The bull shook its head as the hail of arrows and javelins pinged off its armored back and decimated the underbrush to either side. It snorted a puff of green vapor into the air as the gladiator moved back into its pat, but otherwise seemed to ignore the figment. It pawed the ground as if to charge once more, but instead moved forward at a deliberate pace and snorted. The snort filled the road and underbrush before it with the same green vapors that it had been exhaling in small puffs. The vapors washed over Lefrik, Kelendra, and Anklebiter making each of them cough at the foul gas.

Up in the canopy, the air swirls and darkens -- then abruptly brightens. A single, golden-furred spider appears, liquid eyes sighting on the Gorgon. The spider spits a stream of webbing at the gorgon, attempting to snare it.

Kelendra and her horse stiffen and turn a mottled shade of gray, while Kelendra's clothing and gear maintain their normal appearance. Apparently only living flesh can be turned by the monster's foul breath. Anklebiter was about to lead his own horse away when he felt it unmoving against the reins. Looking over, he saw that his horse as well had been petrified. He sent a spell at the bull and then scampered away to get out of the thing's range.
Bruendor and Calla lined up their shots, and while Bruendor's crossbow bolt went just wide, both of Calla's shafts sunk deeply into the bull's chest.
Lefrik roared and left his horse behind, charging the bull. His axe cracked off one of the thing's horns before the other swept in and gored him. The entangling webs seemed not to affect the massive bull at all, and the strength behind the horn ripped Lefrik from crotch to sternum.

Bruendor closed on the bull, keeping it between himself and Lefrik, as the barbarian smashed his axe down on the creature in a furious rage. One of its horns broke off and the bull reeled in pain. The move gave Bruendor the opening he needed, and his rapier found a vital spot in the thing's belly. Another arrow sprouted from the beast's chest as Calla contributed her attacks.
A pool of slick material magically appeared under the armored bull as Anklebiter smiled in satisfaction. That smile turned to a gasp of disbelief when the bull not only kept its feet, but managed to strike Lefrik twice on the head with its dinner plate sized hooves. The raging barbarian reeled at the strikes, but the now one-horned bull was bleeding and breathing heavily. It wasn't long for this world.

Is it actually known what kind of marital arrangements gorgons have? Because a herd of those suckers could probably decimate a mid-sized kingdom...
| DM Bigrin |
Looking up gorgon's now...oh hey, you CAN get spell components from them. And yes, they can and do form small herds.
Upon further reflection, Anklebiter is certain that he has heard of wizards using gorgon horn for certain strength-enhancing solutions, as well as spells relating to stone. It took a little coaxing, but he managed to convince Lefrik to hack the horns off for later use.
Looking around, Calla spotted the remnants of more statues, some of which were badly deteriorated, while others looked brand new. Some of the newer ones still had their effects about them - clothing, pouches, and belt daggers. Between them, she found a decent amount of coins and a small handful of gems. Given the clothing, she was sure that the gems came from either a minor noble or a gem merchant.

You had only been on the road for an hour or so, when a movement off to the east had Calla peering into the woods. She was about to say something when a black-fletched arrow slammed into Lefrik's shoulder. The force of the blow nearly sent the barbarian reeling out of his saddle.
The first arrow must have been a signal of some kind, because more arrows rained down on you from both sides of the path. A second struck Lefrik, this time in the leg, pinning him to his horse, which reared in sudden pain.
