovic tries to find a high place near the house where he can examine both the house and the surrounding landscape. He spends the day up there in silence and stillness, chewing trail rations and watching over the area.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Drovic, you can tell from the smoke that there's a small cluster of probable houses a bit over a mile south of here. Besmarial stays up near you early in the day when the man leaves, so that the angel can translate any conversation. As it happens, there's some. Most of it is banal, but there are a few bits of information--"Good-bye, dear, say hello to Mwailu and Themis for me. Be careful, we still don't know what happened to Vak. Remember, his wife is supposed to come by later with Twil, so don't bother hurrying home. Now give your daughter a kiss and get out of here."

My thought that was either Dashel or Conner. Dashel because he's easy going enough and pious. Conner because he could pass as woodsman. Drovic would probably be best serve near the house. And well...I laughed when I though of the dwarf.

"Aye, our charge is the child but there is danger out there we met orcs already. There is a missing person Vak, and well this family doesn't need to lose the paternal support." He looks at everyone. "he's not suppose to be gone long...overnight at best."

Weakly Godlike Entity

I'm going to assume for now that Dashel and Grungar are out in the forest watching the less-used path, while Drovic follows the father, Conner does slow wide circuits around the house, and Besmarial keeps the watchers in contact.

Drovic:
You follow the man at a fair distance, keeping to the shadows and generally being hard to see. The man carries a hatchet with a hammer head opposite the axe and a bundle of canvas, sticks, and rope of uncertain use. He seems a little nervous, frequently looking behind him and trying to hurry. When another voice calls out to him from up ahead he starts, then visibly relaxes and answers. Two other men join him, one dusky-skinned and the other pale and dark-haired. Both of them have the same sort of tool and bundle. They chat for a bit then head off into the forest, following a narrower trail that branches from the main. You are about to follow them when you notice something rather distressing.

About fifty feet from the main trail, away from where the father and (presumably) Mwailu and Themis are going, you catch a hint of something large moving. Approaching it to investigate further, you see that it's a troll; the creature has not noticed you yet. It is accompanied by a pair of ogres; one makes to follow the men, but the troll puts a massive paw on its shoulder and shakes its head. There is a muffled conversation in a language you don't understand, then the trio begins to slowly head back in the direction of the hut.

Conner:
You're crossing the main trail that the father took south, about a half mile from the hut, when you notice something rather distressing. A set of clawed tracks, fairly recent (within the last hour or less), heading north along the path. You figure they were left by something humanoid, upright and bipedal, probably over eight feet tall and weighing about twice what a typical human does. The tracks go north a few hundred feet, then head off into the forest.

Dice rolls:
Drovic Perception check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

I should of went instead of elf, no need for stealth, I could strike up a good conversation with anybody, us dwarves are good with talking and making drinkin' buddies/

Weakly Godlike Entity

Drovic:
They're sauntering, not moving particularly quickly. Unless they speed up for some reason, you figure you can get back to the hut well ahead of them.

Conner:
The trail is easy to follow, not just for the tracks but for the occasional set of parallel scratches on larger trees. They run about your head height; whatever left them had roughly human-shaped hands but about twice normal size. You figure you're approaching the northern path to the house (the tracks having gone wide around it) when, over the course of about twenty feet, the tracks change. They go from bare clawed feet to shod normal human-sized tracks, not only in appearance but in spacing. In fact, based on the spacing you're pretty sure that the new shape is a little shorter than average height, and shuffling with the aid of a walking stick.

Dashel and Grungar:
Grungar, Dashel, and Besmarial are watching the northern trail when the angel suddenly bobs up. "There is someone on the path." A moment later Grungar hears it too...what sounds like an old woman, singing quietly as she shuffles along. Besmarial transforms into a small child of indeterminate gender just before an old woman comes into view, hobbling down the path. She has a walking stick and a pack on her back; a few strands of stringy gray hair stick out around the headscarf she wears. She stops and looks into the forest directly at you, then smiles and says something in a language that neither of you understand. Besmarial translates quietly. "She's telling us that we can come out, because she won't hurt us."

Dice rolls:

Drovic:
You won't be back before some other things start happening, so I'll try to set things up for you. There's no other traffic on the path as you hurry back. You know the plan--Dashel and Grungar guarding the north access, Conner on the move, and Besmarial watching high and keeping everyone in the loop as much as possible. With the magnitude of the threat, it seems that unless you run into Conner or Besmarial the best way to contact the others is to slip along the edge of the clearing and count on your stealth to keep you hidden from the woman. She's not outside as you enter the clearing; you're pretty sure that you avoided being seen, but the sharp intake of breath you clearly hear behind you as you leave the clearing indicates that you might be in error (unless you had any magic you were going to use during the crossing).
