Just in case some were wondering... no, I didn't forget that both Kagak and Patrol Sergeant Frum went before Rohan. I wanted Rohan to go before I posted because I wanted to take care of the remaining NPC actions in one post.

Kagak
The orc skald's life was ebbing away, though it struggled to hold on to what little remained. However, the severity of the wounds dealt to Kagak were making that an unlikely proposition...

Kagak's Constitution check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15; -14 penalty (-11 due to his negative hit point total on top of his -3 for being in the Critical wound threshold, for a total penalty of -14). This brings Kagak's total of 15 down to 1. As he needed to beat a DC of 10, the orc skald fails this check and has bled out. Kagak is dead and will be removed from the initiative order.

Both the orc closest to the skald and the half-drow Nyym heard the last breath of life issue forth from Kagak's mouth in a gurgle. The orc hero was no more.

Omast Frum
The patrol sergeant spared only the slightest of glances at the shieldbreakers that surrounded him. The veteran knew that he couldn't forget about the captain that challenged him, and so turned his undivided attention to the real threat at hand. He hoped that that tremor in hands he had experienced earlier wouldn't return during this fight.

Omast Frum's Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19; -2 due to Power Attack
greatsword damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11; +6 damage due to Power Attack

Sergeant Frum put aside that worry as he brought his weapon up behind him before stepping forward, bringing the blade around in an overhead swing that started high left and ended low right. The move, though a simple one, was amplified by velocity generated by the patrol sergeant's need to end the duel quickly. The shieldbreaker captain brought up his shotel, thinking to use the weapon's curved double-edged to catch Frum's sword and put him at a disadvantage.

However, the orc captain did not anticipate the power behind the patrol sergeant's two-handed swing, power that proved too much for the shotel to withstand and causing it to shatter beneath it. Frum's blade continued its descent unhindered, catching the astonished orc with a diagonal slice on its right shoulder down to its left side and leaving a grievous wound in the blade's wake.

Rohan
Rohan could see that some assistance was needed to help Kyt and the man who had entered the combat in aid their team. He jumped over the barricade with a quick motion to get closer to the people attacking Nogusta, the new arrival. The jump was quick and not flashy, an action to close ground in an effort improve some of his attacks and hit more then one.

Acrobatics to leap and tumble over the defense wall: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Once over the wall, Rohan quickly got into position and summoned up 3 rocks from the ground that darted forward like little missiles through the air toward the intended orcs.

Onslaught Blast: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 1 = 26 "Grazed penalty of -1"
Shieldbreaker Orc 1 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Shieldbreaker Orc 2 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Kagak Squad Orc Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The first orc hit, one of the shieldbreakers, reeled, while the second, also a shieldbreaker, nearly crumpled under Rohan's attack. The third and final orc, the last of Kagak's squad remaining on the ground, was blasted back into the base of the tower before folding to the ground where it lay unmoving.

Twisted Heart Shieldbreakers
Despite Rohan's attack upon them, none of the orc shieldbreaker moved from they had posted themselves around the duel between their captain and human warrior.

Within the ring, the orc captain called for a new shotel from one of its men, who quickly surrendered the desired weapon so that their leader could take down the human soldier. Not wasting any time, the newly armed captain launched a cross-cut at the patrol sergeant.

Shieldbreaker Captain Shotel Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24; -2 due to Wounded penalty
Shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Frum barely managed to block the swing with his own blade, but the tip of the curved weapon still managed to catch the sergeant across the back of his hand. Though he wore leather gloves, the sharp edge of the shotel still managed to leave a nasty gash. A quick glance told the veteran told him that it wouldn't hamper him, at least not at that moment. But if he didn't end the fight soon, the bleeding wound would prove to be a hindrance.

Kagak's Orc Squad-Mates
The lone survivor of Kagak's squad that had gone down to the battlefield made its way up the tower's staircase, fear of the Erutaki warrior hastening its movements. When it reached the top where its leader was, the orc was greeted with the sight of another battle taking place...

The orc closest to Nyym slid the sword from its sheath and launched an attack, overcome by the loss of Kagak.

Kagak Squad-Mate Falchion attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22; -3 penalty due to Critical wound threshold.
falchion damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9

Through sheer desperation born of loyalty to the skald, the squad-member scored a hit on the half-drow.

Nyym's damage from the orc's strike puts his hit point total at 16 and leaves him in the Grazed wound threshold, and as such, he takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level. In addition, because of the hit, Nyym must also take a move action to make a DC 15 Acrobatics check so that he can still hover. Otherwise, he will either be forced to land or take at least 10 feet of movement to remain in the air.

The other orc, bolstered by the arrival of another of its squad-mates, launched another javelin at Nyym.

Kagak Squad-Mate javelin attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
javelin damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The orc's exuberance caused it to overthrow the missile weapon, the javelin veering wide of its mark.

And so ends Round 8. The initiative order has been updated, and the map will soon follow. In the meantime, Round 9 begins now. Mesa also has 3 rounds of bardic performance left once her turn in the initiative order comes up. Nyym, you're up!

The lightning kunai thrown by Nyym caught his target full in the chest. The half-drow watched as his opponent's breath became a labored wheeze moments before the orc collapsed, its muscles contracting one final time before relaxing in death.

Nyym's perception check: 1d20 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 1 = 16
Nyym is currently aware of the presence of the newly arrived member of Kagak's squad on the tower. However, the half-drow is still unaware of the monitor lizard's presence on the side of tower. Speaking of which...

Twisted Heart Monitor Lizard
Monitor Lizard Athletics check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Once again, the lizard's powerful limbs strained with effort, as it continued the climb to top. Its talons sought purchase where possible, but in the end, the reptile was not able to advance from its current position on the side of the tower. Since the lizard did not match the DC 20 it needed to continue climbing, but it failed by less than 5, it is unable to move from its current spot on the side of the tower.

