lightly more than a century ago, the Lung Wa Dynasty collapsed, plunging much of Tian Xia into chaos. During this time, a once-powerful military and trade organization known as the Way of the Kirin also rumbled and disappeared from the public eye. At the height of its power the Way of the Kirin held great wealth and had small private armies defending its interests.
The Way of the Kirin has long fascinated Venture-Captain Amara Li, and as she has gained power in the Pathfinder Society, this interest has only grown. Amara Li sees the Way of the Kirin as an ideal complement to the Pathfinder Society in Tian Xia, and in truth, a great deal of her involvement with the Inner Sea's organization has been in hopes of discovering the secrets of the mysterious Way of the Kirin.
But before that issue of the Pathfinder Chronicles was published for the masses, there was a motley group of historians, explorers, murderhobos, and mercenaries that where instrumental in discovering the truth. And there where things that where never put into the Pathfinder Chronicle. . .
Awoken in your beds, or as the case may be for some of you, dragged from the local tavern just when things where beginning to get good, you are requested by name to meet at The Tapestry in one hour.
As you enter the basement room, you see that it is uncharacteristically empty. A tall dwarf greets you, confirming you by name before shrugging in response to why you are here. Once a few others join you, Ambrus Valsin walks in, and confirms that everyone on the list has arrived, then turns to you.
"Why me? I'm certain this could have waited until morning before I had to gather you lot for this. But, I'm up now, so might as well get to it. I assume you are familiar with how this priceless artifact works. We are sending you to Dtang Ma in the southeastern side of fabled Tian Xia. A place called Ramparassad specifically."
In his typical jerkishness, he says "Well, lets get moving. You will receive further instructions there."
Utilizing one of the newly reawakened magics of the Hao Jin Tapestry to travel the roads of magic to different points on Golarion, rather than to the lands locked away within it, you arrive in a small room.
It is dark save for a few candles, revealing walls made of bamboo wood and paper. Foreign symbols on thick black ink hang on sheets of long paper like banners upon the wall, and odd exotic weapons and armor sit on display throughout. A strong stone desk sits on one side, with extremely organized papers and scrolls open it.
To your side, is a small tray with sweet smelling hot tea, and enough small cups for each of you. A single note rests on it as well, saying in the common (Taldan) tongue "Please help yourselves, honored guests".
Beside it is a small platter with a small assortment of strange foods, (you think it is food), and a great deal of rice, as well as a set of wooden spoons and a pair of strange sticks with which you can eat.
This isn't yet art of the scenario, but I wanted to offer the chance for those that have finished to introduce their characters and RP a bit while we wait. :)
Rravn |
Rravn is a strange fellow; deranged even, some might say. The tengu has cream white feathers, but the most striking features are his eyes. His both eyes are pupilless, and his left eye's iris is orange, the other blue. He wears an eastern tatami-do armor and wields a taldan falcata sword. "We Rravn. Prophet," he introduces himself when asked, not really giving any other information about himself in addition to that.
All the while he has been twitching slightly, suddenly turning to look to the side as if he had seen something move. He does acknowledge the presence of other agents, so he's not completely delusional.
He follows the instructions and doesn't create a scene when entering the Hao Jin tapestry, even though he has never before even seen the item. When arriving to the room with tea, rice, and everything nice, he eyes the foods and drinks suspiciously. "Suspicion. Night. Poison? Irrelevant," the tengu mutters and walks over to the desk, starting to glance at the papers and scrolls without touching any of them.
"Odd language. Odd building. Odd food. Waiting. Trap? Unbeknownst."
Ramesses |
Ramesses is a young Half-Elf, built more like his human side than the elves. He relies on his wits, and his Deity to guide his blade in battle. He enjoys fighting, been close to death several times, which is apparent when you look at his breastplate. He follows a strict code and will never flee from a battle. He stares at the Large bird and suddenly memories of a previous journey spring to mind, involving the same species, "Tengu isn't it?..."he pauses for a moment as another wave of memories come through"I've seen first hand what your kind can do, saved my arse one time. Glad to have you." he grabs some of the tea raises it and nods towards the Tengu.
Rravn |
Rravn looks up at Ramesses, and takes a good long look with his blank stare. "Competent. Strong," he comments shortly and gets back to inspecting the desk's contents.
Todric Callaster |
Another warrior is among the party. Todric is a tall, trim human in his early thirties. He wears his short brown hair slicked back and is dressed almost entirely in black. The glint of mithral shows at the collar of his stylish doublet.
He carries an expertly crafted rapier on his hip, and an equally fine bow on his back.
He fills a bowl with some rice as he greet his companions:
"Well met, friends. Todric's the name, but please call me Tod. This sounds like quite the assignment, eh? Anyway, I'm one of those chaps who actually stayed awake in fighter college. I don't know as much as most wizards, but then I'll fancy I can outduel most of them with my blade. I just served a mission out on this side of the world a few months back. Nice place, really. Plus, it helps take my mind off her..."

