Beyond the secret door, a tropical jungle fills this large room, complete with thick plants, loamy soil, and a large pool. The stone walls are painted to appear as more jungle. Strange, white pebbles are scattered across the soil.

An enormous black anaconda occupies this chamber, a mass of coil and scales that must be upwards of 50-feet-long! It is currently wrapped around the body of one of the rakshasas you flushed down the pool, jaws spread wide as it works to swallow her corpse whole. Fortunately, its meal is keeping it occupied for the time being...

A door exits the room to the west.

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Melodie focuses and whispers a spell into the snakes mind.

Charm Monster, -4 will etc etc.

Will: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 5 - 4 = 18

The snake eyes Melodie happily--or at least what passes for happiness among ophidian emotions. They just became best friends!

"And what the hells are you going to do with that?" Zhi asks her wife, looking over the huge reptile. She glances at the other exit. "Unless you're planning on sending it ...?"

She walks over to the other door and checks it for traps before opening it.

Perception: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (5) + 19 = 24

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

"Well I don't want it to escape or try and eat us..." Melodie responds. "Sara? Do you want another project? Or do you think this would satisfy the King of Filth? That might serve two purposes neatly in one go."

There are no traps on the door. It opens onto what seems to be a natural sinkhole that connects to an adjoining chamber. Twenty‐six human‐sized niches run the perimeter of this dark, sandstone chamber in thirteen stacked pairs, between defaced carvings of the sun and a winged, feminine form. Nineteen forms wrapped in muslin cloth sit quietly, largely faded and covered in dust, but one is wrapped in colorful fabric and less dusty than the others. A double door seals the passage to the west.

Three spectral figures manifest in the room. These ghostly crusaders float just above the ground, yet despite their phantomlike appearance, their armor and weapons seem quite solid.

Zileska, noting the undead threat, taps Zhi and says, "Fear not, I have your back."

Death ward - Zhi is now immune to negative energy damage.

Zhi looks at the spectres hanging in the air in front of her. "These seem like something that would be more your speed than mine," she says to Zileska.

Knowing that group will need all the help it can get, Zhi attempts to grant everyone the benefit of her spell of speed.

Defensive Casting - Haste - DC 21: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

She manages to avoid the phantom blades and still feels the surge of speed move through her.

I assume it's been long enough for Maria's barkskin to have worn off? It's got a 110 minute duration and she drank it before Mel teleported everyone in. If it's worn off (and I assume some of the other buffs that Zileska cast earlier have also worn off) then her AC is now 23 and there's no longer a miss chance.

And, because I forgot to mention it earlier, she's set the Crusader's Band to the Eye of Aroden for +2 on saving throws vs evil.

Maria had kept quiet at the revelation of the traitor, but the rest of the team would be able to tell that she was seething.

As they explored further and found the snake, she had to agree with Melodie's suggestion. "Well, an anaconda would fit the bill for what the King of Filth wanted in a guard animal, and it's readily-available for us, which would certainly save us time."

Further oh, as they encountered the spectres, Maria ran forward to engage them as Zhi's spell fell into place. Already examining how the creatures were moving, she struck out.

Sara kicks under of the spectral knights, slightly disrupting its incorporeal form. Maria steps up to stab that one as well, while Zileska wards Zhi against negative energy. Melodie blankets the spirits with glitterdust, blinding two of them, and Zhi hastens the party.

Sensings Zileska's connection with the divine, the spectres float up above the heads of the party's front line and attack the half-elf! Several of their hits connect, leaving Zileska battered and drained!

Zileska's healing spell has the opposite effect on the undead, greatly weakening the etheric bonds tying it to this world. After another assault by the cleric's companions, the shade is ripped apart, discorporating!

Searching the room reveals one of the bodies in the burial niches is noticeably newer than the others, and wrapped in an expensive curtain rather than a muslin burial shroud. In her pocket are identification papers for Tae Amalon, a scholar and tutor born in 4659 AR.

Heal DC 15:
This woman died around 30 years ago, rather than centuries earlier like the others in the chamber.

Heal or Perception DC 20:
There is a knife wound in her back, with the tip of the blade still lodged in her ribs. The blade tip seems to be from a dagger of excellent quality, with a distinctive curve, though identifying it is impossible without tracking down the rest of the dagger.

The door to the west here opens onto old tunnels that connect to the sewers. A well-trodden path seems to lead towards the Monastery of the Seven Forms of Sin.

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Take 10 on Perception.

"Look," Melodie says, pointing to the wound in the woman's back. "There's something in there!" She places a hand over the wound, a few inches from the flesh and the tip of a dagger blade slowly pulls itself free from the corpse and settles gently in her palm.

"This must be from the weapon that killed her. I wonder where the rest of it is?" Melodie muses, before something comes to her. "Wait! This is important! Jeroth's ledger said 'I have secured proof beneath my home, with the killing blow in the grubby mitts of the King of Filth'! That must be it! The item you were bargaining for. It's the rest of this - whatever that is!"

Game Concluded

"Fine, then lets rest up and then go talk to the King of Filth again. We still haven't decided, yet, whether we're going to try to find a way to meet his demands or just put him down." She glances back to the room with the giant snake. "I guess we could give him the snake, but that doesn't take care of setting up a big trap for him or getting him an expensive trophy."

She looks around the tomb.

"Anyone have any ideas for those? I can disarm any trap you want to come up with, but I'm no good at making them."

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

"We could just fake it." Melodie suggests. "You spend some time fiddling around with something. I'm sure Sara or I can be convincing and I can probably cast a spell on the sly - we could do a 'glitterdust trap' perhaps. We just need it to work long enough to get the dagger, if that really is what he has. Or we could try to pay him - you said he liked secrets? The things we've been finding out about Pythareus might well count."