Kyt
Thanks to the efforts of both Mesa and the new arrival Nogusta, the elven monk could feel strength surging in her limbs, coursing through her body. Gripping her sword, Kyt slowly rose to her feet and began to assess the situation about her. Rising from her prone state is the only action that Kyt can take this round.

Since Kyt can only get up this round, it looks like Minkai bard, Mesa, is next to act.

“Okay I am waaaay too close to this nonsense.” Mesa grumbled to herself as the troll roared up towards her position, thankfully the Barbarian was the intended target.

The Tien-min woman's eyes shifted around her as she continued to add her music to the ridiculously loud din of battle, some how not only making the tune heard, but bringing the crash of weapons and yelling into the blend of music. Still perhaps it might be time to fine something other than wings with all these new targets entering the field, though her companions seemed to be enjoying the mobility a might bit to much to stop just yet. Still she could add to this insanity before seeking cover again.

Stepping over the monk as she was trying to get up Mesa let loose with magic, the crackling of shards of the words adding to the chaotic mix of her song.

"I am the one, the only one, I am the god of kingdom come"

The words crystallized in the air before her bursting out into a cone of jagged air ripping into the two orcs to the north and north east of the captain and to the troll before Liesel-Marie.

Though the player didn't really indicate it with the post, Mesa did in fact take a free action to maintain her bardic performance. So the wings are still present for another round. Also, I forgot that to apply the effects of the Aetheric Revitalization when I previously posted how many rounds of performance Mesa has remaining, which should be 9, not 3. That number drops to 8 on round 10.

Also note that the initiative order has been updated. Gharr is in her proper place, going before Liesel-Marie, and Aodhán's has been adjusted to take into account what happened to him while he was unconscious (more on that when his turn comes up).

In the meantime, on with the round...

Mesa
Stepping over the monk as she was trying to get up, the Minkai bard let loose with magic adding to the chaotic mix of her song.

I am the one, the only one! I am the god of kingdom come!

The words struck a chord, crystallizing in the air before bursting out into a cone and transforming into a shower of razor sharp shards that ripped into three orcs and the troll before Liesel-Marie.

Shieldbreaker 1 Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Shieldbreaker 2 Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Shieldbreaker 3 Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Gharr Reflex save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The three orc shieldbreakers moved their arms frantically as they used their shotels to cut down the crystalline shards, the contact of the metal blades creating a kind of music of their own. Gharr, caught off-guard by the sudden manifestation of magic, was unable to avoid being caught as the shards ripped and sliced her skin.

Now... I know that Mesa's player is wondering how his character was able to catch that extra orc within the spell effect. Well, I used a 15-ft cone template on the map to determine the area affected by chord of shards. This did necessitate moving Mesa closer to LM, but I figured that if you were trying to maximize the effectiveness of the spell, that would be worth the risk.

And with that in mind, Gharr has taken 11 points of damage from Mesa's spell chord of shards. Nogusta, you're up....

Nogusta considered his options. Any spell he cast would leave him open to attack from the nearby orcs. Channeling the power of Sarenrae might heal the attackers, it was too indiscriminate, and there were just too many orcs.
For Sarenrae!
The cleric's scimitar added a ringing note to the song over the battlefield as it cleared Nogusta's scabbard and slashed across the body of the nearest orc attacker.

Ouch. So Gharr will get two rounds of attacks on Liesel-Marie before the Erutaki can react to her presence. That's unfortunate, but I do have a useful action to take before she goes.

With a snarl as she recognizes the troll and remembers how her brother died - and perhaps surprising the new fellow - Liesel-Marie's form is suddenly wreathed in flames. "Come then, sister. Let's play a game."

Taking an immediate action to activate my oft-forgotten elemental defense. Attackers using natural attacks or unarmed strikes take a point of fire damage.

Actually... no, Gharr will only get one round of attacks, that being this round. Again, I only had her attack when she did last round because of when she got introduced, and how that introduction came about (to make up for addition of the orc beast-tamer when I as DM only had so many of that unit available for use). Once the troll takes her action, Liesel-Marie will be able to act when she's supposed to this round. Hopefully, that clears up any confusion you might have had.

The combination of Mesa's spell and the Mwangi's bladework proved too much for Nogusta's foe to handle as it crumpled under the cross-slash of the gleaming scimitar.

Annoyed by the crystallized shards that had perforated her flesh, Gharr unleashed an angry roar as she took her frustration out on the nearby Liesel-Marie.

The enraged troll lashed out with one claw swipe, which the Erutaki avoided with ease. Fueling her anger even more, Gharr went to attempt a second strike, oblivious to the fact that her foe was now sheathed in flames until she had made contact. And though the damage to the troll's hand was minor in comparison to the crimson lines left on Liesel-Marie's flesh, Gharr's eyes somewhat widened in alarm, her nostrils crinkling at the smell that lingered in the air.

Gharr's claw damage places Liesel-Marie at 18 hit points. This leaves her at the Grazed wound threshold, and as such, she still only takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level. The troll, on the other hand, takes 1 point of fire damage from the Erutaki Warrior Princess's searing flesh elemental defense.

Next up is Liesel-Marie, who still gets to go because activating her elemental defense was an immediate action, which is eseentially a swift action that can be done when it's not her turn. This does mean that she can't perform any action that might require her to use a swift action until her turn next round.

Fun fact... Being Zenj, Nogusta would know Gharr as being a jeburo, which is what flood trolls are called using Polyglot in the Mwangi Expanse. With a flourish, Liesel-Marie spun her bearded axe in a figure-eight pattern that ended with an upward diagonal slash from Gharr's left hip up to the troll's right shoulder that sent black ichor flying in a wide arc.

Gharr's eyes widened even more from shock at the human's powerful swing before going blank as she crashed heavily to the ground in a pool of her own blood. Moments later, the first drops of rain began to fall on the the battle-torn square, almost as though the heavens were weeping tears of joy.