Entering the room and standing in the corner is a tall broad muscular man dressed in a little hide. On his back are a few spears and on his side is a club. He is a quiet person and speaks little unless he sees the need. The thing that lets you know hes not human is the deep grean eyes that match is metallicy green hair. Wrapped around his neck is a weasle and by his side, laying down by his feet, is a velociraptor. He greats anyone who says hello but does not go out of his way to meet you

As you begin to talk and treat yourself to the amenities left for you, suddenly a woman slides open the door, almost in a ritualistic fashion, steps within, and once again, calmly closes the door. She then bows, and introduces herself to those who have not met her. She speaks in a heavily accented, but still understandable Taldan (Common).
"I am Venture-Captain Amara-Li, and I am most please that you have made the journey to our humble lodge. I understand that thing here are,. . . somewhat different that you are accustom to. Please, my honored guests, I assure you that the food, and this tea, tastes far better than you might think. Please partake, and I will make an effort to explain why I have called you all here."
She bows once more, before taking her place behind the desk, each step reminds you of a perfected dance step, and her baring is that of a noblewoman. "“When first I arrived in Absalom two years ago, I had a simple but nuanced mission: to increase communication and sharing of resources between the Pathfinder Society and its counterpart in Tian Xia by establishing the Lantern Lodge’s position on the other side of the world.” She pauses briefly to sip her tea, before adding, “More than a year ago we successfully purchased and restored the house known as Hinojai*, which was once a base for the Way of the Kirin. When we acquired Hinojai, it was as much a gambit to attract the attention of the remaining agents of the Way of the Kirin as it was an opportune acquisition of real estate. And indeed, a man claiming to be an agent of the Way recently contacted me by leaving me a message here.”
“Although the Way of the Kirin fell into ruin with the fall of Lung Wa a century ago, its far-reaching resources remain valuable, and it still commands great respect. If the Pathfinder Society could ally itself with the Way, the relationship would be of immense benefit to both organizations.
Amara’s voice reveals her satisfaction as she says, “Pathfinders, we are on the cusp of just such an alliance. In a day’s time, we shall meet with this representative from the Way of the Kirin, and you are to act as security for me and ensure that the meeting is a success. I do not expect any trouble from the Way, but after all of the betrayals and double-crosses that the Society has experienced over the past few years, I worry that this is an elaborate setup by the Aspis Consortium. I have arranged for us all to be transported to the site early tomorrow morning, so take care of any errands you have in Ramparassad this afternoon. There are no settlements near our destination, and we will be spending the night there. I expect you understand the need to be fully prepared.”
Amara Li stares into the dregs of her tea as though she were attempting to discern some lost thoughts in the green leaves floating at the cups bottom, then looks up. “Ah yes, before the negotiations begin in earnest, I will host a formal tea ceremony to set the tone. I encourage you to participate, though doing so is not required. I would, however, expect you to dress appropriately for the event.” With that she stands and waits to accept any questions.
* In the Haunting of Hinojai.
I also really need Falom (?) and "Chris" to show face here.
Rravn |
Rravn stares the venture-captain with a long, blank stare. "Yes," the tengu replies, and promptly turns to walk out of the room without another say.
He's just very weird, so unless someone addresses him, he'll go wander the shops and buy stuff. I'll have the equipment list updated by Monday (8am UTC+2) earliest.

Jorah |
A handsome man enters, barely making a sound as he walks, his step is so light. He appears to almost float across the floor. He is of average height and has a slim build to him, yet is perfectly proportioned and in excellent physical shape. It's hard to judge his age as he appears much younger then he seems. His hair is a light blonde, almost platinum and with a particular sheen to it. Bright blue eyes that almost seem to sparkle like stars in the night sky look over the group gathered. His clothing is modest, similar to a clerics vestments, and impeccably clean. A gleaming morningstar hangs to one side of his belt and a dark wooden shield is strapped to his back, emblazoned with a blue and silver butterfly, the mark of Desna.
"My apologies for being tardy. I got caught up tending to some other business. My name is Jorah and I will be happy to join your party." His speech is quiet yet smooth, almost as if he is talking in a whisper. While Jorah glides over and pours a cup of tea, it almost sounds like he mumbles something in Celestial.

