DM Brainiac |

A long marble workbench runs the entire length of the southern wall, and a rusting metal shelf stands on the opposite wall. Squat stools line up along the bench, which is littered with a variety of small, precise hammers and chisels as well as fragments of crystalline stone that looks like quartz. Another door exits to the north.
A pair of skum poke about this room, inspecting the tools and bits of cut quartz. When they see you, though, they snarl and raise their tridents!
Gideon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Tobar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Weyve: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Skum: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Everybody can act before the skum. Map update to come in the next couple of hours.

Calvin Shoals |

If there's a straight line to one, Calvin will charge (like usual), but if not he'll use his move to get in range.
Calvin moves up to the closest of the two skum and tries to take them down quickly.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 1 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11

Tobar Iverrov |

Tobar follows along quietly; as soon as the skum are revealed, he wastes no time in bringing his crossbow to bear. He swears softly as Calvin charges into the confined area and makes it hard to get a clear shot.
Crossbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 7

Weyve Murkwater |

My bad, was thinking of the layout from memory, thought there were just the two rooms, left and right.
"Looks a little narrow in there! Calvin, can you fall back slowly?"
If you take a 5' step back after your next attack, and then the next, and the skum follows, then once he is out of the door we can gang up on him. If he makes it that far.
Weyve touches Tobar on the shoulder and his hand smokes with dark mist.
Casting guidance on Tobar.

DM Brainiac |

Tobar snaps off a shot, but his bolt shatters against the far wall. Weyve touches the crossbowman to grant him some guidance on his next attack.
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Gideon tries to grease the lead skum's trident, but it moves away before the spell can coat the weapon.
Calvin rushes in and stabs the skum with his blade, badly wounding it.
Snarling, the skum retaliates, but fails to hit. The second skum climbs up onto the workbench, kicking tools and quartz as it moves to stab at Calvin, but the gillman blocks the attack with his shield.
Trident, Claw, Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 81d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 131d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Trident (Higher Ground): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 1 = 15

Weyve Murkwater |

I'm going to delay to see if Calvin moves 5' back or not.
If he doesn't, I will move right in the room behind him. If he does, I can go to the square just south of Gideon.
Weyve concentrates, and murmurs some words in Aboleth. He steps up behind Calvin and touches him on the shoulder; smudges of black mist spurt out from under his fingertips where he lays his hand.
Casting guidance on Calvin.
"Give 'em hell, Cal."

Calvin Shoals |

Calvin doesn't like either ignoring his allies or being outnumbered, so he will try to finish off the injured Skum before backing up 5 feet.
Power Attac: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 8 - 1 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 = 8

Tobar Iverrov |

Crossbow attack, point-blank, guidance, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 22
Crossbow damage, point-blank: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Tobar snaps off another shot at the closest of the skum, and this time manages to land a bolt right past the bobbing and weaving of the melee.

Weyve Murkwater |

I moved Calvin's token back 5' and Weyve's token up south of Gideon.

DM Brainiac |

Tobar shoots the wounded skum with an accurate bolt to the chest!
Gideon waits a moment while Calvin slashes wildly at the injured skum. The creature parries his strike with its trident, so the gillman backs up a few steps.
As Weyve grants Calvin guidance, Gideon takes his shot, firing past his fighter friend. He hits, and the skum falls!
Shortbow, Point Blank, Past Cover: 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 5 + 1 - 4 = 141d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
The remaining skum steps forward and attacks Calvin again from higher ground. This time, it lands a solid hit, the tines of its trident stabbing into Calvin's chest.
Full Attack, Higher Ground: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 251d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 1 = 121d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 2 + 1 = 19
Crit Confirm?: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 = 11
Trident Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
8 damage to Calvin.

Weyve Murkwater |

Weyve presses his hand against Calvin's back and let's healing energy flow through his hand.
cure light wounds: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
"One down, and one to go! Keep it up, Calvin!"

Gideon Ross |

I'm going to delay my move until Cal's turn; Cal, would you mind taking a five-foot to the side so that I can five-foot into your present square? Then we could both hit the skum, if your next attack doesn't bring it down.
Gideon takes a quick step forward to back up his friend after the trident scored a successful strike, using his machete to swing at the skum's legs.
Machete Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Machete Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Current HP: 16/19

Calvin Shoals |

Calvin hops onto the side table to allow Gideon to come up and aid in taking down the creature and presses the attack.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 8 - 1 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 = 12
But his attack goes wide.

DM Brainiac |

Tobar's next shot clatters harmlessly against the workbench. Weyve heals Calvin, then the fighter hops up on the workbench and slashes at the skum again. It knocks his blade aside with its trident. Gideon moves in and chops into the monster's thigh with his machete.
Snarling at the bard, the skum shifts its focus to him, taking advantage of the high ground. The bard catches its tines on his buckler then steps back to dodge its teeth and claw.
Full Attack, Higher Ground: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 1 = 171d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 1 = 131d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7

Calvin Shoals |

For after Weyve goes.
Calvin sweeps low and cuts up, using his shield to jockey the trident out of the way.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 1 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 = 12

Weyve Murkwater |

Weyve places his hand on Calvin's back again. "Fortune to you," he says.
Casting guidance again.

DM Brainiac |

Tobar fires another bolt that whizzes past the skum. Weyve grants Calvin guidance, helping steer his sword into the fishy creature's gut. Gideon tries to finish off the badly wounded skum, but his swing goes wide.
The monster turns its attention back to Calvin, but the gillman blocks all of its attacks.
Full Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 71d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 81d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Calvin Shoals |

"Oh hey, a burning rock thingy." Calvin says rather plainly as he catches his breath. "That's neat."