And with that shot from LM, Gharr is down. Next round, she gets to make a Constitution check to see if her bleeding stops, much in the same way that Kyt did (though I don't always use it, named NPCs do get to have that privilege just like PCs do).

Next post will deal with both Aodhán and Patrol Sergeant and will probably be up on Monday, my next day off.

Earlier in the night...

Battle Music Transition: Whatever - Our Lady Peace

The orc's straight-forward slice was narrowly avoided by Rohan. As he recovered from the attack, the human caught sight of a woman wearing a black mourning dress standing where the orc had been moments before. She seemed to shudder as a pale blue fire limned her form. Moments later, the space she had occupied erupted with a pale aetheric energy that rushed rapidly across the square.

Even as their bodies were suffused with the fiery blue energy that had erupted from the possessed orc, the minds of the members of Team Ruby became inundated with images. The unceasing stream of information pouring into them proved to be more they could handle as one by one each person's mind began to break down, seeing themselves seemingly immersed in an unending sea of shadowy faces and umbral limbs like drowning people momentarily attempting to surface before being pulled down by others. As the prehensile extremities began to latch on to each member of Team Ruby, darkness began to seep within, tainting them as it began to envelop them individually, snuffing out whatever light they each possessed.

Electricity began to arc out from all around Nyym, the blue-white discharges of energy both repelling and disintegrating the appendages that sought to consume him.

A dome of white flame moved sluggishly away from the Erutaki Warrior Princess (tm). But though the fire itself seemed to creep along, its effects were no less devastating than those produced by her half-drow companion.

Shards of earth and stone radiated away from Rohan in an outburst of power, with the larger pieces of elemental matter leveling and flattening any limbs they came into contact with while the smaller ones ripped through them like bullets.

A layer of indigo, wispy energy in the form of a lean vulpine-like creature with nine long sweeping tails that lashed out in an unruly and vicious manner from Mesa, attacking anything within reach that moved indiscriminately.

Kyt stood in meditative repose as an enormous cloud of water vapor seeped from her body, freezing any limbs that grasped at her.

But though the aetheric energy sought to destroy their psyches, it also seemed to have a rejuvenating effect on their physical selves...

The youthful high priestess of Sanctuary Tyari felt the prickling of her skin moments before the blue crystal pendant that she had been entrusted with by Kyt popped into a glittering powdery cloud.

As she stared at Brantos in confusion, in the temple's basement, Aodhán's eyes snapped open. He sat up from where he had been lying mere moments before and stared about in confusion. This was not his room at Ramblehouse.

Sweet Barleybrew, the Chelish bouncer exclaimed. Where am I? And where are the others? That thing... did it kill them?

He made it to his feet and stumbled toward the door, which he opened, and began the ascent up the stairs to the nave of the temple. I'm in Sanctuary? Then I did die...

So lost was Aodhán in his thoughts that he did not notice the presence of Brantos and Tyari, who had begun to approach him. But before they could reach the young man, Aodhán ran for the double doors (all three sets), and down the stairs outside. He did not stop until he had crossed the street and made it back to the boarding house, which he entered and discovered was empty. Nonplussed by this, the Chelish man climbed the stairs to the upper floor and made his way back to his room. As he reached for the handle, the door swung open.

Some time later, Aodhán had left Ramblehouse and was standing outside, only really at that moment taking in what was going on around him. Buildings were burning, dead bodies lay in the streets, and, to his horror, he saw orcs running around killing and looting indiscriminately.

The sight of it filled the bouncer with a deeply-seeded anger. He strapped on his caestūs and, after taking a few test swings to reacquaint himself with their weight, began to creep around back of the building.

Aodhán's Stealth check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Once behind the boarding house, Aodhán began to think on Trunau's protocol for orc attacks. He remembered that most of the civilians would make their way to the Longhouse, which was in the Upper Quarter. It was also a rallying point for the town militia, of which he was a member of.

So I guess that means it's off to the Longhouse for me then.

Aodhán looked around furtively, then made his way to the base of the tower near the Ramblehouse and followed the length of the wall until he came upon a much bigger problem.

Once he reached the gate that separated the upper and lower portions of Trunau, the source of the constant banging that the bouncer was hearing, which had been getting louder, was made obvious to him. Aodhán swore quietly under his breath upon seeing not only the gathering of orcs but the cave giant trying to break down the portcullis.

But of course it couldn't be easy for me to get in. What was I thinking, thinking I could just stroll right on in...

Discouraged, but undaunted, Aodhán backtracked along the wall to the north tower and began the process of climbing.

Aodhán takes 10, giving himself a 12. The DC he needs to beat is 15, however he is using the corner provided by the tower and the wall to make his climb somewhat easier. This reduces the DC by 5 to 10, allowing him to slowly but surely make his way up.

Upon making it to the top, Aodhán sought out the door and made his way down the stairs to the inner quarter just in time to note a momentary brilliant flash as a shaft of light broke through the dark clouds overhead, illuminating the area south of his location. Curiosity overriding his caution, the bouncer crept forward...

...and found his friends engaged in a life or death struggle against the orcs trying to to gain entry to the inner quarter.

Now....

A chaotic mix of emotions surged through Aodhán's being, ranging from relief to happiness to anger. Seeing that he was needed here, the bouncer ran forward to help, passing Liesel-Marie (and stepping over the prone form of the troll in the process) to engage one of the shieldbreaker orcs.

Aodhán attempts an Acrobatics check to tumble in to avoid an attack of opportunity from one of the other shieldbreaker orcs nearby.

Character Theme: Highly Suspect - My Name Is Human

Aodhán's Acrobatics check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

The DC to match or beat was 17, which he failed to do. Aodhán, therefore, provokes an attack of opportunity from the orc next to his target.