"I might just take you up on that offer. Something to keep in mind, for certain. But, if there are no questions", she says with a sigh, "I shall release you to explore while I make some of the final preparations for tomorrow. We will set out in the morning. I imagine that the same sense of wanderlust and exploration that drew you to join the Society will lead you to seek your fill in these, to you foreign and unknown lands. But, please remember, at all times, you are my honored guests, and as such, you do represent me, as well as the Society of Pathfinders. It would not serve any of us if you where to find yourself offending the peoples here, or getting yourselves into trouble."
"Both lodgings and food has been made for your use, and while much more humble that those you may be more accustom to, we so have a library you may use, though, most of the writings will be in the various dialects more common to these parts."
And with that, she bows, allowing you to spend the rest of the day and night as you may wish. <feel free to make any purchases you may see fit, swap out spells, etc. . .
The next morning, after a modest breakfast and about an hour to make any final preparations you might have. . .
VC Amara, a pair of servants, and yourselves are teleported to the island where the meeting will occur, and she reveals that they are now on a small volcanic island at the northern end of the Minatan Archipelago.
A black stone pier juts out from the beach, though years of pounding surf and use make it impossible to discern whether it was magic or skilled hands that constructed the pier. Igneous black sand peppered with chunks of dark gray rock makes up the beach. Further up the hill, the landscape is filled with strange shapes eroded from the charcoal-colored stone. Wild basalt beasts, bizarre pumice chimneys, igneous archways, and twisted stone snakes line the winding mile long path that crawls up the steep hillside. The black tiles of the lighthouse’s rooftop is just barely visible between two of the more serpentine stone menhirs. A light mist dampens the docks and darkens the stone to a glossy black.
Looking about, it seems vacant, but with the light rain and mist, it's difficult to tell. Proceeding towards the house, you reach your destination uneventfully.
A lighthouse towers above a two-story house. Both structures are made primarily of the local soot-colored basalt. The lighthouse appears to be intact, but the manor has fared less well—its windows lack screens and its roof sags, suggest it has suffered badly from decades of neglect. These structures perch at the edge of a cliff, with the north-facing side of the house supported by tall stilts anchored deep into the cliff.
Before entering, Amara-Li notes something that you yourselves have likewise noted. That while the island is small, and so far does not seem to be inhabited by anyone else besides those within this house, it also seems to be rather unprepared for any sorts of defense, should an attack come. She bids you to have a look around, perhaps even scouting out the island, while she remains here with her servants to wait.
The island is somewhat shaped like a crescent moon, and from one end to the other, long-ways, is only perhaps 13,000 feet. To keep things simple, the light house is at the northern most tip of the crescent moon (with the two points to the right), with the pier near the middle left. Unfortunately, if anyone would have asked questions, it would have given other information, and then you could have asked around, but now you are basically operating blind, which may cause some things to seem to come out of nowhere. :(

Keep in mind the entre island is only about 2 miles long, and fairly consistently about 1/3 of a mile across, (or just short of 4 Kilometers long and a bit under 1 Kilometer wide). If you and pet split up, and another person helped scout, it could be almost entirely covered and all be back in a hour or two.

Savage and others?:
You spend a good hour looking around the island, noting a distinct lack of, well, much of anything, and getting the distinct impression that whoever sold this small coastal island to the Way of the Kirin certainly got the better end of the deal.
It's not until you reach the southern end of the island that you first spot something. Another ship, coming your way. Quickly running to find a place to hide, you watch it get closer and closer, sailing fast. When it gets close enough that you can begin to make out details, you see it isn't just one ship, but four, all in a line, and filled with warriors, their army heavy and in the style of the natives. You count the best you can, something like 60, before you spot, something else. . . Something even from here you know to be vile and unnatural, (even if not exactly what these unclean things are). At first you thought it was simply masked warriors grouped together, but mixed in with the other sixty or so soldier, are small floating Tien masks. They are quite a live, and even from this distance, you sense the sheer evil that they are composed of.
Knowing this is a sign of great danger, you quickly begin to make your way back to the lighthouse to warn the others, feeing just as the ships anchor just off the shore and the troops beginning to get out.