Weyve Murkwater |

"What?" he asks. "Looks like it could just be thrown or something... I guess."
"Hah, no, no. Watch."
Weyve picks up the Ioun torch and holds it next to Calvins head. When he lets go it begins spinning lazily around Calvin.
"See? It floats in the air. It will stay close to you until you grab it and put it away."
Are the Tridents magical?
Weyve looks around the room.
"Let's keep going. We can see where this leads," he says, pointing to the other door.
He quietly steps up to the door and listens, then if he thinks it is safe he opens the door.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

DM Brainiac |

These tridents are mundane.
Weyve does not hear any sounds, so he opens the door. This dark chamber is featureless except for a large ring of an unusual-looking metal embedded in the floor. Studying it for a short time, the oracle determines that anything within the circle will be subjected to a detect magic effect, but the results of this effect are visible in the form of colored auras of differing intensities.
If a creature focuses its attention on a subject for multiple rounds, the information received becomes clearer, as if the observer had studied the creature or object with detect magic for multiple rounds. No concentration is required to maintain this effect, and the observer is able to cast other spells while continuing to observe. Not every creature is able to understand the information it’s seeing through this effect. Creatures unable to cast detect magic require 3 ranks in Spellcraft to properly interpret the auras they're seeing.

Weyve Murkwater |

"This could be useful if we find something we cannot identify," says Weyve. "Even Calvin or Tobar could tell if something was magical by putting it in there."
"Too bad we can't take it with us. Let's keep going."
Up the ramp, I suppose.

DM Brainiac |

The ramp winds up to the next floor. Much of this level is a room that wraps around the tower. Another ramp on the south wall ascends to the floor above. Against a wall to the southwest is a table suitable for quiet study. The western side of this area sports half a dozen bookshelves covered in the dust of deteriorating paper and leather. Opposite the shelves is a small stone plinth holding a clockwork bust of a nondescript woman. A large table surrounded by a few stools occupies the eastern side of the room.
A single skum stands among the shelves, examining some of the surviving tomes. When it sees you, though, it hefts its glaive and moves in on you menacingly!
Gideon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Tobar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Weyve: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Urlgryber: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Everybody can act before the skum. Map updated.

Calvin Shoals |

Calvin sees the threat and charges it, his longsword gleaming with light as he drives it towards his enemies heart!
"Hyah!" he cries out triumphantly.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 8 - 1 = 26
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 1 = 27
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 = 14
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 = 13
Crit! Crit! Crit! Note that I didn't actually use the charge action. Total damage=27!

DM Brainiac |

AoO (Combat Reflexes): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
As Calvin charges in, the skum responds with amazing reflexes. The gillman barely manages to deflect the saw-toothed glaive with his shield--if he had charged recklessly, it definitely would have hit him!
Good thing you didn't actually charge! Everybody else is up.

Weyve Murkwater |

Good thing you didn't actually charge! Everybody else is up.
So the gillman has something that prevents him from being flat-footed? Good thing we don't have a rogue!
Weyve begins to concentrate, mouthing words that can barely be heard. Black fog begins to pour from his mouth and nose, and his skin grows faintly darker.
Begin casting summon monster I.

Calvin Shoals |

In my defense, if I go before him in the first round of combat he's still considered flat-footed and can't make AoO's.

Gideon Ross |

Gideon moves forward after Calvin, swinging his machete at the gillman in the hope of finishing the skum off before it can take another swing.
Machete Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Machete Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Man, I hope I get all these low rolls out of the way so that I'll do alright in the next big fight.

Tobar Iverrov |

Tobar wastes no time in taking a shot at the latest threat - presumably a bit more dangerous than some of its predecessors. Though maybe not!
Crossbow attack, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 23
Confirm crit, point-blank, past cover: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 7
Crossbow damage, point-blank: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Calvin Shoals |

Calvin steps into the Skum's reach again, "Flank him! Don't give him space to use that glaive!" he shouts, slicing at the creature's abdomen.
Hope your summon can flank with me or Gideon!
Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 1 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 = 9

Weyve Murkwater |

Weyve edges forwards, and completes his spell.
5' step.
A silver eagle appears in midair and attacks!

Summoned Critter |

I placed the eagle flanking with Gideon because I don't think I can see the square that flanks with Calvin from where I am. This appears he can appear above the bookcase or in the space with it (it is a small creature).
"Skreeeeeeeeeeeee!"
With a screech the eagle attacks!
Full attack and using Smite Evil.
Talon 1 +2 Flank: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 2 = 14
Talon 2 +2 Flank: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 20

damage beak +1 Smite: 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6
Fly DC 15 to hover: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
After the attack the Eagle lands on the bookshelf.

Weyve Murkwater |

Satisfied that the eagle is doing its job, Weyve takes a shot at the Skum with his crossbow, but the shot lodges in the wall. Weyve quickly reloads.
Crossbow -8 cover, in melee: 1d20 + 4 - 8 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 8 = 6

Gideon Ross |

The archaeologist strikes out at the skum, taking advantage of the flanking position offered by the eagle.
Machete Attack+Flank: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 2 = 18
Machete Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
He then takes a quick step to the side, trying to restrict the skum's movement options.

DM Brainiac |

Weyve's summoned eagle appears with a screech, raking the skum with a talon and pecking it with its beak. The gillman's crossbow bolt goes wide, as does Tobar's shot. Calvin and Gideon both manage to hit though, slicing deep gouges in the aquatic monster's side.
The skum changes targets, biting at Gideon before stepping back to slice with its glaive. While the bard dodges its teeth, he is too slow to avoid getting sliced by the glaive, the saw-toothed weapon slicing deep into his chest and badly wounding him!
Bite, Glaive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 151d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