Shieldbreaker Orc 4 Attack of Opportunity w/shotel: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

As the Chelish bouncer came running up, one of the shieldbreaker orcs took note and sought to bring him down with its weapon. But Aodhán had taken this possibility into account as he threw himself forward into a diving roll that brought him under the seemingly slow-moving orc's cross-swing. Without pausing, the bouncer sprang to his feet and, in the same motion, launched an uppercut at his intended target.

Aodhán's caestūs attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13; +1 due to theme song
caestūs damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The orc backed up a step from where it had been standing as it was rocked by the punch delivered by a newly arrived human that now stood before it, hands up in an unusual fighting stance.

Omast Frum
The patrol sergeant, seeing the ring of orcs that had him surrounded were under attack, focused everything he had in his next swing, intent on bringing down the shieldbreaker captain.

Omast Frum's greatsword attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28; -2 due to Power Attack
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
greatsword damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 3) + 4 = 8; +6 due to Power Attack, plus an additional +6 due to confirming the critical

Frum shifted his grip on the handle of his sword as he brought the weapon up from the mid-guard to perform a full powered overhead swing that ended in the low guard position, blade pointing down in line with his lead foot.

The shieldbreaker captain stared at the patrol sergeant, a flicker of uncertainty crossing its face before realization dawned. And in that moment, the upper portion of its body shifted, then slid along the diagonal path made by Omast Frum's blade to the ground.

With Aodhán's arrival onto the field of battle and the playing of his theme song, all PCs gain a +1 bonus to any d20 roll made before the beginning of his turn next round. Next up is Rohan....

Rohan
Rohan gathered his thoughts and processed what was going on with a quick check of the surroundings. Quicky looking at the orcs that were surrounding Frum, he decided to help him out by evening the odds out some. Rohan pulled his coat to the side and stared the shieldbreakers down, pulling his arms back and summoning forth two stone arrowheads and launched them up, then accelerated quickly back down at an angle to target just a few that were already weakened.

Two of the shieldbreaker orcs took massive damage, with one nearly split in twain from the resultant hit.

You don't stand a chance against me. His thoughts lingered in his head, words that he did not utter aloud as he stood with an imperious gaze that would frighten most mortals.

Shieldbreaker Orc 7 is definitely deceased, while orc 8 still clings desperately to life.

Twisted Heart Shieldbreakers
The few shieldbreaker orcs that were witnesses to the the duel between their captain and the patrol sergeant could only watch in abject shock as their leader fell to the ground in two pieces. Though they had been ordered not to interfere, that command was no longer one that they could could continue to follow. The honor of their squad would be called into question.

Three of the contingent moved to attack the human, each hoping to be the one that avenge the loss of their leader. Each hoping to use the patrol sergeant's death to gain the role of leader of the shieldbreakers.

shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

The wiley human, sensing the imminent threat to his life, put his greatsword into motion, his arms using the length of the weapon to serve as a shield. The tip of his blade described a figure-eight pattern as it took the brunt of the first attack, a pilum hurled with all the strength the orc could muster. It sent a massive shock through his limbs, but the patrol sergeant knew that he could not afford to falter as he turned to meet the second attacker head-on, bringing his weapon around to knock aside this orc's shotel.

In the end, however, Frum's wounds from his previous battles proved to be the factor that kept him from reacting quick enough to prevent a third shieldbreaker from exploiting his diverted attention, catching the human in the side with a blow that nearly caused the patrol sergeant's eyes water, so intense was the pain.

Patrol Sergeant Omast Frum hawked, then spat once again, this time right into the face of the second shieldbreaker that attacked before yelling, Is that all ya got!?

But Frum that in spite of his bravado, he was hurt, and hurt bad. Another blow like that one would be the end of him for sure...

Patrol Sergeant Frum has taken 16 points of damage, dropping him down to 7 hp.

Meanwhile, as the patrol sergeant showed his defiance, Aodhán was attempting to fend off the assault of the remaining shieldbreakers. The first, having been punched in the mouth by the Chelish bouncer already, sought to repay him in kind with a swing from his own weapon with his companion following suit.

Shieldbreaker Orc 4 shotel attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10; -1 due to wound threshold
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Shieldbreaker Orc 5 shotel attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Dealing with more than one opponent at a time was nothing new to Aodhán has he frustrated their attacks through the use of head-bobs, deft weaves, and uncanny footwork that saw him through their combined assault even as he looked to set one of them up for his next strike.

That left one other member of the shieldbreaker squad. Not at all thrilled to have been attacked from a far by the cowardly (in its eyes) human, the orc readied its shotel as it moved cautiously away from the patrol sergeant and straight toward Rohan.

Kagak's Orc Squad-Mates
Up on the tower, the two remaining members of Kagak's squad decided to rush the hovering Nyym before the half-drow could go back on the offensive. The fresher one of the two drew out the big axe it carried before pushing the other, still shaky from what it had witnessed below on the ground, forward before following its comrade as well.

Orc Squad-Mate 2 falchion swing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16; -2 due to fear condition
falchion damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 = 7
Orc Squad-Mate 1 greataxe swing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
critical confirmation roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
greataxe damage: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10; +12 damage due to critical

The half-drow smiled as he used his wings to stay just out of reach of the fearful orc. However, that smirk was replaced with a look of surprise followed by a pained grimace as the second orc, who had purposefully kept itself back to find an opening in Nyym's defenses, took advantage of the timing of the half-drow's wings to break right and attack from the side. The sharpened edge of the axe tore through the delicate pinion even as it shielded Nyym in a way that a true flesh and blood one never could from the full brunt of the weapon's force.

Nyym was left a stump of a wing, leaving him alive but unable to fly anymore.

Nyym is currently at 4 hp, putting him at the Critical wound threshold, and as such, he takes a -3 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level. By all rights, however, he should be at -6. But I mistakenly informed him on Messenger(tm) that he had 26 hp left rather than the 16 hp he actually had remaining. So, to make up the difference, I applied 6 points of damage from the orc's attack to the wings created by Mesa's performance. This leaves him unable to use them for the remainder of this combat.