Back in the city Rravn went from shop to shop to make his purchases, having trouble understand the vendors and vice versa. Eventually he gets what he wants and gets back to the lodge to meditate.
The tengu had chosen to stay with Amara-Li at the manor, and began intently inspecting the manor for traps, secret doors, and other peculiarities.
Rravn has been a little more peculiar than he is ordinarily, mainly been silent and staring into nothingness. Once the oni have been brought up, his eyes turn red, and he grips his falcata. With an unearthly deep voice, he whispers very loudly:
"Oh let those come! 60, pthyi, when composed of inferior warriors unable to hold their spears point up, I'll slice and dice the sorry folk back to the oblivion they came from!"
After his brief visage of violence and murder, his eyes turn back to the regular blue and orange, and his stance goes back to a more nebulous one. "Captain. Kirin. What happened? Infiltration? Domination? Threat abound. Or not? Captain. When meet? What appearances?"
"Todric. Furniture inside. Blockade construction. Basement hiding. Safe there."

As all of the Pathfinders return to the Lighthouse with warnings if what seems to be a possible invasion, Amara-Li suggests you retreat into the house, both to prepare to meet your contact to the Way of the Kirin and prepare for her tea ceremony, but also so any spies may not know just how many agents the Pathfinder Society has sent. Not yet.
The misty rain blocks direct view of the sunset. Slowly, the sky darkens with the coming night, only to start lightening again, perhaps a sign that the clouds are breaking to the south.
A warm, reddish-orange glow brightens the horizon. But instead of fading like a normal sunset, it glows brighter and brighter. The glow isn’t the sunset, . . . it’s coming from the pier.