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

"This woman's been dead for quite a while," notes Zileska laconically as she examines her nails.

Game Concluded

"Yeah, she has," Zhi says, agreeing with the priestess. "But why is she wrapped up differently than the others. What's different about her?"

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Zileska leans in to see if the corpse has enough of an intact head to be subject to speak with dead. "Well, my guess is that this was an easy way to dump her. Roll the body up in a carpet, drop off in the catacombs. If her face remains intact enough we can ask her tomorrow."

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

"This place looks like a crypt." Melodie adds. "The others were buried here deliberately but she was dumped? Either way we should get her out of here before those dead things come back!"

Game Concluded

"They'll come back?" Zhi says with surprise, looking at her wife. She then looks to Zileska for confirmation.

"Yeah, let's head back upstairs."

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

"Oh yeah," says Zileska, like this is something she sees every day. "This is a catacomb. Those bodies are really old. They're all buried in muslin. Probably just some squishy bones left - may even be the origin of those specters we dispersed. This one was left here probably because who'd go looking for a corpse in a catacomb? She was definitely murdered and most likely the murderer wrapped her in a thick rug because it's handy and then hauled the body down here and left it, oh... thirty years-ish ago."

FWIW I can hit Heal DC 20 without rollin'.

Tae Amalon's corpse is intact enough for speak with dead to work.

Once the ladies have made their way upstairs, Zhi takes a longer look around the mansion.

"Did you really put this place in my name?" she asks her wife.

She looks around the main living area as if considering something. "I wonder what we'll find to do until tomorrow?" She glances at Melodie. "Any ideas?" she asks with a completely innocent expression.

"The new owner is d'Valois Mai Zhi." Melodie responds with a soft smile. "Max and I divided up the other stuff a long time ago - I get the summerhouse so I thought perhaps we could live here in the future? Once everything's calmed down and we've cleaned it at least a dozen times..."

"I should show you around." She responds to her wife's question with an innocent face of her own. "We should probably choose a bedroom before the others do!" She takes Zhi's hand to lead her upstairs and straight to the master bedroom.

"Oh good - new sheets!" She says, taking in the room. "Apart from that no-ones been in since I was last here. That's good. We should keep this one, it's by far the biggest!"

She shoots a glance at the large four poster bed, and then back to her wife. "So..."

"So?" Zhi asks in response, her face a mask of innocence.

She puts her hands behind her back and walks around the room taking obvious care to avoid the changeling. She stops at a window and stares out into the city. She leans forward, her face almost touching the glass.

"It's all starting to sink in, Mel," she says after a moment. Her voice has lost its swagger and playfulness from before. "This will be ours." She turns to looks at her wife. There are tears brimming in her eyes. "I don't mean the house. But this life. A dry place to sleep. Warm food to eat every day. Clean sheets. A window to look out onto the city when it rains. Looking out on to clean streets and nice parks."

She smiles and wipes at the tears as they start to run down her cheeks.

"A safe place for our daughter to grow and play." Her hand moves down protectively to her belly. "She'll never have to know fear or hunger. She won't have to steal to eat."

The rogue looks down at her wet hands.

"I'm sorry. I don't know why everything seems to affect me so much. It's like I'm dreaming and every moment of it is the fear that I'm going to wake up and all of this ..." She gestures around herself. "... will be gone."

She takes a deep breath and settles herself. Her eyes change and darken. "I just have to ..." She unbuckles the belt holding her weapons and drops them to the floor. "... take advantage of it ..." She takes a step forward and pulls her tunic over her head - the tiny gold lock on her nipple glittering in the sunlight streaming in through the window. "... while it lasts." She reaches Melodie and pushes her back on to the bed. Her boots clunk to the floor and are followed by her breeches. Then she's climbing onto the bed over the top of the mesmerist. "Doesn't that sound like an appropriate response?" She captures her wife's lips with her own.

... aaannnnnddd they're occupied for the remainder of the evening. ;)

The next morning, Zileska casts her spell on Tae Amalon's corpse. The mouth falls open with a sepulchral sigh, ready to answer the priestess' questions.

Zhi stands nearby, curiously holding her hand over her nose as she waits for the body's answers to Zil's question.

Melodie is present as well, holding Zhi's hand in hers. The two seem extra close this morning...

The corpse answers:

* Who killed you? "I don't know."
* Why would someone kill you? "I.. I think there was an argument."
* Who were your enemies? "I don't know."
* What's the last thing you remember? "Looking into a teenage boy's eyes as I bled out on the floor."
* Who can we tell about your death? "I don't know."
* Is there something you'd like us to do for you? "Repair... the fracture."

Zileska has heard of a case like this before. Sometimes in the case of a particularly traumatic murder, the soul can be fractured, binding part of it to the body's earthly remains and part of it to the murder weapon. Finding the weapon might restore Tae Amalon's soul and allow her to provide you with more information.

"We definitely need to talk to the King of Filth again." Melodie concludes. "If he has the dagger then that's what we need to sort out what's going on here. Jeroth thought it was important, so we should probably find it out at the very least. So how are we going to deal with the King? I've got the snake we could give him as a pet, then we can likely bluff our way through a trap and simply purchase a scroll or two to make some sort of magical noise effect? I doubt stealing it would be easy but we could simply pay him for it? Especially if I go back as Jeroth and disclaim any more interest - that could drive the price down..." She shrugs, "You're the ones that have met him, which approach will have the most success?"