This brings an end to round 9. Round 10 starts now, with things starting to go sideways for Team Ruby (even with the respective arrivals of Nogusta and Aodhán), as the orcs on the field begin to push back against them. And with the bulk of the invading orcs poised to enter at any moment, the question still remains... can the team continue to hold out long enough for the arrival of Trunau's militia, or will they be the stepping stone that enables General Kelseph to sack the town?

No pressure guys... ;)

Nyym, you're up!

Kyt
Not sure what to make of the current situation unfolding around her, the elf's eyes went wide at the sight of Aodhán joining the fray. A look of shock was replaced by one of happiness only to disappear as her brow furrowed determinedly.

One thing at a time, Kyt reminded herself. Her obvious questions could wait. She had to deal with the moment at hand. And that meant clearing the square of this orc trash.

Raising her sword, Kyt stepped back into the fray and, in doing so, back into The Moment.

Her jubilation at the return of Aodhán threw off her initial attempt to strike down one of the orcs attacking the patrol sergeant and forced Kyt to quickly refocus her efforts. She continued her attack, her blade weaving an intricate pattern in the air as the elf came at the shieldbreaker from too many angles for it to properly defend against. The assault ended with her temple sword performing a high cross-cut that cleanly separated the orc's head from its shoulders.

Nogusta, if you are going to cast that next to a hostile orc, he's probably going to try to take your head off. Do you have an ability that allows you to avoid the attack of opportunity there? If not, I was going to suggest that you delay your action until an opportunity presents itself. I'm hopeful that Liesel-Marie will continue to cut a swath through the horde and could attempt to clear a path for you.

I forgot to remove the orc that Kyt killed as well as moving her up into position to do so when I updated the map. This will be rectified with my next post. Nogusta acted based on what I had originally posted, so he's in no danger of having his spell disrupted.

Rohan watched as things started to escalate into a tougher battle where we needed to win or lose, by lose he meant to get the heck out of dodge. Sadly Rohan noble self had very little plans to leave the combat, he knew when things were out of control that it time to leave but he was much like Liesel as to not want to back down from a fight.

"Surely Liesel knew when it was time to leave, but I will stand and fight till I can no longer. Wait...Has the tides turn or do we still have a chance?"

Rohan was filled with uncertainty and wanted to make amends to the situation if needed be. He believed that he could still win the fight. Eager to get a move on and take out these few remaining Orcs, he called out to the team more in a rally.

"We got this guys, we shall not let our hearts be overwhelmed by these pathetic creatures who think of themselves as soldiers. We will fight on, we will not surrender, we will slaughter them all if it comes to that."

At this point Rohan was just carringing his voice to inspire courage in himself, but hope that others will follow.

His eyes closed in on the Orc who was approaching him and thought to himself after the speech.

"Oh little one you have made a grave mistake approaching me."

Character Theme: Highly Suspect - My Name Is Human

Nogusta
A concerned expression crossed Nogusta's face as it appeared the tide was turning against the defenders. He looked over at the surrounded guard captain and his wounds. The cleric saw a clear path and stepped around to where he could lay his hand upon Frum. With a prayer to Sarenrae, his hands started to glow with a yellow light and he touched the guard captain.

The glow passed from the cleric's hands to Frum, basking him in the warm glow of the sun.

Gharr
The troll lay still upon the ground, her chest rising and falling the only indication that she still lived. Gharr could smell the alcohol being splashed all over her, but she was unconcerned about that. Instead, the troll only focused on the cool rain that was falling on her.

Gharr's Constitution check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14; -3 due to being at the Critical wound threshold. This means that the troll will need at least a 10 on the die to meet the DC of 10 required (10 + 3 from her Con modifier to make 13, then taking the -3 penalty to bring it down to the 10 necessary to pass)...
...which she got. Gharr's bleeding stops and she is conscious. She is still in the Critical threshold, but now is no longer Disabled, though Gharr is still Staggered (may take a single move action or standard action each round but not both [nor can she take full-round actions], and can take free, swift, and immediate actions).

As the rain continued to fall upon her, she knew had nothing to fear. Gharr remained where she lay, a smile beginning to play across the troll's bestial features. She could feel her skin absorbing the precipitation, and as it did, her injuries began to slowly knit themselves back together. It would take time to fully recover, and the troll had been in enough battles to know that the human woman would make that a difficult prospect at best.

But that didn't matter to Gharr. Only the next six seconds did. That was how long she needed to endure any punishment that the axe-wielding woman could dish out.

After that, the rest would take care of itself.

Just a reminder that rain reduces visibility ranges by half, resulting in a –4 penalty on Perception checks. It also automatically extinguishes any unprotected flames and causes protected flames (such as those of lanterns) to dance wildly with a 50% chance of extinguishing these lights. Liesel-Marie's searing flesh defense is not directly affected by this, but any flame she would create as a by-product of it would be. The larger green flames created by the alchemical mixture used by the orcs are also unaffected by this as well.

Liesel-Marie, you're up!

Frowning at the water beading on the troll's body and recognizing that setting her ablaze would likely not work as she'd hoped, Liesel-Marie knows she must press ahead.

She takes a half-step back from the fallen giant-kin and sweeps the bearded axe in a massive overhand chop, seeking to split the monster in twain. The 'move' is fluff. She should remain in the square shown on the

If Gharr is helpless, there will be no mercy shown and Liesel-Marie is going to deliver a coup d'grace, but I don't think that's the case since the troll is conscious. Assuming the CDG is not an option, here's the other choice, a standard attack.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 9 - 1 = 11 No power attack this round, wounded penalty
Damage: 1d12 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 plus 12 if the coup d'grace counts

Liesel-Marie
Frowning at the water beading on the troll's body and recognizing that setting her ablaze would likely not work as she'd hoped, Liesel-Marie knew she must press ahead.