The front door is unlocked, but made of solid reinforced wood, and opens to a mail hall/meeting room, where two massive bay windows with window seats topped with ruined silk cushions face north and offer a spectacular view of the ocean and a cluster of smaller islands.
With a quick inspection, you see the house is empty, meaning you contact with the Way of the Kirin has not yet arrived. Amara-Li informs you, "We where to meet at noon today, I simply wanted to come early and make a good impression. I still intend to honor the custom of the tea ceremony, and I believe that the great hall would be the most ideal place. Look around while I begin to prepare for the ceremony."
A staircase in the northeaster side lease up to the second story, and there are a pair of doors leading to other rooms. One to a Kitchen (left) and the other a formal dining room (right).
Both appear clean, but unused for some while. The kitchen has several large, empty chests that once served as pantry space, an oven with openings in the top for pots of various sizes, a sink, and a single wooden stool, while the dining room houses a large round table, and plenty of chairs, all covered to be protected from dust.
Upstairs, leads to a master bedroom as well as a spare guest room. The spare room is located directly above the main entrance to the house. Another door leads to the east, where there is a small bride from the second story over to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse rises 30 feet and is built of the same dark basalt as the nearby house. A slightly arched covered bridge connects the second floors of the two structures. Inside, the lighthouse contains only a small storage area and a wooden spiral staircase that winds its way up to the tower’s top. A trapdoor at the top of the stairs exits to a narrow walkway with a railing that encircles the middle of the small room that houses the lantern. The lighthouse’s lantern is still functional, but the lens and half of the glass panes that would have once protected and focused the flame are now broken from years of bad weather and lack of maintenance.
Just as you are looking around, suddenly the front door swings open, and an elderly man enters, bowing to each of you. He wears ancient but very well kept armor, that of a samurai lord of some station. In struggling Common, he speaks gently, but with a hidden power to his voice and posture, "I am Iko Tsuneo." Just then, Amara-Li enters, having just changed to ceremonial robes, and bows to the samurai warrior. "I am Amara-Li of the Lantern Lodge, and I am honored that you have agreed to meet with us. I hope that your journey was pleasant and without trouble, and I sincerely hope that your order and mine can come to a mutually beneficial agreement. We also thank you for your generosity for inviting us to meet at your home, but my agents inform me that it may not be as safe here as we had hoped."
Iko nods his head, not agreeing as much as considering, and asks you all to sit, "Please, before we get into that, I would know of your organization more. These are agents of the Pathfinder Society I presume." To which Amara-Li nods yes, but before she can say more, Iko raises a hand, "Ah, very good. Than with respect, Captain Amara, I would like to hear from these agents. Please, Tell me of the intentions and dealing of the Pathfinder Society. I'm most interested in hearing of your personal observations and experience, your exploits under it's banner, and not, how you might say, "just what you think I might want to hear". "It is a pleasure to meet you Mr Tsuneo, I am called Jorah." he says in a smooth, loud whisper. "I joined the Pathfinders after leaving my temple I trained in. My goal was to find a means to spread the word of Desna and be a vessel for her good. I am a member of the Silver Crusade faction of Pathfinders, and we strive to help the weak and weed evil wherever it may hide. The Pathfinder society allows us the opportunity and resources to do so. I could tell of my travels, but I fear we have more pressing issues. We have seen an evil coming. I can read in the stars that we have a struggle coming, one we can yet truly understand."
The old samurai seems to stand even taller, if possible, when he hears the name Desna, but listens patiently as you tell your tail. "So, does the Society of Pathfinders advocate those of a religious path? And this silver crusade, I am unfamiliar with it, though I feel a certain kinship from what little you have said. How many, what you say, factions, are there?"
"This appears to be a family crest of some sorts, but I do not recognize it myself. Are any of you able to identify this?
"Such attention to true importance is impressive in one so young. Indeed, this simple house is more than it appears. I am not certain just how much your master has told you," as he meets Amara-Li's eyes for a moment, "but if you would allow an old man to relive a bit of the past. . . Before even I was born, the Lung Wa Dynasty collapsed, which through these lands into chaos and war. Warlords for all over rose, many lacked any honor and used banditry to rise to power. The Way of the Kirin, a once powerful order was devastated, and nearly destroyed. But some few endured the hard times, kept our ways so that they might be passes on, like a candle that lights another candle. One day, when heaven has ordained, a candle would light a torch, and then a torch would light a campfire, and the light would spread, further and further."
"This was my childhood home. I grew up here, and it was here that I learned that not only had I inherited wealth, but also the last torch. The secrets of the Way of the Kirin, whom my ancestors had been blessed to have been a part of. So, you see, this house, this simple home was more than just a child's summer home. For many generations, it has been the training facility for the last of the Way of the Kirin, what few of us remain."
"I first learned of Captain Amara's, . . . fascination with our order when her allies first cleansed and then purchased Hinojai manor, another important sight to our order, and I have been considering extending a hand since then. It seemed somehow appropriate, if not preordained, that it would happen here."
"Please excuse my intrusion, Todric my lord, I believe the tea is ready can you come to the kitchen and make sure it's to your liking?"
"Tea can wait. I would most like to hear of your glory, and those of this Society you serve."
When prompted to tell about the Pathfinder Society and their own personal adventures, Rravn's eyes again shift, this time to a light green hue. He starts a song in soft singing voice; voice that sounds like nothing Rravn has been speaking before this.
"Time holds mysteries, time keeps secrets / Our quest to uncover, to learn what's hidden / In books and tomes, arms and crests / Unspeakables, many find forbidden."
"From far south, to far north / Meeting friends, confronting foes / Some of us fall, others go forth / For the mission, it must come to a close."
Rravn's eyes then turn back to blue and orange.
"Explore. Report. Cooperate."
"Hum, . . . I see."
Falom looks around the room.
The old man politely awaits the young woman to gather her thoughts.
Ramesses |
"Oh master todric is amazing to see on the battlefield he's graceful yet deadly. He taught me a few things just so I can defend myself from petty thieves when I run my errands." he pauses for a moment...then looks towards Todric. "Forgive me if I've said too much, I must get back to my duties." he bows at the group. "I am afraid to disappoint you Mr Tsueno, but I am not nearly as young as I appear. I will be 74 before the next moon turns. I owe my youthful appearence and other abilities to being blessed with the blood of the heavens, which is why I devote myself to Desna." His eyes almost twinkle like stars and he gazes out the window at the night sky as he mutters something in the celestial tongue before continuing, "The Pathfinder Society let's it's members choose their own path and some members are more religious then others. Its a very diverse group, and there are a handful of factions within the Society, although they do change from time to time."

Todric Callaster |
Tod looks a bit embarrassed by the flattery, but goes along as best he can.
"No, worry not my faithful servant. I only hope my skill proves a match for your praise if we must clash at arms with some enemy. But you may attend to your other duties."
He examines the crest for a moment.

Answering their host:
"A Rift to the Abyss stands open in northern Avistan. The whole blighted area was hemmed in by a series of protective stones. The stones have failed, and turning back the demonic horde is of utmost importance."

Rravn |
Rravn doesn't react to Iko Tsuneo's words at all, staring far into nothingness. All of a sudden, he begins to talk. He makes delicate gestures while talking, pantomiming each word.
"Jormurdun. Sky citadel. Grand exploration. Demons, duergar. Sky key. We retrieve."
After that he looks at Todric and Ramesses, bemused by their peculiar deception. He squints his eyes, as if to focus his gaze.
"Very weird."