She put a boot, still flaming against the troll's side, finding small satisfaction in the sizzling sound it made, but unsurprised when the flames were immediately doused by the rain.

She took a half-step back from the fallen giant-kin and swept the bearded axe up then down in a massive overhand chop, seeking to split the monster in twain.

I went over your calculations and noticed that you forgot the +1 bonus from Aodhán's theme song as it wasn't added to your attack roll (it lasts until the end of Liesel-Marie's turn). And that forgotten bonus enabled you to land the hit you were seeking.

Gharr was still conscious when the hit was landed, so this won't count as a coup de grace. But 17 points of damage is a significant chunk for the troll to take. In addition to still being in the Critical wound threshold, Gharr is both Disabled and Staggered and will have to make another Constitution check next round, provided nothing else happens to her before then.

Aodhán
The Chelish bouncer could hear the satisfaction in the grunt the Erutaki warrior made as she brought her weapon to bear on the fallen troll become one of frustration.

Aodhán half-turned to regard Liesel-Marie. Stand firm, warrior! He raised his voice louder, so that it could carry across the battlefield. Stand firm! The defenders of Trunau will never lay down to an army of monsters! They don't know how to fight! Stand firm!

Aodhán took a standard action to grant a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls to all allies (including himself) that can see or hear his voice and a +2 morale bonus on saves against charm and fear. As this ability of his is supernatural, it does not provoke an attack of opportunity from either orc that he's facing.

Battle Theme: Basil Poledouris - Anvil of Crom

Omast Frum
The warmth of Nogusta's healing touch, in addition to the soul-stirring words of Aodhán, caused some of the heaviness in the patrol sergeant's heart and the weariness of his limbs to melt away.

Aye! called out Frum. We give 'em what they came fer!

With renewed vigor, the defiant veteran demonstrated his intent with his greatsword, attacking one of the nearby shieldbreaker orcs that had come at him.

Omast Frum's greatsword attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25; -4 due to Power Attack and being in the Wounded threshold, +1 due to Aodhán's inspiring performance ability for a total of 22.
greatsword damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 2) + 9 = 16; +6 due to Power Attack, +1 due to Aodhán's inspiring performance ability for a total of 23 points of damage.

The patrol sergeant repeatedly brought his sword down on the orc before him with a frenzy of multiple strikes, each one more powerful than the last, until the shieldbreaker could no longer withstand the assault. Frum continued using his sword in this fashion until little more than an unmoving heap of lacerated flesh lay before him.

The savagery of the human's attack was emphasized by the guttural growl that issued from his mouth as he looked to remaining shieldbreakers, as if he dared them to come at him.

Rohan, you're up!

Rohan
The eyes of the tall human narrowed as he focused on the shieldbreaker approaching him and thought to himself, Oh, little one! You have made a grave mistake approaching me.

A fierce look crossed Rohan's face as he unleashed the fullness of his elemental fury upon his hapless foe.

Onslaught Blast: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 -1 due to Grazed wound threshold; +1 due to Aodhán's inspiring performance ability for a total of 15.
Onslaught Blast damage: 3d6 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 1) + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 17 +1 due to Aodhán's inspiring performance ability for a total of 18.

The ground seemed to react violently as tiny spheres of stone ripped themselves up and flew at the orc, who was seemingly rooted in place as they tore through its flesh in a display of viciousness that seemed uncharacteristic for the gentle man. As the invader's corpse fell to Rohan's onslaught, the act left little doubt that he was prepared to do what was necessary to defend the town he had come to call home and those that lived in it.

Twisted Heart Shieldbreakers
Worried that the newcomer could effectively rally the defenders, the two orcs tried to put the Chelish bouncer to the sword.

Shieldbreaker Orc 4 shotel attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13; -1 due to wound threshold
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Shieldbreaker Orc 5 shotel attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

But Aodhán proved to be a difficult target for the duo to land a hit on as he began to frustrate them with his ability to slip the swings of their shotels.

Not wanting to end up like the others that had faced the patrol sergeant before it, the shieldbreaker stepped to Frum in earnest.

Shieldbreaker Orc 6 shotel attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
shotel damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

The veteran used the length of his blade to his advantage, slapping aside any attack the orc started with contemptuous ease.

Kagak's Orc Squad-Mates
Not sure what had happened to their foe, the two survivors of Kagak's squad began to look around, hoping to catch some sign that either the half-drow had fled or that he remained with them on top of the tower.

The DC they have to beat is 36, as established by Nyym's earlier Stealth roll. However, that DC is lowered by 2 (making the new DC 34) due to the rain providing "favorable conditions" for this, despite the fact that the rolls will have a -4 penalty applied to them because of the precipitation.

Squad-Mate 1 Perception check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13; -4 due to the rain for a total of 9.
Squad-Mate 2 Perception check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4; -2 due to fear condition, -4 due to the rain for a total of 0 (can't go lower than 0).

Certain that their enemy had fled, the two squad-mates became at ease, their posture clearly indicating that, in their minds, the immediate battle was over.

Unless Nyym does something to convince them otherwise, the two orcs believe that the combat is over for them.

Beyond the gate, General Kelseph was marshaling the rest of the Twisted Heart alliance for the final push into the inner quarter now that the mysterious smoke that had been blocking the gate was gone.

And back at the southern barricade, Chief Defender Halgra, Patrol Leader Jagrin Grath, Sara Morninghawk (healed as best as circumstances would allow), Agrit Staginsdar, Vegazi, and Kurst Grath, along with the remainder of Trunau's militia force was moving with all due haste toward the site of Team Ruby's stand against the orcs.

This brings an end to Round 10. Round 11 starts now! While things are looking a bit better for Team Ruby, that could change at any given moment. The remaining forces of General Kelseph are just on the the other side of the portcullis, but those reinforcements are on the way. It's just a matter of who'll get there first. Nyym, you're up.

Nyym watched as the 2 orcs relaxed and drop their guard. In no shape to fight them, he desides to do something a bit different. He takes a slight move (5ft step) closer to Kagaks side and using his concealment to full advantage. Starts examining the corpes.

Nyym is looking for things of value to remove from the body. He wishes to take things from the body, but not break concealment.

Under different circumstances, I'd have you roll a Perception check to determine what you can see on Kagak's body. But given that you're acting under the cover of invisibility, I'll just go ahead and tell you what you can see.

Kagak's gear:

In addition to the chainmail, steel shield, battleaxe, 5 five throwing axes and war drums, Kagak has two vials, two scroll cases, and a wand. A scroll case, fyi, can hold up to four scrolls within them.

Since they are not currently aware of his presence, Nyym can attempt a Dexterity check (in place of Finesse) to pilfer an item from Kagak's corpse. The DC for this would normally be 20 (and therefore impossible for him to attempt due to not being trained, as the DC limit is 10), but because he is invisible, I'm lowering the DC to 10. The orcs get to make an opposed Perception check, with the DC established by the result of Nyym's Finesse check. If either orc succeeds on this check, it notices the attempt, regardless of whether Nyym got the item.

The good news is that Nyym succeeded at grabbing the vial without the two orcs noticing, though the scared orc came pretty close. Chalk that up to paranoia... Now to determine which vial Nyym actually managed to pilfer. I'll roll a 1d2 to determine which vial he grabbed. 1 is not a healing potion, 2 is.

Looks like Nyym succeeded in grabbing the healing potion, a potion of cure moderate wounds to be precise.

Twisted Heart Monitor Lizard
Not deterred in the slightest by its failure to scale the tower, the lizard prepared itself to enter through the front gate.

Heel!

Upon hearing the command, the reptile remained where it was.

An orc woman wearing armor made up of dozens of small, overlapping metal plates approached the lizard. And she wasn't alone, as the orc sat astride a powerful half-mechanical canine with piercing red eyes and sharp white teeth.

Upon reaching the reptile's side, the orc lowered the visor of her helmet and readied the longspear that she carried. A pennant hung from the shaft of weapon, bearing the crest of the alliance, a black heart wrapped in blood-soaked thorns.

Behind her, the orcs chanted aloud the name of Ogrash, the Steel Maiden as she was known by throughout the breadth of Belkzen. The eldest of General Kelseph's daughters, she had a reputation for savagery that made her perfect leading the vanguard of orcish raids.

Let the women lament as we drive forth and crush all that stand in our way!

And with those words, Ogrash the Steel Maiden charged through the portcullis, followed closely by the lizard and the rest of the Twisted Heart alliance.

Kyt
Having dealt with the threat to the patrol sergeant's rear, the elf turned her attention to one of the shiedlbreaker's attacking Aodhán.

Temple Sword flurry attack 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19; -2 due to Wounded threshold, +1 due to Aodhán's inspiring performance ability for a total of 18.

Kyt brought the sword up before her, wielding it with a flourish as the blade described an almost X-like pattern in the air that ended with it by her side pointing tip down.

The shieldbreaker scarcely had time to realize just how dead it was before falling to the ground in quartered pieces.

Mesa continued to play knowing she didn't have much longer to go before she was spent. Sure she had a way for some emergency magic, but that stuff tastes nasty, she let the spell fan out again to see if Nyym might take it up again, but that would be his choice.

Growling as the troll started to heal from the rain Mesa brought the flute dagger from her lips with a small curse, looking down at the dagger a wide grin crossed her features as her tails continued the chime the rhythm, the music mostly drum beats now.

The blade of the dagger was hollow with holes positioned in such a way that the blade itself or the mechanical pumps could be used to adjust the tone of the flute.

Of course this was no way to treat an expensive musical instrument, but trying times and all.

Mesa jabbed the dagger into the trolls chest in such a way to try an puncture a lung with it. She dug into her pouch for the second unmade minkai cocktail. If setting the troll on fire from the outside wouldn't work, a lung full of booze would make a nice corpse bomb.....

dunno what to roll for a prone target in this case

There are several things going on in this post that need to be called out and dealt with individually, so let's get started:

Mesa Silvertail wrote:

First, Mesa is taking that free action to maintain her performance. Noted. She currently has 7 rounds of performance left.

Mesa Silvertail wrote:

This sounds like a coup de grace attempt to me (a full-round action), so lets deal with that next. Normally there shouldn't be any attack roll for this, as it is technically an automatic hit and critical. However, Mesa normally doesn't get involved in messy matters such as this, and so, I want to emphasize that by having her make an attack roll. Gharr is prone, so she takes a -4 penalty to her Armor Class, on top of the -3 she receives for being at the Critical wound threshold and the -5 for having a 0 Dex (since she is back to being unconscious, Gharr is also helpless). So based on all of that, Mesa needs to hit an AC of 4 (meaning the player needs a 2 or higher on the attack roll). Should she succeed, Mesa gets to roll 1d6 and add +3 to the damage from the crit. Then I will need to make a Fortitude save for Gharr (DC 10 + damage dealt) or she "dies", though it will only be temporary as the troll's regeneration will still allow her to recover hit points.

Mesa Silvertail wrote:

Retrieving a stored item is a move action that can be done on her next turn. Applying the Minkai cocktail is a standard action that can also be done on her next turn. If she plans on using the spark cantrip to ignite the mixture, that will take another standard action that can be done on the round after the use of the Minkai cocktail (though I think LM may have an option that might be worth checking with her about to take advantage of what Mesa's attempting).

So there you go, Mesa. Based on your post, that is the breakdown of what she needs to do. And to paraphrase the immortal words of the late great Leslie Nielsen, I just want to tell you good luck, they're all counting on you. ;)

In response to the tall man's offer, Liesel-Marie shakes her head and points toward the gate. "Ready yourself. Give them something to think twice about!"

Liesel-Marie and I are not familiar with all of Rohan's options, but she's sure there's more coming. If the first rank got eviscerated by rocks exploding out of the soil, that would suit her just fine, thank you very much!

Is the illustrious (and luminous) Nogusta up next?

It's okay. As Liesel-Marie points out on a regular basis, real life comes first. I'm sorry to hear about your mom and I hope everything goes well for her.

I'm waiting on Mesa to make her roll. Once that occurs, I'll make a post and have the updated map ready for you all to see at that point.

Forgot to answer this question posed by Rohan's player:

Rohan Scythe wrote:

The aid another action (which is a standard action to use) can only be done while in melee. You essentially forgo your opportunity to make a melee attack by making an attack roll against an AC of 10 to give an ally a +2 bonus either to their attack roll or Armor Class against an opponent.

if I’m reading it right, if Nogusta moves a couple squares to the right and up he can actually heal the entire group and use selective channel to ignore the baddies.

The map has been updated to take into account what has transpired before Nogusta's post. Once the Erutaki Warrior Princess (tm) has taken her actions, I'll update it once again to account for what happens in this post as well as hers.

Glad to hear that everything went well with your mom, Rohan. And as far as your question goes, I'll have to take a look and see about that... I should have an answer for you just before you post again.

And with that out of the way, on with the round:

Mesa
Of course it would rain when I'm trying to start a fire that's just how it works isn't it?It's like when you wash your wagon....

Mesa continued to play, knowing she didn't have much longer to go before she was spent. Sure, she had a way for some emergency magic, but that stuff tasted nasty. The Minkai woman let the performance fan out, to see if Nyym might take it up again, but that would be his choice.

Growling as the troll started to heal from the rain, Mesa brought the flute dagger from her lips with a small curse. Looking down at it, a wide grin crossed her features as her tails continued to chime the rhythm, the music mostly drum beats now.

The blade of the dagger was hollow with holes positioned in such a way that the blade itself or the mechanical pumps could be used to adjust the tone of the flute.

Of course, this was no way to treat an expensive musical instrument, but trying times and all.

Mesa jabbed the dagger into the troll's chest in such a way as to try and puncture a lung with it.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Mesa hits with that roll and does 9 points with the flute-dagger, making the total amount of damage that Gharr has taken thus far 29. That DC for her Constitution check just got harder to make.

Okay Liesel-Marie, I need you to make sure this troll doesn't get back up while I pour in the hooch. Then we light that on fire and fwoosh, no more troll.

Nogusta
Nogusta hears the shouting outside of the gate and knows that the another wave of orcs is on the way. He shook the rain off of his clean-shaven head and flexed his wings to throw off the droplets...

my WHAT? Wings?

The Mwangi looked up at the sky and whispered a prayer of wondering bewilderment for the strange blessings of the Dawnflower and flapped the wings hard, leaping back a few feet and landing just a few feet behind the largest cluster of defenders. He thrust his shield forward, and the emblazoned angelic ankh erupted in a golden yellow light that pulsed outwards around him.

All injured allies within a 30-foot radius of Nogusta receive 7 points of healing. Factoring in the 3rd dimensional aspect, this should include Nyym as well.

Gharr
Just before Mesa could take her tiny hands from around the handle of her weapon she had implanted in the troll's chest, the bard could feel the creature's flesh pushing back. Almost as if it were trying to force the flute-dagger out from its body.

The flood troll's regeneration has kicked in, mending some of the damage that has been inflicted upon her. This will lower the DC needed somewhat, but will it be enough to make a difference?

Gharr's Constitution check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9; -3 due to being at the Critical wound threshold. Bottom line, the troll needs a natural 20 on the die to meet the DC of 10 required to pass...
...which she did not get. Gharr is still unconscious and both in the Critical threshold as well as Disabled.

Liesel-Marie, you're up!

And I just realized that the one thing I needed to adjudicate, the coup de grace, got overlooked. So, lets do a rewind back to this moment:

Mesa
Mesa jabbed the dagger into the troll's chest in such a way as to try and puncture a lung with it.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

At this point, I should have had Gharr make a DC 27 Fortitude save to see if she "dies". So lets remedy that real quick.

Gharr's Fortitude save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9; -3 due to being at the Critical wound threshold. Thanks to the DC set by Mesa, the troll needs a natural 20 on the die to pass.

And she didn't.

Now, if this were any other creature, Gharr's role in this combat would be over. But, because Gharr has that rain regeneration racial ability, the flood troll cannot die as long as her regeneration is still functioning (although she can still fall unconscious when her hit points are below 0). As has been demonstrated, fire can cause Gharr's rain regeneration to stop functioning for 1 round following the attack. During this round, the flood troll does not heal any damage and can die normally.

So basically, you need to take advantage of the one round where the flood troll's rain regeneration is shut down from taking fire damage to inflict a coup de grace to permanently end Gharr.

Otherwise, things like this will continue to happen:

Gharr
Just before Mesa could take her tiny hands from around the handle of her weapon she had implanted in the troll's chest, the bard could feel the creature's flesh pushing back. Almost as if it were trying to force the flute-dagger out from its body.

The DM will now fast forward back to just before the turn of the Erutaki Warrior Princess. Hopefully that helps both Mesa and Liesel-Marie figure out how the two of them can put down the flood troll.

My axe does so much more damage, but the fire dagger... the fire dagger is what killed her brother once and for all.

With that thought, the Erutaki unleashes a battle cry that echoes from the walls as she drops to one knee beside the prone troll. As her weight comes down, a dagger of pure flame appears in her hand and she slams it into the face of the unconscious monster, trying to end her.

Coup d'grace with kinetic blade (flame): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Fire damage: 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (5) = 8 Unsure if it should be doubled or not, but I believe that will stop the regeneration for the moment.
